'Mum?'
The word hung in the dust-filled air.
'Dad?'
The second word joined the first.
'Anyone?'
The three words combined to form a sort of sinister threesome, which was rudely interrupted by a bang. Redness consumed everything. The speaker of the three words did not speak again for some time.
When they did speak, the redness had become white.
'What's-'
They attempted to sit up, and screamed. Slumping back down, they finished their sentence.
'Going on?'
Somebody may have replied; they did not know. Gradually, they became aware that the silence they could hear was not actually an absence of sound. Instead, it was a constant, and it was impossible to distinguish a single word. Suddenly, it stopped. A needle pierced their arm, but felt no pain. They felt nothing at all.
They opened their eyes.
'What's your name?' somebody asked them. They opened their mouth to respond, but nothing came out.
As the blurriness in their vision cleared, they became aware of their surroundings. It seemed to be a tent, hastily constructed.
They tried to speak again, and this time it was audible.
'I don't know.'
