Summary: Kagome wasn't the type to be fazed by a bit of strangeness here and there. Perhaps she's just as strange since her touch doesn't trigger the Sohma's curse. It was something that left Yuki utterly befuddled. Even though secrets and scars are shared, there are still parts hidden below the surface. It might just be the thing that pulls them closer together.
Pairing: Yuki/Kagome
Disclaimer: I do not own either series. Each belongs to their rightful owners.
Prologue
Her decision had been for the better. Or, that was the thought she clung to. Still, regardless of that notion, it hadn't been as easy as she'd hoped. Coming home for good, all it seemed to do was make her feel even more out of place as she struggled to adjust back to a normal, demon-free life.
She sat in class, balancing her chin on the back of her hand as she gazed out the window to her side. The day was going to be over, soon. All she had to do was tough it out through this math lesson, and then she'd be free to go meet up with her friends. She stifled a sigh and turned her head back to the front of the room, absentmindedly copying down the formulas written on the board before she could forget.
Uneventful, slow, grueling…
Those were just a few words the raven-haired miko could use to describe the day thus far. There were more, of course, but she refrained from letting them soak in her mind as she feigned paying attention.
The bell rang, interrupting the monotone monologue of the teacher. Others around her began packing up their books and papers, and she was no different.
She sighed and shook her head. A part of her was hopeful for something more exciting, but she also knew that was a hard order to fulfill after her track record. Her hand came up as a brief afterthought floated through her head. Fingers toyed with the pink jewel around her neck as she walked down the hallways. By now, it'd become mostly empty, save for a few stragglers departing or finding their way to their afterschool clubs.
Kagome turned the corner, and, as she did, she felt the chain around her neck snap. Her hand fumbled a bit as she attempted to catch the pink jewel before it could slip off the chain, but she didn't react swiftly enough. It fell to the ground, clattering noisily as it rolled down the hall a bit.
"Oh, come on," she huffed as she eyed where it'd rolled to with a mild gleam of annoyance flashing through sapphire-blue eyes. She moved to go collect it, but she hadn't made it more than a few steps before someone leaving one of the classrooms paused beside it.
She stole a glimpse of him. He wasn't someone she knew well. She knew his name, of course, but how could she not? He had quite the fan club of girls head over heels for him- all of which she avoided like a plague.
Sure, he was attractive, but she couldn't wrap her head around the logic of some of them when it came to him. After all, she was more intrigued by the strange aura that seemed to cling to him. It was entirely unfamiliar to her and hard to read. It didn't matter if he was right beside her or on the other side of the school…- She just couldn't get a decent understanding of it. She wasn't sure what to think of it, and, by association, what to think of him.
"Is this yours?"
Kagome blinked as she was pulled from her thoughts by a soft voice. She let her gaze lift, briefly landing on the pink jewel before they finally met a pair of gray trained on her. In the back of her mind, she realized this was the first time they'd actually interacted with each other. A soft smile appeared on her face as she nodded. There was a faint shift in his aura, one that she noticed but didn't understand.
"Yeah," she responded as she stepped closer, holding out her own hand so she could take the offered bauble from him. He felt warm as the tips of her fingers grazed his palm. She sighed and shook her head, lifting her other hand so she could eye the snapped chain with a mildly annoyed glare. "Well, at least it didn't break in a worse place…" she muttered under her breath. It was meant mostly for her own ears, but she didn't mind that he'd overheard. "Thanks for returning it!" she added as an afterthought, letting her gaze drift back up to his face, a beaming smile replacing her prior glare.
"It's nothing," he responded. "I don't think we've met before, have we?" he commented a second later. Kagome let out a faint, curious hum, tilting her head to the side in an innocent gesture. She blinked owlishly before shaking her head.
"Not that I know of," she responded. "I just recently got settled into going to school," she added shortly after. After all the chaos of the well and time-traveling, she was only just now able to fall into a routine with her first year of high school. "You can just call me Kagome," she stated then. "I don't typically do the whole formality thing."
"Sohma Yuki," he returned her name with his own, even though there was no need. She nodded, stifling a laugh.
"It's kinda hard not to know your name, you know," she remarked. Her tone was light, a friendly light in her eyes. "Your fan club blathers about you all the time."
A figure rushing down the hall ran into her, knocking her to the side. She stumbled forward and into Yuki, unable to catch herself quick enough to maintain her balance. He tensed up as she landed against his chest. The reason why was lost on her, and she soon took a few steps back once she'd been able to.
She could feel the surprise that had seeped into his aura, and she spared a curious look up at his face. Honestly…- The more time she spent with him, the more confusion she got. She refrained from shaking her head as she shoved the jewel into the pocket of her skirt, taking another step away from him.
"I should be on my way now," she stated as she held a hand up to wave. "It was nice to have a chance to talk to you, Yuki-kun!" she added a second later.
"I-I…" He paused at first. He'd taken a step to follow her, only to stop a second later. "Yeah, you too," he eventually said. There was something in his voice that sparked her interest.
"See you around!" Kagome called as she turned to leave.

As she walked away, he was still frozen in place. His heart was still pounding wildly in his chest. He wouldn't have been surprised if she'd managed to hear it when she was so close.
At the thought of it, he was still stunned.
How come the curse didn't react to her? She had definitely gotten close enough for it to trigger. He could still feel her warmth and the lingering weight against him.
A few minutes passed, and he was still standing still, gaze trained on the spot she'd been standing in.
"See you around!"
He couldn't help but hope that notion turned out to be true. Among his confusion and curiosities, he had hope of running into the radiant girl again, and soon.
Auroua-chan: Gonna end this chapter here. The following ones will be a bit longer.
Kagome had a run-in with Yuki (literally) and the outcome wasn't the one he'd been expecting. She's a strange girl, for certain. Especially since the curse doesn't react to her.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope I caught all the errors before posting. If not, apologies.
