Cursed

Chapter Thirty-One: A Plan is Formed

.….….…..…..….….….

November 14, 2012

The cold fall air chills me to the bone as I stroll through the streets of Split City. A single leaf tumbles ahead of me, a distant shape in the light of the moon. Nerves prickle at my stomach despite my best efforts to push them away. They grow stronger as I approach my destination, serving as a cruel reminder of my failures. A disappointed headmistress. A relationship in shambles. A team whose leader is too incompetent to pass a simple exam.

I grimace as the entrance of the park comes into view. Memories of the day I spent here in Split City with Jade and Roy fill my head, only to be abruptly replaced by memories of stolen evenings with Leo. The park is an important part of my history. Yet every time I think about visiting once again, I'm filled with dread.

Leo is sitting on a bench by the entrance. I buck it up and force a smile, silently joining him. We don't talk for a while, instead enjoying the chilly yet beautiful night. It's nice.

I yawn, stretching my leg. Glancing over at Leo, I gather my nerves and courage before speaking my mind.

"I have to go back."

Leo looks up, startled. "Already?"

I shake my head. "Not to the Academy. To the witch's house."

Leo frowns, considering this. And then, something unexpected happens. He laughs.

"Lucky, I love you, but why on earth would you go back to that heck hole?"

I bite my lip, gripping the cold metal park bench for support. "I need answers, Leo."

"What kind of answers do you expect to get from a pile of wood in the middle of nowhere? Your captor's home address?" Leo scoffs.

"It's only on the outskirts of Jump City. It would be a 45 minute drive at most. I can't live the rest of my life wondering why this happened to me!" I snap, crossing my arms defensively.

Leo sighs, shaking his head. "Okay, fine! Don't be so dramatic. Geez. And just when exactly do you plan to do this? Cause in case you haven't noticed, your schedule is pretty booked now that you have to play catch up."

He has a point. It's going to take a lot of work to get back on the Headmistress's good graces. The boys and I have taken on extra work, picking up every extracurricular we can. I just… can't let them down again. I refuse to.

I consider this for a moment. "Guess I'll skip graduation then. It's not like I'll be noticed anymore."

Leo scoffs. "Last year you told me attendance was mandatory."

"Yeah, well, I've spent the past four years sneaking out to see you. How hard can it be?"

I'm being uncharacteristically careless, and Leo clearly knows it. He studies me carefully, and I feel myself recoil under his gaze. Leo knows me almost as well as my team does. If he'd bother to show up every week, he'd even know me better than they do. I'm concerned that he'll figure out I'm hiding something. After all, how do you tell your boyfriend that you see a stranger every night in your dreams? Let alone that you're actually concerned about this stranger.

I swallow the lump in my throat, forcing myself to look Leo in the eyes. I haven't seen the boy since the night he disappeared. As silly as it sounds, I'm getting worried. I hate to admit it, but I've gotten attached. Even if I wasn't, I know that my imagination at least partially based the boy on the one I met during my encounter with the Justice League. He's real, and I can't shake the theory that he could be in trouble. This, as well as the memory of seeing the witch before my graduation from the Junior HIVE, are enough to raise concern. There's clearly something supernatural going on, and I suspect the witch has something to do with it. I'm going to get to the bottom of it.

"Okay," Leo says, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. "Graduation night it is."

I grin, shaking his hand firmly. "Graduation night it is."

It'll be okay, I mentally promise the boy. I'm coming for you.

Hi, once again! Sorry it took me so long to update, and for such a short chapter. I didn't realize it was this short when I wrote it in my notebook, and then I typed it up and felt pretty disappointed, lol. I have a surprise for you, though! You'll see soon enough ;)

Thank you everyone who has followed or added this story to their favorites!

Quote of the day!

"Hunkle Day may be over physically, but it will always be Hunkle Day in our hearts." -my sister, via her Twitter account that is solely dedicated to an inside joke on her Discord server

(Hawk + Uncle = Hunkle. I honestly don't know what's going on with that server anymore, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask)

May the odds (and Hunkles?) be ever in your favor,
