Sunrise Sunset
~Previously, Hermione follows the dog to the meadow, Hermione's memories or magic seem to be outward projecting to try and help her remember. She takes up exchanging letters with Luna Lovegood, and she suggests meditation.
Chapter 18
It was the very first Saturday in August, it was muggy and warmer than usual for Forks, this time if year. Teenagers had been getting all their energy out by smashing mailboxes. Chief Swan sat behind his desk rubbing his temples, he was getting too old for this. There was a small tap at the door, which meant that his next meeting was here.
"Chief," his secretary called, "your next appointment is here."
"Send them in please," Charlie answered, "and another cup of coffee too if you please."
"I will have to go next door to the diner," she called lightly, "our coffee pot is on the fritz it seems."
"Alright," he said pinching the bridge of his nose, "just send him in Ms. Alice."
"He will see you now," he heard the girl say, shaking his head he sat back in the chair before looking up to see, Carlisle walking into his office, "Please have a seat."
"I understand that Bella has spoken to you about Hermione," Carlisle said in a peaceful tone.
"She has," Charlie said with a nod of his head, "you will have to forgive me, we have had some kids taking out mailboxes."
"Kids will be kids," Carlisle said with a small smile, "you just have to pray they grow out of it."
"If only praying was enough," Charlie said rocking back in his chair, "this vision that Hermione seems to believe that she has experienced, what do you think it is?"
"I believe that it is her memory or perhaps even her magic trying to help her," Carlisle said reluctantly, "I think that it would be good for her to keep following the trails."
"You don't think that it's a figment of her imagination?" Charlie asked leaning forward.
"No, I believe that her memories are trying to outwardly manifest themselves," Carlisle said moving to sit up straighter, "I think that would be best for her would be to wait and see if she has another similar vision. I have sent a picture of the person she saw to Kingsly, he contacted me and asked me to keep him informed. The person she saw was none other than Sirius Black, however, he died about 3 years ago now. He was Harry's godfather; they were very close."
All the color drained from Charlie's face, "they must have been close, for her to see him first."
"I don't know the whole story, just that they were close," Carlisle agreed, "I think it would be good to have her keep a journal. Kingsly has promised me that he will not spread the news of this around, but he agrees that letting her follow the dog so to speak can only speak in the long run. He also asked me to keep him informed, everyone is concerned for her you see."
"It's amazing how many people seem to care for her," Charlie said standing up from his chair, "I believe she sent a letter to Harry and she has been talking to a girl named Luna for the last couple of months now."
"She is special to them," Carlisle said vaguely, "and with any luck, her memory won't take years to return to her."
"I think we will need more than luck," Charlie said moving out from behind his desk, "thank you for coming, I was wary, but now I see that Bella was right."
"She has her insightful moments," Carlisle said with a laugh.
"Thank you for looking our for my girls," Charlie said with gratitude as he walked Carlisle to the door.

Ministry of Magic, Kingsley's office
"Well, it seems that Ms. Granger is on her way to some sort of recovery," Kingsley said putting the file in front of him, "my sources say that she has been seeing things that only she can."
Harry opened the file; he was curious about what it was she could have seen. "Sirius," Harry said in a shocked voice, "Of course she would see Padfoot first."
"Why do you say that harry?" Kingsly asked curiously.
"Well Sirius always considered her one of his own," Harry said shrugging his shoulders, "Have you any idea of how we can help her magic return?"
"No," Kingsley said the happiness on his face was nonexistent now, "the Unspeakables have never been able to figure out how to reverse spells used on squibs."
"No offense Kingsly, but it's a bunch of bull," Harry said in a disgusted tone, "I just can't believe that after all these years that someone hasn't found a way to reverse the magic spell used to strip magic from a squib. I certainly can't believe that no one has had their magic or memories appear before them in this manner."
"Harry, wait," Kingsly said standing as harry moved to leave, "Harry please, you are angry, I understand, but this is not our fault."
"No, you're right," Harry said his voice calm, "but I have to wonder, how many other witches and wizards were treated with like spells and if their memories came to them this way."
Harry did not stay to hear him reply, he did not want to know. "I don't know," was all he had heard Kingsley say.
How dare they! Harry's mind roared angrily, he was muttering to himself as he walked to the floo, how dare they perform magic they cannot reverse!
…
Ginny and Luna were sitting in the Library at Grimmauld Place when Harry stormed into the room. "Harry, what's wrong?" Ginny asked concerned. She stood and walked to him putting her hand on his shoulder.
"Hermione's memories or magic are reaching out for her to try and remember," he said as he handed Ginny the drawn sketches, "she saw and followed the dog, he turned into Sirius and she saw his Patronus."
"Wait," Luna said standing up suddenly, she left the room only to return a moment later with a letter, "here read it."
"What is this?" Harry asked, looking down at the paper, "this is from Hermione," he exclaimed in surprise.
"Yes," Luna said happily, "she can't remember me, but she thinks that she is going crazy."
"I'm not mad Luna," Harry said with a sad smile, "I'm just praying that somehow she will remember me."
"Oh Harry," Ginny said hugging him tightly, "I can't tell you what you want to hear, but we all hope that she will remember us someday."
"Have you had any progress?" He asked changing the subject.
"Well, not really," Luna said honestly, "we are at a dead-end, but I thought that we should look up spontaneous magic manifestations."
"Because that is something like what Hermione has been experiencing, she has seen Padfoot," Harry said he pointing to the dog on the paper Ginny was holding. They had called him that when they sent him letters. Harry could not help the smile that came to his face thinking about things they did when they were younger.
"She said 'that while she can see him, she couldn't hear him, and he wasn't whole, more like a figment'," Luna said looking up from the letter in her hand, "maybe it's the area, are there other magical beings in the area?"
"Hmm," Luna rubbed her chin, "no I don't think she ever mentioned anything in her letters. Just that she kept seeing a black dog. She called him a Grim."
Harry laughed lightly, "I thought I saw a grim when I ran away in third year, it turned out it was Padfoot the whole time."
"And don't forget your tea leaves," Ginny said with a laugh, "I guess the spell couldn't take some things, maybe that is why she was able to see Sirius."
"Well I think we have a new angle," Luna said with a happy clap of her hands, "now, I think I am going to go talk to my father, I have not seen him in a few days. I will come home in time for dinner."
"Okay Luna," Ginny said walking with her friend out to the door. When she returned to him, he pulled her close, before they left to go upstairs to spend the afternoon together.

~Forks, Washington, beginning of September
First day of school
"So how was your summer?" Jessica asked in an annoyed voice.
"It was good," Bella replied wanly, "yours?"
Jessica glared at her for a second before speaking in long drawn-out sentences. "You know full well how my summer was. We barely got to go farther than Seattle," Jessica moaned.
"That is just terrible," Bella agreed with a smile nodding in agreement.
"Isn't it though?" Jessica said with a sarcastic laugh.
Bella just smiled and nodded, before stopping to eat her lunch. She zoned out, missing Edward terribly, they had left school early for a family matter. She was joined shortly after by Hermione, she smiled at her and started eating her apple. They sat in silence until the bell ran and then they cleaned up and headed to their classes.
The day finished quickly, and Hermione met Bella in the parking lot. They had decided to drive together that morning and they were glad they did. Edward had pulled up as they were talking in front of Bella's truck. "Hey beautiful, need a ride?" he asked in a suave tone.
"He's cute," Hermione said tilting her head sideways, she winked and turned to Bella, "Give me the keys Bells, your beautiful creature awaits." She said the last part under her breath so only Bella could hear.
Bella looked at Hermione and giggled, she handed the keys to her and departed by blowing a kiss. "Crazy people," Hermione called as Edward pulled away. She looked around to see people staring at her, she smiled and nodded awkwardly and opened the door to Bella's truck and headed home.
"Maybe I should get a cat," Hermione said absentmindedly, "I don't remember ever having a cat."
…
~September 11th, two days before Bella's birthday
Hermione looked at the calendar, "That can't be right," she said to herself.
"What can't be right," Bella asked concerned, she looked at the date on the calendar.
"The date," Hermione said with a sigh, rubbing her forehead.
"What's wrong with the date?" Bella asked getting even more worried now.
"So, it's right then?" Hermione asked concerned.
"Yes," Bella replied, she huffed in annoyance.
"So, you forgot that your birthday is the day after next too?" Hermione asked with a sheepish look.
"Shit," Bella said smacking her head in annoyance, "how could I have forgotten?"
Hemione laughed, "shall we just forget to celebrate our birthdays this year?"
"You know Charlie won't let us," Bella said with a whine.
"What do you want to do with your birthday?" Hermione asked seriously.
"I only want to spend the day with Edward, to be honest with you," Bella said with a shrug of her shoulders.
"We don't have to celebrate if you want," Hermione said scratching her chin, "however I am sure that Alice has seen this by now and will insist on throwing you something."
"What about you? She will want to plan you something too," Bella reasoned.
"I already talked to Rosalie," Hermione hummed happily, "she is going to spend the night Friday night, and we are going to have a no boys party. And then Saturday we are going to go shopping in Seattle."
"That sounds like fun!" Bella said cheerfully, "What about Charlie, do you think we should do something at home, cake and pizza and cowboy movies?"
They laughed, "how about Wednesday?" Hermione mentioned, pointing to the day on the calendar, "it's almost smack dab in the middle of the two of us."
"Sure!" Bella chirped in a high voice.
Hermione nodded in agreement and circled it on the calendar, "can we just make it our new birthday, and then we don't have to do this again next year?"
Bella laughed and agreed and started the salad for dinner that night. "Hermione, can you pull the chicken out and heat it, please?"
"On it," she said sliding over to the fridge and opening the door, she pulled the chicken tenders from the shelf, she put together a little breading, and egg and placed them into the pan on the stove. After a half-hour or so and dinner was ready.
The back door opened to admit one uncle Charlie, Jacob, and his father Billy. "hello girls," Charlie called, "I forgot to call you to ask if there was enough for these two, to join us for dinner. So, is there?" the girls took one look at him and both thought, he is a puppy, he was bouncing up and down on his toes, fiddling with the patch on his jacket.
"One moment please," Hermione said in a prim voice. She turned to count the chicken and to look at the salad, before she turned and counted again, this time counting people and not food, "the answer that you are looking for is yes."
Bella giggled at her cousin's antics, "Yes please come wash your hands, and have a seat, dinner is ready."
The evening flowed beautifully, good food, good company, there was nothing better. The evening passed quickly and before they knew it, their company left, and they were getting ready for bed.
The next day at lunch, Alice was going over plans for Bella's party. She had already tried to get Hermione to let her have a party for her. However, Hermione had said" with Bella's and I's birthdays being so close together it would be senseless to have two parties. Hermione herself did not want one, but Alice wanted one for her. So, she settled for bugging Bella. "Come on," Alice said happily, "we can all dress up and have a fun party at home."
"If we are staying home, why are we dressing up?" Bella said in return.
"Oh, just leave off won't you," Rosalie had said, "she doesn't want to."
"BUT I got her something pretty to wear for just the occasion," Alice said with a pout, man she could rival Charlie and his puppy dog eyes, Bella thought. "Please Bella," she continued to whine.
"You won't take no for an answer, will you?" Bella asked with a sigh, she looked over at Hermione. Hermione shrugged her shoulders, "Spend your birthday how you want to Bella," Hermione said with a smile.
"Fine," Bella said in a firm voice, "but I won't be dressing up alone," she turned to look at Hermione, "and Alice," Bella said firmly, "No Heels."
"I think Bella is right on that one," Hermione said with a nod of her head, "no heels for Bella at all. She'd trip and break her neck and then Charlie would kill me."
"Deal," Alice said happily, "now remember we have a verbal contract and I won't have to come chasing after you because don't mistake me I will."
"I can't tell if she is angry or happy," Emmet whispered to Rosalie, which caused her to laugh.
"Don't encourage him," Edward said with a laugh, he put his arm around Bella.
"The bell is going to ring soon," Hermione said with a sigh looking at the clock, she leaned into Alice to ask her what she picked out for Bella.
"I can do better than that," Alice said in a sing-song voice pulling out her phone. "It's the black one," Hermione zoomed in and looked closely, before looking back up at Bella, "Oh, that is going to look gorgeous on her," Hermione said raising her eyebrow at her cousin,
"I know!" an excited Alice said with a happy grin, "wait till you see what I got her to wear with it!"
"OH," Hermione said happily drawing out the syllable, "what did you get her?"
"I'll show you tonight," Alice said giddily as the Bell rang.
"I can't wait to see it," Hermione said following Alice out of the cafeteria.
Alice sent her a lovely smile before turning to walk the opposite way down the hall.
…
The day ended quickly, Hermione and Bella headed home to drop their things. There were a couple of presents on the table and a note addressed to Bella.
Bella,
These presents are from your mother and me. I am sure that you can figure out who got you which gift. The Cullen's have asked us to join them for a birthday dinner tonight, but I must stay late at work. You and Hermione have a nice evening,
Happy Birthday sweetheart
Love, Charlie
"Well I guess that solves that problem," Bella said happily.
"Aren't you going to open your presents?" Hermione asked sitting on the couch.
"In a minute," Bella said turning towards the stairs, "let me go and put my stuff away first."
Hermione shrugged and picked her bag up and followed Bella up the stairs, she put her bag on her bed. She took a glance in the mirror, ran her hand through her curls, smiled, and then headed back down to wait for Bella.
Once Bella returned from upstairs, she said on the couch and reached for the biggest present, opening it gently she pilled out Philly's t-shirt and a hat, along with a book of sonnets and a journal. The note inside read, "Happy birthday sweetheart. Love Mom and Phil.
"Lovely," Bella said with a sigh, before making a pile and reaching for the smaller gift. She ripped this one open with wild abandon, there was an ACDC shirt, a steering wheel cover for the truck, and decal in the shape of a Hippo with googly eyes in the shape of hearts.
Bella smiled happily, "It seems on of my parents know me," Bella said with a laugh showing Hermione the hippo with heart eyes.
"It looks like you, when you are looking at Edward," Hermione laughed happily.
"Let's go put it on now!" Bella said standing up and darting to the door, pulling Hermione along with her. They went out to Bella's truck, cleaned off a spot on the back, and stuck the hippo right on the back. Before running around the front to get into the truck to put the steering wheel cover on.
"Wow Bella," Hermione said with a laugh, "it suits you."
"It's great!" she said giddily, "let's get ready to go, Alice will be expecting us soon, she swears it will take forever for us to get ready if we don't hurry."
"Let's get moving then, Ms. Birthday girl," Hermione said sticking her finger up into the air, before grabbing Bella's wrist and pulling her back to the house.
A/N: this is where I am going to end this chapter. We will dive into headfirst into the fray next chapter. I lost my U Button on my keyboard and in the process of trying to identify the correct replacement I lost Y as well. So, it has been interesting trying to type the last part of this chapter. Leave me a review tell me what you think!
