Chapter Ten
Hermione was practically choking on the tension in the Great Hall at breakfast the next morning. Harry was doing his best to avoid Ginny and Dean, Hermione was refusing to even acknowledge Ron, Ron was trying to spend time with Harry, and Harry was using Hermione as an emotional crutch. Ron had finally realized that Hermione was actively avoiding him and in his oblivious state didn't realize that Harry was upset about Ginny and Dean so he just figured that his best friend was avoiding him as well. Hermione could tell that Ron was going to snap soon and she was sure it wasn't going to be pretty when he did.
Harry followed Hermione around all day. They sat together at every class, at every meal, and he wasn't more than a foot from her when walking between classes.
Midway through the day Harry pulled Hermione into an unused classroom. "We need to talk," He said as he shut the door. Hermione nodded and sat on an old desk, figuring he wanted to talk about Ginny. "Do you really think you and Ron would work as a couple." Hermione nearly choked, she wasn't prepared for that question. She took a breath and gathered her thoughts. If she thought about it, no she didn't think they would work together. Their personalities were too different. But if she didn't end up with Ron who would want her? "I don't know," She finally answered. "Maybe we wouldn't have but I wanted to try anyway." Harry nods before Hermione continues, "I'm not even jealous of Lavender. I'm just mad that the second she started showing interest in him he started treating us like scrap potions ingredients."
"Yeah he has been pretty bad about that." Harry agreed, "but maybe that can be resolved with a conversation and not avoiding him?"
She sighed, she knew he was right but she hated being the one to apologize first. It was always her. "I guess your right." Harry smiled, "Of course I'm right, I'm always right." Hermione snorted and bumped his shoulder with hers. "I'll talk to him after class." Harry nodded and the two left the classroom, making their way down to the kitchens to sneak a snack before their next class.
After her last class Hermione made her way to the common room, fully prepared to make up with Ron. She ducked through the portrait hole and found him mid conversation with Dean and Seamus. She was about to interrupt when she heard what he was saying. "The constant moping is just sad really."Ron said, "She's pathetic." Hermione stopped in her tracks. He was talking about her. "And it's not like I would've wanted to be with her anyway, she too boring." Her stomach lurched at what he was saying and she felt tears prickle at the back of her eyes. "Her idea of a date would be finishing Potions homework and doing extra credit in the library." Ron then put on a high pitched voice, "I can't be with someone with such low grade Ronald, you'll ruin my reputation. You have to do better." He mocked. It was then that Dean noticed Hermione standing behind them. His eyes went wide, cause Ron to look behind him. Hermione stood there with tears running down her cheeks. "'Mione I-" She didn't let him finish. She turned and ran from the common room, as she made it through the portrait hole she nearly bumped into Harry. "'Mione, what's wrong?" He asked. All she did was shake her head before sprinting down the hall.
