Chapter 1
The day has finally arrived. Serena and I are seated together on a plane, soaring towards the Paldea Region. The hum of the aircraft fills the background as Serena turns to me, her expression a mix of excitement and curiosity.
"Ash, are you nervous?" she asks, her voice tinged with a playful tone.
I can't help but smile back at her, feeling the thrill of anticipation. "Of course, I'm getting excited," I reply with enthusiasm. "Even though this is my last year of high school, and I've switched schools twice..."
Serena chuckles softly, her eyes sparkling with understanding. "Me too. But we need to be cautious, don't we? Considering the number of fans we've accumulated. Especially now that you and Alice are being celebrated as the Royalty of Galar."
I nod, my mind racing with thoughts of our recent fame and the adventures that lie ahead. "And you and Lisia have become quite the famous idols as well," I add, matching her chuckle with my own. There's a sense of camaraderie and shared experience between us, a bond forged through our unique journeys and the fame that has followed us.
As the plane continues its journey, I gaze out of the window, lost in thought. The vast sky and the distant lands below seem to symbolize the new world of opportunities and challenges awaiting us in the Paldea Region.
As the plane begins its descent, a captivating promotional video flickers to life on the screens in front of us. "Leading the way into the future while cherishing our individuality, it's your moment to embark on a thrilling journey into the enchanting world of Pokémon!"
The footage unfolds, showcasing the picturesque Narauva Academy, and gradually zooms out to unveil the expansive beauty of the Paldea Region. "Paldea, a vast expanse brimming with verdant landscapes and natural wonders, serves as the abode of the enigmatic creatures we know as Pokémon. These magnificent beings inhabit this region in abundance."
The screen transitions to Director Clavell, the head of Narauva Academy, as he steps forward to deliver a warm introduction. "Pokémon can be discovered in every nook and cranny: from the depths of the seas to the heights of the skies, even within the bustling heart of our cities and towns. Humans and Pokémon coexist harmoniously, mutually supporting each other's lives and prosperity. Narauva Academy is your gateway to unravel the mysteries of these cherished companions. Our institution welcomes individuals from diverse regions who gather to learn together."
The video proceeds to showcase a plethora of school activities, capturing the essence of life within the academy, and culminates in a fierce Pokémon battle. "Here at Narauva Academy, aspiring Pokémon Trainers engage in battles, forging unbreakable bonds with their Pokémon, and evolving alongside them. Our comprehensive curriculum empowers students to unlock their fullest potential. Within these hallowed halls, you will find not just friends and Pokémon but also your true self. The dedicated faculty and staff at Narauva Academy eagerly anticipate your arrival with open arms."
After our plane touches down, we make our way to the Dark Manor, our temporary residence before starting our journey at Narauva Academy. This time, Absol opts for relaxation at the manor rather than accompanying us on our travels. Following Mom's suggestion, both Serena and I decide to don disguises for our time at the academy. I choose the name Florian for myself, while Serena settles on Juliana.
Upon locating Mom in the manor, she observes, "Looks like you two are already dressed in your uniforms and everything! Well, it's your first day at your new school, after all."
The school requires us to wear uniforms, with my shorts being a vibrant shade of purple and Serena's in a striking orange hue. I inquire, "So, can we head to school now?"
Mom replies, "Not just yet. The school contacted me and mentioned that you're supposed to wait here a little while longer. Those were their words, not mine! Apparently, there's something of great importance scheduled for your first day, and it hasn't arrived yet."
Serena chimes in, "I wonder what that could be..."
Just as we contemplate the mysterious arrival, the doorbell chimes melodiously, prompting my Mom to say, "Perhaps that's the very thing we've been waiting for, Ash. Would you kindly get the door?"
We make our way to the entrance and swing it open to find a distinguished gentleman standing before us - none other than the Director of Narauva Academy, Mr. Clavell.
"Do forgive the intrusion. You are...Mister Ash and Miss Serena, yes? Or should I address you as Mister Florian and Miss Juliana?" he inquires.
"We're still in our home, so our real names are just fine," I respond with a friendly smile.
"On behalf of the academy, I must apologize for the late arrival of your enrollment documents," Mr. Clavell expresses with a hint of regret. "Ah. And also for my delay in introducing myself. I am the director of Narauva Academy. You may call me Mr. Clavell."
My Mom emerges from the kitchen, clearly surprised, and exclaims, "The director?! And you came all the way in person to assist my son and Serena on their first day of Grade 3?"
Director Clavell responds with a modest nod, saying, "Well, I am responsible for the entire academy—including any failures on its part... So here at last are the enrollment documents that should have already been delivered to you."
Taking the documents from Mr. Clavell, my Mom sighs, "Goodness, you really needn't have gone through all this trouble. Since you've come all this way, can I at least offer you a cup of tea?"
"Ah, there's no need to trouble yourself," Director Clavell demurs.
Turning to Serena and me, my Mom suggests, "Ash, Serena, I've got a thing or two to discuss with the director here. Why don't you head back up to your room and finish getting ready for school? You'll need your bags—and your hats as well! Now, Mr. Clavell, you simply must join me for a cuppa. This way..."
Director Clavell acquiesces with a polite smile, "Well, how can I refuse such a kind offer?" Recognizing that this conversation may be of a private nature, Serena and I decide to leave my Mom and Director Clavell to their discussion and make our way back upstairs to prepare for our first day at Narauva Academy.
After gathering our belongings and rousing Pikachu and Sylveon from their peaceful moment, the two Pokémon share a brief connection before casting annoyed glances our way for the interruption. It seems they were enjoying some private time.
We soon rendezvous with Director Clavell, who compliments us, saying, "The uniform of our storied academy suits you quite well indeed."
Then, with a sudden realization, he exclaims, "Oh, gracious. How very careless of me. I had entirely forgotten that I have something else for you, Mister Ash and Miss Serena. Something of utmost importance. However, your living room hardly seems the appropriate place for it. Would you care to follow me outside?"
We nod in agreement as Director Clavell leads the way. My mom chimes in with well-wishes, saying, "Well, I'll leave everything to you. Good luck, and remember to-"
I immediately blush with embarrassment and interject, "Don't you dare finish that sentence, Mom!" Serena can't help but chuckle at the exchange, and together we follow Director Clavell outside, eager to discover the mysterious addition to our preparations for our first day at Narauva Academy.
Our manor, nestled in the scenic Cabo Poco, becomes the starting point for our journey as we follow Director Clavell along the Poco Path.
"Right then, dear Pokemon. Time to come out of your Poke Balls," announces Mr. Clavell as he releases three Pokémon. Among them are a verdant feline-like Pokémon, a tiny fiery-red crocodile, and a fluffy white duck.
"Oh, my... are those the Starter Pokémon of Paldea?" Serena exclaims in awe.
Director Clavell nods and explains, "We provide each student entering the university a Pokemon of their own. I'll ask you to choose which among these three you'd like to have as your partner. Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokemon. Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokemon. And Quaxly, the Duckling Pokemon."
The names Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly are as captivating as the Pokémon themselves. I observe Pikachu and Sylveon, who have eagerly begun greeting the new additions to our team, creating an instant connection between them.
"They're all very good company. Why, they usually refuse to even leave my side," Director Clavell observes with a warm smile.
I chuckle and comment, "Are you sure about that?" It's evident that the three Pokémon are already gathering around us, displaying their newfound affection. Director Clavell looks at the scene and nods, saying, "What's this? Hmm. So it turns out they're more interested in you, Master Ash and Master Lillie, than familiar old me. If that's the case, why don't you all take them?"
"Are you sure? That's incredibly kind of you, Mr. Clavell," I reply as he hands us the three Poké Balls. Director Clavell then mentions, "Since I have school work to do, so I have asked a helper to help you two out. She's living in the house over there."
Serena and I notice the sizable house in front of us, and it looks quite impressive. We follow Director Clavell to the house, spotting some familiar Pokémon like Skwovet and Vivillons along the way. Upon reaching the house, we witness Quaxly's playful antics as it jumps into the fountain to clean its feathers, striking a charming pose.
Sprigatito, on the other hand, gently sniffs the flowers, letting out a soft meow, while Fuecoco's excitement over an orange leads to an unintentional fiery mishap. Serena remarks, "All three of them are so adorable."
I wholeheartedly agree, saying, "I couldn't agree more." It's clear that our new Pokémon companions have already captured our hearts with their endearing personalities and playful antics.
As we admire our Pokémon and take in the surroundings, we suddenly notice a girl who is petting our Fuecoco. She's dressed in a white shirt with orange shorts and appears to be quite friendly. She asks, "Are you these three's Trainer?"
I nod and reply, "Yes, that's right," while observing Fuecoco attempting to share the burnt orange with Sylveon, only to have it quickly declined. Pikachu pats the crocodile and disposes of the charred fruit.
The girl offers a cheerful greeting, saying, "Buenas! We haven't met, have we?"
Director Clavell adds, "I must say, I wasn't expecting to see you here quite so soon."
The girl gasps in recognition and exclaims, "Hang on, Director... are they who I think they are?"
Director Clavell nods and confirms, "Yes, indeed. These are our academy's newest students, Mister Florian and Miss Juliana. They will be joining us as of today."
Excitement radiates from the girl as she rushes towards us, introducing herself with great enthusiasm. "So you're those kids who transferred to our school!" she exclaims. "I've been dying to find out more about you! I'm Nemona! Normally I live in the school dorms, but home is here. Whaddya say, wanna be friends?"
Serena and I share friendly smiles before I reply, "Sure, we can be friends."
Nemona's face lights up with even more enthusiasm. "Love that enthusiasm! We're gonna get along just fine!"
Director Clavell then adds, "Miss Nemona is the president of our student council and a Champion-ranked Trainer in her own right." Serena and I are taken aback by this revelation, realizing that Nemona is no ordinary Trainer; she's of considerable strength, possibly similar to my own.
"I absolutely love Pokemon Battling! In fact, we should battle right now! You and me!" Nemona eagerly proposes a battle, to which I smirk and accept the challenge. However, Director Clavell intervenes, advising, "Easy, now - the three of you will be in the same class, so you'll have plenty of time to battle later! And get to know one another better, of course."
Nemona, undeterred, suggests, "We're gonna be classmates? Nice! We'll be able to battle all we want! Let's go to the beach; we have a giant battlefield there."
As we make our way to the beach, Serena turns to Director Clavell and inquires, "So, what's up with her?"
Clavell responds, "As you may have noticed, Miss Nemona is a tad overly fond of Pokémon Battling."
Serena chuckles and remarks, "Just like Florian. I can see how similar those two can be..." It seems that Nemona's passion for battling mirrors my own, setting the stage for a dynamic friendship and future battles ahead.
As we reach the battlefield, Nemona's passion for Pokémon battling is evident in her spirited words. She emphasizes, "Anyone can be a Pokémon Trainer as long as they have Pokémon by their side! And it's our duty as Trainers to help our Pokémon grow stronger through battle! So, are you ready?"
I respond confidently, "You bet. Show me your best Pokémon."
Nemona enthusiastically sends out her choice, a Pokémon called Meowscarada, a green feline adorned with a mask. I notice the excitement in Sprigatito, my Grass Cat Pokémon, indicating that it might be the final evolution stage.
With unwavering trust in my partner, I declare, "Pikachu! I choose you!" Despite the type disadvantage, I know Pikachu can hold its own.
We kick off the battle with a Quick Attack command. Pikachu charges forward with impressive speed, prompting Nemona to exclaim, "So fast..."
Pikachu's Quick Attack manages to make contact with Meowscarada, but Nemona swiftly responds with a command of her own, "Shadow Claw!" The Ghost-type move strikes Pikachu, causing it to fall to the ground. The unexpected move had taken us by surprise. However, Pikachu, showing its resilience, got back on its feet after the hit.
"Good job, Pikachu! Use Iron Tail!" I command, determined to turn the tide of the battle. Pikachu leaps into the air and swings its tail at Meowscarada, but Nemona counters with "Flower Trick!"
Confusion sets in as Pikachu's attack connects, and I watch in amazement as it starts spinning around, creating a flurry of flowers that pursue Pikachu relentlessly until the attack finally lands.
Nemona's Flower Trick impresses me, but I'm not one to back down. I smirk and announce, "Flower Trick might be tricky, but you're not the only one with tricks up your sleeve. Use Floaty Fall!"
"Floaty what?" Both Nemona and her Meowscarada appear baffled by the unfamiliar move. Pikachu jumps into the air, surrounded by illusionary balloons that lift it higher until it disappears from view. The unexpected maneuver takes Meowscarada by surprise, causing it to crash to the ground.
"Meowscarada!" Nemona cries out in shock, while Director Clavell inquires, "Oh my, what was that move?"
Serena proudly chimes in, "Florian told me that he has been training with Pikachu to learn new moves, and this is Pikachu's very own Flying-type move."
Nemona is clearly impressed and exclaims, "A Pikachu that can use Flying-type moves... you're full of surprises!" Her excitement is palpable. She then commands, "Now, Meowscarada, use Play Rough!"
I respond with determination, "Pikachu, let's finish this off with Iron Tail!"
Pikachu's tail connects with Meowscarada, delivering a powerful blow that leaves the cat Pokémon unable to continue. Nemona looks at me with a mix of shock and admiration, admitting, "Wow... that was awesome. I can't believe your Pikachu can use moves I've never seen before."
I offer a friendly smile and inquire, "You're right, Meowscarada, wasn't that a great battle?"
Serena praises my performance, saying, "You did it, Florian. That was awesome."
"Thanks," I reply with a grateful smile. However, Nemona seems eager to continue the battle, suggesting, "I have more than one Pokémon. How about we try a different strategy and..."
Director Clavell intervenes with a stern look directed at Nemona. "Nemona. You do remember the mission I ask you to do, right?"
Nemona looks apologetic as she responds, "Ah, sorry! I got kinda caught up in all the excitement. I'm really sorry, Florian."
I reassure her, saying, "It's alright, Nemona. As much as I want to continue battling, the director is right. We have some tasks to attend to."
Director Clavell's stern expression softens as he says, "You three seem to be becoming fast friends, though you've only just met. Can I count on you to take your new schoolmates here under your wing, Miss Nemona? I'm sure they can learn a great deal from a Champion-ranked Trainer, such as yourself."
Nemona responds enthusiastically, "You bet, sir!" She then remembers something and asks, "Oh, that reminds me! Since you're new here, there's an app you definitely need! You have a smartphone, right? Let me see it for a sec."
As expected, she provides us with the Pokedex for the Paldea Region, explaining its functionality. "The Pokédex will automatically register any Pokémon you catch. It's a must-have for Pokémon Trainers! Our homeroom teacher, Mr. Jacq, actually made it himself!"
Director Clavell reminisces about the past, saying, "Back in my day, we used ordinary paper and handwritten notes to compile our Pokédexes. It's quite the age we live in now."
Nemona exclaims, "Oof! Filling out a Pokedex by hand? I can't even imagine how much work that would take!"
I chime in, "Actually, we do have some experience with that." Memories of my adventures in Hisui with Alice flood back to me, reminding me of the times we documented Pokémon by hand.
Director Clavell shares a heartfelt sentiment, saying, "Yet no matter how much the times may change, the wonder of meeting new Pokémon never does. That is a truly timeless pleasure. And the more Pokémon you encounter, the more you'll find yourself growing and changing. I hope you will both work hard toward the goal of compiling your own Pokédexes."
His words resonate with me, and I nod in agreement. "Absolutely, Director Clavell. It's an exciting journey, and we look forward to it."
Director Clavell then turns his attention to Nemona and asks her to assist us in reaching the academy. She readily accepts the responsibility, and he entrusts us to her capable hands.
As Director Clavell departs, I express my enthusiasm, saying, "I can't wait to encounter and raise many Pokémon here in the Paldea Region. It never gets old."
Nemona playfully comments, "Looks like you have a lot of experience," to which Serena replies, "Trust us, we do."
With Nemona leading the way, we leave the beach, excited about the adventures and Pokémon that await us in the Paldea Region.
