Alphabet Soup – Remember

She woke up in a ditch on some backroad in New York. She didn't know how she got there. She didn't know anything, including her name. She searched her jacket, she had no identification on her, no cell phone, no wallet. She had nothing that could help her identify herself.

The only reason she knew she was on a backroad in New York was because of the sign she walked up to a few hundred feet from where she had woken up. She was hungry and cold.

All she knew for sure was that she had a splitting headache. She continued walking hoping that she would run across a car soon. She turned the corner and bumped into a woman walking with a young boy. "Oh, excuse me," she quickly said and started to walk away.

The woman grabbed her arm and asked, "Are you okay? You looked like you are lost."

"I guess I am. I just woke up in that alley over there and I don't remember anything. I don't seem to have any identification on me. I do not know my name or where I am. I do have quite the headache though."

"Mom, maybe we should take her to the station once Alex returns." The little boy stated.

"Yes, Noah, that might be a good idea. Are you injured?"

"I don't seem to be injured, but what station? I am sorry. I don't know you and I am not sure I should be going anywhere with you." The confused lady stated as she held out her hand and it had blood on it."

"It is okay. I am Captain Olivia Benson with the NYPD." Olivia pulled out her badge and showed it to her. She then continued, "This is my son, Noah. My wife, Alex is in this store and should be walking out any moment. She wanted to pick up my Christmas gift. She has been in court and her proceedings ran long today." Oliva said as she smiled at the confused woman and took her hand in hers to see the blood. She then noticed a small cut on the side of Jane's head just above her ear.

"Wife," the confused woman looked at her ring finger on her left hand and saw a ring. "I must be someone's wife as well, but I don't remember. Crap, I don't remember anything."

"It's okay, we can help you figure this out. If you come to the precinct with us, we can run your fingerprints through our database and see if we can figure out who you are. Plus, we need to get that cut on your head looked at."

The woman smiled, "That would be great. My family must be wondering where I am. I am not sure how long I was in that alley."

"My mom is great at helping people." Noah said as Alex walked out of the store.

"Jane, what are you doing here?" Alex asked the confused woman.

"Who is Jane?" the confused woman looked around to see if someone else had joined them.

"You are Jane. Sergeant Jane Rizzoli, from Boston PD. Liv, what is going on?" Alex asked Olivia.

"Babe, she just woke up in that alley and she doesn't remember who she is or why she is here. She doesn't have any ID on her." Olivia told Alex.

"Liv, this isn't good. Jane is a witness in my case. She had just started her testimony when the judge said we will continue tomorrow. Jane left the courthouse with her wife a few hours ago." Alex continued.

"Wife, I have a wife?" Jane asked.

"Yes, Jane. You are married to Dr. Maura Isles, the Chief, Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Where is Maura?"

"I don't know. I don't know anything." Jane said in a panic.

"Liv, let's get Jane down to the station or back to our apartment so we can find out what is going on." Alex told Olivia as Olivia motioned for Jane to follow them as they went to their SVU to go back to the precinct. Olivia thought the precinct would be better. While she had waited for Alex, they had looked over the alley and did not see anything suspicious.

At the precinct Olivia asked a few uniformed officers to assist her. She had them look up Maura's phone numbers. Olivia stepped into her office and called BPD Homicide. Detective Barry Frost answered the phone, "Homicide, Frost, how may I help you?"

"Detective Frost, this is Captain Benson from NYPD SVU."

"How can I help you, Captain Benson?" Frost replied.

Captain Benson politely asked him, "Do you work with Sergeant Rizzoli?"

"Yes, she is my sergeant. She is in New York right giving testimony on one of her old homicide cases."

She then asked him, "Is your captain or lieutenant available?"

"Yes, I will patch you through to our captain, Captain Simpson." Frost didn't mess with the lieutenant. This was a well-respected NYPD Captain calling and he knew that if she was calling something was wrong.

"Captain Simpson speaking, how may I help you, Captain Benson?"

Olivia explained what had happened and asked for Maura's contact information. Captain Simpson patched their call into Maura's number and there was no answer on Maura's cell phone. He patched them through to her NY apartment and still no answer. "Hold on Captain, let me get Detective Frost in here, he is a whiz with computers and he can track their cell phones."

Captain Simpson told his assistant to get Frost and within three minutes Frost and his computer were in the Captain's officer pinging Jane and Maura's cellphones. The captain used his cell phone and called the security office of Maura's apartment complex. He asked for time of arrival and departure information for both Jane and Maura.

A few minutes later Frost informed the captain, "Sorry sir, both of their cell phones seem to be pinging from their last known location. The alley for Jane's and the apartment for Dr. Isles."

"Thanks Detective Frost." The Captain said as Frost picked up his computer and left the office.

"Captain Benson, as you heard the cell phones are not going to help us. I know Dr. Isles loves luxury. Her apartment complex has a doorman and top of the line security. I have already contacted her apartment complex and they are pulling together the footage of Jane and Maura's arrivals and departures. I will give you her security manager's number and you can have your people follow up on that. Please keep me in the loop as to the whereabouts of Dr. Isles and the status of Sergeant Rizzoli."

"Yes, Captain Simpson, I will do that. Thank you for your assistance. I will be in touch." Before Olivia hung up, she gave the captain her contact information. She then had one of her trusted uniformed officers escort Alex and Jane to the hospital. They needed to figure out why Jane had no memory. Alex didn't want to let Jane out of her sight. Even though Jane could not continue her testimony Alex still wanted to make sure that Jane was okay. She also wanted to find out Maura's whereabouts.

Olivia wondered if Dr. Isles had been abducted. Jane didn't know if Maura was with her or not. Jane was upset that she couldn't help Olivia sort any of this out. Jane didn't even remember her wife or the fact that she was a police officer.

It didn't take long for Olivia to find the CCTV footage of Maura and Jane being taken from outside of their apartment building. The officer had followed the van that took them and followed it to where Jane was dumped.

They found the van a few miles away abandoned. Apparently, it had ran out of gas. The two masked men had placed Maura up behind some garbage cans and fled. Maura was found unconscious with a broken right leg and some scratches to her arms and face, but otherwise she was okay. She didn't remember anything after they had abducted her but she did remember who she was and that she had come to New York with Jane so that Jane could testify in the court case.

"Where is my wife? I want to see my wife!" Maura shouted at the officers.

"Dr. Isles, your wife is with Captain Benson, we will take you to her." The officer didn't want to tell her that her wife had no memory. She would let Captain Benson handle that. The officer called Captain Benson who instructed her to go with Dr. Isles to the hospital and she would meet them there.

The officer rode in the ambulance with Dr. Isles and stayed with her until she was relieved by Captain Benson. "Hello, Dr. Isles, I am Captain Benson." Olivia said as Maura was being treated in the emergency room.

"Where is my wife? I was told that she is with you." Maura stated as she glared at Captain Benson.

"She is. Once the doctor has released you, I will take you to her."

Olivia was interrupted. "What do you mean, you will take me to her, is she okay? What happened to her?"

"Calm down, Dr. Isles."

Once again Maura interrupted her. "Don't tell me to calm down. I want to see my wife, right now."

"Okay, okay, I will go get her."

"Sorry! Thank you, Captain Benson. I have been so worried about her. Before I blacked out, they gave her a pretty good blow to the head with the butt of a hand gun."

Olivia reached over and stroked Maura's arm. "I will go get her." Olivia left and went to find Jane and Alex.

The doctor had just finished his examination of Jane. "It appears as though you have taken a pretty good blow to the head. I would suggest that you take it easy for a few days. I am confident that this is just a temporary bout of amnesia and that within a few hours you will have all of your memory back."

"Thank you, doctor." Jane said as Alex helped her stand up.

"I guess I am at your mercy now Alex." Jane said as she smiled at Alex. Just then Olivia walked in to say that Maura wants to see Jane. Alex and Olivia both looked at each other not quite sure how Maura was going to react to Jane not remembering her.

Olivia led Alex and Jane to the ER where Maura was still be treated. Olivia and Alex were both surprised when Jane walked up and gave Maura a kiss on the lips and said, "Hey, Maur, I am so happy to see you."

"Jane, I was so worried about you."

"Jane, you remember Maura?" Olivia asked.

"Why wouldn't I remember my girlfriend." Jane replied.

"Girlfriend, Jane I am your wife." Maura told a confused looking Jane.

Olivia spent the next twenty minutes explaining to the couple what had happened. Jane didn't remember anything from the last two years prior to meeting Olivia. Olivia was happy that some of Jane's memory had returned. Jane didn't remember her wedding to Maura one and a half years ago. Maura was confident that Jane would continue to remember things. She was just thankful that Jane now remembered who she was. Being her girlfriend was better than being a complete stranger.

Jane was able to complete her testimony as the case was from over five years ago and that part of memory was still intact. Because of Maura's statement of the crime, they were able to lock up the two suspects that the NYPD had captured by following them on the CCTV video footage.

It was just a random robbery gone bad. The two suspects knew that the majority of people that lived in that apartment complex had a great deal of money and they had hoped to find jewelry and money on the two women. They were surprised when they found Jane's gun and badge. One of the suspects took the gun and hit Jane over the head with it and then took everything out of her pockets.

The other suspect had given Maura a shot of a numbing agent to knock her out while they robbed her. They dumped Jane first and then were going to take Maura further but they had run out of gas. They took all of Maura's jewelry and left her behind some garbage cans and fled the scene.

Jane and Maura were happy to return to their Beacon Hill home knowing that they were lucky, things could have ended quite differently. They also had three new friends in Manhattan, Olivia, Alex and Noah. It took Jane another six months to fully gain all of her memory back. Although it was random, patrols of the neighborhood that their apartment complex was located had increased. NYPD did not want their BPD friends to suffer like that ever again.
