In the small island of Patch there situated a small modest and unassuming town with the same name, a quite and peaceful place. And a nice place to visit in the summer or fall. And other than that, nothing. At least that's how it goes according to one of the locals going by the name of Yang Xiao Long, Living alone with her father.
Now sitting in her seat inside their classroom, absentmindedly not listening to the teacher. Preferring to listen to the music on her ear pods. And chewing gum in her mouth and looking outside the window beside her, not noticing the teacher walking behind her and yanking both ear pods off her ear.
"And Ms. Xiao-Long which dynasty happened to create the famous terracotta warriors that can be found in China?" Asked Doctor Oobleck. The history teacher in charge of the class, "Anytime now Ms. Xiao-Long." Doctor Oobleck said. Leaving Yang with her mouth open and her eyes darting left and right hoping for someone to give her the answer, but she got nothing. "Alright it would seem that Ms. Xiao-Long doesn't have the answer, would someone raise their hand to tell me."
Said the doctor and then right there, Weiss Schnee raised her hand. "The Chinese Qin dynasty which started from 221 BCE and lasted until 201 BCE, and was created after the emperor Qin Shihuang wanted to have his soldiers safe guard him even in death in his tomb. And thus created the statues that we see today." Said Weiss with a smug smirk, while giving Yang a shit eating look as the white haired glanced at the blond girls direction. "Correct Ms. Schnee, and if Ms. Xiao-Long here decided to pay attention to class and read the material. She too would've answered correctly."
Doctor Oobleck said as he looked down at Yang, then the school bell rang indicating the end of class. "And it would seem that that's all the time we have, see you next week and don't forget to pass your assignments next Monday from page 137 to page 139. Right here at my desk. And have a nice weekend" Their teacher said as he walked to his desk, before the students put their things In their bags and walk out. "And Ms. Xiao-Long do please remain." Yang heard her teacher say, as she neared the exit door.
Letting out a sigh Yang turned back and shrugged her shoulders, "What's up doc?" She said casually as she approached his desk. Oobleck then turned from his stack of papers before he looked at Yang, "Look Ms. Xiao-Long I have to be frank with you, I implore you to at least listen to my class. I know that you're a brilliant child but you're holding yourself back." Oobleck told Yang, "Before you say something I just want to ask, I've seen your grades from your previous school before you transfered here to us a year ago. And I was shocked to know that you were a straight A honer student, so what changed?" He continued as he leaned in on his desk as he asked the question.
"Look teach, I know that teachers are supposed to look after their students but. Where's this coming from?" Yang replied with her own question, "I just want to know why a brilliant student like you is wasting your potential." Hearing that answer shrugged, and raised a brow. "No offense Mr. Oobleck, I think I need to go. I still have chores to do back home" Yang shook her head before she left the room in a huff, Leaving Oobleck alone in his classroom.
As she walked passed the door, Oobleck let out another sigh. As he put his hands on his waist "Kids these days, why do they have to be so problematic..." He muttered to himself while shaking his head before sitting back down.
Half an hour later, Yang finds herself walking in the streets of the suburbs where she lives. Navigating her way back to her home with her head hung low, not paying attention to the road ahead. Until she turned the corned bumped into someone and they both fell down.
"Oof!" Yang let out as her posterior touched the hard pavement. "Hey watch it!" She said, as she looked towards the person she bumped into. A teen the same age as her. Wearing baggy close and short light blonde hair and glasses on his face, "Sorry! I wasn't watching where I'm going!." The blond in front of her said as he quickly picked up his fallen objects off of the ground. "Are you alright? I hope I didn't leave any injury."
Slowly she stood up and dusted herself, "I'm fine. Just look around next time" she said before she left and continued her way home. A simple upper middle class house in an upper class neighborhood, a typical one that you'd see in tv shows like Modern family or Married with children. As she arrived at her house and opened the door, she was greeted by her father as she entered.
"Hey sweetie, how was school today?" Tai asked as he saw her daughter enter the house. "Fine I guess" she answered as she strolled into the kitchen and poured herself an orange juice from a cartoon from the fridge, "I see... Anyway I got a call from one of your teachers today, Mr Port if I remember correctly. He said that you were spacing out in class again. Is everything alright?" Her father asked her from their living room seat, putting her glass down on the counter. "Yeah I was just stressed about school is all, No biggie." Yang replied with an excuse.
"Alright... Just tell me if there's anything wrong." Tai replied back to his daughter, not believing her entirely. "Yeah sure dad, If you need me I'll be in my room." He heard his daughter say as she went passed behind the couch where he sat, and hearing her foot steps as she walked upstairs to her room. Closing the door behind her she put her bag on the floor and flopped on her bed face first,"School sucks..." Yang muttered as she curled up hugging one of her pillows.
She stayed that way for a few moments, before her gaze turned itself towards a picture frame on her night stand. Sitting up she grabbed it, "Mom..." She once again muttered as she saw the photo inside. It was a photo of her mother alongside her father and with her in the middle when she was still ten years old. She looked so happy then, smiling like nothing else in the world mattered.
Yang had a soft smile on her face seeing the old photo. Before it vanished quickly as it came as she heard a knock on her door, "Yang hey it's me. I'm thinking that we should order take out for dinner, do you want Filipino or Chinese?" She heard her father say from behind the door. "Oh uh... - Chinese I guess?" Yang replied, "Ok I'll call on you again when it's arrived." Her father replied, she can hear his footsteps as he left back down stairs.
The take out food order arrived half an hour later, now Yang and Tai sat at the dinner table. The dinner was silent and uneventful as if there's a disconnect between the two of them. "Your aunt Summer just called, she said that she's coming here with Ruby and Qrow next week." Tai said as he saw Yang grab a piece of General Tsu's chicken with her chopstick, "Really? That's nice... Great really" Yang replied flatly before putting the chicken in her mouth.
Tai let out a sigh hearing that "Look Yang I know that it-" he tried to say but stopped when he saw Yang put down her chopsticks, "Dad just please... I don't wanna talk about it." Yang said mewling on her teeth while looking down at the table, letting out another sigh Tai looked at her daughter. "Yang we won't solve anything if we don't talk about it, look I know what it feels like. Your mother -Raven, was a wonderful woman the love of my life, but it has been two years since the accident. We - you have to move one, it's what she would've wanted."
Just as he finished saying that the sound of a wooden chair scraping he ground echoed in the kitchen dining room, "You don't get to say that about my own mother, I know that it's been two years. But when it happened it didn't take you a month to move on, that alone says a lot about you being a good husband. Makes you wonder if you really did love her at all." Yang spat out leaning on the table, her father stared at her with wide eyes marred with shock. Realizing what she said she leaned back, "I-... I need some fresh air." She said as she ran out of the house leaving her father to blink and look towards a photo hanged next to the kitchen entrance.
"Raven... What am I supposed to do with her?." He asked the photo of his wife's gently smiling face. Before he turned to look towards the open front door with worry in his face. "Come back home safe..." He said. And pulled out a phone and dialed a number.
It has been minutes since Yang ran out of their house, now she found herself at the local playground six blocks away from her home. Sitting in one of the swings alone in the dark, "Why did I say that? God I suck" Yang complained to herself as she rocked the swing. "Maybe I should just go home and apologize?" She asked herself. The thoughts of just going home ran through her head once again passing the time as she spaced out.
Not noticing a dark figure sneaking up behind her with something in their hand, and slowly but surely. They crept up behind Yang who felt a sudden tingling in her spine like something bad is about to happen, she tried to turn around but it was too late as a piece of cloth was shoved into her face and it smelled rancid. She tried to scream and shout out for help but it was muffled by the cloth in her mouth blocking any noise that's coming out, and at the same time she kicked and punched around but to no avail.
It wasn't long until she noticed that she's starting to get dizzy, and black spots danced around her vision realizing that the rancid smell she smelled on the cloth must've been a sleep inducing drug. So she tried mustering any final strength she could, but before she can hear attacker grunting loudly before dropping her to the ground with an audible thud noise as she landed. As she lay there on the ground with seemingly around her looking like a blur, her hazy gaze tried to focus towards where she felt her attacker must've gone when they let her go.
But all she can was someones feet wearing what she could've guessed as someone's right foot black jeans and a blue sneaker close to her face as moments after everything went dark, and the last thing she could remember is being lifted off the ground before everything went blank.
