It was late, or was it early? Harry couldn't tell sitting on a bench in a hall it must've been hours since he handed off Susan to the Healers. They rushed her into one of their healing rooms and they haven't been able to see her yet.

"Here, drink this." Harry heard and looked up to see Daphne holding a cup of water for him. He smiled weakly and took the cup from her hand careful not to bother Hermione who had fallen asleep on his shoulder just a little while ago. She still had tear streaks staining her face as everything just seem to overwhelm her.

Not that any of the rest of them were in better shape. Daphne looked just as exhausted as Harry felt and she had a few smudges of her mascara from her own tears but she managed to pull herself together. Harry felt tired and very worried but mainly he was angry. If Voldemort showed up right now, there was little doubt that Harry wouldn't even think about throwing the killing curse right into his face.

"Thanks, Daph." He said and took a few sips of the cold water helping to refresh him somewhat. Harry then looked over to the door that lead to a healing room and above it, a single lamp currently tinted red was lighting it. And in front of the door was Amelia, as soon as they arrived and got Susan to the Healers Jones took off to inform Amelia what had happened.

As far as he knew Jones and a large detachment of Aurors had left for the Bones Manor and had yet to report back. As for Amelia, she was pacing in front of the door and no one, nurse or otherwise was brave enough to approach her.

"She's going to be okay, as horrible as this sounds, she didn't lose her leg to a curse or something similar. Since it was... brute force... they should be able to grow it back." Daphne explained in an attempt to calm his nerves. It was morbid but it was a bit of good news.

"That's good." He replied taking another sip of the water. "I'll need to contact Saurfang soon," Harry said.

"Why?" Daphne asked.

"Something, a Ward probably, kept that demon from entering Veilstone. We need to find out what it is and see if we can recreate it." Harry explained and Daphne nodded.

"That's good thinking, it is concerning though, that the Demon was able to break through the Wards at Bones Manor without tripping any alarms. Why was it after Susan anyway?"

"It wasn't," Hermione said blinking the sleep out of her eyes.

"Hermione, we didn't mean to wake you," Harry said as she leaned up off his shoulder and Hermione just shook her head.

"I was barely sleeping, it's fine." She said taking his hand in her own.

"What did you mean, it wasn't?" Daphne asked and Hermione sighed.

"There was no way for it to know that Susan was going to be at the Manor. And Riddle wouldn't have left something like that up to chance. It was most likely after Amelia but then Susan got there first." Hermione said.

"Maybe we can take that as a good thing," Daphne muttered and both Harry and Hermione looked at her incredulously.

"No! I didn't mean for it to sound like that. I am saying that perhaps this proves that Riddle doesn't have such great control over the Demon. If it abandoned its orders to attack Susan."

"Or Riddle didn't give it clear orders, he could've just said to attack the Bones Manor and kill anyone inside." Hermione countered and Daphne had to agree.

"That's true," Daphne said and with a sigh she let her face fall into her hands. Harry then began to soothingly rub her back just the way she liked it, light circular motions with just the fingertips. He could feel her relax and the tension leave her as he did. The group remained quiet for a few minutes more before the door to the hall opened and in walked Kingsly and Jones, Jones had on her owl mask and hood up.

"Minister." Kingsly called and Amelia looked over to the two for a moment before returning to her pacing.

"Report." She said her voice a bit gruff.

"I am sorry Minister, your home was destroyed. There was very little left to salvage."

"I don't care, what about the creature that attacked my niece?" Amelia asked a bite in her tone. It was unnecessary but it was understandable given the circumstances.

"The creature was nowhere to be found Minister but I did find this," Jones said holding up a few thick vials filled with some sort of black ooze with green pustules. "I believe it's a piece of the creature, from when it was rebuffed from Harry's home and burned by his beast. I am going to study it and see if I can't get some clues about how to hurt this thing big time." Jones said and while Grindelwald told them extradimensional fire could harm it, the only one present that could wield things like Hellfire and Purgatory flame was Harry. And Witches or Wizards with enough mastery to control Fiendfyre were few and far between.

"There was something else I found odd when we arrived the protective wards surrounding your home were untouched. No signs of forced entry or even breaking, which would explain why your alarms never went off."

"How is that possible? How did it even get into my Home in the first place then?" Amelia asked her brow furrowed.

"I don't know Minsiter, but I will find out," Jones said and Amelia visibly sagged as she pinched the bridge of her nose and let out a breath.

"Very well, until we figure this out we must secure the Ministry. Double the guards and I want regular patrols around the clock."

"If any of them can conjure and control Fiendfyre they should be included too," Harry said and Amelia looked at him and sighed.

"I know of only two wizards that can summon and control Fiendfyre. Dumbledore and Moody. Dumbledore is a fugitive and Moody is only one man he can't be everywhere at once." Amelia said.

"No one else can?" Daphne asked and Kingsly shook his head.

"Summoning Fiendfyre is the easy part but controlling it is another thing entirely. It would be ill-advised to have people summon Fiendfyre and then have it rampage around the Ministry."

"Then tell them the creature is susceptible to fire, it won't be all that effective but Incendio and Confringo are well-known spells right?" Harry suggested and Amelia nodded and turned back to Kingsly.

"Get it done." She said and Kinglsy nodded.

"Yes, Minister." Kingsly replied and left.

"I'm, heading back to Veilstone. I need to start right away."

"Contact Saurfang first, we need to see if he can identify whatever ward it was that repelled the Demon," Harry said and Jones nodded before heading out. It was only a few minutes later that the doors to the operation room opened and a healer stepped out.

The healer that stepped out was dressed in the typical healer robes and they were pristine. No doubt she cleaned them just before she came out. Though all the magic in the world couldn't keep the exhaustion out of her eyes and face. Harry and the others were on their feet in a flash and stood next to Amelia.

"Minister, we've managed to stop the bleeding and seal the wound. However..." Harry's heart clenched, why did this have to get worse? "I am sorry to say we were unable to regenerate the leg."

"What?" Amelia asked her eyes going wide.

"But there was no magic, it wasn't a curse or a stray spell," Daphne said and the Healer just shook her head.

"I'm sorry, while you are correct there was something, some sort of toxin in the wound we were unable to extract. It functioned similarly to the necrosis curse, we had to amputate the leg at the knee. I'm sorry but there is nothing more we could do."

Harry, Hermione, and Daphne had no idea how to explain how they felt. Like that feeling when you fall in a dream. But unlike in a dream where you wake up, this feeling would not be going away. Amelia looked ready to murder as her fist clenched hard enough for her nails to draw blood. The healer just stood aside and held the door open and Amelia entered followed closely by the rest.

"She'll be waking up in a moment, there will be no pain. Also here, I know it doesn't mean much but these may help." The healer said handing out a few pieces of parchment. Fliers for wizarding prosthetics, most of them looked rustic. Amelia just went straight for Susan's bed but Hermione grabbed the fliers.

"We'll do one last check-up, but she will be cleared to return home by tonight." The healer said before leaving the group. Harry came right next to her bed while Amelia summoned a chair to her. Susan was a bit pale but she looked much better than when she was first brought here. Everyone couldn't help but glance down and felt pain from the missing lump from where her leg should be hidden under a white sheet.

Harry wanted to say something, anything but even thinking of trying to speak felt like someone chained his heart and tied it to a stone.

"Why was she even at the Manor?" Amelia asked as she gripped her Nieces hand in her own.

"We don't know, she just told us she needed to grab something," Hermione said and Amelia's eyes scrunched in concern.

"Dobby," Harry called and the Elf popped next to him.

"Master Harry? Is the missus alright, Dobby has been most worried." Dobby asked wringing his hands nervously.

"She's..." Harry looked over and again that weight returned. "She's out of danger. When she was attacked did she have something with her?" Harry asked and Dobby nodded.

"Yes, Dobby saw it after... after cleaning. It was a book."

"Bring it here," Harry said and Dobby nodded before apparating away. After a few moments Dobby returned with a black book in his hands and he held it out to Harry.

"Mistress Susan had this Master Harry Potter," Dobby said and Harry took the book. It definitely wasn't the kind of book he would expect to find in the Bones Manor. But Amelia immediately recognized it and her eyes went wide.

"Oh, Susan. What have you done?"

"Amelia?" Daphne asked.

"That book should've been burned a long time ago!" She snarled glaring at the Tome as if it had just insulted her.

"What do you mean? What is this?" Harry asked.

"The Forgotten Legacy of my Family. One that we spent generations hiding." Every head whipped to look at Susan who had awakened just in time to hear Harry's question.

"Susan!" Amelia lunged forward gingerly embracing the girl. Susan raised one of her arms to wrap around her Aunt weakly returning her embrace.

"Susan, how do you feel?" Hermione asked and Susan smiled weekly.

"Tired, but I'm alive right?" She said and Harry glanced down.

"Susan... you're-" Harry began and Susan clenched her eyes.

"No, don't... I know." Susan gasped out and at that moment she flexed the toes on her remaining leg. A silence fell over the group, no one knew what to say. What could you say? That everything was alright or was going to be alright? Try to act like this isn't going to affect their lives? It was, and trying to paint over it would just be disingenuous.

"Susan, what were you thinking?" Amelia asked after a few moments. Susan didn't answer right away but just looked down. "This Book..."

"I've made my choice Aunty, I won't argue about it."

"Susan it cost you your leg! This book has been nothing but trouble for our family!"

"Don't you think I know that!?" Susan hissed then winced a bit and Amelia's expression softened.

"That's enough both of you," Harry said as he looked between the two women. Susan was in no condition to be getting into what would probably be quite the charged argument.

"Susan, what is this?" Harry asked and Susan looked at him and then at the book.

"It's the Bones Family Necronomicon." She said after a pause and Daphne and Hermione's eyes widened. Harry was unfamiliar with the term.

"Necronomicon?" Harry asked.

"Book of the Dead, a Grimoire for Necromancy," Amelia explained her stern look returning as she stared at the book. Now Harry did know what Necromancy was.

"Summoning the dead?" Harry asked looking down at the book maybe he should've guessed given all the bone imagery in the book.

"Not exactly... It's more like manipulating aspects of death. Bones, corpses, even spirits." Susan said as she reached out for the book and Harry gave it to her much to the disagreement of Amelia.

"Your family kept this hidden?"

"More than that, we erased it. Having a history of Necromancy is not exactly the kind of thing you would want to let the world know." Susan said as her finger traced the skull on the cover.

"For good reason, the spells and rituals in that book are dark Susan."

"Dark and Light are labels, what matters is what you do with the power," Susan argued back.

"What good can come from desecrating graves? Sacrifices and blood rituals?" Amelia returned and it was here that Daphne entered the conversation.

"Amelia, I don't know about this family history but I do know Susan. And I think we both know that she would never do something without good reason. She has more than earned my trust, I think she's earned yours too." Daphne said and Susan smiled at her as Amelia looked between the two.

"Why did you even get the book?" Amelia asked and Susan returned her attention to Amelia.

"Aunty, we're at war. I won't bring anything less than everything I have to offer to the table. To protect the people I love." Susan said firmly and Harry looked at her concerned.

"Susan, you know you already brought plenty to the table. You have nothing to prove." Harry said gently and Susan shook her head.

"I know I don't, but I will not bring anything but my best not just for you but everyone," Susan said firmly and Harry saw that spark in her eye. That flare of determination to do what she believed to be right and he couldn't argue against it. Not that he wanted to in the first place, he trusted her completely. Besides, he imagined he had a look like that, way back at the beginning of the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

"It's done now, what we should be focusing on is Susan's recovery," Harry said and Amelia sighed but, with hesitance, she nodded.

"You're right. I need to go back to the Ministry and help Kinglsy organize the Aurors and address the people." Amelia stood and looked at the book but said nothing as she leaned down to kiss Susan on the top of her head.

"She'll be safe in Veilstone, you have my word," Harry said and Amelia nodded squeezed Susan's hand one last time then turned to leave. Amelia stopped just short of exiting the room as she turned back one last time.

"Susie, I do trust you. But that book is dangerous, just be careful." Amelia said before leaving. Susan sighed as she sank back into her pillow the book still in her hands. A feeling of fatigue was quickly washing over her.

"Susan?" Hermione asked placing a comforting hand on Susan's shoulder.

"I'm just tired," Susan said as she could feel her eyelids grow heavy.

"We'll stay here, we won't leave your side," Harry said leaning on her bed but Susan shook her head.

"No, you should go back, and figure out what repelled the Demon. Daphne should go too, she's an enchantress after all." Susan said while fighting to stay awake.

"Alright Susan, just get some rest," Harry said as he looked to Hermione.

"I'll stay, you two can go." She said and the pair nodded but not before placing a kiss on either of Susan's cheeks before she returned to sleep. Harry and Daphne walked out but Harry was quite reluctant to leave.

"Demona, stay with them, protect them," Harry ordered and Demona lept out in her shadow and pounced back into the room. After that, he felt a bit more secure as he followed Daphne through the large hospital to their public floo's.

"Should we go to Gringotts first?" Daphne asked.

"No, knowing Jones she probably already has Saurfang at the Keep," Harry said as they both Floo'd back to Veilstone. When they entered the Keep was quiet but that was to be expected. Looking at the clock Harry realized that they had been up all night and it was already morning. So with that, the pair made their way through the halls and entered the Dining Hall where they found everyone sitting in chairs. Breakfast was served but no one looked particularly hungry and no one looked like they got a good night's sleep.

Blaise looked up and noticed Harry as his eyes went wide. He shot up to his feet and rushed forward. His action caught the other's attention and once they saw Harry they did the same. Blaise was the first to reach him and for a moment he just looked at Harry unsure of what exactly to say until he found his voice.

"Is... Is she going to be alright?" He asked concern clear on his face as well as the face of his other friends.

"She is going to be okay. But she... she lost the leg." Harry said his eyes downcast.

"Oh pup." Sirius said as he stepped forward "I came as soon as I heard." His godfather said and pulled Harry into a hug. One that Harry eagerly return as he sagged in his Godfather's embrace. They stayed like that for a few moments before separating.

"Harry of course if there is anything, anything at all, just let us know and we will help," Remus said coming to Sirius's other side and placing his hand on Harry's shoulder. Harry nodded thankful to have such good friends and family on his side.

"Thank you, Have Saurfang and Jones returned yet?" He asked and Sirius nodded.

"Yes, they're out in the training yard but Jones looked a bit miffed and she had an empty vial out," Sirius said as Daphne's eyes narrowed.

"Empty?" She asked and Sirius nodded.

"We have to talk to them," Harry said and Blaise raised his brow.

"Have the two of you slept yet?" He asked and Harry and Daphne shared a look.

"Harry you need your rest. You too Daphne." Neville said as he had the same look of concern as the others.

"We will, we need to take care of this first," Harry said and Sirius crossed his arms.

"Fine but you better turn in the second you're done or else I'll sick Kreature on both of you." He said and Harry chuckled glad for the brief lift of his spirits. The pair left the still concerned group as they made their way to the center training yard. Sure enough, they found both Jones and Saurfang, with the Goblin looking through some sort of monocle telescope contraption.

"Jones, Saurfang!" Harry called out as he and Daphne approached. The two turned to look and Sirius was right something was bothering Jones based on her expression.

"What is it?" Harry asked and Jones held up the empty vial.

"My sample faded before I even left Gringotts. It's like it was never even there in the first place." Jones said stuffing the vial into her pocket.

"Any idea why?" Daphne asked and Jones shook her head.

"And Saurfang? Have you found anything?" Harry asked the Goblin as he looked over his notes.

"Well, I already had details of your wards when I oversaw the updates. So most of them were replaced with the new ones however there were a handful that were left untouched." He said as he took the device from his face and flicked two switches and held it out to Harry.

"Look through it." He instructed and Harry took the device holding it to his eye and saw a sudden burst of color and then he could see something like a dome overhead. It was multicolored and looked like some form of a geometrical spider web. Each line of the web has something like a mix of what looked most like mathematical equations but written out with runes and symbols instead of numbers.

They interconnected and flared off in some spots and the whole thing pulsed every so often and the dome fell off beyond the walls where he couldn't see. That's when Saurfang spoke up.

"What you are seeing now are the modern updated Wards of your home, you have top-of-the-line protections but there is something else. Flick the top switch and the second to last switch." Saurfang said and Harry did so before putting the device back to his face.

Once he did his vision was tinted blue and he looked back up to see a different dome. This one looked more like a dome of water made of light, with a golden color it reminded Harry of the reflection of light one would see off the surface of the water. Only it moved very slowly and methodically with no real discernable pattern to it.

"Now you are seeing the ancient wards, very different right?" Saurfang asked as Harry took the device off his face and handed it to Daphne to look through and she did for a few moments before speaking.

"I've never seen a ward look like that before." She then flicked the switches like Harry did only the opposite and looked through again and nodded.

"Now that I recognize, that's an advanced anti-apparition ward with a strong notice me not charm weaved into it. Plus a soundproofing ward as well." Daphne said looking back down and handing the device to Saurfang. The Goblin nodded at her words.

"Good eye, the ward you recognized is what we would call a modern ward, the other one is an ancient ward. Do you remember when your House elf could not find you even when you called him, the first time you came here?" Saurfang asked and Harry nodded.

"The ancient ward is what caused that, you see modern-day wards are more stable but they are not as impenetrable as one would think. After all, House-elves can apparate in and out of any house or building with these types of wards. They can even do it in Hogwarts without being a Hogwarts elf." Suarfang said and Harry thought back to his second year when Dobby got into Hogwarts to try and misguidedly help Harry.

"Yes, I've noticed that before."

"Yes, you see, while modern wards are easier to erect and maintain and improve given the way they are structured they are not impenetrable. They are brick walls, strong but with weak points. And a being such as an elf can find those points and pass through easily. Now the other ward is an ancient ward and it truly is impenetrable, but unlike modern wards, it would take a master enchanter or enchantress of exceptional skill in order to create one. Not only that they are notoriously difficult to maintain without a proper power source in order to create them. Without one they would decay over time." Saurfang explained.

"So what powers our wards then?" Harry asked.

"Most likely a leyline right?" Daphne asked and Saurfang nodded.

"Yes, These mountains have quite an abundance of residual magic from a nearby Layline. Another reason why this keep was built here. Now these ancient wards are unlike modern wards also due to the fact that there are no gaps or chinks in their creation if they are made right. This is why things cannot just get through such as your House-elf or this creature that Miss Jones informed me of."

"So is there a way to recreate these wards around some key locations? Like the Ministry and Hogwarts?" Harry asked and Saurfang thought for a moment.

"The ministry is impossible due to its location in London and there are no leylines or sources of residual magic. However, Hogwarts is very possible as it sits directly on a leyline which is why its wards are very powerful. The issue is with finding someone with sufficient knowledge and skill to create the wards. This keep is older than Hogwarts and so is the technique that created the wards."

"I thought you said Hogwarts had better wards than this place when we first arrived?" Harry asked and Saurfang shook his head.

"A mistake on my part, you see I presumed that these ancient wards were simple but upon closer inspection they are quite complex. You see they work on not just a physical and magical aspect but also the metaphysical. It is not too far a stretch to say that these protections are alive in a sense, thought and memory, recognition to an owner, and a will to protect and hide from the world. Hence why none will ever be able to enter without either your permission or the destruction of the wards. If you wish to erect this kind of ward around Hogwarts it would take the knowledge that I do not have."

"There has to be a tome about it in the library," Jones said as she walked off. There was a bit of a stomp in her step as she was still a bit upset at what happened to her specimen.

"I'll help her look," Daphne said squeezing Harry's hand before she left to follow Jones to the Library. Harry then turned back to Saurfang who looked uncharacteristically remorseful.

"Miss Jones informed me what happened to your beloved, you have my sympathies, My Lord," Saurfang said and Harry nodded.

"Thank you Saurfang, it's been a rather rough time," Harry said rubbing his eyes as he felt the sting of tiredness.

"If it pleases you, My kin are quite advanced when it comes to replacing limbs. Your people leave much to be desired on that front." Saurfang said.

"Oh, and the price?" Harry asked and was a bit surprised when Saurfang shook his head.

"For this, I am sure the King would be most generous. After all, you were instrumental in the strides my kind has taken with your people. A simple prosthetic is nothing to that end." Saurfang said and Harry felt a rush of gratefulness flood him as he smiled. He had remembered Moody's fake leg and that was something he never wanted to see Susan have to deal with it.

"That would be incredible Saurfang. Thank you," Harry said.

"Very good, I shall take my leave and return to Gringotts then. I'll create a list of prominent enchanters and enchantresses that you can look through if you choose to pursue this course of action further." The Goblin said as he began to walk away but before he got very far he stopped.

"My Lord Potter, I will not give false niceties to you as I do not understand what you are going through. But I will say what I know to be true. I know that you are a strong young Lord and Wizard. I know that you have surprised me far more than I ever thought possible. And I know that I am proud not just to be your Account overseer but I am proud to know you, Harry Potter. And I also know that if there is one man that can win this war, I'd bet all my galleons it is you." Saurfang as he bowed in respect to Harry. Harry straightened holding his head high as Saurfang spoke.

"And I am proud to call you a friend Saurfang," Harry said and Saurfang smirked as he nodded and turned on his heel and left. Taking in a deep breath Harry took a breath to think about his position. To go through all he knew at the moment.

He needed to go and destroy the Horcrux that could be at the Gaunt shack. He needed to master his Grimoire so that he can teach his loves and make sure they can better protect themselves. So many things that he needed to get done. For now, he would head to the Library and help however he could.

In a similar position to Harry though for entirely different reasons was Voldemort. He was currently alone in his chambers and skulking about in the shadows was the Demon mumbling to itself and twitching every so often as it did. Looking back its form seemed to constantly shift until it settled back to the form of the wicked plague doctor that it usually had when speaking to him.

"You failed me. You were to kill the Minister."

"Quashili... Failure... no."

"No?"

"Urai munu panz gula, nejal pokahl," The Demon spoke its voice raspy as it suddenly and unnaturally scurried up a wall into a dark corner of the ceiling.

"Vahlkiel! You know I do not speak this language of yours! Speak plainly!"

"I reduced that home to ashes, as you commanded." Vahlkiel hissed and suddenly a copy of Voldemort dropped from the ceiling shadows but was stopped short a few feet from the floor by a rope around his neck with a sickening crunch.

"You shall go and raze the home of the Bones family!" His copy spoke with a garbled voice before being yanked back into the shadows.

"But you did not kill anyone, in that you failed."

"Xiahl! Fire! Burns and bites! Consumes and grows! Minister not a part of the order!" Vahlkiel screeched as something like a mutated spider came scuttling out of the corner before dropping down to the bed and going under it. Despite himself, Riddle took a few steps back.

"What fire? You failed because of a simple flame." He asked and a hand gripped the bedpost, then another, then another. Soon a dozen hands were clawing at the edges of the bed scratching the wood and the carpet with long blackened fingernails.

"Hellfire, beast of rage and crimson. Umdrah bi boraz, Blood and war." It hissed and Voldemort thought for a moment before remembering Potters's beast.

"The wolf, the wolf can defeat you," Voldemort said his eyes narrowed. The hands then retracted back into the shadows of the bed and Vahlkiel was silent. Voldemort waited for a few moments but the Demon was silent.

"No." Voldemort whirled around as he heard the voice behind him as Vahlkiel appeared in his Plague Doctors form. "Surprised for but a moment, one fled, into the emerald flames. Old protections, I could not pass, I could not kill. I maimed." The Demon said and from his coat, something fell and hit his floor with a thud.

Riddle took out his wand and conjured a light to see what the Demon had dropped and was surprised to find a leg coated with dried blood and still wearing a shoe that was scorched.

"Amelia was not missing any limbs, whose is this?" Voldemort asked and was met by the sight of the young Susan Bones battered and bruised with a missing leg lying on the floor.

"One of Potters' lovers. The Bones girl, well done." Voldemort said a sick smile on his face as he watched a long clawed limb suddenly reach for the form of Susan and yank her into the shadows. A few seconds later Vahlkiel returned in his doctor form.

"Perhaps the good Madam Minister would like to have this returned to her." He laughed as he nudged the limb with his foot. He then looked up to the Demon who was still and silent.

"There is something I need you to do for me... There is an annoying thorn in my side. A witch who bears an owl mask. She has caused many problems with my plans and it is time she is wiped from the board." Voldemort said as he approached the window and stared out at the still-early sun. A sun whose light didn't reach into this room with this entity of terror.

"Find out who she is, then kill her." He ordered as he took his wand and drew blood for his payment as the Demon already had its maw open.
