I don't own these characters. Disney/ABC does.
A/N: this is possibly the last story in the Who We Are universe. Just wanted to explain how Ruby, Dorothy, and Belle got together. Hope you like it.
Care, Giving
1: Help Is On The Way
Ruby knew Gold's trial would be hard on Belle, even though she had not been allowed to sit through it. She was a witness, after all, like everyone else who attended Emma and Regina's wedding. Hard to believe that was a year ago. Emma and Regina had twins now, almost five months old. And Belle was alone. Except, not really. Ruby made sure of that. Well, Ruby and the rest of their found family.
They all made it their business to keep Belle busy and spend time with her. Belle did not seem too burdened until the trial started. Then, there was an obvious weight on her, slowly crushing her under a guilt she should not carry. And now it would be worse, even though it should be better.
Rumplestiltskin, aka Mister Gold, aka the Dark One, had been found guilty of attempted murder, among a slew of other charges. Belle would carry that as if she was guilty as well. Ruby and Emma planned for a distraction before the verdict even came in. The only problem was that it was glaringly obvious what they were doing.
Game Day was born in Emma's mind, but Ruby thought it was an amazing idea and helped her plan it out. They would all get together at the mansion after work and play board games well into the night. This was good because none of them got to experience board games as intended. Plus, Regina had tons of good booze and she agreed to bake!
Ruby went to the library to pick up Belle at 4:45, expecting a fight. They could have fifteen minutes of fight time, but at five the library closed and Belle would be coming with her, simple as that. She would not leave Belle to wallow over Gold in that drafty pawn shop, as Belle always retreated there after something happened in the trial. There she was surrounded by him, darkness, and stolen or bargained memories and she allowed it all to consume her bit by bit. It was like Gold was still victimizing her.
"Hey, Belle, ready to go?" Ruby called as she stepped into the library. It always smelled nice in there now, despite the age of many of the books and whatever the hell was going on in the basement.
Belle wasted no time shushing her loudly from her perch at the main desk. "Ruby, you're being too loud, as usual."
"Sorry," Ruby said because it was expected, not because she meant it. They both knew she would be loud in the library again. "Ready for games?" She rubbed her palms together.
Belle glanced away. "I really should sort things out here."
Ruby snorted, waving that away. "You can do that later. This is way better. And we both know you could use some fun after everything."
"Ruby…" The way her shoulders dropped and she glanced away was heartbreaking.
"The trial was hard on you." Ruby stepped closer and took Belle's hand. There was a slight roughness there, the hints of Belle trying to live her life of adventure and just not quite getting there. "Now is the time to let go and start rebuilding."
Belle frowned. "Now isn't the time to be around the people Rumple tried to kill."
Ruby scoffed. "You've been around them. That's your family, actually, and we all want you there."
Belle yanked her hand back. "I don't understand why."
"Because you're not him, first and foremost. We all understand that. We don't blame you for anything he did. We also don't fault you for being with him. We've all made mistakes in love."
Belle sucked her teeth. "This bad?"
Ruby snorted. "Maleficent is currently dating Zelena." It was a joke and it did not get as much as a smile out of Belle. This was going to be tough. That was comedy gold.
"I was practically complicit in his actions."
Ruby arched an eyebrow. "Because you believed in him?"
"I enabled him."
"You're kidding. He was doing his bullshit long before you showed up and just added you to the list of people he's manipulated and screwed over. He kept you around because you made him feel good and he gaslit you, so you'd stick around to make him feel good. No one faults you for that, especially not the family."
Belle frowned, the picture of misery. "Maybe I fault me."
"And I'm saying you shouldn't. He's not your responsibility. We all know you did your best with him. You tried to bring out the good in him. You're stronger than most for trying for so long."
Belle sucked her teeth and her eyes blazed for a moment. "Stronger or stupider?" Her tone was harsh.
"Hey!" Ruby got in her face. "You're not allowed to call my friend stupid for loving someone, believing in someone, and trying to bring out the best in someone. Those are all admirable qualities. None of us want you to lose those."
"I enabled him."
Ruby took both of Belle's hands and held them in a gentle grip. "He'd have done the same thing without you there. His actions are his own. You're not stupid for having faith in someone. We all need someone like that."
Belle sniffled. "I'm not…"
"You're amazing and screw that bastard for not seeing it. But, we see it. We see you. So, you're coming to game night and you're going to have a great time." Ruby grinned.
Belle's cheeks flushed a light pink as she glanced away once more. "Are you sure?"
"We're your family, Belle. We're here for each other. We're here for you. We all want you to be okay like you want other people to be okay," Ruby replied with full sincerity in her voice. I hope this gets through to her. None of us blame her for his bullshit.
Belle took a deep breath and looked into Ruby's eyes. "Deep down, I know that."
Ruby stood up a little straighter with her shoulders squared. "Good because it's true. So, are you ready to go?"
Belle gave a small smile. "But, first help me close up."
Ruby could not help the happy laugh that escaped her and, of course, she helped. They closed up the library and then made their way to the Swan-Mills place.
Regina and Emma were setting up for the evening while Henry kept the twins occupied. They could walk and get into stuff now. Both Nathan and Lucia were good for putting the most random things in their mouths, but Henry watched them well and distracted them as best he could while letting them roam the house.
"Can we do anything?" Belle asked.
"Keep the kids occupied," Regina replied, waving her away as she placed two cakes on a short table. There were a couple of others around the living room.
"Where's the rest of the Sheriff's department?" Ruby looked around for Dorothy.
"Showing off their driving skills to each other. They offered to pick up drinks," Emma answered.
Ruby held in a wince. "We're trusting the people who have been here the shortest to get drinks?" Dorothy could drink with the best of them, but had no idea how to pick or order alcohol.
Emma snorted. "No, it's just a pick up. We explained in detail how it works."
Ruby laughed. That made sense. Regina had snacks set out before anyone else arrived, but it took no time for the whole family to be there, Mulan being included because the Sheriff's department was tight like that. Fenrir and Tinker Bell had no idea what board games were, so that would make things interesting in general. It was always a test in patience in trying to explain things to them, but Maleficent usually did a good job of it… after Lily explained it to her.
Robyn and Little Man, as everyone slowly but surely called Neal to avoid traumatizing Emma further, ran around with the twins trying to keep up with them. Child gates limited where they could go until Little Man tried to jump one and miss, which would drop the gate, or Robbie decided to practice her magic. The twins thankfully showed no signs of magic yet, but they all knew it was coming. It had to. Their parents were powerful magic users and they were the product of True Love. They were a disaster waiting to happen.
It was a packed house once everyone was there. Even Granny showed up at the last minute, leaving the diner to "an old friend." She did not elaborate who this friend was, even with Zelena trying to pester it out of her.
They jumped right into the games and snacks. They started with something that felt simple enough, and appropriate to play with Henry as well as parents, Apples to Apples. It was easy to play with a group and hard to cheat, unless it was for someone else. And even then, it was hard to prove if cheating was going on or if certain people thought alike or just knew the person picking that well.
As everyone got comfortable, couples naturally cuddled up close. Belle's eyes got sad, probably thinking of Rumple. Ruby would have none of that and threw her arms around Belle as they were on the section of the sofa. Belle yelped, getting the attention of others. Snow and David smiled at the move, as if they were happy someone showed Belle some affection.
"Hey, you better not be looking at her cards," Emma said, cutting right through any tension that could have occurred.
"Says the person with her chin on Regina's shoulder and eyes just all in her cards," Ruby replied.
"Yeah, so I know cheating when I see it," Emma shot back. She and Regina were curled up in a single armchair.
Regina moved her head to glare at Emma. "I dare you to try and cheat me. Dare you." Her tone was a little scary, but that turned Emma on and once again kept things normal, so it was fine.
The game began and Dorothy's hand found Ruby's knee. Ruby glanced at her, gave her a smile, and put her free hand on Dorothy's hand, but did not remove her arm from around Belle. Belle never moved or moved her, so she assumed Belle needed the contact. Even when they switched games, got up for food, or just had to move around, Belle made her way back to Ruby's embrace. Maybe this gave her the strength to address the elephant in the room once all the children had gone to bed.
"I think the freedom is the scariest thing of all," Belle said as they all mulled around the living room, lying that they would help clean up.
"Learning who you are on your own can be scary," Regina replied. She was sitting down, not pretending that she was going to clean up. She would probably use magic when they were all gone.
"But, we're here with you, learning too, you scaredy cat," Zelena added. Maybe one day, she would just learn to be sweet, but no one held their breath over it. After all, Regina was barely sweet and that was only occasionally and Regina was the nice sister.
"That's the great thing about family, Belle. You're never in it alone." Emma motioned around her. Honestly, she was not wrong, especially since everyone in the room was definitely a work in progress, including Granny.
Belle sniffled. "Thank you. I just… I feel so stupid." She wiped away tears. Snow gave her a hug around the shoulders and handed her a tissue. But, more importantly, Snow did not say anything. Yes, Ruby loved Snow like a sister, but this was the type of situation she could easily ruin by opening her mouth.
"I think we all know that feeling well," Granny, of all people, replied.
Tinker Bell nodded. "When I lost my wings, I was scared, but I was happy I didn't have to be with Blue anymore. It was hard, but it's gotten so much easier and better with all of you around. Everyone is so supportive." Lily patted her on the shoulder.
"She 's right." Zelena sighed, as if it was some great burden to admit. "Having all of you has made life that much easier and is a great help in figuring out who I am." Maleficent pulled her close, giving her a one arm hug. She had been noticeably calmer and happier since dating Maleficent, who also seemed in better spirits.
"Fact of the matter," Mulan started. "We have all done things in life we regret and we're all learning to deal with it and move on. You are not alone and you can talk to any of us about it."
"But, aren't you, like, perfect?" Emma said with a grin.
Mulan laughed. "None of us sit here as perfect." Fenrir had the nerve to glare at her and Mulan glared right back, daring him to say something. "We all have regrets." That was important. Belle was not alone in having done something she wished worked out differently or loved someone she wished worked out differently.
"Thank you all," Belle said.
"I think the point is you don't have to thank us for being here for you or with you," Dorothy replied. "We're doing what we're supposed to do for you."
Ruby gave Belle a squeeze and that seemed to be enough. But, the conversation did not drop. There was a beat of silence and then a serious question.
"What's a couple of decades in prison to an immortal, though?" Lily pondered aloud and then sipped her beer.
"Nothing but time to plot revenge," Maleficent said and Fenrir growled. Maleficent nodded. "True. He does have to worry about you now."
"So, you'll be keeping an eye on him now, Fenrir?" Regina asked and Fenrir nodded. "Are you sure? He has gotten the better of the divine before." Fenrir growled.
Zelena looked skeptical. "For all eternity?"
Fenrir groaned, upset with their doubt apparently. "Yes, and the second he gets out of line, I will eat him like his name is Odin."
Emma laughed. "Good enough for me." She tipped her beer to Fenrir. He smiled, as best a wolf could. That also closed the conversation. They then all focused on making sure all the food and drinks were done, therefore there would be nothing to clean up. Problem solved there.

It was barely a week later when Ruby saw Belle would need a little more coaxing to avoid wallowing and fading away in the library. She spotted Belle a few times hovering just outside of the pawn shop and she turned down a couple of lunches with Ruby. This would not do. Of course, Emma had her back. Everybody would now be going out on Friday night, except Granny and Fenrir. They would babysit.
"Are you sure you can get Belle to come?" Emma asked as she and Ruby hammered out details in the Sheriff's station's bullpen.
"It's not like it's a couples' thing, so we should be good," Ruby replied.
"But, it is a queer thing," Emma pointed out.
Ruby stared at her like she was an idiot. "Mulan's coming." She jabbed her thumb in the aforementioned deputy's direction.
"Mulan is bi," Mulan reminded her.
"Tink's coming," Ruby said.
"As a fairy, Tink is ace," David pointed out.
"You're coming!" Ruby pointed to David, who shrugged.
Emma snorted. "Yeah, Dad and his man-crush on Hook are coming. Belle might be the straightest person we know and we know Mom."
Ruby rubbed her chin in thought. "Who probably had a crush on Regina and never realized it. Got it. It's also creepy you date people your parents want to date."
Emma shrugged. "Might be the least creepy creepy thing about my life. But, yeah, Belle could use the night out, but I don't want it to be weird for her."
"We'll talk to her." Ruby grabbed Dorothy's hand. "But, I doubt it'll be weird for her. We should all be worried about Snow."
"Regina's going to record her reaction the second she realizes it's a queer club," Emma said.
Ruby snickered in spite of herself. She really should not find that funny, but also Emma should not find that funny. "If she ever does." Snow could be thick like that sometimes. "Anyway, you'll let everyone else know?"
Emma scoffed. "I'm just going to put it in the family chat."
"Dude, your son's in that chat," Ruby reminded her.
Emma rolled her eyes. "And he knows his parents are bi and we go out. It'll be fine."
Ruby's brow furrowed. "How Regina had more kids with you, I don't understand." It just did not seem like a good thing for Henry to know the adults in his life were going out to a club.
Emma took out her phone, as if that settled things. She texted the plan in their family chat. Henry's only question was about being able to stay up late. Both mothers allowed it. Okay, maybe Ruby was just being overprotective.
At the end of the day, Ruby went to pick up Dorothy, so they could both talk to Belle. Dorothy, who was generally laid back, seemed more subdued than usual as they walked toward the library. Ruby gave her hand a squeeze.
"You okay, babe?" Ruby asked.
Dorothy nodded, focused ahead of them. "Fine."
"You sure? You smell tense."
Dorothy laughed. "I love that you smell my feelings rather than see. But, I suppose I feel a bit weird coming with you to convince Belle to come out."
Ruby's brow wrinkled. "Why weird?"
"Because she barely knows me. Yeah, she's your friend and you're my girlfriend and we've been to tons of family functions together, but we barely talk."
"Maybe it'd be nice for you both to start talking. You need friends out of the Sheriff's department."
Dorothy grinned and her eyes sparkled. "Do I?" She loved working with Emma, Mulan, and David. It was rare she had a bad day with them, and usually it was outside forces that made the day bad, not the people with her.
Ruby laughed. "Belle needs friends in general. She let herself get so wrapped up in Rumple, she lost herself, a few times. In fact, we only really became friends when she was away from him in the hospital. When she got out and was back with him, it all really stopped."
Dorothy's brow wrinkled as she regarded Ruby with a tilt of the head. "Really? You seem so close."
"I think we just click. I've had that with a few people, like Snow and Emma."
Dorothy nodded. "You really are a warm individual."
Ruby blew a raspberry. "You didn't think so at first."
"I learned better. So, you really feel connected to Belle, hmm?"
Ruby nodded. "Since I first met her." Eventually, she would have to tell Dorothy she might have had a little crush on Belle, but now did not seem like the best time for it.
Dorothy smiled. "Then I'll do my best with her, but realize, the Sheriff's department has my heart."
Ruby laughed. "You might want to rethink that with Regina off of maternity leave. You guys are going to be in so much trouble."
Dorothy chuckled. "Emma will get us both in and out of trouble. We've seen her operate."
Ruby could not help laughing even more. She gave Dorothy's hand a squeeze as they continued on their way to the library. Belle was busy helping a little kid check out a book, smiling all the way through the process. The smile wavered a bit when she was done and she looked at Ruby and Dorothy. Ouch. That never happened before. Did Belle have a problem with Dorothy?
"Hey, Belle," Ruby said while Dorothy gave a simple wave.
"Hi. I already saw Emma's text," Belle replied.
Ruby nodded. Okay, that explained why her expression dipped a bit. "Good, so we can figure out what we're all wearing."
Belle shook her head. "No. It's clearly a date night."
Ruby scoffed. "And who is Tinker Bell dating? Hell, who is Lily dating? Who's Mulan dating? I have so many questions."
"Are they coming?"
"Everybody's coming, including you. We're about to tear the Spotted Hyena up."
Belle frowned. "Is that the new club?"
"Yup." Ruby loved that as Storybrooke settled and more people accepted that this was home, the town was growing and new things popped up almost weekly.
Belle's expression did not lighten one bit. "I don't think I belong in a club."
"Oh, really?" Ruby waved that idea off. "Why not? You like adventure, dancing, and dressing up as much as the rest of us. Besides, we have to show our support to the first and only openly queer business in town." That was very exciting. To think, I actually figured I was the only queer person around here at one point. It was such a crazy thought.
"Do we?" Belle arched an eyebrow.
"If we want more, yes. That's how this works."
"Is it?" The questions were meant to distract, like if she asked enough questions, Ruby would give up.
Ruby laughed. "Why are you doing this? You'll have a blast. We get to watch Tink try to dance. We get to try to get Mulan liquored up. We have to try to keep Zelena and Regina not being liquored up."
Dorothy pursed her lips. "I think I want to see that last one."
"I've seen it, several times. It involves a lot of fire. We don't want that," Ruby replied and kept her attention to Belle. "Point being, we all need time out and have fun, as well as support queer businesses. Besides, we do owe Emma and Regina a night out that's not in their house."
Belle sighed, shaking her head. "You're not going to let up, are you?"
Ruby grinned, showing all of her teeth. "Now, you're getting it."
"I'm sure you know she can be extremely persistent when she gets an idea in her head," Dorothy said to Belle.
Belle nodded. "I am well aware."
"Yeah, so we'll be by to pick you up at eight. Are you still staying here?" Ruby asked.
"Yes."
"You know, if you want any help, we can get the apartment set up with you." Ruby pointed to herself and Dorothy, who just nodded along. Belle had been staying in the apartment above the library with Mayor Mills' blessing. No one would dare let her go back to the pawn shop, even though she tried several times.
Belle looked between them. "I don't want to take up too much of your time."
Dorothy scoffed. "You really don't get it, huh? One, Ruby is here for you double-time, and, two, you have a family, who is always ready to help you out." Dorothy flexed her bicep, which was on display with her short-sleeved polo shirt. "Besides, I like heavy lifting."
Ruby chuckled. "She really does. So, do you need any help with the apartment?" The answer to that was kind of obvious.
Belle just glanced away. Okay, not a good sign. It was probably worse than Ruby thought. Ruby might have to enlist the rest of their family to help out, but that was something to worry about for another day.
"I'm not sure I have any clothes to go out in," Belle said.
Ruby scoffed. "Regina, Zelena, and Maleficent all exist and all would be happy to magic you up some clothes. We'll just meet them at the mansion." She pulled out her phone and texted that immediately. Regina answered with amazing quickness, eager to dress Belle apparently. "Look at that, you already have one volunteer."
Belle blew out a breath in defeat. "Okay."
Ruby put her hand on Belle's shoulder. "It'll be fine. Okay?"
Belle nodded. "I know it will. Thank you for this." She stared at Ruby, deep in the eyes.
Ruby grinned once more. "We care about you."
Belle nodded again, eyes glistening. There was so much to put back together with her and Ruby was so happy they had so many people willing to help. Belle needed to figure out who she was now that Rumple was gone, at least for their lifetimes.
-8-8-8-8-
For the night out, everyone met up outside of Granny's. Ruby could only wonder how Regina dressed Belle. It was probably something that would grow into trips to Regina's dressmaker, as she had these little adventures with several members of the family at this point, including the children. Hell, including Dorothy, who was positively yummy in her tailor made suit that she wore at the moment.
"If they don't get here soon, I'm taking you back inside," Ruby said, hands around Dorothy's waist.
Dorothy grinned. "That's exactly what Emily said would happen when she fitted me for this suit." She brushed away imaginary lint from her sleeve. It really should be criminal for this suit to fit her like she had been poured into it. I shouldn't have let her out of the house with this one.
"Navy blue is definitely your color." Ruby groaned. "And the way it stretches across your shoulders. Shit, no, let's just go. No one's here yet." She was serious and she tried to pull Dorothy toward the B&B.
Dorothy chuckled and she would not be moved. "No, we're not doing that. This was your idea."
"They can go without us. You're just…" Ruby growled. The way Dorothy had her teal shirt unbuttoned, just enough to hint at her breasts, almost like Regina did except not as many buttons. Her hair hung free in chocolate waves, falling just over her eye, making her so damn tempting. It was probably a mistake to take her to a gay club looking as she did. Oh, how will she react to getting the attention she's definitely going to get? Ruby had to see that.
Dorothy patted her hand. "Save it for later. I'll still be in these same clothes at the end of the night. Possibly working up a nice little sweat."
Ruby groaned. "You're not playing fair." Sweaty Dorothy drove her insane. Damn wolf sense of smell.
Dorothy chuckled and kissed her cheek. "Says the woman standing here in a short red skirt, knowing what the sight of her legs do to me."
"You're already picturing them wrapped around your waist, aren't you?" Ruby smirked. "That could be you right now, but you want to do the right thing."
Dorothy smiled. "Yes, and here they come anyway." She pointed to the cars in the distance. She had amazing eyes for a normal human.
Ruby could see Regina's car approaching and behind her was Maleficent's car and behind that was David's truck. They piled in with David and Snow. Regina was busy that night, as she obviously dressed Snow and David as well. Ruby hugged her best friend and had to mention it immediately.
"Did Emma have to bribe Regina to get her to do outfits for you?" Ruby asked as she and Snow pressed themselves in the middle of the seat. Snow was decked out in a lilac dress with a white jacket, fashioned to mimic the Old World style with a modern flare. The dress fell just above her knees, but then had cloth coming down to her calves from the jacket.
David guffawed. "You know she did, but then Regina hit her with 'I was going to dress them anyway because they're not embarrassing me when we go out.' Then, she gave us a dirty look for good measure."
"Well, she is Regina. One day Emma will learn," Ruby said.
"She's already learned. Never call Regina's bluff," Snow pointed out.
"True enough." Ruby conceded that. "I should've let her dress me, though. I'm kinda jealous. She has you two looking fresh. Got my baby looking fine." She took Dorothy's hand, kissed her knuckles, and then held her hand tight.
Dorothy kissed her cheek. "My baby looks fine, too." Of course, this made Ruby smile as they all continued on their way to the Spotted Hyena.
The Spotted Hyena was in a part of town that had a few factories, which were all closed. This made parking very easy. Also, the Spotted Hyena was really the only place with lights and a crowd, making it easy to see. They all piled out of their cars and Ruby's eyes found Belle with no problem. She had ridden with Regina, Emma, and Mulan, and damn she looked really good. The cobalt, short sleeve dress with golden lace was stare-worthy.
"Regina, did you dress everybody?" Ruby asked.
Regina, dressed in black leather pants with a red and black leather corset, regarded her with pursed lips. "You think I'm about to step out onto the social scene with you all looking any old way. You will not be embarrassing me." Regina then looked her up and down. Hopefully, her mini-skirt with a matching halter top, and black leather jacket worked. "You're adequate, but do you really think this was the outfit to match with that?" She motioned to Dorothy.
Ruby scoffed, arms around Dorothy. "I don't own a wardrobe to match this." And she definitely would have to start seeing if Regina could fit her into those fashion trips if Dorothy got any more outfits like this. "I'm gonna be in trouble taking her inside, aren't I?"
Regina shrugged. "No more than the rest of us." And then Emma strutted over in a red dress that seemed to make Regina's hand go right to her ass. Emma was unbothered and just put her hand around Regina's waist.
"Fair enough." Ruby looked around. Regina had to dress everyone because they definitely looked ready for the club, but in like a classy, still kind of Evil Queen kind of way, even Tinker Bell decked out in a black and emerald dress. It was amazing. Ruby might have to talk them into going out more just for the eye-candy.
"We're going to have to arrest all of us. It has to be illegal to look this good," Emma said, brushing her hair out of her face. She had her princess curls back.
Mulan looked down at herself. "Is it really?" She had on a wine colored suit with matching vest and black shirt. It was clearly a men's suit, but had been tailored just for her. A golden tie shot down the middle of her chest and she had on polished oxfords.
"Guys, we're gonna get Mulan killed. They're going to tear her to pieces seeing her in that!" Ruby pointed to Mulan.
"Just Mulan? Cuz I don't see Dorothy walking out of there unscathed either." Emma looked Dorothy up and down.
Regina snorted. "We all know how popular the Sheriff's department is. Please, everyone just go in there and act like you have sense." She looked squarely at Zelena. "And think before you speak." Her eyes went right to Snow. "And no one is to get upset if their partner is chatted up by anyone."
"So, you're not going to destroy anyone's happiness when they see Emma?" Ruby asked with a grin.
"Ruby, I swear—" Regina growled.
Ruby held up her hands in surrender. "I promise. We'll all be good." They all just wanted to have a good time, after all.
As they made their way to the door, Belle ended up next to Ruby, which was fine. Dorothy ended up behind them, as if she was standing guard as they were waved into the club, skipping the line. Beyond the Sheriff's department being popular as hell, Regina was a rock star among the entire queer community, for her gender bending prowess and defying omega stereotypes. It was a great start to what ended up being a great night.
The club was packed with just people of all types, a rainbow she would later tell Emma, who would snicker because they were idiots like that. They barely stepped inside before the owner, Shenzi, practically appeared before them. She was dressed in a black suit with a silver vest, several face piercings, and long dreadlocks pulled into a ponytail with the sides of her head shaved.
"I heard you all had graced our presences, but couldn't believe it," Shenzi said.
Regina smirked. "Well, it's always good to support so-called villains as they turn their lives around."
Shenzi chuckled. "Just trying not to go hungry again. You lot showing up should make the club very popular. Let me get you a few tables in the VIP section and see if we can't work out a deal where you show up more often."
Regina motioned for her to lead the way. "I'm sure if we like the vibe, arrangements can be made." They wisely let Regina speak for them.
They got several tables in the VIP section and then were free to go. House music pumped through Ruby and she dragged both Dorothy and Belle out onto the dance floor, which was packed. Dorothy had been out on the town with Ruby enough to just fall right into line, but Belle needed some coaxing. So, Ruby faced Belle and put her hands on Belle's waist while Dorothy made herself comfortable behind Ruby. Ruby got Belle to move with her.
Emma came around and handed them drinks. How she managed to hold four glasses had to be magic, but she claimed she worked for a catering company and learned it there. Either way, they had strong drinks and that helped loosen Belle up to at least get her to dance. Emma vanished, probably going back to Regina, but came back who-knew-how-long after with more drinks, which were even stronger than before. That was enough to get Belle to really let go.
At some point, Ruby lost Dorothy to a mob of omegas, which was to be expected. Ruby focused on Belle. Dorothy could take care of herself. Eventually, Belle had to catch her breath. She worked up a nice little glow and her scent tickled Ruby's nose. She ignored that and they made their way to the tables. Maleficent and Zelena were there with Regina, who was still chatting with Shenzi.
"Is she now doing mayor business when we're supposed to be enjoying ourselves?" Ruby asked, nodding toward Regina.
Maleficent flicked her wrist. "I've already texted Emma to come collect her or she'll do that all night."
Ruby nodded. "Nice. Are the drinks free?"
"Free and flowing," Zelena answered.
Ruby nodded again and waved a server over. She and Belle ordered more drinks. Belle's face was flushed, so Ruby also ordered some water for her. Belle curled up close to Ruby while Ruby scanned the dance floor, trying to spot Dorothy. She was still sandwiched between a group of ladies. Then, Ruby spotted Mulan, sat at the bar with Merida.
"Holy crap, is Mulan chatting up Merida?" Ruby asked.
Maleficent and Zelena looked off into the crowd, but then they shrugged. Okay, well that was something she would dig into with Emma later on, or maybe even Dorothy. For now, she needed to enjoy the night out. So, after drinks, she dragged Belle back out onto the dance floor, running into Emma and Regina out there. They had an audience, which was not surprising. She gave Emma a head nod, which was returned, and then went about her business.
She and Belle had one more drink and that was kind of it for Belle. She had to sit down. Ruby took her back to the table and Belle leaned against her. She would not be surprised if Belle fell asleep, but Belle was mumbling poetry under her breath. It was cute.
Dorothy slid over to Ruby's unoccupied side and Ruby groaned at the smell of her. She had worked up a really good sweat and all Ruby wanted to do was run her tongue over every inch of Dorothy. Dorothy grinned, knowing the effect she had on Ruby right now. She kissed Ruby's cheek and put her arm around Ruby, being careful of Belle.
"Having fun?" Dorothy asked.
Ruby nodded. "I enjoyed myself."
"If you want, I'll keep Belle company. I know you still have more than enough energy to keep on dancing. Emma is still out there, too," Dorothy said.
"You sure you don't mind?" Ruby would not mind getting a chance to really cut loose, especially with Emma.
Dorothy smiled. "Of course I don't mind. Besides, some of the people out there are getting fresh with me now."
Ruby laughed. "You wanna point out who? I'll straighten them out." She shook her fist.
"It's fine. My ass looks very grabbable in these pants."
Ruby leaned in, nipping Dorothy's ear. "I plan to grab it later on, in and out of those pants."
Dorothy chuckled. "Promises, promises. Go dance."
She did not have to tell Ruby twice. She slid Belle over to Dorothy and smiled at Belle continued mumbling poetry under her breath, like she did not notice the swap.
Ruby made her way onto the dance floor and ended up with Lily of all people. They did not often interact, but moved well together as dance partners. It worked out for Lily who garnered a lot of attention, but also worked out for Ruby. She found someone who could keep up with her. It was nice while it lasted, but did not last long. They drifted apart and Lily disappeared into the sea of moving bodies.
Ruby did not hurt for dance partners throughout the night. Eventually, they had to leave, though. A good chunk of their party were visibly smashed, including Emma and Snow. Wonder if she ever realized it's a queer club. Thankfully, all of the drivers were still sober. Ruby hated driving David's truck.
"Same cars, everyone, unless we've lost people along the way," Regina said and she took stock of their group. "It looks like we only lost Lily, which was expected. Maleficent, are you good to drive? Zelena's barely able to stand."
Maleficent, with her arm around Zelena to keep her upright, nodded. "It's fine. Ruby, you and Dorothy can ride with us. The back seat has to be more comfortable than four in the truck's front."
"Yes, and you can squeeze Belle in between you," Regina said with Emma now plastered to her back. She ignored Emma. "Unless, you'd rather us drop her off."
Dorothy waved that off. "We can handle Belle. Emma and Mulan are way too drunk to help you with Belle." Mulan was basically asleep against Tinker Bell, who they clearly had not gotten to drink enough. She looked fully alert.
Regina chuckled. "That's what the magic is for, but I would prefer to not have a car full of drunk ladies, thank you."
So, Ruby and Dorothy carefully gathered Belle into Maleficent's car. They settled in the back seat while Maleficent had to deal with Zelena trying to grope her in the front. Either Maleficent used magic on her or Zelena fell asleep the moment the car pulled off.
Belle was surprisingly quiet. She seemed to be taking in her surroundings more than anything else, eyes drifting out of the window for a moment. She rested her head on Ruby's shoulder and it was not surprising she fell asleep.
"Does she still stay at the library?" Maleficent asked. "Not that I would take her back to the pawn shop if she was trying to stay there again."
"No, she's definitely at the library now. She hasn't officially moved in, but she's there," Ruby replied. She had made it her business lately to make sure Belle was there and not trying to punish herself by going back to the pawn shop as she had done over the past year.
"It's been a year!" Maleficent yelped.
Ruby shrugged. "Betrayal is hard. You know that."
Maleficent nodded. "Yes, it is. Well, let us know what the situation is like, so we understand how much help is needed. The Mills sisters might just magic everything if it's truly dire."
"Yeah." Ruby was not sure of the situation. Belle had not let anyone into her library apartment. Ruby was not sure what to expect, but she would brace for the worst.
And when they got to the library, none of them could have guessed how Belle lived, but it was clearly not good. Ruby carried Belle up bridal style while Maleficent used her magic to unlock the door despite the fact that Zelena was draped on her like a cloak, having startled awake the moment the car stopped. The door swung open and revealed just stacks and stacks of manuscripts and boxes piled to the very high ceiling.
"Oh, my," Maleficent said in sheer shock.
"Is there even a bed in here to put her down?" Dorothy wondered aloud.
Ruby sniffed the air. It was stale, drenched in old papers and dust. It was possible Belle had never opened a window, ever. Her ears picked up the scratch of small nails. Mice.
"Maybe… it would be better if we took her with us," Ruby said.
Dorothy nodded, almost absently, eyes scanning the place with naked terror. "Yes, this leaves much to be desired."
"Back to the car then and we definitely know what our next family activity is." Maleficent waved them all to turn.
They all piled back into the car and the next stop was the B&B. Just Dorothy and Ruby got out this time. Ruby still held Belle and Dorothy let them into their apartment.
"You can put her in our bed," Dorothy said.
"You sure?" Ruby asked.
"I've slept in the woods many times. The couch won't kill me."
Ruby nodded. "Can we fit on the couch?"
"Good point. I'll make us a comfortable pallet. You take care of Belle."
Ruby went into their bedroom, which was only separate from the living room by half of a wall, and eased Belle into their queen-sized bed. Belle barely made a noise as she went down. Ruby took the short trip to the bathroom, got a cool, damp washcloth, and gently scrubbed away Belle's makeup. Then she unzipped Belle's dress, taking down the sleeves without exposing her too much. Pajamas would be one of Dorothy's t-shirts, as that was what Ruby typically wore. Then, she removed the dress, hanging it on the bathroom door to avoid wrinkles.
"Thank you, Ruby," Belle said in a breath. This made Ruby smile.
Ruby went to the living room to check in with Dorothy to see she had made them a fine pallet with their sleeping bags and comforters. She hugged Dorothy.
"Not that I'm bothered, but what's this for?" Dorothy asked, giving Ruby a squeeze.
"You're being so great about this, about Belle."
Dorothy kissed Ruby softly and smiled. "She obviously needs so much care. I'm right here with you. I want to help her as much as possible."
"Again, thank you, especially since this ruined our little private after party." She had really been looking forward to messing up their bed together.
Dorothy chuckled. "And I made sure to work up a good sweat for you."
Ruby buried her nose in Dorothy's neck. "And you do smell extra tempting. Can I make it up to you by offering a shared shower?"
"I accept."
So, they shared a shower, though it was quick and fairly innocent as far as a couple's shower went. It just seemed wrong to try to do anything when they had company. Sure, the company was in an alcohol-induced coma, but still.
Belle did not stir as they grabbed sleepwear from the dresser right next to the bed as quickly as they could. Then, they snuggled underneath the covers on the pallet, which was quite comfortable. Not as good as their bed, but Dorothy was there and Ruby was content.
"While sex would've been great, this is still nice" Ruby curled around Dorothy with her nose pressed to Dorothy's neck. She had washed away that great scent from her sweat, but her fresh-from-the-shower smell was just as good.
Dorothy let loose a low, but amused laugh. "You act like that was our only chance to ever have sex again. I promise you, it'll happen. You did a great thing tonight. I'm always proud to call you my girlfriend, but tonight even more so."
"I'd tell you to stop praising me, but we both know I don't want that." Ruby wiggled her eyebrows.
Dorothy laughed again. "I love you so much."
"I know and I love you, too. Hell, I think I love you even more now with how well you're taking me helping Belle. I know usually an alpha would be jealous of something like this."
Dorothy scoffed. "I'm both secure in myself and our relationship. Besides, I'm really understanding the task you have taken on and the care Belle truly needs after seeing her apartment. I support you now even more than before."
What did I do to deserve a girlfriend like this? Whatever it was, Ruby hoped she kept doing it because her girlfriend was amazing. "I don't think it's possible for you to support me even more than before." Dorothy was always there for her and whatever nonsense she wanted to get into. Usually, it was well meaning nonsense, but nonsense nonetheless.
"Well, I do."
Ruby could not help kissing Dorothy. "You're so perfect."
Dorothy only smiled. They settled down for sleep. It was probably going to be quite the morning when Belle woke up with one hell of a hangover. Belle might have never had a hangover before.
-8-8-8-8-
Ruby and Dorothy had been up for a couple of hours when Belle gave her first miserable groan. Ruby, still clad in her pajamas of Dorothy's sleeveless t-shirt — because the smell was intoxicating — and short shorts, poked her head in the bedroom entrance. Belle had her face buried in the pillow.
"There's water and aspirin on the bedside table for you," Ruby said.
Belle jumped up and groaned, holding her head. Back down she went, face in the pillow. "Ruby?" Her voice was thick.
"Yes. Relax." Ruby stepped next to the bed and rubbed her shoulder. "Drink the water and take the aspirin."
"My head is killing me."
"That's the hangover. You had quite a bit to drink."
Belle let loose what sounded like a sob. "Did I embarrass myself?"
"Of course not. You had a good time, which was the point. You're not the only one waking up a mess. If Zelena even is up. Hell, Emma's probably face down in her pillow, too. Relax. It's Sunday. Dorothy made ham and cheese omelets. You want one? She's really good at breakfast."
Belle moaned, much lower this time. "Yes, please."
"Cool. Take your time. There's no rush." With that, she left Belle to get her the omelet.
"How is she?" Dorothy asked from her space on the couch.
"Headache, as expected. Food should help."
"Well, there's plenty still. I made you an extra omelet and then some home fries and sausage."
"You really are the perfect woman."
Dorothy sucked her teeth, but Ruby meant it. No one ever cooked for her before Dorothy. She grabbed an omelet for Belle and plated some home fries with a couple of sausage links, just in case she was extra-hungry. She also poured a glass of apple juice. Regina had gone back to growing apples and sent fresh juice and cider to the diner on the regular.
Upon entering the room again, Ruby found Belle back asleep. The glass of water was empty and the aspirin was gone, though. She put the food down. Hopefully, Belle would wake up before it was too cold.
Ruby then joined Dorothy on the couch, wanting to enjoy a quiet morning. They had chores to do, stuff left over from the week, but that could wait. Ruby enjoyed being in Dorothy's arms, watching a horror show they were really into. They made it through an episode before Belle emerged, holding her empty plate in one hand and the other making sure her shirt stayed down.
Ruby popped up. "I've got your plate. Make yourself comfortable on the couch." She grabbed the dish before Belle could open her mouth. She rushed it to the sink while Belle just stood there.
"I really should get out of your way," Belle replied in a small voice.
"Nonsense. You're not in our way," Dorothy declared.
Ruby took that as a cue to put her arms around Belle and guide her to the sofa. She put herself in the middle, but kept her arm around Belle. Belle was quiet for a moment.
"I should get home," Belle eventually said.
"Soon. Just relax." Ruby patted her head. "You have to start practicing self-care. How about some tea? I can't make it like Regina or Snow, but it'll be enough to help you relax."
Belle sighed, putting her hands in her lap. "That might actually be nice."
Ruby nodded. "Tea and cookies coming up." Anything to keep Belle from fleeing the scene.
While the water heated up, Ruby also fetched Belle some shorts, so she could be more comfortable. Belle disappeared into the bathroom for a long moment. Ruby was able to put the tea and cookies on the coffee table and cuddle up to Dorothy by the time Belle rejoined them. She had on the long mesh shorts and she curled up on the sofa next to Ruby without protest.
"Thank you both for all of this," Belle said.
"We're here for you to lean on. There's no shame in having people who are there for you and there's nothing to be ashamed of in leaning on those people," Dorothy said.
"Here, here. So, let's drink this tea, enjoy these shortbread cookies, and watch a movie. Life can happen later." Ruby grabbed a cookie for herself and put a cookie in Dorothy's mouth. Dorothy ate the whole cookie in one bite.
Belle seemed to agree by taking a sip of her tea. There was no more arguing after that. They also got nothing done that day.

Ruby was pleased to find Belle much more open to help now. There was no fight when the family showed up to help fix up the library apartment. The only real fuss came from if magic should be used to furnish the apartment or not. It was definitely used to get rid of the mice.
"We used magic on the condo," Maleficent pointed out.
"It was your magic, your condo, and neither you nor Lily wanted to go shopping." Regina replied.
"Besides, magic takes all the fun out of showing off our guns," Emma said, motioning to herself, Dorothy, and David. Not a sleeve among them. It was glorious.
Ruby raised her hand. "She has a very good point."
Regina frowned. "We are all to take this seriously. This apartment better look gorgeous by the end of the day. Belle has to sleep here tonight."
"Does she?" Snow asked and Regina was so obviously about to rain down thunder on her, so she continued with a yelp. "There's no bed here."
"No bed?" Regina echoed as if that was not possible. She turned to Belle for an explanation.
"I have a cot." Belle shrugged.
"For a year?" Regina and Zelena shrieked.
Zelena turned to her sister, almost in a full panic. "We must use some magic. We can't have anyone associated with us sleeping on a cot."
"Agreed," Regina replied as if things were dire and it was possible they were. It was insane for Belle to have the apartment for a year and not have a bed. Maybe that was why she used to sneak off to the pawn shop. Well, no more of that with the Mills sisters on the case apparently.
Everyone set about clearing the clutter away. Some magic was used, if only to have someplace to put the tons of books Belle had. Was she stealing from the library?
"Belle, this counts as hoarding. What the hell are you doing with so many books?" Emma motioned to a dusty stack that almost went to the ceiling.
Belle winced. "Well, you know how book reading and book buying are two different hobbies?"
"And you do both," Emma said. "Is there a way you want us to organize them?"
Belle shook her head. "No, I can handle that."
Little by little, they discovered the lovely apartment Belle had buried in grief, pain, and books. It could have probably fit six of Ruby's suites from the B&B. And the tall windows once the shades had been pulled open and the glass clean, were amazing. Belle had a breathtaking view of Main street. With the height of the library, the view stretched to the park.
There was so much space. Three bedrooms, including an ensuite bathroom in two of them. There was exposed brick all over the place. Regina and Maleficent kept debating on paintings that should go up. Surprisingly, they were both quite familiar with Belle's favorite artists, which of course she had plenty. It was good to know over the course of the year, their family had actually gotten to know Belle rather than just let her float around, worrying over Rumple.
"Will paintings even matter? She'll have all of the bloody walls lined with books to make room for all of them," Zelena pointed out.
Regina scowled. "Someone with Belle's intelligence and sophistication cannot have a home void of art." Maleficent nodded, standing by Regina. Bold choice since she had to go home with Zelena.
Belle stepped in before a fight broke out. "Art would be nice, but we don't need to figure everything out today. I do need to organize my books, but we got a lot done today." She motioned around the apartment, which looked so much more like a home now. "I really appreciate all the help."
"Make sure you call us back for round two. The kitchen needs so many appliances," Emma said.
"So you can come here and break something?" Regina arched an eyebrow and earned lots of snickers.
Emma shrugged. "Can't break enough coffee makers or toasters at this point."
Lily clapped her hands. "So, are we ending this stereotypical day on the traditional pizza and beer or are you going to try to class it up?" She stared at her mother and Regina.
Zelena squealed. "I know the best pizza place in town!" Of course, her happiness sold Maleficent and Regina.
Emma slapped Dorothy in the chest. "Come on, muscles. We'll do the beer run."
"I'll supervise," Lily said. "And also force you to put on a couple of hoodies because taken alphas should not be showing off like this."
Emma scoffed. "You're just jealous you're not ripped like this." She flexed her bicep.
Lily rolled her eyes. "You're barely ripped when standing next to Dorothy."
"Yeah, hi." Ruby waved for Lily's attention. "Speaking on behalf of all persons in this room remotely attracted to alphas or the feminine form, can you stop calling attention to them? We're going to have to mop from all of the drool."
This earned laughs and got Emma, Dorothy, and Lily moving. Zelena handled the pizzas. Apparently, it was her favorite junk food and she had sampled shops all over Storybrooke, determining the best one. She was right.
Pizza, wine, and beer turned out to be the perfect way to end the day. They all gathered in Belle's massive living room. Belle allowed Regina, Zelena, and Maleficent to use magic just to put down a rug for everyone to sit on and then took individual requests for seats. Emma showed off and made herself a yellow bean bag and then pulled Regina down to her.
It was a little weird to see Regina eat pizza, but it was even weirder to see how much Zelena enjoyed pizza. She put away three slices with toppings. Ruby had a pie to herself, but that was because of werewolf metabolism. Tinker bell squealed as she ate the pizza. Apparently, this was her first time.
"I think I've got to take you on my trips with Henry from now on," Lily said to Tinker Bell.
"There's so much here. It's hard to try everything," Tinker Bell replied.
"Nah, you're coming with me more. Also, Emma." Lily slapped Emma in the shoulder.
"Already plotting to take her to my favorite Chinese spot. I think she's had it before, but gotta get her a favorite dish," Emma replied.
The conversation sort of stayed on that track as they found out things others had not tried. It was cool how they all made plans to hang out with others to try things with each other. Then, little by little, everyone left until it was just Ruby and Dorothy and, of course, Belle.
"You'll be fine here by yourself?" Ruby asked, still sitting on the floor, pressed against Dorothy. It was ridiculous to ask, as Belle had stayed there plenty of times by herself before the place was cleaned. Now, it should be a paradise to her.
Belle nodded. "Yes. They made sure I have a proper bed and I think Regina plans to kidnap me to do proper furniture shopping." It did sound like that as Regina wandered from room to room and imagined what could fill the space.
"That's good," Dorothy said. "But, if you just don't want to be alone or you feel like the space is too big, don't hesitate to call us."
Ruby could feel stars in her eyes as she gazed at her girlfriend. Dorothy was so amazing. And the way Belle smiled and her eyes shined, she had to agree. She trusted Dorothy to be there.
"I won't," Belle said and then she looked at Ruby. "And I look forward to seeing you at lunch tomorrow."
Ruby grinned and sat up taller. "I'll be here." This was the first time Belle expressed any positive emotions toward their lunches together.
-8-8-8-8-
Belle actually followed through with calling them when she felt alone. It was her first night with her apartment furnished the way she wanted. Her books were all in their proper place. Regina and Maleficent had helped her purchase some art. Regina and Granny had helped her shop for kitchenware. Emma and Lily had been helpful in picking out space saving items, for reasons none of them wanted to think about. But, once everything was done, Belle realized how big the apartment was.
"There's just so much space and only me," Belle said, as if apologizing as she opened the door for Ruby and Dorothy. She was in comfy looking clothes, a plain, blue baseball shirt and navy blue joggers. It was odd to see her like that, but Ruby was glad for it. Maybe she was learning how to relax, which was awesome.
Ruby scoffed. "It's okay. You just have to get used to having so much space. But, we're here for you." She would love to enjoy the space. She loved her suite at the B&B, but it was tiny.
Belle smiled. "Thanks. I didn't want to invite everyone over because it seemed like it wouldn't help me adjust."
"You're probably right about that. Having a bunch of people over would be more like a party than anything else," Dorothy replied.
"So, is this a sleepover or what?" Ruby asked. They were in house clothes, but not sleepwear. Belle had not really specified what she needed in her text message.
"Well, I don't know if you want to do that, but if you would stay until I fell asleep, I'd appreciate it," Belle replied.
Ruby grinned. "Of course, we can do that." And they did. The first of many times they stayed at Belle's place until she fell asleep. One of them always carried her to bed. Ruby had spare keys, so she could lock up when they left.
It was fun to find out what movies Belle liked. Sort of like finding out what things Dorothy was into. Of course, Dorothy did not have a cursed persona to sift through that helped her understand this world better, but Belle did. Belle was always caught off guard when she found she liked something from the mind of Lacey, like action movies and she was very into motorcycle mechanics.
Dorothy also liked those things. So, they had action movie nights, which Ruby did not mind in the slightest. But, when Dorothy and Belle got to talking about the new motorcycle catalogue she got for the library, Ruby excused herself to go do one of her hobbies. Ruby baked cookies.
Now, Ruby would not say she was Regina or Granny when it came to baking, but she could make great cookies. Dorothy and Belle never failed to fawn over them, which was a boost to Ruby's ego. She would have to learn to make more stuff to get that reaction. The happy little moans in particular were very nice.
"Ruby, are you trying to fatten us up?" Belle asked with a smile as she nibbled a sugar cookie. There was a plate on her coffee table with a pile of cookies Ruby just finished making.
"Well, I am going to swallow one of you later on." Ruby managed to keep a straight face as she said that and Belle spit out her cookie.
Dorothy chuckled. "If it's not me, you'll have some explaining to do." She grabbed Ruby and pulled her down in her lap.
Ruby squealed. "Don't worry. Belle and I would let you watch." She winked at Belle.
Poor Belle was as red as one of Regina's apples. "I'm not sure how I feel about voyeurism."
"Oh, snap! I wasn't expecting a response." Ruby clapped as she laughed.
Dorothy gave her a playful pop to her thigh. "Don't say things just for shock value."
Ruby gave a fake moan. "Don't discipline me in front of people like this."
Belle pursed her lips, now thinking too much to be embarrassed. "Thank you for being so comfortable around me."
"Hopefully, you'll get to this comfort level, too," Ruby said and Dorothy nodded.
"Little by little," Belle replied and that seemed true enough. It was more than enough for Ruby and Dorothy.
-8-8-8-8-
Despite Belle having a luxury apartment above the library which was great for entertaining, more often than not, she came over to Ruby and Dorothy's place. She liked it because it was "cozy," according to her. Ruby joked about Belle calling her suite small, which made Belle bush and stammer. She was cute like that.
Belle huffed. "You know I didn't mean it that way." She marched to her side of the sofa. Yup, she had a side and heaven help either of them if they tried to take her spot.
Ruby cackled and dropped to her spot in the middle of the couch. "I would think an actual librarian and someone as well read as you would choose her words more carefully."
"Why? You never do," Belle pointed out.
"Because it's expected of me!" Ruby laughed as she pressed her hands to her chest.
"Is it also expected of you to take up all of the sofa, even though I still have to sit down?" Dorothy asked as she stepped over, looking absolutely delicious with her gray sweatpants hung low on her hips. Her gray tank top had the impression of her abdomen underneath and the outfit made Ruby so weak. She could have sworn she caught Belle looking a couple of times, but nothing more than that. Belle's scent barely changed when Dorothy showed off her physique.
"Yes, it's because it gets you to pick me up and I think we can all agree that's sexy," Ruby remarked.
Dorothy rolled her eyes. "Belle doesn't think your bratty behavior is cute."
"I do not." The twinkle in her brown eyes betrayed her, though.
Dorothy picked Ruby up, exactly as she wanted, and then settled down on her end of the couch. The couch was very small, just a little too big to be considered a loveseat. With Ruby in the middle, she could feel the press of both Dorothy and Belle. Usually, when they watched their shows, Belle would start out leaning on the arm of the couch, but would end up on Ruby. Ruby always ended up on Dorothy in some fashion. She could never sit still. Dorothy barely moved once she settled in unless it was to get a snack or cuddle Ruby. Tonight was no different.
Three episodes in and Ruby's head was in Dorothy's lap. Belle had been against Ruby's shoulder until Ruby went down. Now, Belle was against her hip. Then, Dorothy started rubbing her scalp and Ruby drifted.
The next thing Ruby knew, the living room was totally dark and their show was gone. It was replaced with what looked like a strong man competition. Dorothy was into those.
"Wha happened?" Ruby yawned.
"Shh," Dorothy's voice was low. "Belle's still asleep." She scratched Ruby's scalp.
Ruby actually purred. "Oh. I fell asleep?"
"Almost the second you laid down."
Ruby hummed. "It's your fault. You and your magic fingers."
"But, not your fast paced life where you work sun up to sun down?"
Ruby snickered. "Shut up."
"Anyway, Belle didn't last too long after that. We have to start keeping a blanket or two over the couch. I wanted to cover her, but couldn't go anywhere for fear of waking you."
Ruby yawned. "We can cover her now. Is it a good time to just go to bed?"
"It's past one, so yes. Let's."
"Hold her while I get up."
Dorothy nodded and had to lean to accomplish that task. It was an awkward position, made even more awkward when Ruby had to sort of roll off the couch. Thankfully, she did not hit the coffee table, which was not too far. Belle made a little noise, but nothing more, showing how tired she truly was.
Ruby grabbed a blanket while Dorothy situated Belle more comfortably on the couch. Ruby also grabbed a pillow from their bed and placed it under Belle's head. Then, she made sure Belle was properly covered with the blanket. The television was then turned off and the coffee table cleared of uneaten snacks. After that, Ruby and Dorothy collapsed into bed.
-8-8-8-8-
Ruby woke up to the smell of food, but Dorothy was still pressed to her side. Belle woke up and made breakfast? French toast from what she could smell. With powdered sugar. Oh, and strawberries. Ruby's stomach growled. Dorothy snickered.
"Hungry, huh?" Dorothy asked.
"Belle cooked," Ruby replied.
Dorothy yawned. "Oh, yeah? Smells good?"
"Yup. Come on." Ruby eased out of bed and grabbed Dorothy's hand, pulling her right along.
Exiting the bedroom, they found Belle in their little kitchen, stacking French toast onto a plate. There went Ruby's stomach again. The noise made Belle turn and she grinned at them.
"Oh, good morning," Belle said. "I'm almost done with breakfast."
"Thanks, but you know you didn't have to do that, right?" Ruby asked.
Belle's smile was so bright. "I know I didn't, but you also didn't have to make sure I was comfortable on the couch. You could've woke me up and let me walk home."
Ruby gasped. "We would never!" Dorothy just stuttered, like her brain could hardly comprehend this insanity Belle dared to suggest.
Belle continued to smile. "I know you wouldn't, which is why I made breakfast. I can be kind to you just like you can be kind to me. So, I've got breakfast. There's French toast, sunny side up eggs, cut up strawberries and bananas, and coffee."
Dorothy squealed. "Coffee!" She made a beeline to her favorite mug, which already had coffee in it. Her first cup was always black, as it woke her up, but it was followed by a second cup with almost every sweet thing that could be put into coffee to treat herself.
Ruby helped Belle carry everything to their little table. They all sat down at the table and ate quietly, contently, together. The food was great and then Ruby and Dorothy cleaned up since Belle cooked. Then, there were chores to be done and Belle had to go home. It was a sad moment, indeed, but it was not the last time Belle would spend the night. In fact, it was just the beginning.
-8-8-8-8-
It was over six months since moving Belle into the library and Ruby was pretty sure they worked themselves into a nice little routine, as much of a routine as Storybrooke allowed for anyway. She, Dorothy, and Belle spent a lot of their free time together, doing little chores together, splitting time between apartments, and hanging out together in general. Sometimes, she and Belle were alone, though, most often for lunch.
Dorothy was very interested in building her relationship with the Sheriff's department, and they did a lot of things together during work hours, including lunch. This left Ruby time to eat with Belle. She liked to get Belle outside as much as she could, so she often would drag Belle to the park, which was only a five minute walk away. But, if the weather would not permit it, they would eat in Belle's office in the library, like right now. Ruby tried to ignore the thunder and howling wind outside as she yanked sandwiches from the drenched bag.
"I'm going to go get you a change of clothes, okay?" Belle said.
"No, to do that, you have to go outside," Ruby replied. Belle's apartment was not accessible from inside the library.
"You look like a drowned rat, though." Belle motioned to her.
"I'll be fine." Ruby was soaked all the way through, even though she had an umbrella. The umbrella was useless against that sideways rain, though. She had underestimated how bad it was raining until she was already out in it. "Sit down. Eat." She pointed to the end of the small sofa, which she sat on the edge of. She did not want to get things too wet.
"You need a towel or something." Belle's eyes drifted to her tidy desk against the back wall. There was not a towel to be found there. Nor was there one to be found on the bookshelf against the wall opposite the couch.
Ruby made a face. "Do you have one without leaving the room?"
"Maybe in the bathroom." Belle went into her private bathroom. It was a small thing, just big enough for a toilet and sink.
There was a hand towel, so Belle handed that to Ruby and it was good enough for her hair. Belle finished unpacking their food while Ruby tried to dry off with the small towel. By the time she was done, as things would not get any better, Belle had everything set up and was already eating Ruby's pickle.
"Between you and Dorothy, I'll never eat a pickle again," Ruby said.
"You can easily take more than one," Belle replied.
"I take extra for both of you!"
Belle shrugged. "Yours tastes better."
Ruby rolled her eyes. Dorothy said the same thing whenever she stole from Ruby's plate. Ruby liked to tell Dorothy that was not very alpha-like behavior, which Dorothy always waved off. This would not work with Belle, though… not that it worked with Dorothy.
Ruby pouted. "Shouldn't you prefer to steal from Dorothy? She's the alpha, after all."
"Just because I'm an omega doesn't mean I want to take anything from an alpha. Don't just push stereotypes like that." Belle scolded her with a wagging index finger.
Ruby snorted. "Look, I'm just a lowly beta…" Of course, that never bothered her. She always had other troubles on her mind, which were gone with now. Not just because she had Dorothy in her life, but to see how many other queer people existed in Storybrooke. She was not alone, nor was she weird.
Belle leaned over, hand on Ruby's knee. The area warmed instantly. "Nothing about you is lowly. Never say that about my best friend."
Ruby smiled. "I'll do better. I promise."
Belle sat back. "That's all I ask. Speaking of Dorothy, though, is she all right? She's been quiet in our text thread."
"Sheriff's department is busy with the storm. I actually called her before I walked over since she was so quiet in the chat. She couldn't talk long, but she promised she'd eat. She also wants you to come over tonight, just in case the power goes out."
Belle yelped. "Oh, thank you. I didn't even consider, even though the storm's supposed to get worse tonight."
Which seemed impossible considering it was damn near a nor'easter already. "Do you want me to come pick you up or no?"
Belle shook her head. "I can walk on my own. You're not that far, after all. Should I bring clothes over?"
"You have pajamas and stuff there. Unless you took them back last time we did laundry."
Belle shook her head. "No. I don't recall taking anything back. I guess we can finish our show if the storm doesn't knock out the power."
Ruby nodded. "Yeah, we have to stay awake for more than two episodes. Dorothy has to be sick of us at this point."
Belle laughed. "She's a saint, really."
"That's why I love her." Ruby grinned and then she laughed. "Okay, that's not why I love her. She does a lot of sinful things and that's why I love her."
"You're awful. I love her saintly side."
"Just like I love your saintly side." Ruby batted her eyes, thinking it might make Belle blush. But, Belle took it pretty seriously.
Belle shook her head. "You have to love the whole of me with the way you put up with me and make sure I'm all right."
With a wave of her hand, Ruby let loose an exaggerated scoff. "Well, the whole of you is very amazing. Ask anyone around."
Belle blushed. "You have me confused with you. Thank you so much for being here for me."
"No place I'd rather be." Ruby rubbed Belle's knee.
They enjoyed their lunch and then had to get back to work. The library was surprisingly abuzz with activity despite the storm. Belle had gotten the library up to snuff to the point where there was almost always something happening there everyday to encourage people to come. Even if there was not something organized, the library had enough life in it to keep Belle busy, keep Belle happy, so Ruby loved it.
The storm ended up getting worse into the night, so Belle came to stay at Ruby and Dorothy's suite. Dorothy was out late, but it was not the first time Ruby and Belle were alone in the place. They got comfortable, showered, pajamas were put on, and they talked as they decided to cook Dorothy's favorite meal since she was still out in the tempest.
"Anything else we could do to get her to relax?" Belle asked as they prepared the orange chicken and fried rice.
"Well, on nights like this, I'd take a bath with her, but I doubt all three of us can fit," Ruby joked.
The blush on Belle's face was only slightly funnier than her wide eyes. Ruby could not help laughing at her. Belle scowled and batted Ruby with a dish towel.
"You're not funny with these little remarks," Belle said.
"Your face is so cute, though. I wonder what Dorothy would do if she came into the two of us waiting for her in a bubble bath," Ruby replied.
Belle wagged her finger at Ruby. "Stop thinking about it. Dorothy is not that sort of alpha."
"No, she's not. That really is one of the things I love about her," Ruby agreed.
"You're lucky to have her."
Ruby nodded. "Don't I know it." She meant that with all of her heart. Sometimes, yes, Dorothy got on her nerves, but for the most part, she counted her lucky stars to have found Dorothy.
They moved on, talking about events Belle planned for the library as they cooked. Dorothy came in by the time the food was done. She was drenched, like she had gone swimming. She went to the bathroom immediately, swishing as she walked, leaving a small, dripping trail, and the shower came on.
"Wow, she didn't even stop to speak," Ruby said.
"Must've been a hard day," Belle replied.
"Good thing we've got the cure for that." Ruby grinned and Belle smiled right back.
Ruby made Dorothy's plate and Belle placed it on the table, which was by the window where they would hear the howling wind outside, while Ruby ducked into the bathroom. Dorothy was already out, wearing her underwear, burgundy boxer-briefs that went to her mid-thigh and nothing else. Maybe she forgot Belle was there and that they did not have a bedroom door. Rough day probably did not begin to cover it.
Ruby wrapped Dorothy in a hug and gave her a sweet kiss on her hot shoulder blade. Her body was burning. It must have been a hot shower.
"How are you feeling?" Ruby asked in a low voice.
"I'm just tired." Dorothy's strong body sagged a little as she sighed. "Today was nonstop, even with Emma using magic. Downed trees, damaged property, and so many trapped people. Even with Regina, Zelena, and Maleficent helping with their magic, there was still so much. Even Tinker Bell showed up a couple of times, helping in a rescue from this crazy car accident. She's helpful, but she needs a lot of direction or she makes things more complicated. All of this while stuck in the pouring rain." Dorothy shook her head.
Tinker Bell was a handful, but she always had the best intentions. It was one of the more lovable things about her. She was always ready to help, even if things were beyond her comprehension.
Ruby rubbed her shoulders. "Well, you're home now. We made dinner. You want a shoulder massage?"
Dorothy rolled her shoulders. "Maybe after eating. I'm so hungry." She rubbed her forehead. "I don't even know when we found the time to eat lunch."
"I'm glad you did eat lunch, though."
"We had to. Regina showed up and we all laughed, thinking she was there to scold Emma. We learned better."
Ruby grinned. "Regina's such a den mother. I'm glad she forced you all to eat."
"Yeah, except we had to do it on the sidewalk after we pulled some people out of this sinkhole. You never realize how dangerous a stupid hole can be until you're stuck in it knee deep and water is pouring in." Dorothy made a face.
"I'm sure you all handled it well."
"We did our best. Got the people out. Again, it was a lot and then Regina scolding us like kids over lunch didn't make it any less, even though we were hungry."
Ruby nodded. "Regina did the right thing. Did you eat after that? Did Regina show up again and make you eat dinner?" Ruby asked.
Dorothy sighed. "No, but she forced us to have a snack a couple of hours ago. I just want something to eat and to sit down with you and watch our show and then go to sleep for a full day."
"And get this shoulder rub?" Ruby wiggled her eyebrows and caressed Dorothy's shoulders.
"Yeah." She sighed again, shoulders dipping. "Just thinking about it feels good."
Ruby chuckled and helped Dorothy into her mesh shorts and sleeveless t-shirt. They exited the bedroom to find Belle had made the table, fixing all of their plates. She put the cornbread in a basket in the middle of the table. She even poured wine for them.
"You really are a treasure," Ruby said to Belle.
Belle smiled. "You have me confused with both of you. Now, let's eat before it gets cold."
They all sat down to enjoy their orange chicken, fried rice, and broccoli. The cornbread did not seem to go, but it was a favorite for Dorothy. She had three squares.
Dorothy caught them up on the insanity that happened thanks to the storm that continued to roar outside. Beyond being stuck in a mud hole, there were several car accidents, basement apartments flooded and people needed help getting out, and downed trees all over the place wreaking havoc. She definitely had a busy day, which was why Ruby and Belle shooed her away when she tried to help them clear the table. Dorothy waited for them on the couch.
Dorothy cued up their show, so it was ready for them when they joined her. Ruby sat down a plate of cookies and more wine. Belle sat in her usual space, but Ruby had to move Dorothy to the middle, so she had the space to give Dorothy the shoulder rub she had definitely earned. Dorothy groaned as Ruby got started.
"You're going to be the one falling asleep this time," Ruby said and she kissed Dorothy's cheek before continuing the massage.
Dorothy scoffed. "You and Belle couldn't stay awake once you sit on this sofa at night even if there was money on the line." She grabbed a cookie and enjoyed it with some of her wine.
Belle scowled as she picked up her wine glass. "You make it seem like we always fall asleep."
"You do, which is why we're still watching the same show from two weeks ago. We only get through one or two episodes whenever we settle down to watch," Dorothy replied.
Ruby scoffed, as if that was not true. The thunder and lightning helped keep them awake that night. Ruby ended up sitting at the opposite end of the couch after she finished with Dorothy's shoulder rub. Dorothy leaned way back on the couch and looked like she might fall asleep. Ruby was about to brag, but she fell against Dorothy's shoulder and found it impossible to keep her eyes open. Right before she drifted off, she watched Belle's eyes close. Damn it. Dorothy won.
A particularly loud thunderclap woke Ruby, just enough for her to realize Dorothy was caressing her scalp. She hummed and tried to snuggle closer, but found there was no space. She picked her head up and saw she shared Dorothy's lap with Belle. She looked up at Dorothy, looking for direction more than anything else. Her brain could not really compute anything about the situation.
"Bed?" Dorothy asked.
"No. Belle'll wake up," Ruby replied with a yawn.
Dorothy hummed, but Ruby was out before she heard a response. She rarely slept through storms like she did that night, despite being curled up on the sofa and using Dorothy's lap as a pillow. Belle seemed to sleep through the night as well. Dorothy did not complain, even though she slept sitting up.
"You should get in the bed," Ruby said to Dorothy as she got up, needing to get ready for work. The storm had passed at some point and birds chirped outside.
Dorothy slow-blinked. "I've got work."
"You'll be late, if not taking the whole day. You're exhausted. Go." Ruby pulled her up from the sofa with ease.
Dorothy groaned. "Lemme call Emma."
"From the bed. I'll check on you later," Ruby said.
"We'll leave you some breakfast, too," Belle replied.
Dorothy gave a tired smile and she kissed Ruby before going to collapse in bed. Ruby texted Emma just in case Dorothy did not remember to do it. Belle started in on breakfast. This felt so right. She hoped it went on forever.
