LAST TIME
As I released my arrow, I heard Percy shoot as well. As my arrow pierced the monster's heart from behind, the bullet blew its brains out, killing our target.
We looked at each other and grinned. Percy held out his fist and we fist-bumped.
"We make a good team," He said.
Well, he wasn't wrong. Every time we had fought together, namely Westover hall, Othyrs, and now, we had dispatched our enemies with little to no effort. Of course, we both were good fighters, great fighters in fact but, I strongly felt that together we would be nearly undefeatable. The world's best archer and the world's best swordsman… the best swordsman since my uncle Alexander at least.
While I didn't want to dishonor his memory, I would have to admit that Percy Jackson would've given my Uncle Alexander a run for his money in sword fighting. Yes, Percy Jackson was that damn good in sword fighting that he would've given the god of sword fighting a tough competition.
Also, there was the little fact that Percy always reminded me of him. A part of me felt that Percy was my uncle's reincarnation. The similarities between Percy and him were staggering.
But nonetheless, despite my wandering thoughts, one thing struck. Percy and I would make a great team.
Ch.26 Befriending the Eternal Man-Hater
PERCY POV
"So, how is it going with the hunt?" Athena asked as we took a break from sparring.
"It is good. It is a fun place now that the hunters have stopped glaring at me." I replied, wiping sweat off my forehead. I was feeling a little jealous of Athena at the moment. Being a goddess, she had hardly broken a sweat from their spar, even if it had ended up in a tie for us with her spear at my heart and my sword at her throat. I, on the other hand, was soaked in my own sweat from the intense spar.
"Well, they have gotten used to your presence in the past month, I would say. Have you begun taking training sessions for them yet, as it was suggested in the council?"
"Nah, I do take it for Thalia, Annabeth, and Bianca but not the rest. I have sparred with Zoe and Phoebe a couple of times."
"You won... I hope."
"Yeah. Zoe gave a tough fight though. But, training with you did its wonders. She was no match in front of what you put up." I replied making Athena smirk.
"But enough about me. What about you? Done anything interesting as of late?" I asked.
Athena hummed thoughtfully, "I gave a lecture at Stanford University a few days ago and attended a scientific convention held in Los Angeles. Before that, I acted as a tour guide for a short time at Hoover Dam and helped your friend, Thalia out of a tight spot during your quest."
"Really? What happened?"
"Well, she saw a monster and chased after it. Then she was lost in the area, unable to reunite with the group. I pointed her in the right direction. After that, I went a bit further before flashing away, accidentally vaporizing a few monsters that were after her." She winked.
"Ah, I am sure she would appreciate it."
"She didn't recognize me actually. At least, not until much later. She did sacrifice a nice sandwich for me later." Athena informed me and I nodded.
"But that aside, what all is my sister teaching you? I am quite curious to know about the special training she is giving you."
"Well, she didn't really teach me anything for the first two weeks. It was more of her assessing my skills. Making me pull tires, run, hide, shoot… and so on. It was usually done as a game. Usually, it was just the two of us but a couple of times, it was me versus the hunt while she chilled."
Athena raised her eyebrows and I elaborated. "Well, hunting games. She gave me a head-start into the forest. I needed to hide there for an hour without getting caught. The huntresses tracked me in the meantime. Artemis just flashed beside me and we chatted as the huntresses hunted for me."
"Did they find you?"
"Not in the time limit, but yes, they did. So, well, I won, much to their chagrin." I chuckled.
"Good. I expected nothing less." Athena stated with a regal nod.
"Well, then next time, Artemis asked five hunters to stand in line and shoot arrows at me while I defended myself."
"WHAT?" Athena shouted, whirling towards me.
"Don't worry," I waved her off. "None of the arrows could hit me. And they were blunt arrows. None had the power to even remotely penetrate the armor I have."
"Oh… but the fact remains that the exercise was dangerous!"
"She was testing my dodging, Athena. She knew how competent I was. Of course, the hunt was pissed that none could hit me, but it did stop them from messing with me."
Athena sighed. "Percy… I don't know what to do about you."
"Have a swordfight?" I asked innocently.
Athena snorted. "I am not breaking my winning streak by doing a sword fight with you."
"We just had a tie."
"They don't count. My winning streak is still on."
"Last ten matches were one win for me, four wins for you, and five ties! Your winning streak is two right now if you don't count ties."
"A winning streak is a winning streak regardless of whether it is two or twenty," Athena waved me off. "And also, I still dispute that win of yours. You cheated."
"I caused a distraction. There is a difference."
"Cheating is cheating!"
"It was a tactic!"
"Cheating!"
"Tactic!"
"I am the goddess of wisdom and warfare. I know the difference between cheating and tactics. Throwing your sweaty t-shirt at me is cheating when you are sparring."
"Well, it worked! So, it was a tactic!" I retorted.
"Even cheating works but it is not a tactic. What sort of shit argument is that?" Athena huffed.
"One given by me!"
"Well, it has to make sense!"
"It does."
"To whom?"
"To me."
"You cannot declare yourself the winner!"
"Isn't that exactly what you're doing as well?" I retorted with a shit-eating smirk.
"No, I am trying to prove that you cheated and won!"
"See, you said that I won!" I grinned triumphantly.
"Wait no, that is not what I meant!"
"Too late," I said in a sing-song voice.
"Alright. Get up. I am going to kick your ass right now."
"You will try," I said, jumping to my feet.
"We'll see," Athena replied before we charged at each other, engaging in yet another fight.
PERCY POV
I found myself landing my chariot once again in the middle of the hunters' camp. I jumped down the chariot and told Phoenix to shrink it into a box. It was a truly wonderful piece of enchantment. Quite nifty.
I looked around and saw that the huntresses were doing their own work, hardly sparing a glance at me.
Trying to intimidate me when I landed had grown old for all of us after the first three times, so they no longer bothered to do it. Also, they recognized my chariot well enough to not mistake it for a threat.
"Jackson!" A nearby huntress, Agnes said, jogging towards the said tent with scrolls in her hands. "Thank gods you are here. My lady is in the planning tent. Come fast. We have a situation."
I raised my eyebrows but jogged after her into the tent, pushing open the flap and entering. Artemis was standing at the head of the table, bent to look at a huge map of America. Zoe, Thalia, Annabeth, Phoebe, Sophia, and Irene were standing or sitting around that table as well.
Sophia was another daughter of Athena in the hunt, one who had joined in the mid-nineteenth century. While Irene was a daughter of Demeter and one of the oldest members of the hunt along with Zoe, Phoebe, and Agnes. Agnes was a daughter of Hermes.
Thalia was likely among the group because she was the most powerful huntress Artemis had. And Annabeth and Sophia because they were the best at making plans.
Artemis looked up as we entered and her face circled through a storm of emotions. "Thank gods you're here, Percy," Artemis said with relief evident in her voice. Even the other girls looked happy to see me including Irene and Sophia. Annabeth looked shocked for a moment before grinning while Thalia snorted with laughter.
"What is happening? Agnes told me that you have a situation? Something serious?" I asked, ignoring Thalia's reaction.
"Yes, very serious. One of our scouts has reported a monster gathering not too far from here. From what she could see, they were at least a hundred of them. Actual numbers are unknown. But she did see a Drakon and several giants among them. That is not to count the number of armed cyclopes, Dracaena, Empusas, or even the hellhounds and other creatures."
"So, why are you panicking so much? A hundred monsters against the whole hunt are no biggie. That is not even three monsters to each girl considering the numbers you have." I stated.
"That is not the thing, Percy," Artemis said grimly. "There is this camp of monsters barely a mile and half away from us. In addition, we are having a code red situation. In the last hour, three monster groups have been reported across the country, not counting the one near the camp. Each has numbers in hundreds, Percy. Hundreds. And we need to take them out before they move and we lose them."
"That is worrying. How far are they from here?"
"Well, the distances vary from a mile and a half to more than seventy miles away from our camp. Here, see the map." Annabeth said and I instantly went through the map, noting the places she had marked on the map. "Also, there is a pattern. The groups get bigger the farther they are away at least according to estimates. The nearest one has around a hundred or so monsters. The second has around Two hundred and fifty monsters. The third one has a similar number and the fourth one is the biggest with an estimate around five hundred or more."
"This is a planned attack by the Titan Lord," I said contemplatively.
#My thoughts exactly.# Alexander agreed.
"Planned attack? As in… what do you mean to say? It is obviously planned. Monsters don't gather like this." Phoebe said waving her hands as she spoke.
"Yes, I know that. But I am saying that their plan is bigger. Likely, to cause as immense damage to the hunt as possible. If they all attack soon after each other, the hunt would be overwhelmed. The waves of monsters would tire us and we won't have time to treat any wounded. Also, if you hadn't received the news, we would've been caught unaware, not expecting another wave of attack after the first one and definitely not after the second."
"That does make a lot of sense," Artemis agreed. "We cannot wait for them to attack to have the home-ground advantage. We need to attack them on our own accord."
"My lady, I am afraid that if we engage so soon one after the other, there might be casualties as one fight after another would tire us out. And we will also lose the home-ground advantage." Zoe said.
"Well, she ain't wrong," Thalia muttered.
"I think we should attack," Phoebe declared.
"Alright, wait." I interrupted. "First, things first. We need to eliminate the one near us at any cost. If they charge, we won't have time to prepare. Do you have a plan ready for it?"
"I got that information not even ten minutes ago. We had made a vague plan but you being here changes things drastically. With a powerhouse like you, we can make much better plans and engage from afar being less worried about the close-ranged fighters."
"I was thinking along the lines that why don't we two… only we engage in melee? Rest would shoot arrows, providing cover fire." I asked Artemis.
"That is not a bad idea. But do you think that you will be in top shape after the first two groups? You are good but not invincible Percy. You will tire after a while. Also, we don't know how much of your powers you would have to use. And we are facing a total of more than a thousand monsters." Artemis stated.
"I am pretty sure I will do fine for the first two. Even the third one… but yes, the fourth one is doubtful. But if I consume nectar and ambrosia, I will make it through. Also, I will have you watching my back."
"There is a limit to how much you can consume, Kelpy."
"I know, Thals. What is your point? Also, okay. In the case that I am tired, you are there. So are Zoe and Annabeth here. Between the three of you, and adding Phoebe to the mix, my absence won't make a huge difference. You would've fought them if I wasn't here anyway, right?"
"Percy's correct," Annabeth said. "And just for your information, I suggested to Lady Artemis to contact you seconds before you showed up."
"Ah, a knight in shining armor, ain't I?" I asked dramatically, striking a pose as my Armor appeared on my body, shining in the light of the tube lights in the tent.
"Zoe, do me a favor. Slap him." Artemis said, her lips quirking into a smile.
"With pleasure," Zoe said before swinging her hand to slap me on the back of my head. I just ducked under her hand, making her stumble.
"Jeez, I was joking. No need to get violent." I stated before ducking under yet another slap from Zoe.
That effectively lightened the mood a bit.
"Alright, back to work," Artemis said, spreading another map on the table. "This is the rough map of the camp… my camp. I know we still need to decide if we engage them or wait for them. But this might be required."
"Why not engage the first two or three and wait for the rest to attack?" Annabeth asked. "It would give us some rest in between. And we will have a home-ground advantage for the big ones."
"That is an excellent idea. Take out the first three. Wait for the fourth."
"But if we do that, we need to have the camp prepared. We can't leave it defenseless." Zoe said.
"True. I have a plan. I need three of your best archers with Thalia and Zoe. We go to the first monster group… the one nearest to us. I open the attack with shockwave and a few bombs before charging with Artemis to engage monsters in close range. The rest will provide cover fire. If needed, we signal Thalia and Zoe to join us in the close-range attack… which I don't think will be needed but still. Meanwhile, the huntresses prepare the camp and stuff."
"Sounds like a plan," Thalia nodded.
"Wait wait. We can't go just like that! This is only a very basic, half-assed outline of the plan!" Sophia exclaimed.
"Well, no. It was a decent plan without a lot of details. Percy just wings it half the time anyway." Annabeth said.
"Don't we all?" Thalia asked rhetorically.
"But are you sure that seven people would be enough even with Lady Artemis? No offense but we have three more targets after this. Also, shouldn't you take a backup or something?"
"The rest five, including Zoe and I are the backup, Sophia… Even if I am ninety percent sure that the rest five of us won't even be needed. Percy would handle them and add Lady Artemis to the mix, and it would be a cakewalk for them. The rest of us are just for show."
"That is not true. I need someone to give cover fire, take out strays and make our work easier." I said.
"I have seen you collapse a whole fucking museum on the General with one shockwave and kill the Nemean lion with one strike barely a minute after. Not to mention the other feats you did on Othrys including killing a titan. Don't tell me you cannot take on an Army of a few measly monsters without our help."
"Fighting an Army is different from one-on-one fights with monsters and Titans," I replied.
"Didn't you lay waste to an Army not even two months ago under the sea after killing two sea deities and just before calling the Titaness of the sea and defeating her?" Artemis asked.
"Yes, I did. Fair enough. Yes, you all are just for show. Happy?"
"Not really, but I got the satisfaction to shut you up," Thalia said with mock snootiness.
"If you both are done, I will say that we go ahead with the plan," Artemis said dryly. "Percy, Thalia, Zoe and I would go with three other huntresses… namely Agnes, Elena, and Evie. Zoe, go and call Elena and Evie please and tell them to get ready. We will set off soon."
"As you wish, Artemis," Zoe said, before running out of the tent.
"Annabeth, Phoebe, and Sophia. You three are in charge of making sure that the camp is protected and ready for the assault by the monster army. After eliminating the first group, we will come back here and collect the rest of the hunt before moving to eliminate the second and third before returning and await the last group to attack us. When they do, we eliminate them."
"Excellent," I clapped my hands. "I will get some essentials. Artemis, Annabeth, Sophia, please come with me. Anyone else who wants to can come as well."
"Where?"
I tossed the tent card on the floor a little distance away and it expanded into my tent, being erected in seconds.
"Hey, don't erect a tent here," Artemis protested.
"Too late. Come on now. We are running out of time."
ARTEMIS POV
Have you ever had the feeling that you are incredibly lucky despite the horrendous situation you are in? Well, I just felt it when Percy showed up at the camp a day earlier than I had anticipated. To be fair, we didn't have a fixed schedule but it was mostly a week's gap between his visits.
But, it was still a massive relief for me when he showed up.
You see, despite being a goddess, I was feeling incredibly nervous and scared when I got the news that four huge monster groups had gathered around my camp. I was scared not for myself but for my hunters. They were my family. And today, I was incredibly scared of losing quite a few members due to the situation we had found ourselves in unless we fled.
Considering the total number of monsters, I and my girls were outnumbered at least thirty to one, if not more. If we had engaged, there would undoubtedly have been a few casualties among my ranks. My hunters might be immortal but they could still fall in battle. Three months ago, I had nearly lost Zoe, my best friend, and lieutenant. It was only due to Percy that she was alive.
Speaking of which, I wondered how many times I would be indebted to him by the end of the war. It was so unlike me to be reliant on someone, especially a boy. But, Percy had proved to be my savior quite a few times already, despite him not even acknowledging it. The same thing was going to happen today.
His arrival was nothing short of a gift from fate for me. A powerhouse and an incredible, god-level warrior being with me, tipped the scales in this situation to my side. I knew he could easily take on an army. From what I had heard, whilst he was in Atlantis, an attack had taken place on one of the borders and the soldiers there had called for backup. Percy had responded alone, rushing to their aid. He had gone there and killed two sea deities, before casually banging his trident and tearing apart hundreds of monsters in the blink of an eye with ice spikes.
Rumour (Read: Poseidon's boasting) was that he was already being worshiped as a god in Atlantis for his casual display of power.
Of course, the worship wouldn't make him a god till he had ichor running in his veins, but it was a testament to his power.
His presence was undoubtedly going to save a lot of my girls' lives today.
I followed him into his tent as he asked me to. I had no idea why we were going in but I followed him anyway.
Pushing the flap out of the way, I was greeted by a nice, well-lit drawing-room, furnished with sofas, a coffee table, Television, and a cabinet bookshelf in one corner filled with several books. The room was tidy. Not overly so, but not as messily as I had expected.
"Welcome to my humble abode. I will give you all a tour later. For now, come." Percy said before leading us to one of the walls. He pushed aside a picture of him with whom I guessed to be his mother, revealing a number pad. As he punched in a code, my eyes were drawn to the painting.
The painting was taken at a beach. The lady was holding a little Percy, who must have been six or seven years of age at that time. His green eyes were sparkling as he grinned toothily at the camera. I noticed that a couple of his teeth were missing. His baby fat was still there, unlike his current chiseled and muscular body. He looked adorable.
"You were a cute kid Kelp head," Thalia said, voicing my thoughts.
"I will have you know that I am still cute," Percy replied as he pressed enter on the number pad, making the display glow green. A moment later, the wall next to the painting slid open. Percy entered before switching on the lights in the room.
Thalia, Annabeth, Sophia, Phoebe, and I followed him in. I stopped short at the sight I saw, making Annabeth run into me.
We had entered a massive, drool-worthy armory. One for which, Ares would probably give away his right hand. To be honest, the sheer number of weapons in the room was staggering. In one half of the room were ancient weapons. Swords, spears, tridents, bows, arrows, Warhammers, Axes, daggers, harpoons, staves, clubs, whips, baseball bats, shields… one just needed to name it.
In the other half of the room were modern weapons. Pistols, Revolvers, shotguns, sniper rifles, Assault rifles, Machine guns, missile launchers, Taser guns, grenade launchers, crossbows, hand grenades, smoke bombs, stun grenades along with a few other things I didn't recognize were on display. There were metal cases arranged on the floor all around the room. There were likely more weapons in there, similar to the ones on display.
"Alright, girls," Percy called, making all of our attention snap towards him. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Phoebe hastily wipe her mouth. "This is my favorite room in the tent. All crazy weapons in here as you can see."
"Where did you get all of these?" I asked.
"I got quite a few from Lotus Hotel and Casino. It had a nice big room full of all these beauties and I ransacked it. Some, I got from the variety of monsters I defeated especially when I was on the Princess Andromeda… the titan ship. The rest were courtesy of the Hephaestus cabin, especially Beckendorf. Oh, a few are from Tyson as well." Percy replied, picking up a box from the floor.
"These are Grenades. I trust you know how to use these, Annabeth?"
"Yes," Annabeth said, rolling her eyes. "You taught me to use it, remember?"
"Wait, you mean to say that Percy taught you to use a Grenade and he didn't teach me a thing!? JACKSON!"
"Calm down, thunder bug. I taught her on our second quest. It is easy. You pull the pin and throw it where you want it to explode. Simple. Oh, and don't hold it in your hand for more than three seconds. This variety explodes five seconds after pulling the pin. If you don't throw it, then you can guess what will happen."
"Of course," Thalia said, nodding vigorously.
"Good. Now, this box has a total of twenty grenades. Take these Annabeth. Also, pick up a sniper rifle if you are going to be sniping today."
"Hey, can I—"
"No," Percy interrupted Thalia, making her pout. "But you can get a Handgun."
Thalia's face lit up like a bulb as Percy picked up a nearby pistol and tossed it at her.
"Twelve bullets. All celestial Bronze. The Recommended range is fifteen meters for this gun."
"Thanks, Percy!" Thalia said, trying poses with the gun. "How do I look?"
"Like a clown impersonating a kid who sees a lot of spy movies."
"Hey!" Thalia shouted indignantly at Percy's reply, making the rest of us laugh.
"Now, is there something else any of you would like to take? Not you, Thalia."
"Hey, now you're bullying me! Stop it!" Thalia protested.
Percy gave her an unamused look. "Last time I gave you a gun, you nearly killed three people including me."
"It was an accident!"
"You still don't know how to shoot anyways. Why do you even need a gun?"
"Cause it is cool," She said in a matter of factly tone.
"These are weapons, Thalia," I interrupted coldly. "They are not because they make you look cool. They are to protect and to kill. Percy, take back the pistol you gave her. You are not giving her any guns till she is mature enough."
"But, Lady Artemis—"
"No arguments. Percy, take the gun back." I ordered.
Percy held out his hand and Thalia glared at him before thrusting the gun in his hands and storming out of the tent.
I shook my head. "I don't know how she can be so immature at times."
"She has a fascination with cool things which make her feel powerful. And as for maturity, she was twelve and jumped to sixteen by being imprisoned as a tree." Percy said, putting the gun back.
"You seem to have a fascination with weapons as well, seeing your collection," Sophia stated, picking up a lighter from a low-level shelf. She clicked it and yelped as the lighter turned into a beautiful Celestial bronze double-sided Axe.
"Woah," Phoebe said, going to Sophia and snatching the weapon out of her hands and admiring it.
"This is so cool, Percy. Can I have it?"
"Sure. But it has no return enchantment. So, do not lose it."
"Don't worry. I'll get Christine to do it. She knows how to." Phoebe said with a grin.
"Alright, weapons aside, what else do you need to prepare for the camp? I do not have mines or things like that. You can check out the arrows though. I have stun arrows, sonic arrows, blast arrows, fire arrows—"
"Thank you for your generosity, Perseus. But we have arrows. Everyone, get going. Phoebe, be a dear and carry the grenades out. And tell the others to ready the other defenses. I want to talk to Percy." I told my girls and they obeyed.
"You don't want a sniper rifle, Annabeth?" Percy asked as she was leaving the tent. She shook her head before leaving Percy and me alone in the tent.
"Artemis, do you want to take something for yourself?" Percy asked as he loaded a machine gun and put it in the pocket of his bag before picking up a multi-grenade rocket launcher and doing the same.
"Percy… I thank you for your generosity but please refrain from doing it in the future," I said and Percy looked sharply at me. "I mean, I appreciate the gesture, but these are your weapons. The hunt has its own weaponry and is self-sufficient. I can order weapons as and when I want it…"
"I didn't mean to offend you in any way…"
"No, I am not offended… it is just… you are doing so much for me and I feel that I am doing nothing in return for you."
"You don't need to, Artemis. You are already training me and teaching me so many new things."
"Am I?" I asked. "Am I actually teaching you stuff? As far as I realize, I just give you a couple of pointers to improve yourself. You already know most of it. I just give you a couple of pointers and my job's done. I am doing nothing for you and yet you are doing so much for me and my hunt. Today, you already showed up as a blessing in disguise to help us. And now you opened this awesome armory for us to take anything we want!"
"Artemis… It is nothing. Most of what is here has been stolen in a sense. I have just collected and stored them. I have my own repertoire of weapons. I am never going to touch most of this stuff. What is the point in hoarding it if I am not going to use them?" Percy asked. "And it is a perilous situation. If we don't use the weapons now then when would we?"
"That is not the point… Perseus. It is just that I feel too indebted to you…" I said, wringing my hands.
Percy walked forward towards me. "If you wish for me to acknowledge the debt, I ask for your friendship in return if that is acceptable. And I will consider this debt paid."
"Percy…"
He just raised his eyebrows in response.
I sighed and muttered, "I thought we were already friends."
"Oh, we are. Just making it official." Percy said with his signature roguish lopsided grin.
I narrowed my eyes in response.
"You know… how many men could say that they are friends with not only several huntresses but the goddess of the hunt, Artemis herself? I ought to go down in history for that." He said, his damnable grin widening. "Percy Jackson, the male befriender of man-hating girls does have a solid ring to it."
Despite myself, a chuckle escaped from my mouth before turning into full-blown laughter. Trust Percy Jackson to come up with the weirdest of things. Go down in History for befriending me. To be fair, a man befriending the world's biggest man-hater and her man-hating huntresses as far as mythology was concerned, it was a feat. A feat that still paled in comparison to what all he had done.
"You have it then. You have my friendship."
He grinned and came forward. For a moment I thought he was going to hug me but he just extended his hand. I returned a smile and shook it.
"The beginning of a beautiful friendship," Percy said.
"Good. Now, in the spirit of it, let us kick some monster ass!"
AND... DONE!

Guest: Well, thank you. The references for the arrows were not only from Mahabharata but also from the Hawkeye series of MCU and some of my own.
Callum Runchman: I am not gonna do the romance arc so quickly and abruptly. I want to try and make it proper instead of quick and abrupt. They will kiss but it will take time. ;)
