Hazel shook her head thoughtfully. Everything was absolute bullshit without Gus. It wasn't fair. She didn't understand.
"Hazel Grace."
It was the whisper of a word.
"Wh-what's going on," she whispered back.
"I love you," the voice said.
Hazel opened her eyes and saw Gus with his goofy smile. Now though he seemed different. For one thing, he had both his legs. For another, he was… special.
"I love you too," she said, "Everything is absolute bullshit without you with me."
Gus sat down and wiped away her tears with his thumb.
"Oh Hazel," he said kissing her, "You know I am always with you."
"If I had understood," Hazel began.
She paused.
"I'm a grenade," she said, "I'm where I am now because I was an idiot."
"You're not an idiot," Gus told her taking her hand, "You understood a lot more than you give yourself credit for."
She breaks down into heaping sobs. Without hesitation, he wraps his arms around her and holds her tight. He rubs her back gently.
"Come on Hazel Grace," he says as he takes her hand.
"Where are we going," Hazel asks.
"Do you think a little thing like the death of both of us could stop me from being with you," Gus says laughing, "My world has been hell without you. It's literally been hell without you."
Hazel laughed without humor.
"So you must have been in my world," she said sarcastically.
"I convinced GOD to let you into my world," Gus said.
Perhaps she was in shock. She stared at him.
"He agreed to that?"
"Of course Hazel Grace," Gus replied, "All I had to do was relive the worst day ever."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"You… you mean-," she stammered.
Gus grinned.
"It was absolutely worth it," he said putting his hands on her shoulders.
"What day w-"
Before she could say any more, he kissed her and looked into her eyes. His expression changed. It was still gentle and kind, but it was also serious. She could see what he was talking about.
"I caused you to suffer again," she said breaking down.
"No Hazel Grace," Gus replied, "I chose to suffer again because it would end your suffering. I love you. I would do anything for you."
The waterworks started again. Once again Gus wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly. Suddenly the world swayed and Hazel found herself in another world.
"Is this… Somewhere with a capital S," Hazel asked.
"This is Heaven," Gus told her.
"You mean I'm in heaven?" Hazel exclaimed.
"Nothing gets past you does it," Gus laughed, his eyes crinkling.
"I… actually belong here?"
"Everything here was absolute bullshit without you," Gus said.
"He loves you," GOD told Hazel, "You know he-"
"She knows," Gus replied as Hazel nodded.
