So I was at Comic-Con this weekend and I saw The Killing Joke...I disagree with the criticism. I think Barbara wasn't being needy, just human. Her character is kind and loving, Batman is cold and distant. Anyone looks needy compared to him. Oh, and I am a woman just in case if anyone hasn't guessed that.
I was able to fix my make up and put some Visine in my eyes before I decided I'd been gone too long. I quickly ran down the stairs to the dining room where the meeting was taking place. Before I opened the doors, I took in a deep breath and exhaled. As I entered everyone looked at me, probably wondering what took me so long.
"Sorry for the hold-up," I said, "Alfred had trouble locating me and my phone was on silent."
"No worries Barbara. Please sit," Clark gestured towards an empty chair between him and Diana. Sitting between a goddess and a superbeing that might as well be a god. Not nerve wracking at all. Still better than sitting next to Bruce at the moment. I couldn't help but look at Bruce as I sat down. His face was expressionless, but he still probably could tell I had been crying. Or maybe I'm just paranoid.
"Everyone, this is Barbara Gordon. Most of you have met her I believe. She is Batgirl and a brilliant information broker. She's helped me a few times on digging up information that I needed." I blushed a bit.
"Nice to met you-" John Stewart was cut off by a red blur and gust of wind. Flash was beside me, sticking his hand out.
"I'm Wally, nice to see another redhead around," he said trying to be smooth.
I shook his hand and smiled a bit. "Nice to meet you, Wally," another moment went by and he was still holding my hand, "you can let go now."
"Oh, of course. Sorry," Flash sheepishly retracted his hand.
"You probably want to know why we've called you here," said Superman.
"We wanted to propose a job to you. Don't feel like you have to take it because it is a massive undertaking, but if you are up to the task it would be a great help to us," Superman said looking at me and then to everyone else.
J'onn was sitting across from me and continued to elaborate,"We want you to help us recruit and be an information broker on possible candidates. You would also do some preliminary vetting."
I thought for a moment. This could be perfect for me right now.
"What do you think," Wonder Woman asked.
I glanced around the room and looked at Bruce. "For this to work, I'm going to need at least one of you working with me, and I'd like it to be J'onn. One of the founding members needs to be very hands on with this. J'onn brought all of you together, who better to help me. If you would like to that is J'onn?"
J'onn looked interested. "It would be my pleasure. Since the unfortunate demise of the Watchtower, I currently do not have a place to live. I would like to see what life is like here in Gotham."
And this is where I'm going to drop a bomb.
"What about in Metropolis," I asked. The Martian seemed a bit confused as did everyone else at the table.
"If we are going to be working together shouldn't we live in the same city," asked J'onn.
"Of course," I replied. I then looked at Bruce, "That's why I'm moving to Metropolis. Since we are planning for tomorrow, shouldn't we be planning in the City of Tomorrow?"
Bruce didn't let on that he was feeling any emotion to what I just said.
"You're right," Bruce spoke up. "Wayne Enterprises will set you up. All expenses paid."
I glanced at Clark to see his reaction. He was the only one who knew the personal history between Bruce and I and he was speechless as to what was going on.
"Anything else you need," Bruce asked. He was still cold and calm.
"Well since I'm not a billionaire, and I can't fly or run fast, I would need a car. Nothing fancy. Right now my Crown Vic won't make it to Metropolis, let alone the out of the driveway right now," I replied.
"Of course," Bruce replied. 'Of course.' Come on Bruce you have to be panicking on the inside right now.
"Can I get a car?" Wally asked. The tension in the air was cut with that. Everyone look at Wally annoyed.
"What do YOU need a car for," John asked as if he were about to climb over the table and smack Wally upside the head.
"For the ladies. Oh and I do NOT want a sensible one. Preferably something Italian."
After disscussing more details, I left the room a bit pleased with the outcome. I'm going to Metropolis.
"You're leaving?" A voice of a teenage boy asked. Of course, he had to have set some sort of listening device in the room. I shouldn't be surprised.
"Tim I-" I began to say.
He just looked at me and went upstairs.
"Tim," I called after him and heard a door slam shut.
I pushed my hair back in frustration and looked towards Alfred.
"I took the liberty to selecting the Mercedes for you. It's in the driveway with the keys on the dash."
"Thanks Alfred," I replied with a sad smile. I wanted to run after Tim, but I knew from being a teenager myself that what he wanted at this moment was space.
The next day I decided I needed to tell my father that I was leaving Gotham and I was going to be giving the station my two weeks notice. I knocked on his door and he answered right away.
"Barbara, I didn't know you were coming. I was going to call you and ask for you to come over," he said giving me a hug. Things had been awkward between us since I found out about his relationship with Essen. I've been a bit cold I guess. I hadn't even been back to his apartment since. I of course still saw him at the station all the time. Sarah seemed to keep the hell out of dodge though. I did call him to make sure he was ok during and after the invasion.
"I needed to talk to you about something," I said getting to the point.
"I want to tell you something first," he said closing the door behind me and leading me to the couch, "unless you feel you need to go first."
"Age before beauty," I said uneasily. He gave me a slight smirk.
He sat down next to me and grabbed my hand, "I don't want us to be at odds anymore. I love you and not being close to you these last few weeks and knowing that you were let down by me has been the worst feeling in the world. I-I broke up with her."
"Dad I-"
"Please let me finish. I didn't want to see it at the time, but you were right. I was making a huge mistake and I hope you can forgive me," he said squeezing my hand. He looked very broken up, which made me feel like I had treated him like a self-righteous brat and now I feel even more awful because I'm leaving him and going to Metropolis.
"I-I'm moving to Metropolis," I blurted out. He looked confused and sad at the same time.
"When," he asked stunned.
"As soon as possible," I returned nervously. He looked down at the floor. "I'm doing this for me. I need a change of scenery for awhile that's all."
"I hope I haven't made you feel that way," he replied.
"Maybe, just a little," I replied honestly. It was the truth, but he wasn't the main reason I was leaving. Bruce wasn't either. The men in my life don't run my narrative, I do. "I'm leaving because I want to get some perspective. I've been living in this Gotham bubble for so long, that I forget that the world isn't so cynical and cruel. I just want to see what Metropolis has to offer, for just a little while," I said hoping he'd understand.
He looked at me a bit worried. "I also need to apologize," I continued, "I shouldn't have treated you the way I did. You are a good man dad, but you are also human. I just forget sometimes. It's naive, but I like to think you have never made a mistake in your life."
He smiled a bit and just stared at me.
"What?" I asked.
"I must have done something amazing in past life because I don't know why else God would give me a daughter who is so wise and kind," he said a bit welled up.
"Daddy," I welled up too and hugged him, "not any past life, this life."
