This takes place during BoO. It'll be self-explanatory based on the title. BoO is one of the books I don't own so I based all this off of memory and wiki. (But as I'm publishing this, I got BoO for my birthday).
Story #20: The 36 Hours in Portugal (While Nico was Asleep)
If it was up to Reyna, they would've gone back to Camp Half-Blood in one trip. No resting, no pit stops, just one straight and continuous trip. But she isn't their mode of transportation or carrying the giant Parthenos so she has less of a say in whether to keep moving. Besides, Nico needs the rest and she would force him to take a nap than shadow-travel fatigued. The lanky kid needed to rejuvenate if they wanted to make it safely.
If mortals couldn't drink and drive without crashing, what more for a drained demigod and shadow-travelling?
Besides, she needed the rest too even if she didn't want to admit it. She didn't know who they'll encounter along the way. Maybe it's because Reyna's older, maturity-wise. Maybe it's because a father-to-be and their small and pasty mode of transportation rely on her staying calm.
"Drink something," Coach orders, shoving a cup nearby her face. "You look more dead than him and he's unconscious."
No filter on that faun - satyr - same thing. Reyna looks up at him and sees that he's almost the same height as her standing while she's sitting, which isn't helping her block out the burning Portuguese sun from her eyes. At least Nico was getting shade from the Parthenos. Coach juts the odd paper cup again. Droplets land on Reyna's arm as she begrudgingly takes the cup. She looks down and sees a murky brown liquid that somehow looks clear at the same time. It's odourless and doesn't appear to be hot or cold. She can't tell whether it's soda, coffee or iced tea which is frightening. Or maybe it was Coach's infamous sports medicine. It scares her even more that she isn't sure which beverage she'd prefer.
She holds the cup by the rim, dangling it over her knees as she watches people and tourists walk by cheering and capturing photos. Reyna hopes The Mist is covering them since she doesn't want her or Nico to be in the background of any tourist pics. Oh, and the Parthenos. Not for safety reasons but for the sake of not wanting to be seen here in this predicament. She knows that if The Mist wasn't working in their favour, she'd be seen with the sleeping kid wearing the giant statue like a backpack and the goat man bouncing back and forth to find something to pass the time.
Speaking of Coach, where did he go? The last time Reyna lost track of him, he was making flower crowns for tourists for money. Reyna never wanted to wear one but was flattered when Coach offered her one made of marigolds that complemented her eyes unless he wanted her to pay for it which he did. It's not like she had any money and it wouldn't make any sense for her to pay him since he was making the money for them.
"Come on…" Reyna mutters, squinting her eyes. She holds a hand above her brows to block out the sun as she tries to look for Coach in the crowded city square.
He's a small, babbling goat-man. He shouldn't be that hard to spot.
How long should she be looking before being concerned?
Reyna's eyes divert towards a crowd forming nearby. She sits straight before standing to get a better look. Her grip tightens on her sword as she walks closer, looking at Nico who's still asleep on the pavement.
Reyna pushes through the crowd and stops when she sees something she can never unsee. Coach is dancing, wiggling his small body and limbs to non-existent music. That satyr was about to be a father. It's probably a song in his head. People cheer and throw coins in the centre where Coach catches them all in his baseball cap. Not one coin clatters on the cobblestone ground.
"Join me, Reyna!" Coach says, holding out an arm.
"Gods, no," Reyna responds.
"Suit yourself. This is my solo!"
Reyna backs away as Coach continues hogging a spotlight she didn't want. She didn't want to do some interpretive dance with mixed-martial arts. Now people would think they're associated with each other since he said her name and asked to dance. Where was Juno to erase this memory?
Reyna walks back to Nico who was still asleep. She considers him lucky not to have seen that sight. She sighs as she sits back down beside Nico. The weird beverage is still there, the cup sitting on the ground between herself and Nico, the cement around it now decorated with rings of water. Reyna doesn't trust it, not one bit, despite knowing that Coach has nothing but good intentions as a protector. They seemed heightened now that he was expecting a child.
Reyna looks up when some tourists walk by her and Nico. They seem harmless, innocent, but Reyna can never be too sure. When they get closer, eyes on her and Nico, she's ready to jump up and fight, especially when one of them holds out a fist. Reyna watches the fist open and some coins fall into the cup, splashing a little. Reyna takes a second before faking a smile and thanking them in Portuguese, which she picked up only from sitting in this spot for so long.
Maybe the Mist is making her and Nico look like homeless children. Even without it, Nico looks sickly from all the hard travelling. Reyna doesn't need a mirror to know she looks drained because her body's so tired. Coach did say she looked more dead than Nico.
"What did you do?" Reyna asks when she notices Coach walking towards her sheepishly.
Coach puts his hands on his hips and glares at her. Not as threatening as he thought the gesture would be, especially since the coins he got from dancing jingle in his pockets. "Something goes wrong and you blame me. Where's your trust after the journey so far?"
Reyna keeps a straight face, cocking a brow.
"Yes, I did it!" Coach yells, taking a seat in front of her and beside Nico. "Someone has to make money for the rest of the way, especially since the kid's always sleeping. You could be doing something."
"Excuse me?"
"Kid's lugging the statue and transporting us, I'm protecting you two and making money, and now - never mind you're finally contributing."
"What?"
Reyna watches as Coach picks up the untouched cup of a questionable liquid he gave her earlier. She hopes he doesn't force it in her, especially now, but he whistles when he sees the coins someone gave them when they thought she and Nico were homeless.
"You're welcome," Reyna says proudly, claiming the credit.
She doesn't have enough time to stop Coach from drinking the weird drink and eating the paper cup. Reyna hopes he didn't eat the money but won't be surprised if he did. There goes her contribution to this weird journey.
Gods, and it's only been an hour.
