Chapter 6
The week moved smoothly for all involved, Hermione was waiting for her appointment with Dr. Cullen. The appointment always fell at the end of the week. She considered dropping hints that she knew their secret; but decided against it. Bella was acting her usual self, only with Edward. Hermione smiled, everything is going to change, she thought to herself.
…
Bella had only been spending a few days in the proximity of Edward, but she knew she was falling hard for him. She thought about him every waking hour, she missed him when he was away. She craved his voice, and his touch. Had a hard time concentrating on her schoolwork, and she even dreamed about him at night. She was borderline obsessive, the way she needed his attention. She wondered if it made her a groupie.
Shaking off the thought, she attempted to work on her math homework. She silently rejoiced thinking about how Friday was only a few days away, which meant no homework. She even did a little happy dance in her seat at the thought.
Sometime later Bella emerged from her room to the smell of something wonderful.
"When did you learn to cook like this?" Bella heard Charlie asked.
"You know how Mom can be," Hermione said as she finished tossing a salad, "she insisted I learn. Something about old Swan traditions or something."
Charlie laughed, "Grandma used to say, 'A Lady Swan always runs a kitchen; however, men are useless even when taught excessively.'"
"I'm sure you're not that bad," Bella said joining in on the fun.
"Surely you can make a salad?" Hermione gestured to the counter.
"Not unless you want fingers in your food," he supplied with a grin.
"Uncle Charlie," Hermione said in surprise, "it's a wonder that you've survived this long. Not to worry though, Bella and I have you covered. Right Bells?"
"Right Mya," Bella said, before they high fived. Charlie's laughter filled the kitchen causing Hermione and Bella to join in.
…
Edward had been sitting in his car for a few moments after arriving home when slice knocked on the window.
"What are you doing?" she asked getting in on the passenger side.
"Thinking," he said looking out the window at the leafless trees.
"About?" she asked curiously.
"Bella," Edward said forlornly, "I thinking I'm falling for her."
"You've already fallen Edward," she replied sullen voice, using her hands to try and articulate the obscurity of the situation, "what are you going to do? Do you honestly think it will work between a vampire and a human?"
"She's like no human I've ever met," he admitted to her, "I can't read her mind Alice."
"Singer doesn't a soul mate make Edward," Alice said in a sing song voice, mimicking Hermione, "But for what it's worth I agree with you. So, what are you going to do?"
"Take it slow and see where it goes," Edward replied, but it sounded more like a question to Alice.
"Invite Bella over this weekend," she said shrugging her shoulders, "Hermione will tell us she knows by then."
"Do you think Rosalie can play nice long enough," Edward asked turning to look at Alice.
"I wouldn't count on it," Alice said lightly, before continuing "but if we invite Hermione along, Rosalie might be willing to play nice. It might put Bella more at ease also."
"Is that a good idea?" Edward asked wondering if Hermione could really keep Rosalie from going nuts on him and Bella.
"Why don't you ask Bella," Alice said," she might feel more at ease with her cousin around."
"Alright I'll ask her, if she wants Hermione to come," Edward said in agreement, Edward liked Hermione, she was a great friend, to Bella and to his sisters. Perhaps she would be a good friend to him as well. She seemed to be levelheaded and she could keep a secret.
As the two of them started to get out of the car, Edward turned to her and asked, "are you just don't want her around because Bella annoys you?"
"Bella doesn't annoy me..." Alice said sharply, before amending her thoughts, "Ok so she annoys me a little bit, but I'm willing to put up with her for you. Besides Hermione enjoys shopping, Bella doesn't have a lick of fashion sense."
Edward let out a throaty laugh, before stepping out of the car and closing the door.
"It wasn't that funny," Alice said in mock annoyance, which only caused Edward to laugh harder.
…
The very next day Edward did as Alice suggested, he invited Bella over for dinner that Saturday evening. Then he amended his invitation for Hermione as well if it made Bella feel more comfortable with the decision.
Bella agreed that she would feel more comfortable with Hermione there, and mentioned something about distracting Rosalie under her breath. This caused Edward to once again crack up with laughter.
Bella smiled, she liked it when Edward laughed, he was so handsome and god like; but when he smiled it took his out of world looks to a whole new level of hotness. This also cause Bella to be speechless for a few minutes.
"Who are we distracting?" Hermione asked as she came upon them in the hall.
"No one," Bella said trying not to laugh.
"Mm hmm," Hermione hummed and then replied in a sing song voice, "I don't believe you."
"I was just inviting you and Bella over to the house on Saturday for dinner," Edward said holding back a laugh.
"You want to introduce Bella to the family," Hermione said factually, "and you want to distract Rosalie."
"Basically," Edward said looking back and forth between Bella and Hermione, "Alice and I thought it might make Bella feel more relaxed about meeting the family."
"Sure," Hermione said with a smile, "it sounds like a good time."
"Thank you," Bella said to Hermione as Edward said his goodbyes to go to his car.
"Anything for you Bells," Hermione said shrugging her shoulders and smiling, "you know that."
Bella gave Hermione a big smile before they headed to Bella's truck to head home. When they got home there was someone waiting on the porch for them. Neither Bella nor Hermione recognized the person who was turned away from them.
"Hello," Hermione said cautiously, "can we help you?"
The person turned around, neither of the girls recognized him. "Yes, I'm looking for Charlie Swan."
"He won't be home for a few hours yet," Bella said cautiously, "can we pass on a message?"
"Do you have a number I can reach him at?" the man asked.
"You can reach him at the Police station," Bella said quickly.
"I passed the station on my way her," the man said thoughtfully, "I'll just stop in and see him. Thank you very much. You girls have a nice day."
"You too sir," Hermione said. The two of them stood to the side to let the man pass before watching him get into his car and drive away. After he was gone for a few minutes the girls hurried into the house and locked to door. They had no idea what the man wanted, but they were sure that they did not really want to be in a situation like that again.
…
Charlie was sitting at his desk going through files that he had already gone through the day before. Most of them just needed signed off on. Nothing big really, all in all the town was quite peaceful and that was the way that Charlie liked it.
Then there was a knock at the door, "Come in," he said. He was not expecting the person that walked in.
"What can I do for you?" Charlie asked silently directing him to have a seat.
"Hello, my name is Mr. Weasley," the man said in an English accent rivaling that of his nieces. Charlie watched as he sat in the chair, before replying.
"Yes, what can I do for you?" Charlie asked.
"We tried to contact you regarding Hermione over the past few days, but it seems we weren't able to get through. I'm here in the hopes to check up on her without causing any trouble."
"You knew Hermione well then?" Charlie asked curiously.
"Yes," Mr. Weasley said happy to talk about the girl, "She was quite close to my youngest two children, they were devastated when Hermione couldn't remember anyone. We are still trying to find a cure for the spell that was cast on her. We've no luck yet, but a few of the Spell Breakers, who have looking into it, they are sure that they are close to some sort of breakthrough. Of course, they have no way of knowing without trying the spells out. But the Minister of Magic is quite against it, he won't use her or anyone else as a guinea pig."
"Have you anyway to test it without testing it on a test subject?" Charlie asked concerned.
"We do, but the results could be different per person. We have no way of knowing if the results would be the same on Hermione or not. She seems to be happy, I stopped by the house first, I think I may have scared them a little by asking for you. The girl with Hermione handled the situation quite well. I am saddened that Hermione didn't seem to recognize me at all."
"I don't know what I would do if my daughter didn't recognize or remember me," Charlie said with understanding, "I hope Bella wasn't too short with you."
"She treated the situation with caution," Mr. Weasley said happily, waving it off as nothing, "I hope that my daughter would do the same."
The talk continued like this for a few minutes more, before Charlie directed Mr. Weasley towards Hermione's doctor, Dr. Cullen.
Kingly had already given the information on Dr. Cullen and the Cullen family to Mr. Weasley before he left to come and check in on Hermione. However, he knew that he was not to reveal the Cullen's background to Mr. Swan or his daughter or even to Hermione for that matter. Mr. Weasley knew she was a smart girl and that she had probably figured it out already, she was very smart after all.
…
"I wish I could give you some good news, Mr. Weasley," Carlisle said with concern, "but the truth is that she hasn't shown any sign of remembering anything yet. She hasn't had any of the warning signs, no headaches, weird dreams, she doesn't know things and not know how she knows them."
"We were hoping that there had been some progress," Mr. Weasley said sadly but perked up after pausing to compose himself, "we are however thankful for your looking after her. I know it must be hard to keep your secret around her."
"She knows, if that's what you're asking," Carlisle said with a smirk, "She just hasn't gotten around to revealing that she knows yet."
Mr. Weasley smiled at this; "She's always been one to figure out she had never been one to hold information back when she was in school. Though there was the time that she knew about Remus being a werewolf and not revealing the information until the end of the year. Remus had always joked after meetings that she was a sly one, and too smart for her own good.
"She's very special to us," Mr. Weasley said with a sigh, "I, well we hope that she regains her magic and her memories. She's such a talented witch."
Carlisle sat intrigued, by the story Mr. Weasley was weaving of this girl that he had been treating for the last few months. He hardly knew a thing about her, well the magical her. It seemed like they were two entirely different people, or sisters perhaps.
