Chapter 2:
Edward
I heard the truck long before I saw it pull up on the nearly abandoned dirt road. It had been years since anyone had been out this way, but in the last few weeks, several trucks and service vans had been coming and going.
Through their minds, I could see an image of a teenage girl with long, whiskey brown hair. Her eyes were dark and full of sadness. A timid mouse of a girl. The chief of police's daughter and she was coming home.
The worker's thoughts varied. The prospect of an addition to the dating pool excited some. Others wondered what was actually bringing her back after being gone so long. A jealous few wondered what about her was special enough to have her staying in a house this size with renovation material being dropped off daily. Human thoughts were so vapid.
But seeing her through other's thoughts did nothing to prepare me for the creature who stepped out from the beat up, old, pickup truck.
A cool breeze twirled through her hair, making her nipples bead up beneath her baby blue shirt and unzipped jacket. The sudden urge to race out from the tree line and zip it for her was overwhelming.
An unintended growl rumbles through my chest as her scent glided across the rustling leaves. Fuck. It almost causes my knees to buckle. Images of holding her fragile, pale neck in my hands as I coat my face in her warm, sweet blood grab hold of every rational thought I have.
Edward. Get ahold of yourself.
Human blood hadn't tempted me in a century, but my freewill was dissipating by the second. Her scent. It had every muscle in my throat tensed like I had never taken a drink in my life. An enrapturing mix of freesia and lavender, with a hint of strawberry. The combination had me wanting to wrap myself up in her and let myself drown in her blood.
I pulled the hood of my black sweatshirt forward like it could do anything to mask the scent from assaulting my senses. A feral version of myself was threatening to take hold of my mind with each passing second. A predator starving for this little mouse.
The few seconds her scent completely enveloped me felt like hours. But the scent of something horrid broke the spell. Like a wet dog that had been doused with cologne.
