Hello, another story from me and back (after a very long break) to come back to this wonderful fandom with a new story.

So yeah this is massively AU. I don't really have a lot of background notes in the works in terms of the timing for this story, I am going to put it about seven to eight years before the first season, also I am not an adoption/medical expert nor an expert on teenage parents in another state so I don't know how accurate this is going to be.

I know I have made Mamma Reagan the enemy in this story, I am choosing to make her the villain of this story because A. we needed one and B. She's not really a character I ever write so it was easy. I am also choosing to write that her reaction to Jamie and the pregnancy on the same day she got the diagnosis for her cancer. Again this is AU so if she is a bit OCC...believe me she pays the price later on. Hopefully this story begins to make more sense as we get into it.

I don't know when I will be able to update, it used to be weekly but that was before I got a job so...I will try and update when I can. I predict this little story will be seventeen (ish) chapters.

Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine.

Please Read and Review and let me know what you think when you get a chance!

AU for Trigger Warnings for Cancer, underage pregnancy, medical issues and a lot of swearing-I swear a lot in my stories so if that is something that you struggle with them please keep that in mind.

And yes...Eddie makes an appearance at some point...I just don't know when.

Spelling and Grammar are never my strongest points and so please keep that in mind as you read.

There's A Place Where Lost Things Go

Chapter 3-No Options

Linda makes a phone call, Danny finally get's some peace of mind. Joe comes along for the ride too.

There was a phone buzzing by his ear somewhere in the big bed but Danny ignored it for a second. He was about eighty percent sure it was his father and twenty percent sure it was his grandfather and both had the same thing in mind. Erin he knew was not going to ring him about family dinner because the last time Danny had yelled at her but he did know his sister and he knew her well so ringing his father and telling him was not out of the realm of possibility.

He paused sighing. He was just not in the mood.

His mother as dead she was buried in the ground it was over. He had done his bit, he had gone and said goodbye to the woman, gone to the funeral and had kept his comments about Jamie to a bare minimum which considering Joe's response had been impressive. Both of the Reagan brothers had wanted to stay for the service and that only it had only been Erin's tearful plea that had gotten Joe to concede to the wake and Danny had gone A. because he didn't want to leave Joe alone and B. because of the free food.

He couldn't help it. He honestly really couldn't help it. He was beyond incensed. He was beyond it. Beyond the anger that had made him want to shake the woman until her teeth rattled. He was beyond the anger that had gripped him the despair that had shook him. It was now bone deep exhaustion and it wasn't fair.

It didn't matter how many times his father his own face drawn with grief and terror told him that his mother had regretted it the second the words had been uttered. It didn't matter that his mother had cried over it time and time again. It didn't matter this his father had searched New York in the past weeks with a dark desire. It didn't matter that his mother's last wish had been to make it right. It didn't matter that the night she had thrown Jamie out like he was trash she had found out not only that it was cancer but that it was probably terminal.

What mattered to him was that Jamie was gone.

And when he said gone he meant it.

Jamie had slipped from the house never to be seen again. Danny had looked, his Dad had looked, Joe had looked. They had camped out at the girlfriends house when her Mom and Dad had returned and all they had gotten out of it was that Jamie had been in Florida but he had ran away. Nothing about the baby, nothing about Jamie and as Florida PD had explained there was not much that could be done. Hell Danny wasn't sure that he was even in Florida.

His phone buzzed again and he sighed. He knew it was going to be about family dinner. It was the first one since the funeral and his Dad wanted them all there. Danny had barely managed to make it past the funeral without spitting, it had been a combination of the loss of his Momma and the rage at her part in the loss of his brother and he had been unable to put the two to the side for the day as Joe and Erin had both done.

Now he had no excuse for avoiding the house and he knew that this whole carry on as normal doing family dinner bollocks was important to his grandfather and his Dad and to be honest despite what Linda said he wasn't sure if he could do it.

Already he could feel the wave of his temper crest.

But the phone kept fucking ringing.

"Yeah?"

"Danny"

He relaxed the smile coming to his face and his thoughts clearing despite how dark they had been a moment ago.

"Linda"

"Hey sug"

"Hey babe"

Linda didn't ask him how he was doing, she was not a stupid woman she knew how he was doing at the tone of his voice and he loved her for it. He never had to pretend with Linda, she just got it. She just got him.

"Hey. Listen I need you to get to St Vic's for me. And not to call your Dad"

"You okay?"

"Danny are you sitting down?"

Yeah cause that was the way to approach a situation wasn't it?

"Linda" he said reaching across the bed to where he kept his spare gun. "I am seconds away from loading my glock and coming after you so I don't know if maybe you want to change your approach a little here but—"

"Jamie"

He stopped dead.

She spoke into the silence.

"He's here. I am pretty…well I know it's Jamie, he's here, with the baby, he's at St Vic's the baby's sick, Danny you need to get down here now"

For a moment he couldn't get his brain to work let alone his voice and then…

"Jamie? Are you sure?"

"Danny you have a photo of him in your wallet, yes I am sure. It's him, he's…he's in a bad way—"

"What happened?"

"I don't…he has his baby like you suspected but my guess is they've been living rough for a long time. He's exhausted, his son has the measles—probably because without documents he couldn't get him vaccinated and…he needs you here, I think…if you and Joe were to turn up I think he would be okay with seeing you but I…I gotta say Danny if you ring your Dad—"

"Ha!"

"Danny"

"Linda I am not letting Dad near him, Dad let this whole fucking thing happen"

Linda sighed. It was pointless Danny knew for her to tell him that his father had not had a clue what he was walking into that night. That he had looked for his son and still was looking for his son, that his fury had been virtually unmatched by any of them but it had been sidelined by the fact that his wife of twenty five years was dying of cancer. It had been a hard thing for his father to reconcile with, losing one son because of his wife and his wife dying of cancer. It had not mattered to him that his mother had been filled with regrets—it had mattered to his father and maybe that was the problem. If it had been Linda in this position maybe his view on the world would have been different.

But it wasn't.

And so Danny could afford to be a dick about the whole thing.

But Jamie was here and that was enough for him.

That was always going to be enough.

"What room?"

She gave him the number and he reached for his jeans.

"On my way"

Joe had just come out the shower. God he loved weight days at the gym. There was a damn fine looking gym instructor named Holly there and he always thought it best to keep working just to impress and now you were seeing real results. Coupled with the fact it all coincided with him getting to work on time (with his new shiny gold shield) and he was in a good a place right now as one could be.

You know when one's mother was dead, brother lost to the wind and other brother refusing to speak to their father about it.

Joe was somewhere on the middle fence. He could speak to his father, had gone to the funeral, had cried real tears to be fair and then had gone and gotten drunk because he couldn't stand the idea of going to a wake where everyone thought Jamie had been the runaway and didn't know that he had been forced out of the damn house.

Also he didn't want to leave Linda alone with Danny when he was in that kind of mood. His brother might want to cut of his right hand than to hurt Linda but Joe had needed the air anyway.

His phone rang.

"Lo?"

"Joe"

"Danny…look the old man hasn't managed to grab me today about dinner—"

"It's Jamie"

Joe stopped and then he slipped into Detective mode instantly.

"Oh?"

"Linda…she's working at the free clinic up on 173rd Street and she found him"

Joe nearly dropped his phone. He caught it just in time.

"Fuck" he said quietly. "Are you telling me that the kid's been in New York the entire time?"

"No he was somewhere else but he's back…probably heard about the funeral but…he has a kid…"

"We knew that—"

"And he's up at St Vic's. Linda says the baby is sick and he looks like hell"

Joe swore. He wished he'd not knocked smoking on the head. Man his kingdom for a cigarette now.

"You told Dad?"

There was a long pause. Joe nodded. Figured.

"Are you going to tell Dad?"

"Linda thinks if we do that he's going to bolt. Look I'm on my way over there right now will you meet me?"

"He wants to see us?"

"That's what Linda sold him on and I believe her. He was always better with you and I was away when the shit went down, maybe he figures he'll get an easy chance—"

"He doesn't need one, Christ Danny if the kid had just come to me I would have stopped this! Hell he could have stayed with me in my shitty run down apartment back then I would have smuggled him into the Academy, I mean…anything to avoid the last year and a half I mean…" he shook his head blinking back tears. He couldn't help it. He had always prided himself on being close to Jamie and the one time where Jamie had needed him his little brother had not felt secure enough to pick up the phone.

"Hey" Danny spoke his voice oddly gentle. "Hey don't do that to yourself Joe. We know he's alive now…God knows that's something compared to where we were six months ago when the last sight of him was at the hospital. Fuck"

Joe sighed leaning back on his bed for a second before he pushed himself up off it.

"Okay" he said quietly. "Text me where you want to meet I am on my way. I need to call in sick though."

"Call in sick?"

"Either that or go AWOL"

Danny snorted but said nothing.

Joe hung up the phone suddenly feeling very old.

He was never going to have kids. Far…far too much emotional whiplash for one person to deal with.

He met Danny at the hospital his older brother thrumming with excitement. Joe wondered if he had considered ringing Erin but didn't ask. This could go one of two ways and while Joe loved his sister and Erin had been just as horrified as the rest of them when she had learnt what their mother had done, Erin had been the one who had insisted on a forgiveness nobody was willing to give. Jack at the very least had understood that and he had ran interference as much as he could but with Danny and Erin's tempers running along the same lines there was many a time where Joe had watched them go at it only to find Jack sat on the porch with a beer and a slightly shell shocked expression.

For a defence attorney Joe though Jack was okay. Joe had heard rumours about Sonny Melevskey. He had a fair appreciation of what some cops were capable off.

Linda was waiting for them.

"You both look like hell" was her greeting.

"Love you too babe, where is he?"

"Inside, listen to me" she said as they both crowded round the door.

"Listen to me both of you, Harrison"

"Who?"

"The baby Daniel, his name is Harrison, Harrison has a fever and the measles, Jamie is a wreck, the Doctors are concerned because he's sixteen with a sick kid living on the streets and at some point someone is going to connect the dots and call your father, so you had better get him on board with that idea and fast, he's quick and he's used to running so watch him and for God sake don't push him if he's not ready to be pushed…and wash your hands before you go near your nephew. Measles spreads"

And with that she knocked on the door and slid in putting up one finger. Joe whistled under his breath the second the door shut closed behind her.

"Damn you lucked out there my friend"

"Oh I did" Danny said with a grin. "Oh I most certainly did"

The door opened and Linda stared at them both suspiciously for a second and then she opened the door.

Danny pushed past her. Joe rolled his eyes but followed.

He stopped dead.

The baby was in an incubator thing and while Joe was no medical expert he didn't think that, that amount of tubes in a child so small was a good thing.

Then he looked across the room.

At Jamie.

Fucking hell, Jamie.

Jamie was sat there in scrubs that were drowning him. His hair was a matted mess and he was resting his head on his arms. He looked up at them dully as they came in. Joe took in the dark circles under his eyes and the thinness in his face and then he let his eyes trail down the body.

Christ Jamie was thin, he was so, so thin he was so thin that you could bend him in two and snap him like a twig or a thin cracker. His hands were like pale spiders all the bones in his hand prominent, his cheekbones wide in his gaunt face. Joe didn't know how long it had been since Jamie had, had a decent hot meal but he was guessing it had been a long time.

Worse of all was the look of resignation in Jamie's eyes. The way his body curled up in itself as if he was waiting for the blow. Joe had to look away to get himself under control. Danny couldn't look away.

"Ah kid" Danny said very softly. "Oh Jamie"

Jamie's dull blue eyes filled with tears for a second and then he looked away.

"No" Danny said firmly. "No Jamie, no…come here…come here honest it's going to be alright I promise you"

Jamie turned to look at him and then his eyes flickered to Joe. Joe smiled trying to say everything in his face that his words could not.

Jamie leaned forwards for a second his hands shaking and Danny very slowly opened his arms.

"Come on kid. It's fine…it's all gonna be okay…were here now. It's all gonna be fine"

Jamie stared at them both for a second and then it happened before he could stop himself.

With a small cry he leapt off the small chair and ran into Danny's arms. The force of which he hit Danny made Danny the ex marine take a step backwards but his arms were around his brother so tight Joe couldn't get near even as Jamie sobbed brokenly into Danny's neck. Danny rubbed his back softly and just let him cry.

Joe blinking rapidly looked down at the baby to get himself under control. He didn't know what else to do in this moment. What else would help the terrible, no good situation that they were all thrown into.

He wiped his eyes wincing and turned to face his brother.

It was all that he could do.
