Chapter 8
While we eagerly await the start of the Treasure Hunt, Serena and I decide to spend our time capturing Pokémon in South Province Area 1. As we explore the area, we come across a lake teeming with tadpole-like Pokémon. Curiosity piqued, we approach for a closer look. To our surprise, these Pokémon aren't just typical Water-types; they actually reveal themselves to be Electric-types!
We decide to try and capture one of these unique Electric tadpole Pokémon, our Wooper, with its Poison and Ground typing, proves to be the perfect ally for this task. Its Ground-type advantage makes it resistant to Electric-type moves, which is incredibly useful in this situation. The battle is challenging but thrilling, as we navigate our way around its electric attacks. Finally, after a strategic and well-fought battle, we successfully capture the Pokémon. It's a rewarding moment, to add a new and intriguing member to our growing team.
Tadbulb: EleTadpole Pokémon: Electric Type. It floats using the electricity stored in its body. When thunderclouds are around, Tadbulb will float higher off the ground.
As we're marveling at our new capture, Tadbulb, something unexpected happens. The little Pokémon sneaks into my backpack and fishes out a Thunder Stone. Before we can react, Tadbulb begins to glow and transform, evolving into a green frog Pokemon known as Bellibolt.
"The Thunder Stone? Is that how it evolves?" Serena exclaims in surprise.
I chuckle, noticing Pikachu's reaction. "Looks like Pikachu is excited to see another Thunder Stone being put to use."
However, Pikachu seems less than pleased and gears up to give me a playful electric shock. Anticipating this, I quickly grab the Thunder Stone and playfully warn, "If you zap me, I might just use this Thunder Stone on you."
Pikachu's expression turns to one of horror at the thought. This little bluff always seems to work with him. Pikachu, understanding the jest, calms down, and we all share a light-hearted moment.
Bellibolt: EleFrog Pokémon: Electric Type. Evolve from Tadbulb with a Thunder Stone. When this Pokémon expands and contracts its wobbly body, the belly-button dynamo in its stomach produces a huge amount of electricity.
Serena's excitement about Bellibolt's unique ability, Electromorphosis, is palpable. "Ash! Did you see that? Bellibolt has the Electromorphosis ability. It's amazing! When it gets hit, it can immediately activate Charge."
I nod in agreement, equally intrigued by the potential of this ability. "I agree. That ability could be a game-changer in battles. It means Bellibolt can power up its Electric-type moves quickly after taking a hit."
We both start brainstorming strategies. "Imagine using this in a battle. Bellibolt could absorb a hit, then use Charge to boost its next Electric attack. It could turn the tide in close matches," I suggest.
Serena nods enthusiastically. "Exactly! And if we pair it with moves that benefit from the Charge boost, we could really maximize its effectiveness."
As Serena and I continue our exploration, we stumble upon a series of ponds that are home to a group of flamingo-like Pokémon. Their graceful stance and vibrant plumage immediately catch our attention. Initially, we assume they're Flying-types due to their avian nature and ability to fly. However, our assumptions are quickly turned on their head when one of the flamingo Pokémon demonstrates its prowess in combat. To our surprise, it uses Fighting-type moves like Low Kick and Double Kick with remarkable agility and strength. This unexpected revelation of its dual Flying and Fighting typing makes it an even more intriguing Pokémon to add to our team.
Realizing the unique opportunity, we decide to try and capture one. Sylveon, with its Fairy-type moves, proves to be the perfect partner for this task. Its Moonblast is the key to our success, helping us to weaken the Pokémon without causing it too much harm. After a well-fought encounter, we successfully capture the flamingo Pokémon.
Flamigo: The Synchronize Pokémon: Flying and Fighting Type. Thanks to a behavior of theirs known as "synchronizing," an entire flock of these Pokémon can attack simultaneously in perfect harmony.
Our discovery of the flamingo Pokémon's Hidden Ability, Costar, adds an extra layer of strategic depth to our team. "It's fascinating," I remark. "When it enters a battle, it can copy any stat changes that an ally has already received. That could be incredibly powerful in the right situations."
Serena nods in agreement. "Absolutely. Think about the potential combinations we could pull off in double battles. If we boost one Pokémon's stats, Flamigo can immediately mirror those enhancements when it enters the battle. This ability could turn the tide in close fights."
She continues, expressing her fondness for our new team member. "And besides its strategic value, Flamigo is just a cool Pokémon to have around. Its unique Flying and Fighting typing, combined with its elegant appearance, makes it a standout."
The anticipation in the school courtyard is palpable as Director Clavell prepares to address us about the Treasure Hunt. Despite the early wake-up call orchestrated by Nemona, who seems to take her Student Council duties a bit too energetically, everyone is gathered and eager to hear the details of our independent study assignment.
Director Clavell begins, "Excellent. It seems everyone is here. Well then, it's time that I explained your independent study assignment. As usual, the theme will be "A Treasure Hunt"! I ask each of you to set out and travel the world in search of your own treasure."
His words resonate with a sense of adventure and discovery. "You have all learned much within the walls of our fine academy... But now it is time to turn your eyes upon the wider world and deepen your understanding. Explore Paldea's abundant nature, soak in its rich culture...discover the Pokémon that live here...and get to know the people, too."
The Director's speech paints a vivid picture of the journey ahead. "Where will you travel? Who will you meet? And what will you achieve? Of course, your Pokémon partners will be there to help you. You will journey together...learn new things together...share each other's thoughts and feelings...and find something you might always treasure!"
As he concludes, a sense of excitement sweeps over the crowd. "I look forward to welcoming you all back after your independent study...when you return to us as fine young Trainers! Let the Treasure Hunt begin! Onward!"
The courtyard erupts into cheers and chatter as we all start to discuss our plans and aspirations for the Treasure Hunt. With our Pokémon by our sides and a world of possibilities ahead, we can't help but feel a thrilling sense of freedom and anticipation for the adventures that await us.
As we step outside, the atmosphere is electric with excitement. Everyone is buzzing about the Treasure Hunt, discussing strategies and destinations. "Take care, everyone! And remember—the Great Crater of Paldea is exceedingly dangerous! Entering it is a violation of school rules!" Director Clavell's parting words ring out.
I ponder the restriction, musing to myself about the dangers it might hold. "Even with dangerous Pokémon, I wonder if it's anything like the Ultra Beasts we've heard of."
Nemona, ever enthusiastic, turns to us with a big grin. "Florian! Juliana! Can you believe it? The Treasure Hunt is finally starting! So, are you guys planning on challenging the gyms under your disguised names or your real ones?"
I consider her question for a moment. "I think I'll stick to my real name. After all, when I win those Champion Cups, I want them to be in my own name, not some alias."
This decision feels right to me. It's not just about participating in the Treasure Hunt or challenging gyms; it's about forging my own path and making a name for myself in the world of Pokémon training.
Luke's question hangs in the air, filled with anticipation. "And you don't mind if we come along with you this time?"
Drandon chimes in, a hint of eagerness in his voice, "Considering everyone's had their turn except for us."
Golly adds with a smile, "I had my turn in Unova, but I'm definitely up for another adventure."
I look around at my friends, their faces alight with excitement and camaraderie. It's clear that this journey would be even more memorable with them by our side.
Serena nods enthusiastically. "Of course! Traveling in a group is always more fun. We'll have each other's backs, share experiences, and make some incredible memories together."
Nemona's excitement is palpable as she exclaims, "There are so many chances to battle, which is obviously perfect for me! You and I, we've got to battle for sure if we run into each other out there! Hope you're ready!"
I nod in agreement, relieved that Nemona has been discreet about our true identities. "Yeah, and I'm glad you didn't reveal our disguises to anyone else."
She grins mischievously, her eyes gleaming with a secret plan. "Oh yeah—battling can wait. I meant to tell you... Did you know your phone's map lets you set destinations? You could try setting one of the Gyms as your destination! That'd get you on your way easy!"
Before Nemona can delve further into her suggestion, we're interrupted by Arven's voice, tinged with a hint of annoyance. "Tch! How's that for a student council president! Giving your own friends an insider advantage?"
Our heads turn in surprise towards Arven, who seems disgruntled by Nemona's tip.
Nemona, taken aback by Arven's accusation, stammers, "Ay! A-Arven?! Insider advantage? Sheesh, you make it sound like we're cheating or something! All I did was suggest that they check out the gyms. It's up to Florian and Juliana whether they go."
Arven, seemingly unperturbed, continues, "I already know their real names. Ash and Serena're gonna have their hands full searching out Titan Pokemon with me. They don't have time to waste on something like chasing after the Champion Rank."
Well, there are those Titans to contend with as well, but honestly, we do have plenty of time for activities like these. Our class schedule isn't too demanding, and some of our classes wrap up in just two hours before the bell rings.
"Oh right, we did promise to find the lairs of the Titans and seek their Herba Mystica," Serena chimes in thoughtfully. "They also seem interesting as well."
Nemona, her skepticism apparent, retorts, "En serio? Don't go filling their heads with weird stories!"
Arven defends himself, saying, "Hey! All I did was invite them along. It's still up to them whether they go, right?"
Tensions rise among the six of us, and we're all sweating a little, not wanting a fight to erupt. However, just as things seem to be getting more heated, my phone suddenly rings, and it's a call from Cassiopeia.
As my phone call with Cassiopeia connects, her voice crackles through the line. "Hey, Ash and Serena. Cassiopeia here. It's about Operation Starfall. Remember what I told you before? Team Star is made up of five individual squads, and each one's got its own base. I need you to go to each base - all five of them - and beat the squad boss there. Team Star's grunts might try to get in your way, but I'll be helping you out... from a distance. And heads-up that the bosses each specialize in a different Pokemon type. Just remember the names of their crews, and you'll figure it out. Still, no need to worry. With your skills, I'm sure you're more than up to the task. I'll just go ahead and add the bases' locations to your phone for you."
Her words sink in, and I can't help but feel like Arceus is playing a prank on me. Out of the 18 known types of Pokemon, excluding those related to gyms and the Titans, only five remain: Fire, Dark, Fairy, Poison, and Fighting. And, coincidentally, these are the exact types associated with the Team Star squads!
Cassiopeia's voice breaks through my reverie, offering a glimmer of hope, "Good luck with those bosses. I'll hook you up with some nice rewards every time you beat one."
Nemona's voice carries a sense of urgency as she exclaims, "Wait one second! Who are you supposed to be?! And Team Star - those punks are a serious hazard! They are not Ash and Serena's problems!"
Arven interjects firmly, "That's right! Because they've got more important things to do, like searching out awesome ingredients with me!"
Cassiopeia, addressing the confusion, reminds them, "I thought it was up to Ash and Serena to decide whether they go or not... Wasn't that what you said, Nemona? And Arven?"
A stunned silence follows as they realize that Cassiopeia knows their names. She concludes with a cheerful tone, "I'm looking forward to seeing what you can pull off, Ash and Serena. Bye!"
After Cassiopeia ends the call, Arven breaks the silence with a puzzled expression, "What was that all about?"
Nemona's concern for our safety is evident as she speaks with genuine care. "Ash, Serena... I'm glad that you're making plenty of friends here, but try not to get dragged into anything dangerous."
I respond with a wry chuckle, "Well, we always seem to find ourselves in dangerous situations in other regions, whether we like it or not... But don't worry, Serena and I will handle whatever comes our way."
Nemona nods, her determination clear in her words, "I see... Then I'm going to battle every single trainer I can on my journey this time. I'll also come and see your gym battles if you want to."
Serena expresses her gratitude with a warm smile, saying, "Thanks."
Arven's eyes sparkle with enthusiasm as he shares his mission, "My treasure is going to be Ma- I mean, my treasure is to track down the Herba Mystica, that is. Once I gather them, I can make some best sandwiches for you."
I'm taken aback by his sudden change in wording and ask, intrigued, "For real?"
Just then, both Koraidon and Miraidon emerge from their Pokeballs seemingly in response to the word "sandwich."
Nemona can't contain her laughter as she exclaims, "Oh my gosh! Did they just come out because you said 'sandwich'? That's hilarious!"
Curious, Luke, who is unfamiliar with these Pokémon, asks, "Ash? Serena? What are those Pokémon? I've never seen them before..."
I explain, "They're Koraidon and Miraidon. Those are the reason why we were being called to the director's office on day 1."
"Well you're not getting any of them," Arven grumbles toward Koraidon and Miraidon, making it clear that he's not impressed. However, both Pokémon seem to have a different idea as they turn to Serena and me.
I raise an eyebrow and inquire, "Are they telling us to ride on them?"
Without hesitation, Serena decides to mount Koraidon, while I hop onto Miraidon. As we do, the two Pokémon undergo a transformation, surprising everyone.
Lucine, with a hint of doubt, questions, "Are you sure they're not Cyclizar? I know that the color looks different, but that was just a Cyclizar can do..."
I shake my head, affirming, "Well, they're not..."
Nemona, who seems to understand the situation better, offers her insight, "As long as you've got those two, you can go pretty much anywhere. Paldea's your Cloyster!"
Arven offers his travel advice, "Yeah, maybe. Well, if you're going to search for those Titan Pokemon, I'd say set out from the east gate."
Nemona, on the other hand, suggests a different route, "But since Ash and Serena are ACTUALLY headed to take on some Gyms, I'd say go for the west gate! Besides, it's way too easy to get lost out east!"
Arven, seemingly frustrated, mutters, "Tch! Man, this is why I can't get along with you... I'm out of here! Catch up soon," and departs.
Nemona bids her farewell too, stating, "I'll head to the Gym, see you around," before leaving.
Now the six of us are left behind, contemplating our next move. I glance at the map with its multitude of options and comment, "Yeah," with a bemused smile. "18 things to do... seriously..." Our adventure in this new region is certainly keeping us busy.
