The Invitation, In the Name of God, Breaking Bread, Netherlands, Walk with You
The moon was bright in its glory, shining brightness down upon three figures sitting atop a sturdy tree. Their aura and appearance hidden to the humans, the trio could gaze freely upon the festivities below them.
"Oh look Tess! Look at the wee ones!" Monica bounced with excitement.
The older angel groaned. "Miss Wings, if you don't stop shaking this tree, one of us is going to take a tumble, and it ain't going to be me!"
The redhead blushed with contritement and murmured a soft apology.
The only man of the group merely gave her a cheeky grin above the grumbling woman's head.
"Do you think it's funny, Tess," the Angel of Death started, trying to distract her ire, "that the humans dress up like us for Halloween?" Andrew nodded towards a little girl in a white dress, plastic wings protruding out of her back, and a lopsided glittery halo made out of pipe cleaners. The child made her way enthusiastically to the next lit house.
"I find it even funnier that they took what was originally a harvest festival and made it into a candy free-for-all," she chuckled.
The group watched as the girl was joined by a boy, probably her brother.
He was dressed all in black, with a red cape, horns and holding a wicked trident.
"If only the Devil would look like that. He would be so easily avoided," Monica whispered.
"Amen to that, baby." Tess sighed.
They had encountered him a few times in their efforts to guide humans to the light. Always in the form of handsome men, the vain creature that he was. A politician in a small town, a lowly mechanic terrorizing a baker.
Andrew could see, with his gift of foresight, his beloved companion enraptured by the devil's form in a dark haired singing man, luring her with the voice of an angel she so coveted. It pained his heart so, but he knew she would rise over the temptation, stronger than ever, with each trial she endured. It would culminate in her final ordeal - battling a smug prosecutor over an innocent man's soul, but oh, what gifts she would receive! He could imagine her, blazing like the sun with her victory, beside Tess' (no, her) red convertible. He would greet the supervisor with open arms and a warm embrace.
All in due time though. Right now he would just enjoy their presence together in the spooky night.
I scrambled to write and was intending to post it on Halloween week, but I completely forgot. I wrote this before I saw the introduction to Season 7's The Invitation. In the Name of God and Breaking Bread were awesome in how they depicted how scary and charismatic the devil could be. Good job on picking Dan Schneider and (spoilers!) the actor who played the mechanic. Michael Chiklis was interesting because he usually plays tough guys. Mandy Patinkin sings like an angel. It's amazing. I still haven't seen the series finale, but it's on my list of things to do.
