A/N: Yep, it's almost Christmas, which means it's time for another Christmas-related chapter! Hold on to your hats, everyone, there's gonna be surprises here! Merry Christmas, and happy Boxing Day to my eternal fan Ryuujin96!
While there was only a light dusting of snow at most, the weather was chilly today, but thankfully, Deku and Inko had the luxury of riding in an air-conditioned taxi on this, the holiest of all days of the year. They'd brought a couple of bags with them, one containing a few presents, the other a couple of desserts, for it was Christmas. Along the way, Deku couldn't help but take notice of Inko:
"Mom, you look nervous. Is everything OK?"
"Mostly. I just…this is my first time going to the Todorokis' house, and on Christmas of all days."
Deku smiled and put a hand on Inko's shoulder. "I understand your nervousness, but everything will be OK! Shoko's family is very friendly! Granted, she's had some issues with her father, but they're on better terms nowadays."
"Issues with her father? Like what?"
Deku chuckled nervously. "It's complicated. Why don't we just focus on how much fun we're going to have with the Todorokis?"
Inko stared at Deku briefly. Then, she nodded.
"You're right. If Shoko's friendly, then I shouldn't be so quick to worry about the rest of her family."
Deku patted Inko on the back. "That's the spirit!"
Soon enough, the taxi reached the Todoroki abode. Once Inko had paid the fare and collected the bags with Deku, the two Midoriyas headed for the house, which Inko couldn't help but take notice of:
"It's so traditional. It's been a while since I've been to a house like this."
Deku smiled. "Wait until you go inside!"
Upon reaching the front door, the Midoriyas took off their footwear, and Inko knocked on the door.
"I'm coming!" said a familiar female voice.
Shortly thereafter, the door opened, and…
"Hello Izuku!"
Rei gave Deku a big hug, which he gladly returned. While there was nothing like a hug from his own mother, there was just a special something about getting a hug from somebody else's mother, especially his girlfriend's mother. Soon enough, Rei let go.
"Hello to you too, Mrs. Todoroki."
Rei turned to Inko. "And you must be Izuku's mother!"
Inko smiled. "Call me Inko. You are…?"
"My name is Rei."
"Pleased to meet you, Rei!"
Inko and Rei bowed before each other.
"Please, come inside!" said Rei. "You two must be cold!"
Deku and Inko followed Rei inside, where she led them to the dining room. Naturally…
"DEKU! You made it!"
Todoroki ran over to Deku and gave him a big hug and kiss, which he gladly returned. He enjoyed her touch regardless, but knowing that it was Christmas made it even more special. After what seemed like ages, they let go, and Todoroki turned her attention to Inko:
"Good to see you too, Inko!"
Todoroki and Inko hugged each other, much in the same way that Rei and Deku had hugged. Like Deku, Todoroki also enjoyed the touch of her boyfriend's mother. Fuyumi was smiling, though Natsuo was a bit confused by the whole thing:
"Oh hey, Shoko, you never told us that Midoriya's mom was coming over."
Todoroki rubbed the back of her head. "Sorry! Anyways, Inko, this is my older sister Fuyumi, and that's my brother Natsuo."
"Hi, nice to meet you!"
Fuyumi and Inko bowed before each other.
"Nice to meet you."
Natsuo bowed before Inko as well.
"Please, have a seat!" said Fuyumi.
Deku and Inko sat at the table, which had a whole smorgasbord of food, which Inko took notice of:
"Wow, you folks certainly didn't spare any expense!"
Fuyumi giggled. "Well, I spent all morning cooking for everyone! Natsuo even helped out!"
Natsuo averted his gaze. "It was hard."
"Hey, are we gonna eat or are we gonna complain about how hard things are?" said Todoroki.
Deku giggled. "Shoko has a point!"
Thus, everybody served themselves some food and got down to eating. Inko let out a hearty "mmmm" as she bit into a piece of fried chicken.
"This fried chicken is so crispy and juicy! It might just be the best I've ever had!"
Fuyumi swallowed a piece of gyukatsu – Japanese-style fried beef. "Thank you!"
"I gotta hand it to Big Sis, she really knows her way around the kitchen." Natsuo took a bite of some eel.
Rei smiled. "That's one of the reasons why I'm so grateful to have been released from the hospital: I missed home cooking so much!"
"I love trying other people's cooking!" said Deku. "It makes me feel right at home!"
Todoroki slurped some zaru soba. "I know, right?"
"Fuyumi, Natsuo, do you mind if I ask you something?" said Inko.
Fuyumi smiled. "OK!"
"Go ahead," said Natsuo.
"See, my little Izuku has told me so much about Shoko, but he never really said anything about you two."
"I work as a teacher at a local elementary school," said Fuyumi. "The pay's not all that great, but working with children means more to me than words could ever say!"
"I'm going to college, studying to be a doctor," said Natsuo.
Inko smiled. "Fascinating! You two sound like you have bright futures ahead of you!"
Rei swallowed some of her fried chicken. "What about you, Inko? What's your story?"
Inko chuckled. "Oh, I'm just a simple housewife, doing cooking, cleaning and whatever else needs to be done around the house. I'm lucky that my husband sends us a portion of his salary each week."
Rei smiled. "That's more than my husband ever did for me."
Inko's look turned serious. "Sorry to hear he hasn't been so good to you."
Rei gave a dismissive hand flap. "Oh, don't worry about me too much! Ever since the end of the Paranormal Liberation War, things have gotten better between us!"
Natsuo groaned. "Mom, do we HAVE to talk about Dad today? You're ruining Christmas!"
Todoroki put a hand on Rei's shoulder. "As much as I've grown to like Daddy recently, I agree with Natsuo that this is still a rather sensitive subject."
Rei rubbed the back of her head. "Sorry, honey! I can be so forgetful sometimes!"
"Fuyumi, Natsuo, I still think it's interesting that you two can pursue careers outside of the hero field. Me, hero work is pretty much the only thing I've known." Deku took a bite of his katsudon.
Todoroki raised her hand. "Ditto!"
"Well, I get more satisfaction from helping children if my life's not on the line all the time," said Fuyumi.
Natsuo swallowed a piece of gyoza. "I'd much rather be helping people than hurting them."
Deku nodded. "Good points. Sometimes, I get so wrapped up in hero work that I forget how non-heroes live."
"You're not alone, Deku," said Todoroki. "That's part of why I've been trying to get out more, to broaden my worldview."
Rei smiled. "And I'm proud of you for doing so, Shoko!"
Just then, somebody knocked at the door.
"I'll get it!"
Rei got up from her seat and headed to the door. When she opened the door, she got quite the surprise:
"Merry Christmas, Rei."
Standing there was none other than Endeavor himself. Rei let out a slight gasp, not expecting him to show up just yet, especially after the big reveal that Dabi made. Nevertheless, once the initial shock wore off, she smiled:
"Merry Christmas to you too, Enji."
Rei gave Endeavor a big hug, which he gladly returned. After having such a fractured relationship for years, it just felt so healing for the two to be able to express affection for each other like this. Soon enough, they let go.
"Come on in," said Rei. "The Midoriyas are already here."
Endeavor raised an eyebrow. "Deku's family is here? Strange, I hadn't expected them. Nevertheless, they are most certainly welcome here."
Rei led Endeavor to the dining room. When the rest of the Todorokis saw him, reactions varied:
"DADDY!"
Todoroki ran up to him and gave him a big hug like the daddy's girl she was. While a little more restrained, Fuyumi smiled, knowing that relations had improved enough that he could once again share in this holy day with the bulk of his family. Natsuo, however, was less than impressed:
"That's it, I'm outta here."
Natsuo slammed his chopsticks on the table, got up and attempted to leave.
"Natsuo, where are you going!?" Rei reached for him.
"Out."
"Natsuo, you can't leave yet!" said Fuyumi. "We haven't even opened presents!"
"I don't give a shit! I'm NOT sharing Christmas with him!"
"Natsuo, please, don't do this to us!" said Endeavor. "I want this to be a happy occasion!"
"Stuff it, old man! You bring nothing but misery to this world!"
Seeing that Natsuo was not listening to anyone else, Todoroki grabbed him by the upper arm, much to his chagrin:
"Shoko, what are you doing!? Let me go!"
"Natsuo, I understand you're still hesitant to associate with Daddy, but he's been trying his best to become a better person, to atone for all the misery he's caused this family! Please, don't screw that up now!"
"What, like things aren't already screwed up?"
"Think about this: has this man not suffered his own kind of misery knowing what Toya did? Deep down inside, has he not felt like an empty, broken man who only did what he did because he had no healthy outlet for his emotional issues?"
"Oh, quit sticking up for him! We know what he did!"
"OK, if you won't listen to that, then listen to this: think about what Deku's done for our family! It was because of him that I learned to open my heart to other people! It was because of him that I found the courage to speak to Mom again after she gave me this!" Todoroki pointed to the scar over her left eye. "It was because of him that I was able to face Daddy again after the hell he put me through! It was because of him that I found the courage to forgive Daddy and try again with him! It was because of him that we're all here together as a family today! Lastly, it's because of him that we're all alive and able to enjoy this goddamn holiday! If you won't sit down and enjoy today with us for Daddy's sake, then please, enjoy it for my loving boyfriend's sake!"
Natsuo looked at Todoroki, who was giving him a death glare, and then over at Deku, who was forming tears in his eyes. As much as Natsuo was hesitant to forgive Endeavor, the Midoriyas were honored guests, and he couldn't bring himself to insult them like this, so he sighed.
"All right, Shoko, you win. I'll tolerate his presence, but only for now."
Todoroki smiled. "I knew you'd see things my way!"
Todoroki huggled Natsuo, who returned the gesture. Inko, Rei, Deku and Fuyumi let out a collective "awww" when they saw this.
"Speaking of the Midoriyas, I have a little surprise for them." Endeavor turned to look over his shoulder. "Hisashi!"
Shortly thereafter, another man stepped in: Hisashi Midoriya. He bore a good resemblance to Deku, barring the short, curly green hair and the bushy Magnum-esque moustache. Deku and Inko gasped when they saw him.
"DAD!"
"HONEY BEAR!"
Deku and Inko bolted out of their seats and cried as they gave Hisashi a big hug. After years of him being placed on an overseas assignment, not knowing if he'd ever return home, Deku and Inko were happy beyond words to see that the Midoriya patriarch was home in time for the holidays. To them, it was a gift greater than anything the Three Wise Men could ever have brought. Rei, Todoroki and Fuyumi let out a collective "awww" as they beheld how such a miracle had been bestowed upon the Midoriyas. Even Natsuo and Endeavor couldn't help but smile. Overall, this was shaping up to be the best Christmas not just for the Midoriyas, but for the Todorokis as well. Even after Deku and Inko stopped producing rivers of tears, they kept hugging Hisashi. He was, after all, the family patriarch, and it had been ages since they'd last seen him. He smiled, knowing that they still cared for him.
"Inko, Izuku, I'm glad you two are so happy to see me, but you can let go now. You're crushing my windpipe!"
"Sorry!"
Deku and Inko let go.
"Dad, there's somebody special I'd like to introduce you to," said Deku. "Dad, this is my girlfriend, Shoko Todoroki. Shoko, this is my father."
Todoroki smiled. "Pleased to meet you at last, Mr. Midoriya!"
"The pleasure is likewise, but please, call me Hisashi!"
Todoroki and Hisashi bowed before each other.
"Well, Izuku, you found quite the catch!" said Hisashi.
Deku blushed. "Dad…!"
Todoroki blushed as well, but nevertheless smiled. "Wow, you're very forward, Hisashi! Anyways, why don't we all…"
"Hold on a second!" said Endeavor.
Deku raised an eyebrow. "What's going on, Endeav…"
"Please, Izuku, call me Enji when I'm off-duty."
Deku nodded. "Right."
"Anyways, now that we're all here, I have something I wanted to share with everybody…"
"What?" said the Midoriyas and other Todorokis in unison.
"I'd been doing some research on the Todoroki family tree, and I found that my great-great-great-grandfather Kousuke Todoroki…" Endeavor turned to the children. "…that is, your great-great-great-great-grandfather – fathered two children, my great-great-grandfather Shun Todoroki and my great-great-grandmother Satsuki Todoroki, but more importantly my great-great-great-aunt Rin Todoroki."
"But why's our great-great-great-great-aunt so important?" asked Natsuo.
"Because, when she was 21, she married a man named Yuuta Midoriya and had three children with him. Yuuta is Izuku's great-great-great-grandfather. So yes, the Midoriyas and the Todorokis are related."
"WHAT!?" exclaimed everyone else.
In particular, Deku and Todoroki looked at each other with shock. All this time, they'd been dating and not once had they realized that they were related, even if by a certain distance. Todoroki even wondered about the whole thing:
"Deku, knowing this…should we even be dating each other?"
Deku showed a look of confusion and concern on his face. He had been reading Endeavor while the man was talking about family relations, and all his signals suggested that he was being truthful about this connection. However, the look on his face grew awash with determination as he gave his answer:
"Shoko, it doesn't matter. Even if we are connected by a common ancestor, I'm still going to keep being in a relationship with you. You've given me love like nobody else has, and I want to keep giving the same to you. Besides, it's not like we're close cousins…right?"
Todoroki gave a flat stare to Deku as she contemplated his words. Then, she smiled:
"Oh, what the heck! You make a very good point!"
Deku and Todoroki gave each other another hug and kiss, which elicited another "awww" from everybody. Soon enough, after they broke away, Todoroki turned to everybody else:
"All right, who wants to get together for the Christmas photo?"
Everyone answered affirmatively, and they all gathered together, which went smoothly except for one thing:
"Daddy, please get in the back!" said Todoroki. "You're bigger than everybody else!"
"As you wish, Shoko."
After everybody was in position, Todoroki set up her phone on a little tripod so she could use the timer on the phone's camera. Then, after setting the timer, she headed back to the rest of them and wrapped an arm around Deku for the photo.
"All right, smile, everybody!" said Todoroki.
Everybody put on their best smiles and held still as the picture was taken. For years, even decades afterwards, members of the Midoriyas and Todorokis would be talking about this one particular Christmas.
A/N: If I made any math errors regarding the number of "greats" for each family member, I apologize.
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
