The sound of the little voices made the couple freeze. Both sets of eyes widen, shocked that they have been caught. They looked over at their daughters, who were both standing side by side in the bedroom doorway with quizzical expressions on their faces.
Meanwhile, Kelly and Stella are dying a thousand parental deaths as they frantically try to calculate just how big of an eyeful their daughters got.
Kelly sighed as he looked at his daughter, then Stella's daughter, then Stella. He was nervous to the core. This wasn't how he wanted them to find out; this could ruin any chance that they had of an actual relationship. Especially if Stella freaks out.
Stella's mouth fell open, and her eyes widened dramatically as she placed a hand on her chest. She looked at her daughter, then Kelly's daughter, then a glance at Kelly. Before she looked back at her daughter, who was staring at her with her eyebrows raised and a frown on her face, her eyes looked confused, sad, or maybe not sad. She noticed that look was her look of hope, the look she gives her when she is begging for something. But Stella wasn't sure exactly what that look meant. This wasn't how she expected to tell her; she had tonight's dinner all planned out in her head. Maybe not the exact words, but she had a little idea of what she wanted to say. But this was going to change the whole conversation now.
"Why are you in my dad's bed?" Madison asked, looking at Stella. Stella opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
"Oh, My God!" Jennifer said, turning into the bedroom. "I'm so sorry." Her eyes widen, looking at Stella and her son. "Girls, come on," she says trying to get them out of the room.
"Grandma, why is Stella in my dad's bed?" Madison asked again.
"We can't go. Kelly's going to eat my mama." Haley yelled in a panicked tone.
Jennifer looked down at her. "What?" she asked, clearly not understanding what she meant. She then looked back at an embarrassed Kelly and Stella. Then it dawned on her what Haley was talking about. "Umm... No, honey, he's not, I promise," she tells her holding in her laughter.
"He said so."
"He did, grandma, we heard him."
Jennifer tried to pull them, but they stood still. "Girls, I promise he's not going to..." She thought for a moment. "They're playing a game."
"A game?"
"What kind of game?"
"An adult game," Jennifer said she was hoping to get them out of the room. "Come on, get your dresses, Madison."
"What is an adult game?" Madison asked.
"Can we play adult games?" Haley asked.
"No, you have to be an adult." She said this as she pulled them out of the room. Shutting the door behind her.
Stella let out a loud sigh and covered her face with her hands. "That didn't just happen," she said, in a shocked and embarrassed tone.
Kelly rolled off of her and collapsed on the bed beside her. "Unfortunately, it did." They lay there for a moment in complete silence. Neither was sure what to say or what to do; neither had ever experienced anything like this. Neither knew what to say to their daughters either. This was a first for them. After a few moments of silence, Stella busted out laughing, and Kelly looked over at her like she had lost her damn mind. "What is so funny?"
She looked over at Kelly, still laughing. "The whole thing is just funny."
"We probably just traumatized our daughters, how is that funny." He asked, he couldn't help but smile when he looked at her, her laugh was contagious.
"I don't think it's that bad." She tells him, trying to make light of the situation.
" Really?" He was surprised, she wasn't the one overreacting. He thought she would freak out and hurry out the door with Haley.
" Kelly, it's not like they saw us naked; thankfully, we had the blanket on us. Yes, this cringe-inducing scenario is very regrettable. But your pillow was lying sideways; they didn't see me with my shirt off—at least I hope they didn't. The only thing they saw was you on top of me. But it may not be as bad as we think," she thought for a moment. " Which will be hard to explain, especially the you're going to eat me part. Good luck with that, by the way." She laughed as she tried to get out of bed.
"Oh no, sweetheart," Kelly said, grabbing her arm and bringing her back to bed. "You are not putting that on me," he said, tickling her. " We are going down together."
"Take one for the team, Kelly." She giggled in between squirming to avoid getting tickled.
"Not happening, sweetheart." He said this as he pinned her down. "We are talking to them together because we are a team. "
"How do you think they will react?" she asked as she caught her breath. She is so scared of their reaction to them wanting to be together. She likes Kelly and the way he makes her feel, but the girl's opinions will change everything.
Kelly tilted his head. "I'm not sure." He traced her face with his finger. "We will answer whatever questions they throw at us the best we can." He tells her, hoping that there aren't many questions and the girls are happy for them. He loves where he and Stella are at, and he's hoping to keep it that way.
Stella nods and says, "I hope they are okay with us, liking each other and being together."
"Me too baby."
"I like being in your world. "She tells him, as she wraps her arms around him and looks up at him.
"I like it too." He tells her, as he kisses her tenderly worried this might be his last time kissing her, if the conversation between the girls doesn't go well.
Downstairs, Jennifer was trying to distract the girls, the best she could. "We could make breakfast for your parents," she tells them, as she starts to make coffee.
"Why are they still up there?" Madison asked.
"Yeah, what are they doing?" Haley asked as she looked up at the ceiling.
Jennifer sighed. "Girls, they will be down soon, and then you can question them all you want," she tells them hoping to change the subject, but no such luck.
Haley's eyes widened. "I know what they are doing," Haley said excitedly.
"What?" Madison asked.
Jennifer stopped making coffee to listen to their conversation.
"They are wrestling," Haley said. With a big smile. " Like they do on Gray's Anatomy."
" Wrestling? Why would they wrestle?" Madison said with a confused look.
"That's what adults do in bed together," Haley said to her, Madison was still looking at her confusedly. "It means they were having sex," Haley said bluntly.
"Haley Marie!" Stella yelled as she walked into the kitchen. "Where did you hear that from?" Stella was beyond shock she has never talked to or allowed her to watch anything with sex in it.
"What is sex?" Madison asked, looking at Kelly.
Kelly furrowed his eyes. "Something you don't need to know about till you're thirty." He tells her, as he rubs the top of her head.
Stella crossed her arms, staring at Haley. "Haley Marie, I'm waiting, where did you hear that word?"
"That's what Dylan said they do on Grey's Anatomy."
"When did you watch that?" Stella was beyond confused.
"With Aunt Jessica, and when they got in bed together, Aunt Jessica said they were wrestling, adult wrestling. But Dylan told me it's not adult wrestling; it's called sex."
Stella was speechless, and she wanted to kill Jessica. " Haley Marie you and I will have a private conversation about that word and that show, later tonight. "
"Yes, Mama," Haley said, sadly.
"Okay, I'm going to fix everyone's breakfast, and you four could go talk in the living room," Jennifer said as she closed the fridge.
Kelly sighed. "Girls, go into the living room; we will be in shortly."
"Why Daddy?"
"Because you, me, Haley, and Stella need to have a little talk."
"Are we in trouble?" Madison asked.
"No, sweetheart, no one is in trouble," Stella said as she bent down in front of the two girls. "Your daddy and I just want to talk to you two about something, really important."
"Oh, okay?" Haley said as she grabbed Madison's hand. "Can we watch TV?
"Yeah, till we get in there," Kelly tells her.
"I need coffee before this conversation," Stella said as she walked over to the counter.
Jennifer watched as Stella poured herself and Kelly a cup of coffee. She then handed a cup to Kelly. Who thanks her and grabs her hand. "What?" Kelly asks as he notices her watching them.
"So, was that a one-time thing? Do you have something to tell me? " Jennifer asked as she started to whisk the eggs.
Stella looked at Kelly, who looked at her. "No, it wasn't a one-time thing, and actually, we are a couple now," Stella tells her with a huge grin.
Jennifer smiled. "That's fantastic."
"Yes, it is," Kelly said as he kissed Stella's cheek.
"Hopefully the girls are happy about it," Stella said as she sat down at the table. She feels nervous now. She couldn't believe how afraid she was to talk to her daughter. What if she isn't happy about them dating or she doesn't like Kelly? Would she have to end the best thing that's happened to her in years, actually the best thing that has ever happened to her ever—except having Haley?
Jennifer put the bowl down and walked over to Stella and Kelly. "When it comes to telling your daughters about you two being together, I can tell you now. They are going to be over the moon excited. Trust me."
Stella arched her eyebrows and looked at Kelly, who was also looking at his mom's confusion written on his face. " Really? How do you know?"
Jennifer laughed. "Well, the girls and I have been having conversations about you two getting together for a while now."
"You have?"
"Yes, Gabby and I had a plan to use the girls to push you guys together. But it looks like you two didn't need a plan; you guys figured it out on your own."
Stella was stunned. "I figured Gabby was involved somehow." She laughed.
"So, the girls are going to be okay with us being a couple?" Kelly asked his mom.
"Yes, I believe they will, so don't stress yourself out over that. Now explaining what you two were doing upstairs will be a whole new ballpark." Stella frowned as Kelly rubbed the back of his neck. "Why didn't you lock the door?"
"It was just us last night, and I didn't think you would bring them home at eight in the morning," Kelly tells her, giving her, you could have warned me to look.
"Well, that only happened because I told the girls last night some exciting news. And Madison wanted to come get all her dresses so she could try them on. " Jennifer said.
"What exciting news?" Kelly asked.
Jennifer looked a little nervous. "I'm getting married, and I want the girls to be in the wedding."
"That's awesome; congrats," Stella said as she jumped up and hugged her.
"Thank you; the girls are so excited. Madison wants to pick out the dresses. " She looked at Kelly, who was staring at her. "I'm hoping my son does me the honor of giving me away."
Kelly took a deep breath. "Of course, anything you want, mom." He tells her this as he hugs her. Stella wasn't sure why, but she got the feeling he wasn't happy about this marriage.
"You mean it?" Jennifer asked, in a hopeful tone.
" Yes, I do. Congratulations, when is the big day?" He asked as he gives Stella a look that tells her he will fill her in later.
"Next month."
" Wow!"
"I know it seems rushed, but we've been dating for a while. And we both don't want a long engagement. We want to get married as soon as possible."
Kelly glanced at Stella. "I understand; I'm truly happy for you, Mom." He told her this as he hugged her again.
"We should go talk to the girls," Stella said. She could tell Kelly something was bothering him about his mom's news. She's not sure why, though.
"Yes, do that," Jennifer said as she walked back to the counter. "And if you want my advice, Put yourself in your child's shoes. Remember how differently and simply a child perceives any situation."
"Maybe we should wait to tell them about us?" Kelly suggested he was getting cold feet.
"No, I want them to know. We already have to have an awkward conversation with them, so why not tell them now?"
"Why are you in such a hurry?"
"Because I want to be able to do this," she said, as she leans up, pressing her lips to his, Kelly deepening the kiss. "Anytime, Anywhere, I want," she finished after they broke the kiss.
He smiled down at her and said, "That is one hell of a good reason." He laughed; He kissed her again. Their lips are so perfect for each other. It's like completeness and happiness are all at your fingertips. He kisses her slowly and softly and gently slips his tongue into her mouth. Their kiss increased...
"Go talk to your daughters and quit making out in the kitchen," Jennifer said as she threw an apple at Kelly's back. The couple laughed, and Kelly grabbed Stella's hand and walked into the living room. Both girls lay on the couch, watching cartoons.
"Hey girls, let's talk," Kelly said as he turned the TV off.
"Okay, Daddy."
"Why are you holding my Mama's hand?"
Stella looked at Kelly, who gave her a reassuring smile. "We have a reason for that," Kelly said as he and Stella sat down in front of them.
"Girls look, hmm... " Kelly started but wasn't sure how to start. As both girls stared at him.
"Haley, do you like Kelly?" Stella asked, realizing Kelly was stuck on what to say.
"Yes, I do," Haley said, looking at Kelly.
"Madison, do you like me?"
" Yes!" she said excitedly.
Stella smiled. "I like your dad too, very much," Stella tells Madison
"And I like your mom a lot," Kelly tells Haley
"Then why were you going to eat her?" Haley questioned.
Kelly's face went red with embarrassment, and Stella had to bite her lip to keep from laughing out loud. All eyes were on Kelly, and he glared at Stella, knowing she was loving this moment.
"Yeah, Daddy, if you like Stella so much, why do you want to eat her?" Madison asked as she stared at her dad, waiting for his response.
Kelly thought for a moment. "You know how sometimes when we are having our nighttime cuddles and Daddy is reading you a story," Madison nods. "You know how I would tease you and say you look so cute I could eat you up like a cookie, and then I'd kiss your cheek."
Madison smiled big. "And you tickle me, till I almost pee my pants." She laughs.
" Yes!" Kelly said, smiling at her. "See, I like Stella so much and I think she is so cute that I told her I could eat her up." Kelly watched as both girls looked at each other like their eyes were talking.
Stella sat on the coffee table like she was on pins and needles, waiting for the girl's response to what Kelly had just told them. She sighed silently in relief when Madison said.
"Oh, that's why you want to eat her because you like her and you think she is cute as a bunny like you say to me."
"Yes!" Kelly said as he looked at Haley.
"So, you were joking with my mama."
"Yes, I would never hurt your mom."
"That makes sense," Haley said with a huge smile.
Madison smiled. "That's cool."
Stella and Kelly's eyes widened in surprise. This dreadful conversation was going better than expected. "But why were you in my daddy's bed?" Madison asked Stella.
Stella gave Kelly a help me look, and he just smiled at her like he was getting even with her for not helping him with the last question the girls asked. " Umm... " She started as she glared at Kelly. " Well..." she started as she thought about how to explain it.
"Mama, is Kelly your boyfriend?" Haley asked in her innocent voice looking at her mom. Stella's eyes widened.
"Her boyfriend?" Madison questions Haley. "Are you Stella's boyfriend, Daddy?" Kelly sighed; he hated being put in the spotlight.
"What do you know about boyfriends?" Stella asked her daughter.
"Mama, I have a boyfriend, duh."
"Come again? When did you get a boyfriend?" Stella asked Haley, who rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Last week."
"This is the first time I'm hearing about it. Haley, you are too young for a boyfriend." Stella tells her.
Haley crossed her arms over her chest. "That's not fair; Madison has seven."
"Like hell she does!" Kelly exclaimed. Stella elbowed him in the side for saying hell in front of the girls. "I mean, no, she doesn't."
"Yes, I do, Daddy; I have Mark, Jordan, John, Cody, Jackson, Shawn, and Nathan."
"You don't have anyone, Madison Nicole."
"What does obsessed mean?" Madison asked randomly.
Stella and Kelly exchange looks. "Hmm. how to explain it so a six-year-old can understand?" Stella said, "Someone who can't stop thinking of someone or something. That someone or something is always on their mind."
"Why?" Kelly asked his curious daughter.
Madison smiled big. "There are so many boys obsessed with me at school." She said it with a nerdy laugh. That makes Stella laugh out loud.
"No, there isn't either," Kelly yelled. "I'm taking you to school tomorrow and having a little chat with your teacher and all those boys." Madison smacked her lips and started pouting. Stella was still laughing, and Haley was laughing because her mom was laughing. "Are you done yet?" Kelly asked her in an irritated tone.
Stella cleared her throat. "Yes, I promise."
Kelly stood up. "Look, girls, the bottom line is that I like Stella a lot, and she likes me a lot. So, we are...
"Boyfriend and Girlfriend," Haley said it was no big deal.
"Like our teacher and our gym teacher?" Madison asked.
"Your teacher and your gym teacher are boyfriend and girlfriend?" Stella asked confusedly. "I thought your teacher was married?"
"She is, but she has a boyfriend."
"What kind of school are we sending our girls to?" Kelly said, staring at Stella, who shrugged her shoulders. "We are having a meeting with their teacher," Kelly told Stella in an annoyed tone.
"Does this mean you guys are going to get married?" Haley said it in an exciting tone. "And have a baby?"
Both Kelly's and Stella's eyes widen. "No. we...
"Madison, we are going to be best sister friends." Haley says in her excited tone "And we are going to have a baby sister or baby brother... Hmm." She put her finger to her chin. "I want a baby sister... No, I want a baby brother." She thought about it for a moment. "No, I want a baby sister." Stella put her head in her hands. Kelly stared at Haley, who kept going on and on. "We can share a room, Madison. We can move in with you. We are going to live together."
Stella couldn't believe how happy and excited Haley was; she thought she was going to have to ease her into the subject. But she's taking the news better than she expected. "Can we get a puppy? Can I be at the wedding like I am for Madison's grandma? Can I call Madison's grandma grandma too? Madison you can call my mama your mama too."
"No!" Madison screamed. Causing everyone to look at her, even Jennifer, who walked into the room. "They are not getting married. Not having a baby. We are not going to share a room. This is my house, Haley, not yours. That's my grandma, not yours." She looked at Stella. "I don't want a new mom; I've got a mom." She said this before storming off upstairs.
Stella was completely heartbroken by Madison's outburst. Kelly looked at his mom, who looked just as shocked as he was.
"Why doesn't Madison want you to be her mom? You are a good mommy." Haley said as she hugged her mama.
"Thank you, baby," Stella said as she hugged her back and kissed her forehead. She looked up at Kelly, who was staring at the stairs. "Go talk to her."
Kelly looked over at Stella and then at his mom and said, "I thought you said they would be happy about us?" Kelly asks her, confused by Madison's reaction.
"I thought she would be Kelly. I'm as confused as you are." Jennifer said as she wondered what had made her granddaughter so upset.
"I'm happy about it," Haley chimed in, giving her biggest smile.
Stella smiled at her. "That makes me happy to hear." She said this as she kissed her daughter's cheek. Which it did; having Haley accept her new relationship meant the world to her, but now she was worried about Madison.
Kelly bent down, eye level with Haley. "It makes me happy too." He told her as he kissed her forehead.
" I'm okay if you want to be my daddy because I don't have a daddy," Haley said, in a disappointed tone. Stella's eyes filled with tears.
Kelly smiled, " It would be an honor to be your dad." he tells her, causing Stella to cry.
Haley smiled and hugged him. "Sorry, Madison is sad."
"Me too," Kelly said as he stood back up. "Me too."
"Madison and I have already planned your wedding."
"Baby, we're not getting married...
"It's going to be a unicorn wedding, pink and purple." Haley interrupted her mom.
" Unicorns?" Kelly said, giving Haley an amused look. "Wait. Madison talked about your mom and I getting married."
Haley nodded her head. "Yep, we talked with Jennifer."
Stella and Kelly looked over at Jennifer. "Yes, they were planning your guys' wedding last night while I was planning mine. That's why I said the girls were going to be happy about you two. I'm completely stunned by Madison's reaction."
"Baby, how about you go help Jennifer finish breakfast, and I'll be in in a minute?" Stella tells Haley
"Okay, mama."
Stella stands up and waits for Haley to leave the room. She wraps her arms around Kelly's neck. "Go talk to her; it's not making sense for her to be excited about us with Haley and your mom and then react the way she did. Something must be bothering her, and she probably wants some one-on-one time with her dad."
Kelly nods. "Your right "
" I usually am." She smirked. He smirks back at her before kissing her softly...
Stella walks into the kitchen and says, "So what can I do to help?" She asks Jennifer.
"Umm... You can make the toast."
"Okay." She replied as she went to the cupboard and got the bread out.
"So can I call you grandma?" Haley asked as she finished setting the table.
"Haley Marie!" Stella said in a stern tone. "Baby, you heard Madison; she doesn't want you to call her grandma. You need to respect Madison's feelings."
Haley frowned. "I just wanted a grandma; I never had a grandma before."
Her words stopped both Stella and Jennifer from doing what they were doing. "Baby..." Stella said regretfully.
Jennifer walked over to her. "I would be honored to be your grandma."
" Really?" Haley said it excitedly. Stella watched the two, her heart melting at the conversation.
"Yes, starting today until forever, I will be your grandma, I will spoil you, and love you just as much as I do Madison."
Haley jumped into her arms. "Mama, I finally have a grandma."
"I see," Stella said as she gave Jennifer an awestruck look. She was beyond happy for Haley but worried about how Madison would take it.
Kelly took a deep breath before entering his daughter's bedroom. His heart broke at the sight of her lying on her bed, crying. He shut the door and walked over to her bed. "Baby girl, why are you crying?" He asked as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
She looked up at him. "Stella is not my mom, Daddy; I already have a mom."
Kelly closed his eyes. "Stella is not trying to be your mom or take the place of your mom."
"She's not?"
"Stella knows you have a mom, and she respects that."
Madison sat up. "My mom is coming back one day, right, Daddy? You said so."
Kelly stroked her hair. "I did say that, and I hope that I'm right. I pray every night that she will come back to see how beautiful her baby girl is."
"But she has a new baby now," Madison said in a disappointed tone.
Kelly's eyebrow is arched. "Who told you that?"
" Grandpa, he called last night and we talked for a while."
"Of course, he did," Kelly replied, silently cussing his father out. He shakes his head. "Grandpa had no right to say anything to you in the first place, baby girl; that was my place to tell you."
"You know, Daddy?"
"Yeah, I know Grandpa told Grandma, and she told me." He lifts her chin and says, "Just because she has another baby doesn't mean she doesn't love you."
"But you said she left because she didn't know how to be a mom; now she knows how."
"I did tell you that because that's what she told me. It's been almost seven years since she left us, and maybe she did learn how to be a mom."
"So, she's coming back now."
Kelly sighed. "Sweetheart, I honestly don't know, I haven't talked to or heard from your mom since she left. I wish she did; I want you to have a relationship with her; you deserve to have a mom."
Madison gave him a sad smile. "Daddy, I like Stella, and I like Haley."
"Me too, baby."
"My mom is married to someone else."
"I know."
"Are you going to marry Stella?"
"Not anytime soon; I like her a lot, and maybe one day in the future if Stella and you and Haley are okay with it. I would love to marry her if you're okay with it."
Madison thought for a moment. "Does she make you happy?"
"Yes, she does."
"She makes me happy too, Daddy." She says this as she gets up off the bed. "I'm hungry."
Kelly grabbed her hand. "Sweetheart, are you okay with Stella and me seeing each other?"
"Yes, I want you to marry her someday." Kelly hugs her. "But Daddy, I want to call my mom."
Kelly pulls back and looks at her. " What?"
"I want to talk to my mom; is that okay?" She asked, giving him her sad blue eyes.
"Yeah, it's okay." He tells her as she jumps up and down. "I will see if I can get her number."
Madison hugged him and kissed his cheek. "Thank you, Daddy." She ran to her door. "I've got to go tell Haley my mom is coming back." She yelled, running out of the room. Kelly sat on her bed, astounded by what had just happened.
Stella walked into the room a few minutes later. "Hey!" She says as she sits down beside him.
"I want to punch my dad in the face." He told her as she rubbed the back of his neck. "Why would he tell her? Her mom had a baby, and she is married. What right did he have?"
"He didn't have the right."
"She thinks her mom is coming back."
Stella nods. "I know she came running into the kitchen, jumping up and down in excitement, telling us you were calling her mom. And she's coming back for her." Kelly shook his head. "How do you feel about that?"
"I want Madison to have a relationship with her mom. I do." He trailed off.
"I know you do."
"She had six years to contact her Stella—six freaking years. My number is still the same, as is my mom's; she knows where we live." Stella kissed the side of his head. "She never even sent her damn birthday card." He cries.
"I know."
"Calling her will be a bad idea." He tells her. " If she cared she would have contacted her." Stella bit her lip as he vented. " She doesn't care, I know she doesn't."
" Can I say something?" Stella asked.
"What?" Kelly questioned.
"Hear me out; if I'm overstepping, just tell me and I'll stop, because I would never want to step on your toes. "
" Okay."
She wiped his tears away. "How about we invite her to Madison's birthday party?"
"Are you serious? Why would I do that?"
"Yes, I'm serious, and you should do it for Madison... Let's send her a message on her social media and see if she responds first and if she wants to talk to Madison. If she does, then we can let Madison call her."
"What if she doesn't?"
Stella sighed. "If she decides she doesn't want to talk to her daughter, you and I will handle it the best way we can, together."
"I don't know."
"The way I see it, we are giving her a chance to be part of Madison's life. It's up to her if she wants to be in it or not. She's crazy if she passes it up, but then again, Madison will know that her dad tried to get her mom to be a part of her life, and she will love you and respect you for it."
"I gave her six years to be part of her life." He tells her bitterly:
"I know, and she's a freaking moron for not taking it, but now your daughter wants to connect with her. You aren't doing this for Christina; you are doing this for Madison."
Kelly gave her a surreal look. "She's going to get hurt, Stella; I already know how this is going to end. My daughter's heart will be broken again, and I will have to pick up the pieces again. Every once in a while, she would ask me why her mom didn't want to see her yet, she would say Daddy I'm older now is my mom coming back now. She has cried herself to sleep countless times over that woman. " He paused. " It's been six months since she's asked me if she's coming home, I thought she had finally let it go. But I guess I was wrong."
Stella pulled him into a hug. " I promise, if she does get hurt, I will help you pick up the pieces," she tells him as he cries into her chest, she kissed the top of his head. As she rethinks her idea, she doesn't want to cause Madison any pain, but she also wants Madison to have a relationship with her mom, every little girl deserves that.
