Hey!

I've a lengthy author note, sorry. but I think it is helpful to clarify a few things about this story… I hope so!

I've read most of gwtw fanfics and I'm astonished there's not very much Scarlett/other men pairings and if there are, unfortunately they are not finished. One I like is "Georgia Rain"...

I decided to write these pairings and then thought why not Big Sam, one of Scarlett's friends. One who likes Scarlett and Scarlett, him in return. So here's the first chapter of it. I know it's a bit unorthodox, but of all the pairings on my mind I love this particular to pieces. Cheers to SS , lolol.

Really, not sure where this story is going or what will happen, but I have a few ideas about it that maybe make them two or more stories from just this one…

As the pairing is very clear this is not going to be all roses, definitely I'll touch more on slavery and kkk that MM had glossed over, so be aware that many of the characters will not be friendly here. I'm sure you know why. Rhett is one of them, for I can't get over the fact that he killed a Black man in cold blood because he'd been "uppity" to a white woman.

English isn't my native or second language. So forgive me for any grammar mistakes and other things…

And please forgive me if I unintentionally disrespect someone/group of people for I'm not very familiar with words or phrases which are culturally offensive in American English… I'll try my best. Though there would be maybe words that come out of characters' mouth that could be offensive, but not my own view on the matter.

I'm not a very historical person and not very familiar with the history of America, but I try to research, but if you find I'm going awry please remind me and beforehand I remind you this is a work of fiction and nothing more.

btw, have you by any chance got familiar with "The Wind Done Gone"? What's your opinion on it? I'd love to know! And if you want to know about mine, I've written at my profile page, not all my reasoning though.

The song "like I'm gonna lose you" by Meghan Trainer and John Legend is the theme of this story.

When I picture this Scarlett, the face of Sophia Loren would pop into my mind and as Big Sam I imagine he's like Michael B. Jordan, (isn't he perfect for dear Scarlett?) ;)

Disclaimer: all is MM's and not mine.

Feedback will be appreciated. Enjoy!

Scarlett stepped down the flight of stairs and walked up straight to the table where she knew there was a set of a jug of lemonade and glasses. Picked up the tray and slipped out of the entrance door, turned about the house and walked briskly onto the field where she knew would find her friend while minding to not spilt the lemonade or to break glasses.

She was already feeling sweat pouring out of her body and could not imagine how the field hands were faring with. The day was hot and without any breeze. Everyone in the house was feeling faint from the heat so lemonade was ready at all times. They were in the house shielding from the worst of the sun and heat, not like the field hands who were working under the ruthless sun that have no mercy to make the hard work for them somewhat bearable.

Of course, everyone would not see the same as her, others would say, "for they are dark, their skin is thick, they are used to this, they need some discipline, it is what they are born to do."

But they did not know anything, for Scarlett had seen how her friends could get irritated by the heat weather, by the hard work, how their hands' skin would break from the thorns of the cotton, and how they would get blisters. For god's sake, she had touched his hands and knew how awful that hurt, even though they were strong and big.

Besides that she had made a promise and she would be damned if she did not hold it. Internally, feeling naughty, for swearing, even in her own mind. All his doing, she was sure.

She gave the tray to Apostle, "where is Sam?" He nodded his head to the left where he was taking cotton. She took one glass of lemonade and walked up to him.

"Miss Scarlett what are you doing here in this weather and without your umbrella! You know, Mammy will be angry with you."

"Doesn't matter. Sam, I've brought you lemonade."

"Miss –" he said with concern in his eyes. It wasn't like he was not happy with her being here and bringing lemonade for him, but he was worried about her getting punished for doing something that Mammy or Mrs. O'Hara would deem unladylike.

"Don't Miss me! How many times have I said that when we are alone you can say my name?"

He looked around and then his attention fell back onto her, looking at her beautiful face, murmuring her name, "Scarlett" as if he was testing if it sounded as good as when they were alone.

Her face split in a big grin. Hearing her name from her friend's mouth, her handsome Sam, was as delightful as his face when he noticed she had brought him cool lemonade.

"But Scarlett, we are not alone."

She got sad, for he was right. They were not alone and their times together were not as much as she loved to.

Not wanting to see the melancholy on her lively face, he said, "You bring lemonade."

It was not a question, but he was as if asking millions of questions with those three words; you bring lemonade for me. You stand by your promise. You care about me even when you are Miss and me the darkie. You risk yourself again for me when getting grounded the last time you brought something for us.

"Yes, well," feeling shy all of a sudden, looked elsewhere and then continued, "you'd said, would appreciate a lemonade crush."

"I said that, but didn't ask you to bring."

"But I wanted to." She pouted and his breath catched. He was doomed. Scarlett was not any other girl. She was the daughter of his master and mistress and there was an ocean between them. He could not hope for anything further, best to nip it in the bud before it got out of control.

She kept on, oblivious to his inner turmoil, "I'd promised you, hadn't I?" Not letting him answer her, continued, "besides you are my —"

She leaned into him and stood on her toes to get closer if a bit to his face, whispered, "my special friend,"

He wanted to reach out and caress those beads of sweat on her forehead, but restrained himself before doing something foolish. Nobody knew of their secret, not even Elijah or Apostle.

She stepped back and said, "friends keep their promises."

A storm was brewing in his mind and heart and Scarlett as always didn't know how her words and actions had an impact on him.

She glanced at the house and said, "I need to get back before Mammy finds out, see you, same place, same time."

"Of course."

Scarlett wanted to kiss him on the cheek, but thought now was not the time for that when others could see them.

And she gathered the jug and all the glasses and walked back to the house.

This is one of her secrets for the smile on the face of her friends, especially Sam, specifically Sam as he was a ray of joy, going straight to her heart.
