Chapter 20

~The next morning, with Hermione, and her meeting with Carlisle.

Hermione woke up, she could feel the change in the air. She looked at the clock, it was early yet, not quite 7 am. She walked to the bathroom, and then down to the kitchen to fix herself a cup of tea. She sat at the table contemplating life when she heard a knock at the kitchen door. She looked to see who it was, and to her surprise, it was Dr. Cullen.

"Is everything ok?" she asked instantly opening the door.

"I was hoping to catch you awake," he said instead of hello, "I was originally going to wait and have you come to the hospital, but that didn't seem like such a good plan once the sun came up. I didn't want to call and wake everyone up, but something has come up and there are things I must discuss with you."

"Would you like to come in?" she asked him.

"I'll just cut to the chase," he said with a look of pain on his face, "we, I mean the whole family have decided that it would be best if we left."

"Because of last night's accident," she said in a flat tone. He nodded but instead of speaking, he put two envelopes into her hand.

"What's this?" she asked gripping the letters in her hands.

"It will explain everything, there is one for you and one for your uncle," he replied, "I just want to apologize to you. I promised that I would look out for you while you were here, but I can't anymore."

She discarded the letters onto the counter next to the door. She was gripping the side of the door now, her knuckles turning white. She did not recognize this man, vampire, her doctor, her friends' father, her confidant, "Who are you?"

He made a strangled sound in his throat, "I'm sorry Hermione, it's for the best," he said turning his back on her. He was out of sight before she even had the chance to stop him or even ask other questions. She could not stop the tears that were ready to drip from her eyes, her lip trembled, pain stabbed the back of her eyes.

Closing the door gingerly, she picked up the letters and eyed them curiously. Looking at the clock she saw that it was only a quarter to 8. "It's too early for this," she mumbled to herself. What a terrible way to start the day, and she found herself on the couch staring into space. At a quarter to 10 am the telephone rang, "Hello?"

"Hermione," the voice said in a sad tone.

"Rosalie," Hermione said, her voice shaking, she tried to blink the tears from her eyes with little success.

"I'm so sorry," the voice was shaky, not trusting itself to speak further, "I'm so glad that I got to meet you."

"Me too," Hermione said into the receiver. There was a silent pause, and then there was a click. Hermione's vision fogged with tears, and she sat on the couch and sobbed. After a few minutes she heard the floor upstairs creek, she wiped her eyes and quickly moved to the kitchen. Bella was awake and Hermione did not have the nerve to face her yet.

It had taken Bella a long time to fall asleep the night before, she had stayed up late into the evening waiting for Edward. As 2 am rolled around, she finally gave up the fight and succumbed to fatigue. Her sleep was fitful, and she found herself waking up several times during the night. When she woke for the last time it was late morning. The first thing she did when she got up was look at her phone, there was a text message in her inbox from Edward, "Call me when you wake up".

"Shit," she said to herself, nothing good would come of this, she knew deep down that something bad was going to happen. She got up and went to the bathroom, before coming back to her room. She flipped it open again and debated on calling right this moment. Perhaps if she delayed, he would change his mind. She shrugged her shoulders and decided that she could not prolong the inevitable. Today was going to end in disaster, she just knew it.

She clicked on his name, and then pressed the green button. It rang twice, before the phone was answered, "Hello Bella," she knew it was Edward because it was his phone she had called. However, his voice was all wrong, she felt a feeling of dread was over her.

"Edward," she said tentatively, "hi."

"I need to talk to you," she heard him say, the words sounded forced and sad.

"Is everything ok?" she asked cautiously, she went from sitting on the bed to standing at the window.

"Will you come down and meet me," he asked before his voice paused, it had sounded like he was going to say something else.

"Yes, of course, whatever you need," Bella said holding her breath silently begging for this to just be a bad dream. Her stomach was in knots now, she wanted to vomit.

"I'll see you in a minute," he replied, the dead air hung between their phone lines, and just as she went to say, "I love you," the phone cut off mid-sentence. She stood and got dressed, blue jeans and a t-shirt. Tucking her phone into her pocket, she carefully slipped into her sneakers before bounding down the stairs. She opened the front door to see Edward standing in front of her.

"Edward," she breathed heavily shutting the door behind her. He did not stop to greet her, just took her hand, and pulled her slowly around the side of the house. There was a little sidewalk that went took them between her house and the neighbor's house. He took her through the back yard, and onto a path just beyond the tree line.

"You wanted to talk to me," she said gingerly, trying to grip his hand, that he was intent on pulling from her grip, "what's wrong?"

"My family is leaving, and I along with them," he said in what sounded like a forced tone of voice.

She sighed, rubbed her temples, she looked at him, trying to gouge what he was going to say next. "Okay?" she asked trying to make eye contact.

"You need to forget about me," he said, his voice strained and angry, "forget you ever loved me."

"Where is all this coming from," she replied, she was trying to control the shaking in her voice, she could feel the tears budding up in her eyes.

"It's the truth, I don't love you, I never did," he said in a cold tone, she looked at him, she could see him there trying to shine through.

"No, don't lie to me," she asked in a whisper, "you love me, you said so."

His back was turned towards her now, he refused to look at her to even touch her. She reached out for him, but suddenly they were like a pair of flipped magnets. The more she reached for him to farther away he stood. "I thought you loved me," he said in a mocking voice.

"What is wrong with you?" she was crying now, her chest was tight, she could not breathe. Her breath was coming faster and faster now.

"Forget about me, I never loved you, I never will, how could I?" he said in a cold voice, as he glanced at her over his shoulder. She tried to speak, so say, "but I love you so much," but her words were cut off when he continued over her, "you don't love me either, forget you ever loved a monster, you'll be better off. Goodbye Bella."

She was on the ground now, holding her chest she couldn't breathe, "Edward, please, please, Edward," this was the mantra she repeated until her vision became blurry and she felt herself falling and into darkness.

Hermione was hiding behind the kitchen door when she heard Bella run down the stairs. She heard the door open, she heard mumbling and then she heard the door shut. Now she only heard silence. She looked out the kitchen window to see Edward guiding Bella through the back yard and into the forest behind the house.

"What is he up to," she asked herself, "something isn't right."

She knew it was wrong and that she should not have followed, but she had to make sure that her cousin was alright. By the time she got to her cousin, she was passed out on the forest floor. "Oh Bella," Hermione sighed.

She knelt next to her and rubbed her shoulder gently. When Bella finally woke up, she was distraught and disoriented. Hermione sat next to her on the ground, Bella moved just enough to put her head in her cousin's lap.

...

Charlie had gone to work early in the morning, he had gotten a call in the morning. He was hoping to get home before his girls got up so he could take them to breakfast. He rubbed his forehead in annoyance. It was early afternoon by the time he got home. Walking through the door he up his stuff on the couch, "Bella, Hermione," he called from the dining room, "are you hungry, let's go get some lunch."

But there was no answer, he sighed, he ran upstairs knocked on their doors and nothing. He snuck a peek into their rooms, and again nothing. He was starting to get worried, the last place he looked was the kitchen. After doing a thorough inspection he found two letters by the back door on the counter. One was addressed to him and the other was addressed to Hermione.

He opened his letter,

Dear Charlie,

It is with great sadness, that I write this letter. I will no longer be able to see Hermione as her Doctor. You see, I got an offer from a prestigious hospital in California, it is a dream of mine you see to be able to work with the skilled staff made up of world-renown doctors. Hermione has made some progress and if she keeps up on the program that I have laid out for her, she will hopefully make more progress in her recovery.

I also want to apologize for any unhappiness our leaving may cause you and your family.

Sincerely, Carlisle Cullen

" Well," Carlisle said slightly stunned, "I wasn't expecting that." Placing the letter down on the table, he moved to look out the window. Where are you, he thought to himself, who would know? Who do I call that is not a Cullen?

He went to the phone and called Billy, "Hello Charlie, I thought you were working, what's going on?"

"I can't find the girls," Charlie said calmly, "I just read a letter from Hermione's doctor, the whole family is leaving."

Hearing this caused Billy to sit up straighter in his chair, "what do you mean leaving?"

"Apparently, Carlisle, got a prestigious job offer in California and the whole family is leaving immediately."

"I'll send Jacob," Billy said in a short voice, "he knows where to look."

"Tell him I will meet him out front of the house," Charlie said with a sigh.

"Don't worry," Billy said trying to cheer his friend, "you will find them, Chief."

"Damn right," Charlie swore with vigor, "and if I ever see these Cullen's again, I'm going to give them a piece of my mind."

Jacob arrived shortly after, "Hey Chief Swan," the boy said with a small wave jumping out of his truck and slamming the door.

"Hi, Jacob, thank you for coming on such short notice," Charlie said as calmly as he could manage.

"Right," Jacob said with a nod, "so Bella and Hermione?"

"Yes, right, I can't find them," Charlie said urgently, "you know where they might have gone?"

"I have an idea," Jacob said, "there is a path in the woods just behind the house, I figured we would start there."

"Okay," Charlie said nodding his head, "lead the way."

It did not take long to find the path behind the house, they had only roamed about 200ft from the entry of the wood when they found them. Bella was still laying on the ground only her head was in Hermione's lap.

"Are they asleep?" Charlie whispered to Jacob. Jacob answered back in the affirmative. Charlie knelt gently and shook Bella's shoulder, she startled away, but once she realized who it was, she became a cling on.

"Hermione," Jacob whispered tapping Hermione's shoulder. She opened her eyes and gave him a sad smile. "Come on let's get you home." She nodded, taking his hand, and allowing to pull her to her feet.

A/N: I hope that you had some tissues for this chapter, I nearly cried three-time writing it. I will also recommend you keep tissues on hand for the next couple of chapters.

A few of you may be confused, I know last chapter Carlisle said he would have Hermione come to the hospital, but in retrospect, even vampires can change their minds and it seemed a little less cold to have him visit the house.

I have not decided if Hermione will make progress with her memories or not. I have the next chapter written but I have to go through and tweak it because I wrote it a few years ago after I started this story, and I have to change some things around so they make sense. Also, I apologize for any grammar mistakes, I am using Grammarly but you have to read carefully or it will suggest changes that won't make sense when you read through it.
