Chapter 20: The Curse of the Wendigo Pt1
A wall was broken down as a black and white figure was thrown through it, rolling on the floor. Once he was finally able to use his hands to stop, Danny could only grunt as he sat up.
"I hope you don't mind, but I was looking forward to my meat being tenderized!" The Wendigo said with much amusement, one foot atop the button part of the hole he made.
Danny blew dust out of his mouth, shaking his face.
"Okay… all this pain… at least proves I'm still alive…" He muttered, feeling a deep scratch given to him by the Wendigo moments before going through the wall.
"Not for long…" The Wendigo said with a nasty grin.
From there, he closed the distance between him and Danny even closer.
Dani fired a shot at one revenant, keeping it a distance from her and the two without powers.
So far, each creature tried to simply grab them with their bony hands, rather than bite them. Dani mentally figured that they must be saving them for later, after the Wendigo finishes Danny.
"There's too many of these Skellington rip-offs, and not enough of me to keep you safe." Dani said.
"Go, we can handle ourselves." Sam said, taking a broken piece of a chair one of them broke as a weapon.
"Speak for yourself." Tucker went, hiding behind her as he lacked weaponry.
''Don't be a baby and grab something!" Sam exclaimed. Suddenly, Tucker grabbed her shoulder, cowering. "Not me! Grab a broken chair!"
"I'm a techno geek, not a caveman!" Tucker exclaimed.
"Good luck!" Dani said as she flew straight up.
Suddenly, two revenants got in front of her, surprising her that she stopped. The revenants rushed her, causing her to block with a shield before a third jumped over it and backhanded her towards Sam.
"Dani? What happened?" Sam asked as Dani landed right next to her, rubbing her head.
"They somehow got smarter? Guess I'm staying with you guys." She said in a worried tone before turning to the revenants.
As Sam swung her makeshift weapon, she can't help but see the cowering Tucker at the corner of her eye, feeling a tinge of annoyance.
"I'm the bad friend when he can't even grab a stupid piece of wood and throw it at them?" She asked out loud.
"No, it's because you got Danny and the rest in trouble for some stupid agenda no one wanted to hear about." Dani stated.
Sam gritted her teeth in anger, her eyes glowing red.
Downstairs
Danny found himself breaking through the floors until reaching the lobby of the building.
The Wendigo then landed on him, crushing him with his feet.
"I think the meat's been pounded enough. Should be pretty tender…" He said before attempting to bite Danny.
That's when Danny phased through the floors, much to the Wendigo's ire. Then a fist connected with his chin, launching him upward.
"Did that feel tender?!" Danny questioned as the Wendigo landed headfirst into the floor.
Angered but not giving up, the Wendigo got on all fours before growling in an animalistic manner.
"You're almost as much of a pain as those back home…" He said before using his speeds to tackle Danny into the wall.
Thinking fast, Danny tried to kick, only for the monster's lanky body to avoid his foot. However, a trick he picked up from Dani came to his mind as he fired a blast from the sole of his boot, enough to push his carnivorous foe away.
"Back home? In Canada?" Danny asks, massaging the neck where he was grabbed.
The Wendigo snickered at this.
"My world, genius…" The Wendigo said. "A dimension not like yours or where those ghosts come from…"
"You are?" Danny asks before seeing the Wendigo try to close in on him again, causing him to fly out of the way of a swinging claw.
"Yup. Not unlike me, my people were meat eaters. But they had more in common with your farmers, in that they nurtured the meat, cared for it, and only eat them when they're close to death." The Wendigo said with a slight hint of disappointment before grinning and gesturing to himself. "I, on the other hand, wanted my meat fresh…" He licked his teeth in a rather inappropriate manner.
"Good for you." Danny said with much disgust before firing beams at the Wendigo, who simply hopped out of the way. "Let me guess, you're considered the weird one in your place, right?"
"You'd guess right." The Wendigo said before running on all fours.
With a jump, he tried to bite Danny, only to miss as Danny spun around in time for a roundhouse kick to the back of the head.
"Yeah… did they have as much trouble dealing with you as me? Because I'd love to ask them for help." Danny said.
Getting up, the Wendigo snickered again before looking over his shoulder.
"Actually… it was pretty easy for them, seeing as they're so much more powerful than me." The Wendigo said.
Hearing that caused Danny to pause the fight, curiosity and interest now taking control.
"Seriously?" He asks, surprised to hear such a thing.
"Indeed… where I am from, I'm basically at the bottom of the litter… Those peace loving wimps who wanted to nurture and care for the meat were wasting their talents. So, when I got caught devouring meat much younger than the usual kind, some younger than you…" The Wendigo cocked his head with a slight sadistic look. "I had to make a break for it… Those rocks in my cave are coated with radiation from my world. I don't want any chance of being sent back happening, I made sure there'd be no way they'd find me here!" The Wendigo said.
"Well, I guess that's why you don't want anyone touching them." Danny recalled how the Wendigo reacted when he and Dani touched them.
"I came a long way not just for revenge, but to make sure you don't even thinking of using their radiation against me." The Wendigo said, fists clenched from his bony fingers.
"We have those rocks, we'll use them to send you back to Wendigo World or wherever you're from." Danny said, only for the Wendigo to snicker. "What's so funny?" He questioned with an edge.
"We're not called Wendigos, that's just what you humans have called me." The Wendigo said before snorting slightly. "I don't even remember what we're called, or my name, but I think what you call me works…"
In a burst of speed, the Wendigo appeared in front of Danny, startling him as he saw the wicked grin on its face. Danny threw a punch at the Wendigo, but his fist was caught, and he was thrown across the room, landing on the ground.
Laughing, the Wendigo calmly walked towards Danny, who slowly recovered. Suddenly, the Wendigo grabbed him by the collar and lifted him before punching him on the gut, sending him to a wall.
"Ow…" Danny groaned before he retaliated by firing a ghost ray at the Wendigo, who dodged it.
However, the blast ended up hitting a nearby monitor, causing sparks to fly out, some hitting the Wendigo's arm.
"Gah!" He grunted in surprise, seeing the slight burn mark on his arm. Growling, he suddenly appeared in front of Danny, claws raised.
Panicked, Danny released a flash of blue light, trapping the Wendigo in ice. He relaxed slightly, thinking he finally caught the beast, before he heard a crack. He looked at the ice, noticing a crack that rapidly grew. Eyes widening, he was pushed back as the Wendigo burst out of the ice.
The Wendigo then rushed towards Danny, with the young hero feeling its rough knuckles slam painfully on his face, followed by another to the other side, and a slam on the gut that sent him stumbling backward.
Danny retaliated by covering his fists with ice before throwing punches to the Wendigo, who didn't even flinch as Danny punched its face several times before the Wendigo caught both fists, crushing the ice with its grip before slamming him to the ground, making a crater, before kicking him away.
Danny rolled on the ground before he fired two ghost rays at the Wendigo, who blocked it with its arm, grunting in annoyance rather than pain as smoke wafted from its arms.
Danny panted heavily, wincing from the pain as the Wendigo grinned wickedly, chuckling to himself in amusement.
"What's so funny now, Slim?" Danny questioned with a sarcastic nickname.
"Where I'm from, I'm considered the slowest, weakest, and least skilled. But in this world? I'm the ultimate apex predator! Plenty of meat to eat and souls to take! Too bad I hate the heat…" He said.
Hearing that caused Danny to pause once more.
"Did I hear that right? Souls?" He asks.
"You've seen the blue lights coming out of my revenants. Whatcha think they were? Besides… you've seen them in me… when I made this blizzard." The Wendigo had a notably sadistic grin on his face as he said that.
Danny's eyes widened the highest they ever have.
"You capture souls?" Danny asks.
"Just those I eat personally, from humans and my revenants when I decide to snack on them. They're under my curse, they're a part of me now…" He went, gesturing to his stomach.
Hearing that caused revulsion and utter horror to fill Danny.
"You stole their lives, literally…" He managed to say.
"Stole them? They're part of the ultimate apex predator now… they should be honored. Heheheheh… I'll make sure your soul suffers forever… But I guess I should be thankful I hate you enough to come here, I'm going to be adding more to my number thanks to that spot all those humans are hiding in." The Wendigo said.
Hearing that, Danny felt his blood go cold.
"What?" He asks.
"That silly little shield your folks want to put up? It'll keep anything not human out, thanks to their little fixes. But… looks like they haven't finished it yet. My owl went there to keep an eye on it as soon as I knew you were going to the zoo. Already, he's making sure to turn it off in case they finish in time. Anything under my curse is just as smart as I am… let's see… the password is… "JackFentonRulez", if I'm not mistaken…" The Wendigo said with a grin, tapping the fake skull he wore for a helmet with a knowing look. "Your dad has a big mouth, one I might make into one of my revenants…"
Hearing that, Danny decided to end the fight soon, going through the ceilings until finding the rest.
There, he saw Dani and Sam doing their best to keep the revenants at bay as Tucker huddled between them.
"We gotta go! The shelter's in danger!" He said.
Hearing that, Dani grabbed Sam and Danny grabbed Tucker, making a break for it.
All the while, the Wendigo grinned.
"I get revenge and additions to my army… wonderful…" He said before making his way to the shelter.
At the Shelter
With a satisfied sigh, Jack pressed the button.
"Shield's up!" Jack went with a proud fist pump. "I deserve a cola!"
With that, he walked towards the cafeteria, only to be stopped by Maddie.
"Jack. That's for the people who actually need this place. Besides, we have enough stock at home." Maddie scolded before thinking of who was staying at their house. "Provided, our guest Danny convinced us to give free reign doesn't have it all for himself."
Back at Fenton Works
Frostbite is in the kitchen, eating a bowl of ice cream while still with bandages on his non icy arm and right leg as he opened the fridge and saw what looked like juice, but he knew better.
"That's a dumb place to keep ecto-residue samples, next to cooked chicken after all…" He commented as he took the whipped cream out.
Back at the Shelter
".. besides, we're waiting until Jazz finishes and… where are Danny and Danielle?" She asks, realizing she hadn't seen those two.
"Good question." Jack said, looking around.
Maddie then spotted something that caught her attention.
"Wait... is that an owl?" She asked, pointing ahead at the now turned on shield projector.
Her husband saw for himself that there was indeed an owl on the console. One that was pecking at the buttons.
"Hey look, it almost looks like it's typing. Wish we were recording this..." Jack said, amused to see something so cute.
But Maddie wasn't amused, believing that this was something she knew was bad news. She then remembered the something that made his bad news and panicked.
"Jack?" Maddie asked in an uneasy tone.
"What is it, Baby cakes?" Jack asked, still not getting it
"Didn't that Wendigo have an owl?" She asked, reminding him of the avian animal that he brought with him from Canada.
Realizing what she meant, Jack's grin dropped.
"Uh oh…" He went.
In that instant, both of them hurried to the machine, but were too late. The owl pressed the buttons.
The shield deactivated as the inhuman screeches occurred.
"You had to loudly state the password was "JackFentonRulez", didn't you?" Maddie questioned.
"Come now. Who's to say that it learned the password from me?" Jack asks, trying to sound innocent, much to the annoyance of an unamused Maddie.
Soon, several dozen revenants were heard breaking down the door.
Seeing the monsters inside, the entire shelter went into a panic.
A family of three were fleeing as a revenant approached them
The father stood before his wife and son.
"Please...take me but leave Macy and Todd alone..." He pleaded, terrified but tried to protect his family.
To their shock, the revenant didn't eat him. It passed him in favor of another.
"Take me wife! Leave me alone!" One said, using his wife as a shield.
The revenant pushed her aside and approached the man. Instead of attacking, it just looked him in the eye.
Dash Baxter, seeing a threat, ran for it while screaming his lungs out before running into his father. Seeing the revenants surrounding them, they tried to save their own skins.
"Take him! Not me!" They insisted, trying to push the other into harm's way until two revenants looked them in the eye.
Jeremy and Pamela Manson hid in a closet, afraid of the monsters, and locking themselves in.
Meanwhile, Ida was currently fighting off a revenant.
She used her wheelchair to ram into it.
"As soon as I have a word with you, boy, you're in deep trouble!" She shouted, angered at her son's cowardice as she used a cane to hit another one.
"That's my girl, always so spirited.." A woman's voice was heard.
The voice made Ida freeze for a moment as she recognized it.
"That voice...it can't be...Grammy Mabel?" Ida whispered as she lowered her guard upon hearing it.
Turning her head, she saw the voice came from a revenant that pushed her off, allowing the rest to break down the door.
At the same time, several of them entered the cafeteria and supply closets.
At that moment, Team Phantom had returned. Once Sam and Tucker were let down, the two Phantoms saw the chaos
"I'll get the ones on the left, you take the ones on the right..." Danny ordered, narrowing his eyes in determination.
"Fine by me..." Dani said, ready to fight.
"That won't be necessary…" A familiar voice went.
Walking between the two was someone they recalled from the lair. Someone dressed in Algonquin clothing and carried a spear.
"Chuck?" Dani asks.
"Achack." Danny corrected her.
"What'd I say?" Dani questioned with one eye squinted.
"How did you get here?" Danny asked Achack.
"I had used the same portal that the flesh eater had used to escape. I can use what little magic I have to ward these beasts out…" Achack answered as he held his spear, spun it and pierce the floor with it.
With that, a wave of energy flew through the shelter, causing the revenants to shudder in pain before starting to make their way out. With them gone now, much to everyone's relief, that's when Danny and Dani looked to Achack.
"What are you doing here?" Dani asks.
"Questioning where the portal that was inside the beast's cave led to." Achack said with a bitter look on his face. "Now I must find the beast before that portal closes… it shrank moments after I arrived."
With that, he turned his back and began walking away.
"Is everyone okay?" Danny asked.
At first, everyone sounded calm, unharmed from the experience.
"Those monsters stole our supplies! Food and warm blankets were taken or torn apart!" Someone shouted, causing everyone to panic.
Everyone freaked out as Danny flew to his parents.
"Are you alright, uh… Jack and Maddie Fenton?" Danny asks, noticing too many people around for him to use familial terms.
"We are… but those creatures didn't attack anyone. They just… looked them in the eye…" Maddie pointed out.
"Weird…" Danny went, rubbing his chin in thought.
"Shouldn't we go for… Chuck?" Dani asks, pointing towards where the spirit left.
"Achack." Danny corrected her.
"Who?" Maddie asks.
"Long story… if we follow him, we'll find the Wendigo." Danny said.
"Perfect." Maddie said with a smile. "I believe I've cracked the code on the radiation of those rocks. Once done, we'll send that voracious villain back to wherever in existence he came from."
With a nod, it was time to gear up and hunt the creature down.
However, little did they know it, the Wendigo had already done what he needed to do.
Dash saw a discarded blanket and picked it up, only for Paulina to start tugging at it.
"Mine!" She went.
"I saw it first!" Dash said.
Given the broken down door made the room colder, the two desired its warmth. As they tugged at it, they snarled at each other, eyes turning red.
The owl observed this, a cackle coming from who was looking through its eyes.
"That loser's here too, but it doesn't matter! My curse has begun…"

RonaldM40196867: They know it by now. Not part of it. Maybe? Already has it. Already has fire, not sure about void. I mean, her parents are well known moral guardians. Spoilers. Going for how he was in season one, being a somewhat nice guy who is cowed by peer pressure. Kim Possible.
Invader Johnny: Indeed, in fact, that's the main theme of the story, everyone is selfish deep down.
cg037: Thank you.
Leonardo: Why? Isn't that already an anime?
