Last time- Bella had a run-in with Laurent, dived off a cliff, saw Jacob change. and something happens between Jacob and Hermione.
Chapter 23
The first week of March
Jacob and Hermione had gone for a walk, Bella was sitting on the couch watching tv. Apparently, Jacob was going to take Hermione somewhere so he could tell her the truth. Bella sighed, she was pretty sure that Jacob and Hermione were a done deal. She smiled happily for her cousin. Her chest was hearting again, it was aching again.
There was a knock at the door. When she answered she was surprised to see Alice standing there. She looked saddened until she noticed that Bella was standing right there in the doorway. "YOUR ALIVE," Alice exclaimed, "but I saw you jump."
"Hermione pulled me out," Bella said in conformation.
"I didn't see it," Alice said shocked, "I saw you jump to your doom."
"Please come in," Bell said urging Alice to come in, "I'm so happy to see you."
"Why couldn't I see you?" Alice asked still confused about what was happening, "I can see Hermione so why I didn't see her save you?"
"That might be my fault," Jacob said walking into the room.
"How?" Alice asked cocking her head to the side.
"Wolves," Jacob said with a little bit of a growl. He pulled Hermione closer to him.
"I am aware of the treaty we have with your tribe," Alice informed him gently, "I wasn't aware that your tribe started changing. Have there been vampire activity since we've been gone?"
"Ever since your family left, it started," Jacob said tersely, "there have been others here, it's why where changing."
"What has been going on since we have been gone?" Alice asked concerned and worried.
"Well we have been chasing a red-headed vampire, and her companion, but he has left the area completely," Jacob informed her.
Alice shifted at his intense gaze. She looked back and forth between Hermione and Jacob, "has something happened?"
"Were together now," Hermione said happily gripping his hand. He returned her smile, lifting her hand to kiss her fingers.
"I'm so happy for you!" Alice exclaimed loudly and happily, "Oh I knew how it would be. I did see that you would be important to each other. That must be why I did not see Hermione pull you from the water. As Hermione's and Jacob's future is intertwined, I must not have been able to see her as well now."
The conversation was interrupted when Charlie returned home from work, "Alice," he said in surprise, "Its good to see you again."
"Hello chief swan," Alice said happily, "I'm happy to see you as well. How have you been?"
Before he could answer, the phone rang, Hermione reached to pick it up. Charlie motioned to Alice and Bella to come into the kitchen. Alice went but Bella chose to say put, she was feeling nosy.
"How has Bella been doing?" Alice asked once she and Charlie were alone.
"To be honest with you, it has been rather difficult," Charlie said rubbing the back of his head. "It's like we're losing her. She's depressed, I'm afraid she going to get into something that I can't get her out of."
Alice just nodded her head and bit her lip, perhaps it was wrong of them to leave. It was almost like Charlie knew something he was not telling her. What she would not give to have Edwards mind-reading ability at this very moment.
"Have you a place to stay while you're in town? How long do you plan to stay? You can stay here if you like, perhaps your presence will help Bella," Charlie said, the questions came one after another. Alice had to wait for him to finish talking before she could answer.
"I don't have my stay planned," Alice admitted, "I decided to come on a whim."
"You can stay will us while you're here," Charlie said with a smile. "Maybe you can talk some sense into Bella."
When they returned to the living room, Hermine and Jacob were standing by the front door. "I have to go," Jacob said in a monotone voice, "there has been an accident on the reservation."
"Do you need me to come with," Charlie asked grabbing for his coat.
Jacob nodded, "if you don't mind," he said before continuing, "Dad asked if you could, there is to be a meeting and we will need you to come anyway."
"Has something happened?" Charlie asked concerned.
"Henry clearwater has had a heart attack," Jacob said in a low tone.
"I'll be back," Charlie said turning to Bella and Hermione, "I will probably be late getting back. Why don't you girls order a pizza."
"Sure," Hermione said with a frown. Reaching for Jacob, she hugged him and whispered, "be safe," into his ear.
"I promise," he whispered back before kissing her forehead lightly, "I'll call you soon."
"Okay," she said, holding onto the door as she watched them leave. Once they pulled away, she closed the door behind her. turning around she was Bella and Alice whispering in the corner. When they realized they caught her, the motioned her over.
"What shall we do tonight?" Alice said gently.
They conspired together, eventually, the negative energy faded; and they had a wonderful reunion.
…
Alice had been staying with Bella and Hermione for a couple of days. She decided to go and check out the house, and to do some hunting during the day while everyone was at school. she didn't see Jacob again during that time. Hermione showed her the bookstore, and Alice gave her a few good ideas to get more business. Things she could put into place after graduating in June.
"So where is Bella this afternoon?" Alice asked looking through the mystery section.
"Well Jacob and I have had to keep her under lock and key pretty much anytime we aren't at school," Hermione explained without going into much detail.
"Has it been that bad?" Alice asked concerned.
"It hasn't been easy," she said shaking her head, "she's been getting into sticky situations. Say's she sees Edward, and he tells her to stop. She says that she is dying without him, her heart is broken, and it hurts to live, to breathe. I don't know what to believe Alice."
"She's his mate, not just his singer," Alice said in confirmation, "he won't admit it, we have all tried to tell him. He says that the only way to save her is to stay away from her. However, I think the distance is slowly driving them deeper into darkness. While he is depressed, I think that if he knew the danger, she was in is because he left. He will either race to save her or race to his death."
"That's not good," Hermione said sighing, "he needs to come home. You all need to come home. I am afraid of what will happen if you don't. I do not ask for me, I'm not important, but Bella, she needs you. she needs Edward."
Alice did not reply, she just pulled Hermione into a gentle hug. She held her while she cried, "you are just as important as anyone else. Do not say things like that again, but your right about Bella. I don't know what to do, I have to call Carlisle."
"Thank you," Hermione said as she calmed down, "so much has happed in the last few months. I feel like I have been holding onto Bella by the coattails and I'm not enough to keep her alive."
"We will figure it out," Alice said in a somewhat happy manner. Just then, Alice's cell phone rang, looking at her phone she says, "speak of the devil."
"Carlisle," Alice said answering the phone, as she listened her smile fell, "Hermione, I need to step out for a moment. I will be right back."
"Of course," Hermione said slightly confused.
…
"Has something happened?" Alice asked stepping out the front door of the shop and slipping around to the back.
"Edward is going somewhat insane here with worry," Carlisle said in a heavy voice, "I have tried reasoning with him. However, he won't believe that everything is fine in Forks."
"Well everything isn't all fine, but no one has died," Alice said in a tone Carlisle recognized as annoyance, "perhaps if Edward would just come and be with his mate everything would be fine."
"He can't," Carlisle spoke, "say's it would make him a monster to be with her how he wishes."
"Yet his being away from her, is slowly killing them both," Alice finished for him.
"Yes," Carlisle said, "I think it's time for me to use my authority on this issue."
"Don't make any rash decisions," Alice said lightly, "I haven't seen anything yet."
"Keep me updated," Carlisle said, his voice was sad yet positive, "I will keep an eye on Edward."
"Of course," Alice said in reply, "give jasper my love, I will call him later this evening. Hermione and I are thinking up ideas to promote her bookstore."
"That is good my child," Carlisle said his voice sounding lighter, "please pass on my greetings. I hope to see her once we return home. I am not sure she will forgive us for abandoning them."
"She hasn't said anything about it," Alice said slightly, "but I think that when you see her again perhaps an apology is in order. She's trying to keep Bella alive, Jacob said she dove headfirst to save Bella after she jumped. I didn't see her because she is tied to the wolves now. She is Jacobs imprint."
"I'm sorry she has had to keep Bella from being foolish," Carlisle said, thoughtfully, "it was wrong of us to leave as we did. I know it now, but she has also proven herself capable of greatness. I am happy that she has found love."
Meanwhile with Bella and Jacob.
Jacob was sitting on the couch flipping through the channels, "when did Hermione and Alice say they would be back?"
"In another hour or so," Bella said handing him a cold drink, and a bag of chips.
"Thank you," he said taking a sip, "that's good."
"Hermione made iced tea yesterday," Bella said taking a sip, "she wanted to experiment with peach tea, but the store only had raspberry."
"It's really good," he said taking a few more sips.
"You can tell her when they get back," she laughed, "perhaps Alice should have stayed with me and you could have gone with Hermione."
"Nope," Jacob said, "you'd try to convince Alice to go to Seattle while I was away and your still under house arrest for the last stunt you pulled."
"You don't understand," Bella said plopping into the chair across from him.
"What is there to understand," Jacob said his voice became tight, "I would do anything for Hermione, and she for me."
"I take it the talk went well than yesterday?" Bella asked curiously.
"Didn't she tell you?" Jacob asked.
"We haven't had much time to talk with Alice being here," Bella said shrugging her shoulders. "how did she take it?"
"She's amazing," Jacob said leaning back with a sigh. He started to retell the story.
They were walking hand in hand through the back yard and into the forest, "I have something I need to tell you," Jacob said lightly. His hands were shaking, he was worried about how she would react.
"What is wrong Jacob," she asked, "I'll understand whatever it is."
"You remember the tribal legends, right? How the tribe would shift into wolves when needed to protect them from the Cold Ones."
"Yes," she said nodding her head, staying quiet to allow him to continue.
"When I was sick it wasn't because I had mono. It was because I was making the change into a wolf. There is something else as well."
"Will you show me," she said gently, still holding and caressing his hand as he spoke.
"Stand back, and try not to scream," he said taking a few steps back. She moved back a few yards. Once she was in place, she heard a ripping sound. She stood worried for a few moments as she watched his clothes tear to pieces and standing in Jacobs's place was a giant russet-colored wolf. He was beautiful.
Jacob watched as she held her hand out to him, walking slowly towards him. "Jacob," she whispered, "you're beautiful."
He made a slight growling sound that came out sounding more like a purr, causing her to giggle. "I love you, Jacob," she said touching him gently, "no matter what form you take."
He nudged her hand with his muzzle before dropping low to the ground. She hugged him around the neck, and he motioned for her to get on with a bark.
"Of course, my wolf," she said as she tried to gently climb on him. She gripped his fur tightly, and he took off at a run. She laughed and hugged his neck tightly, she let out a surprised laugh when he jumped over a fallen log. When they came to a stop they were in the meadow where she had the memory vision.
When they arrived, he kneeled so she could dismount from his back. He shifted back, and she was very surprised to see him naked. "where are your clothes?"
"Well, they kind of tear when we shift so, I have none at the moment," he said lightly.
She giggled and took off her jacket and scarf, and handed them to him, "just to cover you while we talk," she said trying not to stare, "you gained some muscle and some height. Is that why you cut your hair?"
"I didn't have much choice in the matter, my fur is the length of my hair. When I shifted the first time my hair was so long, I was walking on it."
"I'll miss your long hair," she said lightly, "but you look really hot."
"Checking me out where you?" he asked gently before turning around allowing her to see everything.
If the look in her eyes were anything to go by, she was thinking naughty thoughts, "I'm sorry what?" she asked when she came back to reality.
"Nothing," he said with a laugh, "Are you ok?"
"Oh yes," she said clearing her throat, "I'm perfect. What was it you needed to tell me?"
"When we found you after you pulled Bella from the water," he stated, "when our eyes met, I knew that you were it for me."
"How so?" she asked tilting her head to the side.
"Well, for the wolves of my tribe, it's called imprinting," he said nervously, "kind of like love at first sight only different. I am yours; my life is yours," he continued speaking, he stepped closer to her as he spoke. "You are my gravity holding me to earth, without you I would float away. You are my oxygen; without you, I cannot breathe. I'll be anything you want me to be, just let me be by your side."
"I love you Jacob," was her reply and she leaned in and kissed him. the kiss was gentle and chase, they needed to return home.
"Jacob, hello," Bella called to him, he was lost in a daze. Bella could not help but laugh at him.
"What happened," he asked looking around.
"You were going to tell me about how Hermione took you now being a wolf, and then nothing," Bell said laughing, "I think that you need some fresh air."
"Sorry," he said rubbing the back of his neck, "she took it very well, and she loves me. All is right in my world."
"I knew she would understand," Bella said haughtily.
The phone rang, and as Jacob was closer Bella motioned for him to answer, "Swan residence, may I ask who is calling," he said into the receiver.
"I'm sorry, Charlie is not here," Jacob said in a tone, "he's planning a funeral."
"Is Bella…" the voice dropped.
"she's right…" Jacob said handing the phone over to Bella.
"Hello," she said into the phone but there was no one there, the line was dead.
"Who was it?" She asked handing him back the phone.
Before Jacob could answer, Hermione and Bella walked into the house. Alice had a look on her face. Bella knew that face, she was having a vision.
When she came out of the vision, she tried to call Edward, his phone was off. She called Carlisle, "Edward is going to go to the Voltari, you have to stop him."
"We'll meet you there," he said before hanging up.
"What happened," Hermione asked after she got off the phone.
"Jacob did you know you were talking to Edward on the phone just now?" Alice asked concerned.
"No, he asked if Charlie was home and I told him he was planning a funeral. Then he asked for Bella and I went to hand the phone, but she said the phone was dead. What is going on? I thought it was Dr vamp on the phone?" Jacob said confused.
"It was Edward," Alice said shaking her head, "he thinks Bella is dead."
"What?" Bella said in a hysterical voice, "What did you do!?"
"This is not his fault Bella," Alice said walking towards her, "Jacob didn't know it was Edward he thought he was talking to Carlisle. We must go to Italy; Edward is going to kill himself. We have to stop him."
"I'm coming too," Bella all but screamed turning to run up the steps.
"I have to go too," Hermione said with a deep sigh, "I promised Charlie I wouldn't let her out of my sight."
"Be safe," Jacob said hugging her to him, "promise me."
"I promise," Hermione said as they stepped towards the front door.
Bella rushed down the stairs towards the front door, "wait we need to leave dad a note," Bella said coming to a halt.
"Here," Hermione said handing her a note pad, "come out when you're ready."
"Buckle up," was all Alice said, once everyone was in the car.
Alice raced to the airport, where they boarded a plane for Italy. After picking up a car, Alice drove them to where they would most likely find Edward. He had planned to sacrifice himself to the vampire council. Hermione wondered how everything could go so wrong. They were about to be a whole different kettle of fish. Out of the frying pan, and into the fire, Hermione thought.
Alice saw her family almost immediately; they were spread out looking when Bella spotted Edward. He was standing at the fountain, she screamed his name, but he did not hear her. He was just about to un-robe and allow the humans to see him. When Bella stopped him at the last minute before he revealed himself to the people celebrating in the square. Bella and Edward were locked in a frantic kiss. The Three Kings stood and watched the Cullen boy's plan. they were just about to step in when a human, started yelling. after watching the scene, they decided the whole group must come to the Thrown Room. *
standing there in the back of the group, Hermione was seemingly forgotten. Alice and Edward were 'Reprimanded' for Edward's stupidity. The other vampires stood behind Carlisle. Jane tried to give Bella a dose of 'Pain' only to find that she was immune to it. They were going to attack Carlisle next when Alice had a 'Vision' of Edward turning Bella.
Alec looked at Hermione who stood silently, behind them. She hoped that her presence would be overlooked. Alec leaned and whispered into Aro's ear, "I believe we are forgetting someone." He pointed to the girl with the honey eyes standing just behind Rosalie and Alice. "She looks familiar does she not?"
Aro agreed with a small degree of interest. He decided not to let the girl go un-noticed. Giving the direction to Alec, he forced the small crowd to move so that Hermione was standing in the middle, "and who are you, my dear?" Aro asked in wonder and interest in the events that may occur from another human being aware of them.
"I'm Hermione Granger, Sir," she said confidently, her voice in a moderate tone. She knew that her sarcasm would not get her anywhere. If we get out of here alive, I am going to seriously hurt you, Edward, she all but yelled at him in her mind.
"Hermione Granger," Aro spoke trying the name on his tongue, it had a sort of ring to it. She was not what he expected; but then the tale was that she had gone missing. "What a beautiful name, how did your parents think of it?"
"My Mother, when she was in school, went through a fascination with Shakespeare's plays," Hermione said, with a slight smile, "Hermione is from 'The Winter's Tale'."
Aro looked at her thoughtfully before speaking, "and how did you become to be involved with such a group?"
"I promised to never leave Bella out of my sight," she said with purpose, "we're family."
Aro was thoughtful, he stood and stepped forward. He reached for her hand, and she took it knowingly. The Callens stared on in fear, and all for different reasons. Carlisle because of her past, Bella because she was a witch, and Alice because of Jacob. she was afraid he would see the wolves.
Hermione felt him looking through her mind, she tried to relax, to not think. He was done in a moment, while he could see much of what she had done, there was a wall that was blocking her mind from him. He studied the wall. It looked solid black in color and texture. He looked for an opening and saw that it was becoming fuzzy in some places. He stopped and eased out of her mind, bracing her so she did not fall. "You have been through much my dear," Aro said with much emotion. When she gave him a strange look he continued, "You may start to relearn things you have forgotten," he said cryptically, "I can't say how long it will take, but one day you will remember. Come and see me when you do."
"I hope you will forgive me one day," Aro said thoughtfully before he motioned to jane.
Jane looked gleeful when Aro sent her a stern look. She knew that look when he gave the signal she was to stop no, this look was something more. She cocked her head to the side before nodding. Go easy, he was saying. This was just for the show. "Pain," was all she said before her power surged forward and attacked the delicate-looking girl before them. Alice and Edward moved forward to step in the way but were held back by members of the Guard. Hermione was only able to stand for a few seconds before she found herself laying on the floor staring at the faces above her, and then she was screaming. She screamed the most horrifying scream any of them had ever heard. It was a solidifying sound; it pounded their ears with a force that it nearly crushed their eardrums. Finally, after another couple of seconds, Jane stopped. She stepped back, before clasping her hands in front of her.
"I think you know the repercussions should this go beyond you," Aro said to them as a whole, "We expect Miss Swan to be turned in a timely manner, and we will be checking up on you to be sure it is done. Dr. Cullen take care of Ms. Granger if you would please. You have an oath to fulfill, see to it."
"What does he mean?" Bella asked Dr. Cullen who was standing next to her.
"I'll explain later," he said motioning for her to stop talking.
As they were released, Edward bent down and picked Hermione up off the floor. They walked out for the Throne Room and silently passed a group of tourists who were like lambs to the slaughter.
Bella should call Charlie, He's probably worried sick by now, Hermione thought to Edward.
Bye, the time they reached the Airport Hermione was able to walk on her own. Once they were all outside, Hermione was engulfed in the arms of many, "can't breathe," she said from within. Everyone laughed as they released her. Bella called her father, and of course, they were in big trouble. He was not as mad when he learned that Hermione had gone to keep her from mischief. He was still angry though and when they got home, they were both grounded. Carlisle promised that they would catch the next plane home.
When she was sitting next to Rosalie on the plane she said something Alice wouldn't soon forget, "I think I might have felt pain like that before," Hermione said in a whisper so low she almost didn't hear her speak.
"How do you know?" Rosalie asked quietly holding her hand.
"It's just a feeling I have," Hermione said holding her hand to her heart just over her chest.
A/N: And here we are. I already had most of this chapter written but I had to change it to fit into this part, but I like how it turned out. So, it veers a little bit from cannon, but I had to make it to fit Hermione so there we are.
Those of you asking if Hermione will ever remember, did you get the answer you were looking for?
I will not get to update again until next weekend or the weekend after. Enjoy!
