So okay, there were some situations for which you couldn't have a plan; like facing actual time travel, or meeting your future children at the age of twelve. Annabeth accepted that. But honestly, she was a daughter of Athena, blessed with the gift of wisdom, not a prophecy wonder who could have predicted something like that.

Even so, of all the unexpected and unreal things Annabeth experienced at that meeting, nothing was as surprising, nothing as unbelievable, as Luke's reaction. Annabeth sat there in awe as the unthinkable happened. Luke stormed out of his seat as if possessed, and quickly ran over the ping-pong table towards the other end, towards Chiron. Ready to attack.

Most of the other counselors were too stunned to do anything about it. They remained in their places, not knowing what to do, or what was going on even.

"Luke! What are you doing?!" Annabeth shouted once she found her voice. She was the first out of her chair as she tried to follow him over the table.

If the young man heard Annabeth, he didn't let it show. Luke continued his way through awestruck campers. Then, he drew his sword.

"You stupid boy!" Luke yelled.

Luke wasn't going to attack Chiron. He was going after Rio. Annabeth's son.

The realization hit Annabeth like a wave. Without thinking about it, she grabbed her knife. She couldn't believe she was getting ready to use it against Luke, of all people. But he had to get him out of this crazy rush, whatever it was. Nothing existed for Annabeth at that moment except for the unhinged Luke preparing to use his sword and the terrified look on Rio's eyes.

It was clear Annabeth wasn't going to make it in time, she was too far away. Those few seconds seemed to extend for an unbearably long time. As Annabeth's heart raced in her chest, she thought she heard Sophia's cries somewhere at her back. Gods, she wasn't going to make it.

Fortunately, someone tackled Luke out of the table just in the nick of time. That someone was Charles Beckendorf.

"What's the matter with you!" the dark-skinned boy yelled. Both of them hit the floor as the table was turned over.

The brief relief Annabeth had felt then was short-lived. No matter how strong the Hephaestus son was, Charles was unarmed and in seconds he was thrown against the wall. Annabeth couldn't see much of what happened next but there was a lot of blood involved. So much blood.

"LUKE!" Annabeth was shocked. She couldn't believe her eyes, the Luke she knew wouldn't attack a fellow camper like that. He was the sword instructor, the honorable, the reliable.

Incredulity struggled with the images before Annabeth's eyes. Luke, the person she had most trusted in these past years, stood tall and was preparing to finish off Charles Beckendorf, who was lying unconscious on the floor. This was a nightmare, Annabeth was sure of that.

Luke raised his sword.

"ARGH!" Luke yelled in pain as an arrow appeared on his shoulder.

Chiron was out of his wheelchair, his bow in hand. Luke turned to face his mentor, enraged. Annabeth got a glimpse of the loath he was putting in his glare to the centaur.

She didn't know how all of it was possible. Still, despite not wanting to hurt Luke, Annabeth knew the son of Hermes had to be stopped. So she prepared herself.

Luke was outnumbered and it didn't matter the others were unarmed, Chiron had his arrows and Annabeth had her knife. Also, Luke couldn't wield his sword comfortably in a space as reduced as the council room. In spite of it, Luke ran towards Chiron, taking advantage the centaur had still to load another arrow.

Everything happened as in a blur and Annabeth missed most of the following events. Everybody was trying to stop Luke, from Silena to Lee. Annabeth couldn't go through, she wasn't even able to see clearly either. It was all pure madness.

Then Annabeth listened to a couple of yells and saw Luke storming out towards the exit, someone had broken his nose.

It was truly a narrow space for a fight, Annabeth even tripped over someone in the turmoil without knowing who it was. She got up immediately and tried to follow Luke.

The young man was slashing at as many of the unarmed counselors as he could on his way out. Julie appeared in front of him, the Demeter counselor was trying to make a vine grow out of a nearby pot, but there was no time for that. If it hadn't been for Lauren tackling her to the floor at the last moment, Luke's sword would have found her easily. Annabeth gritted her teeth.

He's not himself, the blond girl tried to convince herself, not for the first time.

Castor fell quickly, Lee resisted a bit more using a chair but he was soon defeated. Even Clarisse was no match for Luke without her spear.

When Annabeth jumped out of the broken table she saw Luke almost at the exit. Sophia, Annabeth noticed, was the only person between him and the door. Annabeth froze. She had left Sophia all by herself in the rush to get to Luke. For a moment she had completely forgotten the little girl even existed.

"No! Please!" Annabeth ran after him but she wasn't going to make it. No one else was there to help Sophia.

Luke had his sword ready.

"NO!"

Sophia closed her eyes with a loud cry.

"Leave her alone!" another voice came from behind Annabeth.

SPLASH!

Suddenly an explosion was heard and out of nowhere a stream of water came out, throwing Luke the remaining distance out of the house. Luke crashed against a window on his way out.

"Stay away from her!" Rio yelled as he moved toward his sister.

Annabeth was stunned. What in the gods' name had just happened?

Once she got to where Sophia was, Annabeth noticed the water had stopped, a nearby sink looking like a mess. Outside, Luke was lying a few yards away from the Big House, grunting and utterly wet.

"Sophie, Sophie, are you alright?" Rio hurried, kneeling in front of her.

The little girl nodded to her brother, the water had missed her, as her hair wasn't wet. She seemed to have no injuries that Annabeth could see.

"How did you do that?" Annabeth asked, moving her eyes between Rio and Sophia. It wasn't clear what had just happened or who had done it but it surely had been one of them.

"Dad," was all Rio said, he was looking at his sister curiously.

"Sorry," said the little girl, containing the tears. "I was scared. I didn't mean to."

"It's okay," said Annabeth, giving her a quick hug.

Lauren reached them soon enough. The girl's dark hair was a mess, but she seemed mostly unscathed. Her deep gray eyes showed surprise though, she had seen what happened with the kids too. However, before she could say a word, loud coughing was heard. They all turned their eyes out of the house.

Luke was shaken and completely soaked, yet he began to rise from the ground. His body was bruised, his nose broken and the glass from the window had given him several cuts. Still, he wasn't defeated yet.

Annabeth noticed him and walked outside of the Big House, shielding the kids inside. Her knife was ready, just in case.

"Luke! Listen to me! You need to snap out of this! You're not yourself."

Luke seemed doubtful for a moment, almost confused. He didn't seem to realize who was talking to him for a moment, but when he picked up his sword he sent an evil smirk in Annabeth's direction.

"A—Are… are you really, sure? A—Annabeth," he sounded exhausted, his hair was sopping wet. Luke cleaned the blood from his nose with the back of his arm, then he noticed Annabeth gripping the handle of her knife very tightly. "You're not going to attack me, right? Not with that k—knife. Are you?"

"Annabeth…" Lauren tried with a tone of urgency.

Annabeth was frozen in her place though. She didn't know what to say. Luke felt completely different from the kind boy who had found her in that alley all those years ago. She couldn't avoid the memories.

"We are family," she remembered the words. "I promise."

"I..." Annabeth was speechless, the grip on her knife loosening.

"Are you stupid?! Didn't you see him?!" Clarisse yelled, taking Annabeth out of the trance.

The daughter of Ares was hurt, there was a blood-stained cloth around her arm. That didn't stop her. She pushed Annabeth out of the way and stormed towards Luke, a sharp chair leg as her only weapon.

As far as weapons went, Clarisse's improvised spear had no way of beating Luke's sword. However, Luke was tired and beaten up. Also, it wouldn't take long for reinforcements to arrive.

Annabeth stood there in shock as Luke threw a last hard look at her before running away, Clarisse chasing him close by.

"We'll meet again! Those stupid kids... They'll pay for this! All of you will!" Luke shouted furiously as he ran in Thalia's tree direction.

Lee came out of the house limping, yet he didn't think twice before following Clarisse.

It took Annabeth a couple of seconds to realize she needed to go. Even so, she just couldn't convince her feet to move. Some whimpers got to her and she snapped back to reality. There were cries coming from the Big House. Annabeth remembered Luke's mad expression from moments before. She remembered the image of Charles slamming against the wall, awfully wounded.

She couldn't think of that at the moment. There would be time to find out what happened to Charles and rest. Later. Once Luke was caught.

Annabeth gritted her teeth and turned to the door, which was still wide opened. The kids were there, scared.

"I'll look out for them. You have the weapon, go!" Lauren shouted.

Annabeth nodded, then ran after Lee without knowing what was going to happen next.

The sun was starting to set on camp, the yellow light was making way to a few warm tones of orange. In another situation, it would have been a peaceful sight to witness. Nothing was calm though. Nothing was okay. The whole world seemed to be falling to pieces and Annabeth's heart was beating wildly against her chest.

The faster Annabeth went, the more she doubted she wanted to get there. What was she even going to do if she caught up with Luke? Attack him? That just didn't feel right. And yet, he had no trouble attacking them. Who knew if Beckendorf was even alive. What about Grover though? Or Castor? Were they injured as well?

Annabeth closed her eyes and tried to put the images away from her head.

Clarisse and Lee were only a few yards ahead of them, running as fast as they could, even unarmed and wounded. Luke was farther out, even from the distance he looked exhausted. His stride was troubled and his escape was far from certain. It did seem like Clarisse and Lee were going to reach him before he managed to reach Thalia's tree.

The thought made Annabeth remember her old friend, the friend she had shared with Luke. Thalia's tree was going to witness Luke's escape. Did the tree have memory? Would the leaves know what was happening? What would Thalia say in Annabeth's place? What would she do?

Annabeth's heart didn't slow down. She wasn't sure if Clarisse would stop to ask questions or just attack Luke in rage. Maybe Luke still had the strength to take her and Lee down. There was just no easy outcome of this.

Why did you do it, Luke?

The blond girl frowned and tried to run even faster. She still couldn't believe what Luke did to Charles back at the Big House, her eyes were watering and she knew that.

Unable to accept what she had seen so far, Annabeth wondered if Luke was under someone's control. It was crazy, but it seemed somehow crazier that the Luke she knew had suddenly decided to go against everything he cared about. The kids hadn't said anything about Luke being controled either.

Mom said he just made the wrong choices, Rio's words echoed in Annabeth's thoughts. Was that true? Or was her older self just sugar-coating things for her children? Had Luke attacked them like this in their timeline as well?

"TRAITOR! TRAITOR AT THE CAMP!" Annabeth heard Clarisse shouting. Confused yells were heard far behind them.

The daughter of Athena knew she was getting emotional at the wrong moment. She felt a lump on her throat, yet she couldn't afford the tears now.

Focus, she repeated to herself.

As Annabeth got closer to where they were, she saw Luke turning to Clarisse and Lee. The young man shouted something that didn't reach Annabeth's ears. Then a large shadow appeared out of nowhere, Clarisse and Lee were barely able to dodge it. The shadow was a hellhound.

Annabeth froze. As wrong as it felt, Luke had just summoned a monster right into the camp.

The black beast charged against the unarmed demigods, all they could do was try not to get killed. Annabeth saw a couple of close calls with Lee before she got to where they were.

"Well, about time!" Clarisse shouted at her. Annabeth tried to ignore the remarks.

The situation was difficult. The hellhound was big and fast, its paws looked pretty deadly too. The only proper weapon they had was Annabeth's knife, and it was going to be very hard to defend all three of them with it. Annabeth had to do something quickly.

She looked at the other halfbloods. Clarisse's arm was bleeding but she had a cloth pressing on her wound and she didn't seem to care about it at the moment. She still had that broken chair's leg in her hand. Lee was limping, it was incredible he was able to keep running up to that point, he looked drained of energies now. A bow on his hands would have meant the world at that moment. Annabeth didn't know how long they could keep dodging the hellhound.

The monster turned to Lee and Annabeth took the chance to throw herself at it, raising her bronze knife. The hellhound noticed her at the wrong time and threw her to the ground. Annabeth got a few scratches on her from the encounter but otherwise, she was in one piece.

"Annabeth! Watch out!" Lee shouted.

On the ground, Annabeth was shaking her head, but at Lee's voice, she turned up at once. The hellhound was charging at her now. Her eyes opened wide and she moved her head around, looking for her knife. She found it a few feet away from her but, unfortunately, she had to jump aside to avoid the hellhound's assault. The knife was left on the ground.

The monster only had eyes for her now. Annabeth's ADHD triggered. She made her best attempt at trying to stay out of the hellhound's reach but she was still unable to get to her weapon.

A long distance away from where they were, in Athena's cabin, there was a New York Yankees cap belonging to Annabeth. That cap was a gift from Athena and it had the magical ability to turn everyone who wore it invisible. The blond girl could really use it right now.

Annabeth snorted, that cap was of no use to anyone where it was now.

Suddenly, a heavy rock smashed the hellhound on the head. Annabeth was surprised by it at first but soon found Clarisse. The older girl was already picking a new rock from the ground.

"What are you waiting for? Go for it!" The daughter of Ares yelled.

Annabeth understood right away and nodded. She ran back to where her knife was. By the time she got to it, the huge black dog was already shaking its head, recovering from the hit.

Then, a long growl came.

Annabeth turned to her left at once, towards Halfblood Hill. Luke was gone. He had escaped and that made Annabeth feel like she had already failed. However, that wasn't the most urgent thing since two more of those hellhounds were running down the hill toward them.

"You gotta be kidding me!" shouted Lee.

Luke had summoned not one but three huge hellhounds and he had done it knowing pretty well they might not be able to stop them. Right under Thalia's watchful tree. He was trying to kill them. Kill her. Luke.

Annabeth shook her head, trying not to think of that now. She didn't have the time.

What were they going to do now? One monster was more than enough in their current condition, but three? Annabeth didn't know if they would be able to make it out of this alive.

She had to though. Annabeth still needed an explanation of what was going on. She needed a quest now more than ever. Annabeth needed the opportunity to go out there and find Luke.

The blond girl frowned and got in a defense position. Her thoughts were racing wildly while her gray eyes moved back and forth between the two new monsters and the one that was already approaching Clarisse and Lee.

Think Annabeth, think.

A few ideas rushed through her mind then, each one as crazy as the previous one. There was just no way of her defeating them like that. Not all three. In an open field. Clarisse and Lee would be helpful, if there was only one hellhound. So that was it. She had to take the other two away from them. To some trap, or to reinforcements.

"Hey! Hey there!" she yelled at the monsters shaking her hands, getting their attention. She even threw some rocks their way.

"Annabeth, what are you—" Lee started.

Annabeth didn't give him a chance to finish, because she sprinted away then. She ran faster than she thought she was able to, the two big dogs behind her. Almost as if rolling downhill. Annabeth had to trust the others on this one, she couldn't deal with all three hellhounds now. They would find a way to deal with the other, even unarmed.

"You think you're going to win this? Come here you stupid dog!" Annabeth heard Clarisse's voice in the distance.

With more hardship than she had foreseen, Annabeth reached the volleyball courts, where only a handful of campers were left. They were all caught by surprise though. After all, it wasn't common to see two black dogs the size of bulls running your way when your head is focused on getting a match point.

"Hellhounds!"

"But, how!?"

The yells came from everywhere.

Since a volleyball game didn't precisely require weapons, some of the campers had to rush to the benches where they had surely left theirs. In the meantime, a blond girl from Aphrodite threw a ball directly to one of the hellhounds faces, dazing it briefly. Another camper and a fat satyr followed the girl's lead and stormed the monster with volleyballs. There was a bigger one which appeared to be basketball as well.

Annabeth guided the other hellhound to a court, jumping at the last moment to let it get tangled in the net. Unfortunately, Annabeth's foot got caught in the net too and she stumbled to the floor.

"Annabeth! Get out of there!" a voice echoed.

It required some effort not to roll her eyes. Of course, she needed to get out of there. She was perfectly aware of the hellhound running behind her, contrary to the impression she might give.

The net was torn to pieces, and the hellhound was free of coming after her.

Twice she pulled from her foot without success, Annabeth felt hopeless. She was sitting on the ground, waving her bronze knife in the air and crawling backwards, barely keeping the attacks of the hellhound at bay.

Then, just when Annabeth thought one of the heavy paws was going to get to her, it didn't. The hellhound was too tangled in the volleyball net and the net couldn't stretch anymore.

Annabeth saw the opening. She quickly took her chance before the monster could break the net. She rushed forward and sank her knife all the way to the hilt inside the beast's chest. A long cry echoed across the courts and then the monster was turned to dust.

An unexpected silence reached her ears briefly. Annabeth remained seated, breathing heavily. Her head was as tangled as the net, her ponytail undone. After a few seconds, she heard another cry, some of the campers who had been playing had their weapons now and they had just killed the other hellhound.

"Annabeth, what happened?" asked a redhead boy from the Demeter cabin, he had half a backpack on him as the other part seemed to have been bitten away.

Annabeth freed her foot from the net and stood up, "Later! Follow me! Clarisse, Lee…"

By the time they reached the hill, there was no hellhound left to kill and the sun was almost gone. Three demigods were standing there with Lee and Clarisse, one of them was helping Lee to his feet, another was reinforcing Clarisse's bandage. There were a few arrows on the grass.

The fight had just finished.

"So what happened at the Big House?" asked the third demigod there. It was Jake Mason, a boy from Hephaestus' cabin. The campers that came from the volleyball courts were curious too, they didn't know what was going on either.

"You were there?" Annabeth asked Jake.

"We were at the Armory with some kids from the Apollo cabin when Julie Sandoval came looking for them. They needed urgent medical assistance at the Big House. She told us it was better if we came here to help instead."

The boy who was with Lee and the girl who helped with Clarisse's bandage nodded as well.

"What happened?"

The blond girl's expression turned darker, "Luke, he—he was not himself! He—"

"Not himself?! Thought Athena brats weren't supposed to be stupid!" shouted Clarisse standing up. "He attacked everyone! He's a traitor!"

Gasps were heard, a few eyebrows were raised.

"Luke? It can't be!" said one of the Aphrodite's girls who had come from the courts. Murmurs echoed in support of the surprise.

Lee lowered his head. It was certainly a shock to the audience there. Of all the campers, Luke was the one people look up to the most.

Clarisse huffed, she was fuming, "It is true. Beckendorf and Castor can tell you that! That traitor used his sword against them, even when they were unarmed! He was the one who summoned the hellhounds!" she announced. "He just escaped and all thanks to someone who didn't have the guts to do anything about it!"

Frozen in her place, Annabeth noticed that all eyes were now on her. There was truth to Clarisse's words, even though it pained Annabeth to admit it. Maybe if she had tried to fight Luke at once he wouldn't have escaped.

"Way to go, Miss Princess. Next time we have a traitor in camp, we'll call you so you can speak to him while he gets away!" Clarisse said, then left the group, not before putting the last nail on Annabeth. "Athena's cabin should stop playing with little kids and pick a real counselor." she blurted out.

All the campers were left staring at Annabeth, who didn't have a comeback for those words.
