I'm elated for this chapter because it's a sneak peek for a Percabeth one-shot that I've been dying to release. All information on that will be at the end, as usual.
I wasn't sure when I would get around to actually writing this chapter since the one-shot is already out, but I got in the mood for it when I published the story since it was being well received.
Story #31: They're Having a "Study Break" in There!
The only time Percy was happy to be an only child at Camp was because he had the cabin to himself. Maybe there would be times when it was nice to have someone else in the room and he says this as someone who never has to share. He's spent time in Cabin 11 when he first came to Camp … never again. And he's seen other half-bloods wage wars with their siblings over petty things like not changing the toilet paper or being the reason they failed the cabin inspections and have to shower last; all to which he responds with closing the curtains.
Silence in the cabin was either a blessing or a curse. A blessing because he's by himself in serenity but a curse since the constant noise in his mind fills the emptiness. He thought being alone in his cabin would be helpful since he has an exam tomorrow he has to study for, but maybe he'd concentrate out there while sitting in the middle of all the Ares kids trying to find where they buried their landmines.
Percy sits on the floor in the centre of his cabin, right in front of the statue of his father just so he could lean back on it like a chair. His worksheets are scattered all around him as he bounces a pencil against his knee. Percy isn't sure if the questions are upside down or if that's how the math equation is supposed to look. He rotates the sheet and the variables swirl, nauseating him. He never thought he could get seasick, let alone on land.
He calms when he looks up at his cabin door opening. Annabeth walks in, smiling at him with a pile of paper in her folded arms. She kicks the door closed behind her before approaching him.
"I would've been here sooner but Katie and Miranda are turning the soil in the garden and had a mishap with some vines," Annabeth says, exhaling sharply as she takes a seat. Her cheeks are flushed, tinged with red as the papers sit on her crossed legs.
"I noticed," Percy responds, picking a leaf out of her curls and tossing it to the side.
"Make any progress?"
"Uh…" Percy hesitates, looking down at the mess of blank worksheets. That's enough of an answer for her.
"I printed your math homework in Ancient Greek."
Annabeth beams as she shows him. Percy holds her close by the waist as he looks over, thinking that maybe translating his math equations would help him understand it better. However, the symbols and variables look so similar that Percy thought he was still fixated on his original copies. Even Annabeth's brows furrow at the similarities but math's present notation did stem from Ancient Greek.
"Styx…" Annabeth curses. "I would've assumed there was more evolution in this."
"We tried," Percy says, putting his pencil down. His arm is still holding Annabeth beside him.
"I was going to suggest giving you a kiss for every question you got right. I figured that'd motivate you to actually try."
Percy straightens. He would've made more of an effort to do his practice questions if that offer was on the table sooner. Annabeth grins coyly at him thinking her words over
"I mean…" Percy mutters, playing with one of her curls. "X equals 31."
She frowns. "You weren't even solving for X."
"A for effort?" Percy tries, leaning in closer to her anyways.
"Still the wrong letter," Annabeth laughs before kissing him.
As she shifts her position to sit more comfortably, Percy puts his other hand on her hip to hold her. Before he could go further, his cabin's door swings open and the two part. Percy's worksheets fly everywhere as he puts himself in front of Annabeth to shield her from whatever barged in on them. He notices that Annabeth already has her dagger clenched in her grip.
"Brother!"
When the papers fall, Percy and Annabeth are relieved to see that it's only Tyson. They both settle as the cyclops smiles at them. Percy couldn't help but think that someone, or some gods, are definitely working some revenge plot for having literally his other cabin-mate storm in now, of all times. It's not like Tyson needed to knock since it's his cabin too.
"It's a mess out there!" Tyson exclaims, glancing back out at Camp.
Percy and Annabeth peer over and catch glimpses of Ares' cabin arguing with Demeter's over landmines in the gardens.
"Were you two busy?" Tyson asks innocently.
"...a little," Percy responds casually.
"Have fun!"
Before Percy or Annabeth could say anything, Tyson runs back out. Worksheets fly around them again, falling like snowflakes.
Annabeth laughs a little as she puts her dagger down. "Where were we?"
"Solving for Y," Percy responds.
"Now you're making stuff up."
Annabeth pulls him closer by the collar of his shirt as she kisses him. Her grip loosens until a sound from the back of the cabin startles them. Percy winces as Annabeth accidentally bites his lip. He backs up as Annabeth grabs her dagger and turns around only for them to be staring up at Athena giving dirty looks at Poseidon's statue.
"No wonder Olympus isn't finished yet," Athena mutters disgracefully. Now her burning stare lingers on Percy who's touching his bottom lip with his palm to see if Annabeth's bite drew blood, unfazed that the Goddess of Wisdom and his girlfriend's mother is looking down on him (but what's new?)
"Mom!" Annabeth yells, putting her dagger down again. "I was taking a break. Rome wasn't built in a day, you know."
Athena sighs annoyed. "Honestly, Annabeth, don't compare us to them. Get back to work soon."
Annabeth nods as Athena leaves. She narrows her eyes before looking back at Percy who's trying not to react but his smile is nearly breaking through his lips. Looking back on this moment in the future, she could see them laughing over it.
"Where were we?" Annabeth asks.
"With what?" Percy teases.
Their lips didn't even get a chance to reunite before Coach Hedge nearly kicked down his cabin door. Annabeth didn't grab her dagger this time. On instinct, she leaped to her feet to hide behind Poseidon's statue but it wasn't quick enough. Coach was staring at both of them with his bat in his hands, a bat that was the same size as the satyr himself.
"Did you two not learn your lesson?" Coach scolds.
"This is my cabin!" Percy tries to argue. "I was doing homework!"
"Grounded!"
Annabeth perks out from behind the statue. "Coach, I-"
Coach swings his bat over his shoulder. "Not one word, missy, back to your cabin you go!"
"But-"
"Grounded!"
Annabeth wouldn't bother arguing, especially with Coach and his bat. Instead, she starts heading out, giving Percy a quick kiss on the way. It wouldn't make a difference since Coach already grounded them.
My study breaks are writing fics but who am I to complain?
And now, the one-shot which is out now:
Study Break - Percy thought Hera's cabin was the perfect place to study and it was, even when Annabeth walked in.
