A few hours later,
Both Natalia and Emily were fast asleep. Emily woke up to the sound of someone knocking at the door. She looked at the clock and noticed that it had been after 10 and was wondering who could have possibly been at her door. She got up and grabbed her robe. She walked down the stairs and towards the door and looked through the peephole. She shook her head when she noticed who it was. She took a deep breath and then opened the door.
"I'm not surprised that you are here, but nonetheless what are you doing here?"
"I think you know why I'm here Emily."
"I do know why but I want to know why you couldn't have waited until the morning. It's past 11. I was sound asleep. " She said as she opened the door and he followed her in and shut the door behind him.
"What do you think you could spring a baby on me and then expect me to be okay with it? I can't stop thinking about it"
"Aaron I know that you are upset but I don't think yelling at me is going to help with this situation. "
"Emily this is going to confuse things. It's going to confuse people. What are people going to think?"
"What are you asking me to do? You really think what people think matters? What happened 8 weeks ago, happened and we certainly can't change it. This is what things are now. I can't change it Aaron. "
"Do I really think about what people think about me? Of course I do Emily. I am the unit chief and one wrong accusation could get me fired. So yes i care about what people think?"
"Well then I feel sorry for you. You know what scratch that. I dont feel sorry for you. You can't just accept that this happened and that I can't change it or I'm not going to change it. I'm not going to do that again. So screw you if thats what you were implying."
"Emily. How can you be sitting here and be okay with everything? How are you not freaking out?"
"Because Aaron, I have another child to think about. Nothing good happens to her if her mother goes crazy. Do you think that I'm not freaking out? Of course I am. I didn't really think that I was going to have another baby but here we are. I have to stay sane for her. I have to accept things the way that they are Aaron. "
"Are you sure that Im the father?"
"Oh screw you Aaron if you think that I'm sleeping around. I dont have time to sleep around. If I'm not at the office fighting bad guys I'm at home fighting my 7 year old to get in the bath. So yes this child is yours."
" I don't know what you do Emily. "
"Oh come on Aaron. I can't keep doing this. We keep going around in circles and my daughter is upstairs asleep and I don't want to wake her. "
"Emily we need to talk about this."
"Talk about this? You mean you yell and I listen? Last time I checked, that isn't having a conversation."
"Mommy?"Natalia said as she was standing at the bottom of the stairs with her teddy bear in one hand. Emily looked at her daughter and started to walk towards her.
"It's okay baby, come on. Let's go and get you back in bed. You have an early day tomorrow."
She shook her head and Emily lifted her up and carried her up the stairs. As Emily was carrying her daughter up the stairs, she couldn't understand how Aaron didn't see the bigger picture. She knew that this is a shock for the both of them and that it would change things a lot but at the end of the day, none of that mattered to Emily. She was going to be bringing a new life into the world. She was going to have another baby, and to her nothing else mattered and she just wished that Aaron could see it the way that she does. As she walked up the stairs, thoughts had clouded Aaron's judgment. He couldnt see it the way that Emily does. He kept thinking of the negative things rather than the positive things. He chose not to see it the way that she does and that she hoped that one day he would eventually come around.
"Mommy why is Aaron yelling at you in our living room?" Natalia asked when she was being tucked back into bed.
"He's just upset honey."
"Why was he yelling at you? That's what woke me up."
"I'm sorry baby. We didn't mean to wake you. We were just having a conversation and we both got angry. Nothing to be worried about. "
"Are you sure?"
"Yes honey. Very sure."
"Okay mommy. Good night."
"Goodnight baby. Love you."
"Love you too Mommy." She said as her eyes closed
Emily stood up and gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead and walked out the door and shut it behind her. When she walked down the stairs she saw Aaron sitting on the couch. She sat next to him and didnt say a word. She knew that if she kept having the same conversation that she would snap, she just kept repeating the same things and nothing that she said could change his mind.
"Emily.. I..."
"Aaron.. " she said as she cut him off "I know that you're in shock and that this is a something that none of us were expecting but the unexpected happened. This is someone who we should be excited about Aaron. I mean we're going to have a baby but you cant seem to see the bigger picture here. This is a new life Aaron, a life that we created together. But if you cant accept that then tell me the words. Ive raised a child on my own before hell i'm still raising her on my own and i think she turned about pretty great. I'll do it again if I have too."
"Im sorry Emily, this is just a lot to process. I want to be excited for us, I mean you're right, you are bringing our baby into the world in just a few months but I cant seem to think about what could happen with our jobs."
"You're so concerned about what everyone else will think that you cant even see the bigger picture but I cant force you to see what I see. I know that you'll eventually but I just dont know how long eventually is."
"I think I should get going Emily. It's getting late and we both have to get up early in the morning. "
"I get what you're doing Aaron but you cant just sweep this child under the rug. Whether you want it or not, this baby is coming just a few months. Talk to me when you finally get your head out of your ass. "
"Get my head out of my ass? You sprung this on me like three days ago Emily. How do yo expect me to react?"
"I'm not going to argue with you Aaron, just talk to me when you want to have a real conversation. Not you yell and I listen. "
He grabbed his coat and walked out of the door. She couldn't believe him, how could someone deny their own child?
She started to pace the living room, thoughts raced through her mind. She couldn't understand, she was so angry at him. She looked at the clock and took a deep breath. She saw what time it was and decided that it would be a good idea that she should get some sleep. She locked the door and turned out the lights and headed up the stairs. She was just about to fall asleep when she heard her phone ring. She groaned and then rolled over to grab her phone. She saw the caller ID.
"Penelope. You better not be calling me for a case and you just want to get a drink."
"Sorry sugar. I wish. We have a case in Arizona and Hotch wants everyone here in 30 minutes. "
"Alright fine, Ill be there. I have to call Marissa to come for Natalia. "
"Sounds good. Thanks Em!"
After she hung up the phone, she groaned and got out of bed. She pulled her bag out and started to fill it with the normal things. Extra clothes, deodorant, tooth brush and paste, etc. She looked at the clock, and did not like the fact that she was going to wake up Marissa at such an early hour.
"Hello?"
"Sorry to bother you, I know that its really early in the morning, but can you come over and watch Natalia? I just got called into a case."'
"Yeah sure, I'll be there in 10."
"Thanks"
As Emily waited for Marissa to arrive, she started to move her bags by the door to get ready to go. She then grabbed a paper and a pen and started to write her daughter a note. She hated leaving in the middle of the night but she also didn't want to wake her daughter up in the middle of the night. She did that once and regretted it.
She was putting the note down when she heard a knock at the door. She looked through the peephole and opened the door.
"Thank you so much Marissa. I hate to call so early in the morning."
"I dont mind. I know what I was signing up for when I started working for you. "She said with a slight giggle.
"Well don't think that this doesn't go unnoticed. We truly appreciate you. Alright, I left a note on the counter for Natalia in the morning when she wakes up. Ill call when i get a chance and call if you need anything, and "
"Call for emergency. I know the numbers by heart Em." She said as she laughed.
"Thanks. Alright bye"
"Bye Em. Safe travels."
"Thanks." She said as she walked out the door.
As she was driving to the BAU, she thought about the conversation she had with Hotch the night before. She couldnt shake out the conversation. She just felt really sad. She didn't know how this was going to go but she knew that she had a job to do and that at this point, nothing else mattered besides taking care of herself and her unborn child.
