Pokemon exist far and wide, across many regions in fact. Many Pokemon exist as well, over 1000 unique species all with their own unique characteristics. Many of them live peacefully among one another, while others provide confrontational or combative. What causes these clashes varies between each individual situation… and boy, would it make for some good television, don't you think?
That's what a certain powerful media conglomerate thought, and… maybe they were onto something.
A small, pink and giddy Pokemon was on the coast of some island out in the middle of nowhere. The Pokemon itself was small, feline in appearance, and floated off of the ground. The island, surrounded by water, wasn't that big. The entirety of it could be seen from an aircraft if given only a moderate height. It looked as if the sole Pokemon here was waiting for something at the coast. Said Pokemon also had a decent camera crew around them. After all, this place was going to be the location for the soon-to-be hottest reality television show around! They needed to capture any and all moments that they could! A powerful introduction was needed, as this was the start of something big! One wrong move at this stage, and they'd be dead in the water before they could even get off the ground.
This show was going to be the first in a series of shows just like this one. Contestants sign up to participate, they are assigned to teams and partake in challenges to remain in the game whilst the losing team eliminates a member, until there can only be one left standing to claim the prize.
That prize? Only 1 million Pokedollars, a sum of money that's difficult for any one Pokemon to get a hold of by themselves. Such a formula has proven to be effective many times, and so this conglomerate can provide their own spin on the idea.
Right, the conglomerate. The very secretive group known as the Overseers. Where to start with them? How did this all come to be in the first place? A good start to the story could be-
Oh, it appears the Pokemon on the island is about ready to speak. We can continue this story another time, as more pressing matters take place.
"Hello, viewers!" The Pokemon faced the camera, where the device also caught some waves crashing in the distance. Those waves started due to water type Pokemon seemingly getting closer to the island. Perhaps it was the ride in which said contestants would arrive on? "We're coming to you, LIVE from the outskirts of the Kanto region. We are currently located on one of the unnamed islands that can be found here!"
"But that's not the important part. I'm your host, Mew." The Pokemon introduced himself, putting a hand to his chest as he floated before the camera. "And let me be the first to say... Welcome to Total PokeDrama: Kanto!" He announced, grinning widely. He looked as if he wanted to say more based off of the title, but the Pokemon in the distance were getting too close. It looks as if the rides in question were Wailmers and Wailords, offering transportation to the contestants.
"The rules shall be explained soon. For now, let's introduce who's all going to be competing!" He announced as the first Wailmer stopped at the coast. From up top, another feline Pokemon hopped off and shook himself off on the sand. He gave a half wave to the Wailmer as it left, before walking up to Mew. The Pokemon here was a crème colored cat, with brown at the ends of his feet and tail. Lastly… was the coin plastered to his forehead.
"Meowth! First to arrive, how does that feel?" Mew asked to start some conversation.
"Strategic, to say the least." The cat on the ground smiled back, flicking his wrist of some stray water still on his person. "I won't believe it's a sign, but I'm gonna take use of anything I can get around here."
"I like the game plan already." Mew complimented, with him gesturing to where the sand of the coast stopped and grass was in it's place. "Head over there for now, as there's a lot more arrivals to anticipate."
Meowth went to do just that, the Scratch Cat Pokemon heading to the grass and seeing the next few rides in the ocean come closer to the beach.
"Dewgong!" Mew announced as a white seal-like Pokemon arrived alongside a Wailmer rather than on top of it, and the seal seemed to be making pleasant conversation with the whale. Wailmer left with a flap of his fin, a small blush on his face as Dewgong approached Mew. "You seem to already be in good spirits."
Dewgong smiled, waddling up the coast and stopping before the Legendary Pokemon. "It's not every day an opportunity comes up like this." She looked behind Mew and saw Meowth just staring at the beach, before looking to his paw. "Oh, am I only the second one?"
"Astute." Mew tapped her on the forehead with his tail, before sending her along to where Meowth was to get the introductions away. Soon, the third arrival showed… or third and fourth.
"Did I really need the toxic gas cloud on my ride?" Came a voice as they landed at shore.
Two Pokemon got off of the Wailord, one getting away from the "gas cloud" as far as they could. Although, the description wasn't far off. The gas cloud came from a floating purple ball that exuded gaseous fumes, while the other Pokemon was humanoid looking in appearance, save for the purple skin and title belt it wore around its waist.
"When you only have so many Wailords and Wailmers under hire, you learn to be frugal." Mew shrugged. "Besides, you two lived close by, so it wouldn't have made much sense otherwise."
"And I told you, it's a condition!" The ball shouted, their name being Koffing.
"Nevertheless, welcome Koffing and Machoke!" Mew smiled, Meowth not looking too impressed while Dewgong smiled at the both of them regardless.
"Whatever the case may be, just stay out of the way, alright?" Machoke walked past Koffing to get some fresh air, waving his hand in front of his face. "I'm looking to win, not pass out from fumes."
"Jerk…" Koffing muttered under his breath and floated over to where the others were… with Meowth and Machoke taking one step away from the ball to preserve fresh air. Koffing sighed again, Dewgong giving him an understanding look as the next ride showed up.
"Careful now, we're almost there." Whispered a female's voice, before the other one with her spoke up.
"You don't have to say it like that, I'm not some child!" Shouted a man's voice, it sounding like it was trying to sound confident.
"You flopped off the Wailord three times, I'm just making sure it doesn't happen a fourth." The girl responded as she hopped off and landed on the beach. She looked like she was… perpetually hiding in vines, or even a small bush with feet popping out around the bottom. The guy with her… was a red fish that flopped onto the coast, and continued to flop around as he was on land.
"Tangela and Magikarp!" Mew announced again as he floated over. "Lemme guess, an eventful ride?"
"Magikarp insisted after the first time that he could swim here, but we were on Wailord for hours. It made more sense to try and keep him balanced until we got here." Tangela stated.
"And look it what good it did us! I fell off two more times when you told me to stay on!"
"I can't exactly help that! I don't have hands!" Tangela shouted back.
"BIG WHOOP! LOOK AT ME!"
Mew had to hide a snicker before he made those two walk to the rest of the contestants. He was starting to like some of the drama that was already here, it just needed to persist throughout the game!
The next Wailord showed up, it almost straining from the weight it had to hold. It was only one Pokemon on him, too! A Wailmer beside him had two small Pokemon on him, just to help Wailord out with the trek. Once they got to the coast, the Wailord dumped the big sleeping feline onto the sand and took a well deserved break in the shallow water to rest.
The Wailord let the two smaller Pokemon off, one being a boulder with two arms, and the other somewhat resembling a frog with a bulb on it's back.
"I should have known we needed more crew members for Snorlax…" Mew whispered to himself as the Wailmer pat his coworker consolingly, with the other two coming up to him. "Geodude, Bulbasaur… I take it the ride wasn't bad?"
"For us." Geodude spoke, currently being held up by Bulbasaur's vines as if Geodude was piloting him. Honestly, it was just because the Seed Pokemon knew Geodude would have a difficult time getting around, so he offered this. "Was kind of difficult riding when we heard the poor guy go on about how his back was going to shatter."
"Yeah… he's gonna be okay, right?" Bulbasaur asked, before Mew quickly sent the two of them away to the others.
"Yeah yeah, he'll be fine." He looked to Snorlax and just sighed… he gave the camera a sign to give him a minute.
Snorlax was soon at the grass, snoring away as Mew looked like he had just ran a marathon. A lot of energy was spent to even move that guy… and he didn't make it any easier. And, after the Wailord was compensated generously for his services, Mew was able to get the show back on track. Another Wailord had stopped by in the meantime, and had dropped off another two contestants that were confused about the recovering Pokemon at the coast.
Two lengthy, slithery Pokemon had showed up, one being a purple snake and the other a blue dragon. The snake seemed as if he shouldn't be trustworthy, but appearances aren't much to make assumptions on. The dragon radiated poise itself, almost.
"Sorry about the wait, Ekans and Dragonair." Mew apologized right as they had docked. "Your arrival marks the halfway point of contestants arriving, thankfully."
"Am I wanting to know what happened over there?" Ekans asked about the injured Wailord situation before Mew coughed and sent them to the other contestants.
Ekans grumbled and stayed next to Koffing, Koffing being legitimately surprised that another Poison-type was on the show and thus, could stand to be next to him for long periods of time. "Big cat injured him." Koffing spoke about the situation, gesturing to the still slumbering cat.
"You know what, that makes a lot of sense." Ekans whispered back with a soft chuckle. "Been here long?"
"Showed up with the muscle guy, near the first arrivals." He grimaced toward Machoke, with Ekans picking up in his tone that Koffing had a less than exciting experience with the Fighting-type. He sighed for his fellow Poison-type as the next ride docked.
"GET HIM THE HELL AWAY FROM ME!"
"NUH UH, HIM FROM ME!"
Two loud and boisterous voices argued as they stepped off, looking like they were ready to pummel each other. They appeared similar in height and appearance; one being red and yellow with fire radiating from his body, and the other being yellow and black while sporting an electrical kind of design over his body.
"I was wondering when they'd show up!" Mew clapped his hands together and flew in between of the two arrivals. "Magmar, Electabuzz, great to see the both of you! How was the trip~?" he teased, Magmar spewing fire toward the sand.
"His little game of tag on the way here shows he can't keep his hands to himself! I almost fell in the water multiple times!" Magmar shouted while Electabuzz laughed it off.
"What, can't handle a bit of water? You're not a damn Charmander, are you?"
"I'm stronger than a little pipsqueak!"
"Prove it then, pansy!"
The two of them went to charge each other, before they were stopped telekinetically by Mew and forcefully separated them. "As much as I wanna see this, we have introductions to get through." He sent them to the others, at opposite sides. Meowth and Machamp had to deal with Electabuzz, while Geodude and Bulbasaur were cautious of the heated Magmar. Bulbasaur looked especially uncomfortable.
"You good, man?" Geodude looked down at the creature who was still carrying him.
"My best friend's a Charmander…" he whispered, upset at Electabuzz's comment about Charmanders.
Meanwhile, a Wailmer was able to drop two light Pokemon off alongside a Wailord, a pink balloon and a crab with spores on its back getting off of the Wailmer. The Wailord looked to have nearly the rest of the contestants on it! A bird with a leek, a bee with some sharp stingers for hands and an actual stinger, and a small blue tadpole-like creature.
"A great deal of people here!" Mew went to fly forward, but the bee flew past him and already went to join the remaining contestants.
"Speed this up, I got a Million to win. I'm not going to be here for months!" The bee snapped.
"Beedrill… lovely first words from a potential winner." Mew tried to stay positive as he looked to the rest. The crab inched forward and thanked the balloon for helping her down.
"Paras, Jigglypuff, sorry for the small ride."
"Oh, don't be!" Jigglypuff smiled, with her voice… sounding very pleasant to listen to! Most of her kind had voices to where it made others find it difficult to stay awake after listening. "We lived close enough, and the Wailmer wanted to test if he could transport us both."
"He was very pleasant." Paras spoke with a giggle, almost sounding like she viewed it as the Wailmer trying to look impressive for the two girls.
"Sounds good for him, then." Mew figured the review would probably warrant that Wailmer a raise from his company. As the two girls left to join the growing crew of contestants, Mew turned to the other two that had arrived. "Poliwag, Farfetch'd! Riding with Beedrill wasn't that bad, was it?"
"Hey!" Beedrill shouted from the group of contestants.
"Aside from the icy stares, not really." Poliwag would remark, smiling as she bounced over to Farfetch'd. "I made a friend!" She announced as the bird standing next to her just chuckled.
"She's optimistic about the competition. I'm only hoping some of it rubs off on me." The bird responded, with him leading the tadpole to the crowd.
"That's eighteen people who've arrived." Mew stated to himself, although he didn't know how loud he had been. It caused Tangela to speak up.
"So… how many people are showing up?"
"Yeah, how bloated is the contest?" Machoke remarked. "If I'm gonna be here for a while eliminating people, I need to know how comfy I need to get."
"Kinda just sounds like you're putting a target on your back." Remarked a new voice as the owner responsible for it… appeared.
Some gasped from the shock of someone randomly appearing, others just unfazed as a purple aura appeared before Mew. It was a purple ghost with some disembodied hands, and a long tongue. "I mean, honestly, talking on and on about how much you discredit the competition… who's gonna keep ya?" The ghost replied, the Fighting-type just keeping quiet with a growl.
"Haunter, nice entrance there!" Mew complimented. "Although… we gave you a Wailmer for a reason. What did you-"
"Gave the ride to the next guy." Haunter shrugged, that Wailmer off in the distance. "He needed him more."
The last Wailord stopped, it having two Pokemon aboard with the last Wailmer in the distance yet. Stepping off next to Haunter was a pink Pokemon, oval in appearance and sporting an egg pouch. The Pokemon that was helped off of the Wailord by her was a small shrew… albeit, blue in appearance rather than a typical yellow shade.
"Seems you arrived just in time, Chansey and Sandshrew!" Mew announced, before taking a look at Sandshrew. "Wait a minute… you're Alolan?" He asked the shrew, who just replied nervously and hid behind Chansey.
"I-i live in Kanto, truly! I-i was just… born, in Alola…" She replied, Chansey rubbing her back consolingly.
"She told me about how her family migrated when she was young." Chansey told Mew, the Legendary silently trying to figure out how he was going to let the Overseers know about an Alolan Pokemon competing on the Kantonian show. He was going to have to think of something, but for now… the poor girl could at least compete.
"Nice, nice." Haunter complimented. "We kinda need more Ice types around, anyway. Kanto kinda lacks with them…" he then saw that there was indeed an Ice-type in the crowd, that being Dewgong. "Uh… no offense to that."
"None taken!" Dewgong smiled. "I agree with you, kind of hard to keep the dragons in line." She laughed off. Ice types were rather uncommon, with Dewgong being a part of a small list that featured species like Cloyster, Jynx, and Lapras.
The three recent arrivals joined the main cast at this rate, Jigglypuff and Poliwag quick to talk to Sandshrew. "Oh, wow, the ice looks so pretty on you!" Jigglypuff complimented as the nervous shrew had no idea what to follow up with.
Mew turned to the shore and saw the Wailmer now arrive with the last Pokemon. Like many before, it was pink in coloration, with crème colored marking around the chest, stomach, and legs. And like Haunter… there was a long tongue. Longer than the ghost could make his, as this Pokemon's almost touched the sand between his feet.
"Lickitung." Mew greeted with a handshake, with the contestant actually going to hug Mew!
"Oh my gosh, man!" He cheered, spinning around with the Legend and cheering. "I can't believe you actually picked me, I was so shocked! I can't wait to meet everyone man!" He sounded like he had a cheerful vibe to him, some of the Pokemon chuckling at Lickitung's innocent behavior, or perhaps laughing at how Mew was being spun around like a doll.
"Good to, ngh, know!" Mew tried to shout over the spinning and the loud voice of the contestant. When he started to get a bit sick, that's when Mew teleported out from his grasp and regained his sense of equilibrium.
"Heh… sorry, man." Lickitung apologized, before quickly making it to the others. Everyone had showed up!
Mew made sure he was good to go before he spoke. It would have been bad if he got sick on the first episode just from a hug! "Contestants, there are twenty-two of you right now. By the end of the game, there will only be one winner left among you, while the others gain nothing." Mew started to hype up the crowd, with Meowth, Machoke, and Beedrill looking ready to start as soon as possible!
"You'll be split into teams soon, and that's where the majority of the game will be played. The teams will compete in challenges; the winning team earns immunity while the losing team congregates at night to vote off a player from their team. Not only will physical strength be tested, but social strength as well. You can be smart or strong all you want, but if you're alone… nothing is going to stop you from being blindsided." Mew warned, seeing Jigglypuff ask the first question.
"Majority of the game?"
"The teams can't stay forever, of course." Mew chuckled. "At a certain rate, everyone's gotta play for themselves! I'll announce when that day is here, but for now… let's do some teams! Everyone, follow that smoke trail!" He pointed behind the cast, them turning to see a small smoke plume not too far from where they currently were. Seemed to be near where a makeshift campsite was!
000
Mew was now seen in a spacious box, it not being all that spruced up aside from the Pokeball designs (stickers) just placed randomly across the walls. "And this is the room I call the confessional! This is where anyone can come in and talk about what they want! Parts of the game, their fellow contestants, or whatever they wish to share with the viewers at home! Everything stays secret in here…
...until they watch the reruns back home, that is!"
000
Tangela was kicking her feet as she sat on the seat in the box, looking around and studying the place. "So far… no one really seems to be cutthroat, aside from Beedrill or Machoke… but they might just be competitive! Honestly, I think a great deal of people here could be easy to talk to… aside from Magikarp. Dude was kind of a whiner… even if I totally get where he's coming from."
000
Lickitung thankfully fit in the box, with him already bouncing off the walls. "I'm so stoked to be here! Back home, a lot of people were kinda telling me not to get my hopes up. They didn't think they'd pick me among the seemingly thousands of auditions, or something like that… but look at me! I'm on TV! I can't wait to make some friends, kick some butt, and win that money!"
He glanced around a bit, before sitting down. "Honestly, I'd be cool with just making friends!"
000
Geodude was alone in the confessional, not with Bulbasaur. "The kid's nice enough to pilot me around, so I'm gonna try and keep him in the game as long as possible. That's of course… if we're on the same team." He pushed himself off the seat a bit with his arms. "I can move around just fine, it's just really nice to not drag myself around at half the speed."
000
Jigglypuff peeled a sticker off of the wall, it quickly becoming undone due to how it had lost it's stickiness easily. It floated down to the ground like a piece of paper, with the Balloon Pokemon soon looking to the camera. "I feel like winning a million dollars is way more doable in my mind now that I'm on the actual island. Part of it doesn't really feel real to me yet, but it will soon!"
000
Koffing sighed in the box, it thankfully having air vents conveniently at the top to allow it to air out if his fumes filled it. "I don't think a team's going to like having me. Toxic, no arms or legs… the only guy who's different is Ekans, and he's kind of in the same boat as me. I just hope I'm on his team, or I don't know how long my game's going to last."
There was some knocking on the door. "Hurry up in there, gas cloud! That gas is filling up faster than it's leaving!" Sounded like Beedrill from the other side. Koffing just sighed again.
000
Snorlax… barely fit in the confessional as it was, but the door was open and he was snoozing away.
000
The contestants found themselves sitting at a campsite, with two nice cabins behind them. On the trail leading from the cabins was one leading to where they'd be fed, and another path that lead down to a site by the coasts that looked to be where a campfire would be held. At this campsite, another Legendary Pokemon was nearby, having put out the small fire he had to cause the smoke trail to begin with.
"For basic introductions, this is my right-hand man, Mewtwo. He's here to co-host, and help out with challenges or other related things when I can't do it alone." Mew introduced.
"There's things you can't do alone?" Ekans remarked at the floating cat, with the host just scoffing.
"Of course, like being two places at once. Having multiple perspectives is just basic television." the cat replied back before he put his hands together, Mewtwo stepping into the background without much as saying a word.
"He's a scary guy…" Jigglypuff whispered under her breath, Dewgong catching that and nodding with her.
"So, since there's twenty-two of you, that means two teams of eleven." Mew started, with Machoke laughing.
"Simple math." he elbowed Magmar, who only rolled his eyes.
"Surprised you can do simple math." Haunter quipped back at him.
"What's that supposed to mean?" The Fighting-type asked, stepping closer to the ghost.
"I thought I made it fairly obvious on what that meant." Haunter replied again with a knowing smirk.
"As much as I want this to continue, I was interrupted. Two teams of eleven contestants. These teams will be final, and any alterations to them are up to me and only me." Mew put the attention back onto himself and grinned. "If I call your name, stand next to Mewtwo."
The 22 stood around as Mew cleared his throat and began to speak. "Stepping to the left is: Poliwag, Machoke, Magikarp, Koffing, Ekans, Magmar, Lickitung, Geodude, Bulbasaur, Dragonair, and Paras."
Those that shared those names made their way over to Mewtwo, with Mew looking to those he had left behind. "That means the other team is Snorlax, Beedrill, Sandshrew, Farfetch'd, Electabuzz, Chansey, Dewgong, Haunter, Jigglypuff, Tangela, and Meowth."
Some looked content with their team selection. Geodude gave a small high five to Bulbasaur's whip as they shared a team together, Magmar and Electabuzz shared cocky glances to each other due to the fact they weren't on separate teams, Sandshrew was happy to have Jigglypuff on her team, and Koffing looked elated for Ekans on his.
Then there were those who looked upset with their team. Namely, Beedrill looked unhappy to have the snoozing Snorlax on her team, as he hadn't made a good impression thus far. Meowth thought his team could be worse, as he saw potential in a few people so far. Machoke looked as if he felt handicapped due to his team, as other than him, the only ones who were bipedal were Magmar and Lickitung. How could he make it to the late game if he was saddled with dead weight for a team?
"And, what good is a team without an official team name?" Mew floated over to Magmar and handed him a banner. "With Kanto having such rich history, we decided for a simple yet effective naming system. Your team, is Team Red."
He floated over to Haunter and gave him the other banner. "And you, are Team Blue."
"Any other show, and these would be lazy names." Electabuzz remarked, the banners opening to reveal a Charizard picture for Team Red and a Blastoise picture to Team Blue.
"I'd hate to see what would happen if we had more teams…" Tangela muttered, with Mewtwo making a comment.
"We had Green and Yellow Team banners prepared in case the show needed more contestants." He held up the unused banners, no doubt them having a Venusaur and Pikachu image for their respective banners.
000
"There could have been four teams?!" Paras shouted, with her adjusting her posture in the box. "Thank Arceus my calculations weren't thrown off from such a thing… four teams makes it less difficult to place last, but fewer chances of survival when you do hit an elimination…"
000
"Four teams would have been better! I wouldn't have gotten stuck with all the dead weight!" Machoke ranted, crossing his arms. "A fish, a tadpole, gas ball, snake, rock with arms, and a snake dragon… and that's not including the crab and the frog holding the rock! The only dead weight the other team has is that sleepyhead!"
000
Beedrill shouted as well. "Why do I get the sleepyhead?! I would have taken the fish over him!"
000
"Now that the teams have been decided, I think it's time you guys get a fair chance to experience the island. Your first challenge happens soon! One hour!" Mew clapped his hands once more and flew over to Mewtwo. "Report over at the next smoke trail in one hour. Take this time to socialize, unpack, look around the island… you never know if you've prepared well enough!"
Mew and Mewtwo teleported away from the scene to start the next fire, which led the two teams to look at each other in front of their new cabins. The tension… was palpable.
Haunter broke the silence. "Welp, I don't know about all of you, but I think I'm gonna explore a bit to get used to my surroundings. It's been nice meetin' all of ya, but I have a victory to plan for." he said with a grin, before vanishing from the group entirely!
Some followed his lead, with Beedrill, Machamp, Electabuzz, and Magmar all leaving to further their knowledge of the terrain. Poliwag turned to her teammate, Paras. "What do you think they'll have us do first?" asked the tadpole.
"Statistically, in a show like this… it should be an easy enough challenge to familiarize ourselves into what we can expect. They wouldn't throw out the hardest challenge first."
"That's a bit reassuring. I mean, a hard challenge right off the bat would be-"
000
The twenty two soon stood in front of a platform, suspended in midair. It looked to be like a sumo ring. With them all looking up at the platform raised about ten feet off the ground, Poliwag's voice whined.
"Me and my big mouth..."
And done, for the time being. As the title suggests, I do hope to turn this into an overarching series in the future! As you might notice, the contestants listed here are all from Kanto, save for a technical appearance from an Alolan Sandshrew. That'll come into consideration soon, I promise.
Introductions to me are the hardest hurdle, as there's a lot that goes into introducing one character, let alone a whole cast all at once. Making sure all of them get enough screen time in this chapter was a goal of mine, that I hoped to get through. However, everyone will definitely get a chance in the challenge next chapter, thankfully!
I also tried to represent certain Pokemon that aren't total fan favorites when it comes to this sort of thing. Choices like Poliwag, Koffing, Ekans, Dewgong and Tangela were intentional, as I didn't want to go through the most popular ones right off the bat. I wanted to show some love to some perhaps underused Pokemon and give them a chance in the spotlight.
The media conglomerate will be an overarching story throughout the seasons of this show, rather than just in this one. I'll give them more time to shine down the line, as I wanted to get the main cast introduced before any side plots.
Other than all of that, that's about it for now! I hope anyone that read has a favorite so far! Reviews help me as a writer to find out what's working and what isn't, and I welcome the critiques. The next chapter should be out soon, as it'll cover the first challenge and elimination. Future chapters will have them be all in one, rather than split up like this episode.
