A/N: I was blown away from the response that my one chapter story drew, so I decided to make it a full story. Since the plot bunnies are running this show, I have no idea when a chapter will be produced. Those PB's (plot bunnies) are not very straightforward. So again, patience is the key word here. So as a little gift for the 4th of July, here's a little bang to get the fireworks started! Enjoy!
Chapter 2
He was late! I almost got up to leave but being the resourceful lady that I am, I decided I had to have something to eat and I ordered a grilled salmon on a bed of lettuce adorned with lemon slices. I was almost done with my meal when the room began to stir with murmurs. I see the problem, my lunch date has arrived. As he walks toward me the murmurs get louder and louder. What is it about this man that gets people all hot and bothered?
"Miss Steele, may I?" He asked as he motioned to the chair across from me. I nod and he sits with the grace of a male ballet dancer. "I do apologize for being late."
"No need." I casually wipe the edge of my mouth and place the napkin over my empty plate. "I have finished my meal and I am about to leave." My eyes never leave his face and I watch as anger flashed in his eyes for a mere moment. This man was not accustomed to people, and I felt, to women dismissing him as casually as I have done. "Don't try that domination shit with me, Grey! It won't work. I told you not to be late and you kept me waiting for over an hour."
"I do apologize, Ms. Steele. I was not able to get away, business." He tried to offer a forgivable excuse but I know better. From his attitude to his arrogant sly half-smile, I know he was trying to rattle me and see how far he could push me.
"Mr. Grey, I do hope that you enjoy your meal." I reach into my blazer and pull out my wallet. I don't carry a purse due to my former job. "Have a good day." I walk away from the egotistical billionaire and make my way to the cashier to pay my tab. I can feel his eyes on me and I wonder how long before he gets up and tries to lure me back to the table. As I pay for my meal, I sense him behind me. I know it is him, because the cashier is blushing and smiling timidly over my shoulder. I roll my eyes thinking that this young girl is a fool!
"Ms. Steele's meal is on the house, Daphne." He says.
I turn to face him. "I've already paid."
Christian took a deep breath. "I do apologize, Ms. Steele for being late. I should have called the restaurant and left you a message." His large hand went over his heart and I heard the girl behind me sigh quite heavily. "Will you forgive me?"
"Fine, forgiven, now good day, Mr. Grey." I leave him once again doing that fish-mouth thing that he seems to do about me quite frequently. I am waiting for the elevator when once again, Mr. Grey is beside me.
"Alright, I was being an asshole making you wait." He finally said.
"I know." I stare ahead at the elevator doors.
"Can we step back and start over?"
I slightly turn to him. He is pathetic in giving an apologies. "Mr. Grey, you can't afford me … morally that is." I see him begin to reply but I stop him. "You seem to think that the people that work for you are beholden to you. You own them, their souls and minds. Sorry, bucko, but no one owns me." I step back to the elevator and ring for it once again. "I will have to refuse your offer of employment since you have shown your complete disregard for me."
The elevator doors open to reveal a few people who are disembarking. I move to the side to let them pass and hear a few of them address Grey. Once I get in the elevator, I press the close door button hoping that I could have the elevator to myself. The fates have it in for me today! He slips through the closing doors. I step away from him.
"I won't bite."
Yeah, right, I think to myself. I've read about BDSM. "Mr. Grey, we have nothing else to say to each other, except goodbye."
We are slowly descending not stopping on any other floors. "Ms. Steele, we have a great deal to say to each other. Some business and some personal issues. You have made it known that I have a daughter."
"You do not have a daughter anymore. I have legally adopted Trista and my name is on her birth certificate, not yours."
"She is still mine." His voice is irritating me. He is such an arrogant prick! "And, I take care of mine."
"Back off, Grey." I growl. "Be very careful what you say to me in regards to my daughter."
"Our daughter." He offers. He pushes his hands down into his pants pockets. "Rory never told me she was pregnant."
"How could she? Your contract was very clear, once the contracted time was up, she was not allowed to speak about it to anyone or have any contact with you what so ever. How could she tell you that she was pregnant?" He only nodded and looked down at the floor as if I was a harsh schoolmarm and he was a naughty little boy sitting in the corner with a dunce hat on his head. "Mr. Grey, Trista will be taken care of and very well protected. I got this. You have nothing to worry about. No one will ever find out that you fathered my sister's child."
He finally looked at me. "I still want to offer the Head of Security job to you."
I shake my head. "I won't be able to take it. It would not be prudent to do so."
"Why?" He asks making me once again question his intelligence.
"I just finished an investigation on Child Sex Trafficking and because I found and destroyed evidence connected to you, makes it impossible to work for you. It would not be right."
"Ms. Steele, what if I hired you as a consultant? To help overhaul my security department?"
I don't want to work for him. I feel that I would become one of his "yes" men. "Mr. Grey, I can't work for you exclusively, but I do have a solution." I see that I have his complete attention. "You will hire Steele Securities Experts to revamp and take over your security issues for your businesses. Your personal security is not included."
"Steele Securities Experts? I've never heard of them." He said scratching his head.
"SSE just came into being, Mr. Grey. I am Steele Securities Experts." Once again I have the man speechless by starting my own company in the elevator leaving his restaurant. "I will call your people and set up an appointment for later in the week."
The elevator finally comes to a stop. I step out into the underground parking lot with Grey behind me. "You started a business…just like that?"
"Yes, of course. Don't worry, Grey, by the time I meet with you later in the week, I will be incorporated and fully licensed. I will probably have a staff also." He walks with me to my car and opens the door after I unlocked it. "Thank you, Mr. Grey."
"Ms. Steele, I have no idea what in hell has happened, but I look forward to meeting with you at your convenience."
I slide behind the wheel of my car and smile. I do love keeping him and people like him off kilter. "Good Day, Mr. Grey." He shuts my door gently and I slowly back out of my parking spot. As I drive away, I burst into laughter knowing that I have totally head-fucked the great Christian Grey! It was a good day!
It was over a week before I called GEH and asked for an appointment with Mr. Grey, and then it was another three days before our scheduled meeting which worked great for me. The idea of a Security Company had been a dream of Ray's. When I informed him what I had planned for my future, he was on board with support and a very sizeable investment. Together, Ray and I moved mountains for licenses, articles of incorporation, and we even found a non-descript building large enough for our needs. Our policy is to provide security but with a view on discretion. Most of our work would be cyber-security, but we also have personal security training available. Within days of opening of the personal security training facility, we were fully booked. Jose Rodriquez Real Estate became our first official customer with cyber-security set up through our secure servers and on his property. We even secured his building with state of the art motion detectors, automated locks that used a code to unlock, security cameras so small that they could not be seen and we even used "night-vision" cameras to scan the outside and inside of the building during the night. Our trial runs were very successful and I was more than happy with the results.
The big day arrives and I am early for the meeting with Mr. Grey. I take the time to eye scan the building and see that little had been done to better the building's security. Cameras were too spread out and the brand that was being used did not give the coverage per square foot that was needed. I signed in and was given a visitor's badge and directed to Grey's office. Instead of taking the public elevator, I took Grey's private elevator. When the elevator doors opened on the 30th floor, I was met by Grey's PO, Jason Taylor. He nods at me and silently leads me to Grey's office. I am not announced but led directly into Grey's office.
"Ms. Steele, a pleasure." The Christian Grey said as he raised from his chair, buttoned his suitcoat and stepped toward me with offered hand. "You are right on time."
"Thank you for noticing." I reply with a smile as we shake hands.
"That will be all, Taylor." Grey tells the PO.
"Jason Taylor, former Army Ranger, divorced, one child, presently living in the employee's living quarters of Escala's Penthouse. Republican, 2nd Amendment supporter, member of the NRA, and currently in a relationship with Gale Jones." I give Taylor a nod. "Highly decorated Army Ranger, if my memory serves me correctly."
"Yes, Ma'm." Taylor's voice is deep and I have to say, very sexy. I also know that he is 42 years old and served twenty years as an Army Ranger. I am so glad that Dad kept in touch with his Army buddies and could get information that no other could get. "Have we met before?"
"No, Sir, but my Father has deep connections within the Army since he is a former Ranger himself. I don't think you served with him, but he may have trained you at Fort Bennington."
"Major Raymond "I'll kick your ass!" Steele is your father?"
"Yes, sir." I smile at the man who I can tell has a great deal of respect for my Dad. Taylor just earned big time points with me! "I've always heard him referred to as "Steel balled Steele"" I laughed as Taylor nodded in agreement. "Or SBS" Taylor's face breaks out into a big smile.
"Give the Major my best." Taylor replied then took his leave.
I turn back to Grey who is lost for words. "What?"
"You got Taylor to smile. He never smiles."
I shrugged my shoulders. "Maybe it's the people that he is around. You don't look like the joke telling type … that would be more like your brother, Elliot Grey."
"You've been checking up on my family."
"Of course." I sit down in the chair that just a week and half ago he was sitting in. "Your meeting, sir." I await for him to convince me that I should take him on as a client. "How do you think that GEH will benefit by having my company take over your business security?"
I have thrown him for a loop. He is still standing behind his desk and I begin to do a mental countdown to how long it takes him to go into his goldfish imitation … five … four … lips are quivering … three … two … lips are perched… and we have lift off! Fish face has been instituted! He then turns away from me and swipes his hand through those rusty colored waves. After a few seconds he turned back to me and I am still waiting for his answer.
"I thought you were here to convince me to hire your company. You should be telling me why and how GEH will benefit from an association with you."
I open my new briefcase which is a dark red leather. I pull out our expert-designed brochure that catalogues our services and with user testimonials of our already signed clients. "As you will read, we are a state of the art, highly trained, and discrete provider for cyber security. We do have a very elite customer list that, of course, I cannot release, however there are recommendations from businesses that were more than happy to sing our praises." I push the brochure towards him. "I have fifty employees with a plan to add fifty more in the next few months. All employees are vetted with experience of the highest caliber. Most are former Military Intelligence officers. They are the absolute best!" He is still standing behind his desk and holding the brochure that I gave him. He looks to be in absolute shock. "Is there a problem, Mr. Grey?"
"You have a customer list? Fifty employees? And licensed all in a week and a half?"
"Yes, I am quite resourceful." I explain in a matter of fact way. "I also would like to point out that we do personal security training at our facility including weapons training and practicing. I am very proud to announce that our training program is at full capacity!" I once again go to my briefcase and this time I produce a short report that was made from my casual inspection on his building. "These are some recommendations that I have taken the liberty to call to your attention. These are the major "holes" in your security as I could see from casually observing your security officers, the placement of cameras, types of cameras, and the lack of any scanning devices to detect firearms or explosives. I haven't seen the mailroom, but I doubt if you have scanning devices or ex-rays for packages." I watch him as he sits down in his chair. "I would also advise that all security be retrained whether they are in civilian clothes or uniformed. I also suggest that all receptionists be given some training in dealing with a difficult and/or demanding persons. Such protocol is beneficial for the security of the staff and it also beneficial if your company is taken to court over an incident and it can be shown that Grey Employees went by the book. Keeps your legal suits very happy."
"You did all this from the few times you had access to my building without me knowing about it?"
"Yes." I say with a small smile. "I also added my thoughts about your security at Escala. I understand that most of the building's security is handled by the Escala management, however there are procedures and products that your staff can implement to keep your apartment very secure."
The room is silent as Grey looks over the brochure for the umpteenth time. His eyes then settle on me. "Ms. Steele, when can you start overhauling the security for GEH?"
"I can start today." I stand and offer my hand to him over his desk. He takes my hand and we both give a firm shake and hold on a little bit longer than what is socially accepted. I notice that his eyes have gone a shade deeper and he is breathing heavier. I want to tell him that he doesn't need to be nervous about hiring my firm, but then I realize that Mr. Grey is aroused. "I would like to meet with Barney Sullivan today and pick his brain a bit."
"That can be arranged." Grey said with a nod. "Will any of your team be joining us today?"
"No, not today. At a later date, I will have a few of my people integrate into different divisions and observe protocol. We won't be any trouble and people will hardly notice us."
"I am looking forward to working with you, Ms. Steele." He stands and buttons his suit jacket before escorting me to the door.
"Wait until you get my bill." I laugh. He returns the laughter as he opens the door and motions me to go first. I feel his hand at the small of my back as he guides me toward his private elevator. I don't say anything until we are in the privacy of the elevator where I remove his hand from my body. "Mr. Grey, do not touch me." He steps back from me and for a slight moment his face registers the shock then he goes cold.
"I do apologize. Habit of escorting my Mother."
"I'm not your mother and that is one way to get a sexual harassment suit thrown at you. No physical contact with any sex except a handshake. Business manners at all times. Also, you are never to be alone with a female in a room, the elevator or even a hallway. It opens you up to a sexual harassment suit or blackmail. I suggest you hire another Jason Taylor, so you have an escort at all times." As the elevator descends I notice that he has his hands clasped behind his back. He acts like a little boy who got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. "I will also have a sit down with Taylor and discuss protocol."
"You take this very seriously." Christian looks over me as if he just realized this momentous fact.
"Of course, I do. This is my business, my livelihood, the way I am going to pay for my child's college education." He is still staring at me. Then, I understand. What a fucking jerk! "Mr. Grey, this is not a rouse to find a way to get close to you. If you don't believe that I have a fully licensed, fully bonded, and fully staffed business why are you hiring me? I don't need you, Grey or your business. So before we sign on the dotted line, think very carefully if you want my assistance." The elevator door opened and I step out into the white and gray monolithic lobby that is the ground floor of the Grey Building. People are scurrying around doing their jobs. I turn back to Grey. "If you are still interested, send the papers to my legal team at SSE. I will be in touch."
