Once upon a time, there was only one world, a grand kingdom where light shined pure and bright. The people loved the light, and rejoiced in the prosperity it gave them.
Then one day, some people grew to hunger for the light, and wanted to keep it for themselves. Darkness grew in their hearts, and they became Shadows that spread like a plague all across the kingdom. The people of light, terrified of this horrific fate, begged for their king to save them.
Wielding a majestic key of power, the king responded to his citezens calls. He and his army rode into battle, fighting the Shadows with every bit of strength they had in them. However, within three days...it became apparent that nothing could stop this darkness from taking over the kingdom.
In a grey land of desolation, with dark clouds as far as the eye could see, the only life that could be seen...was the black-bodied Shadows that marched forward, converging at one particular point. They were surrounding someone who was kneeling on the ground, breathing heavily from exhaustion.
It was a bearded man whose once regal appearance was tarnished by the dozens of holes and scratches in gold armor. His red fur cape was in taters, barely hanging onto him. The crown perched on his sun red hair had been broken, and the pieces laid at his feet. He looked around with tired, yet still defiant golden eyes, shaking from anger at the Shadows around him.
He could not let them win...even if it cost him the greatest price.
He gripped his most treasured weapon tightly. A magnificent golden key, with a long slender shaft that had a cobalt line running along it. Its phoenix-shaped head glinted in spite of the lack of light. The handle was in the shape of a heart, designed with elaborate curves. Hanging at the base was a keychain, designed in the likeness of a roaring lion.
"You...will not pass." He muttered, raising his key high.
As the Shadows lunged for him, he drove the key into the ground, creating a powerful burst of magic that sent them flying. The king let out a powerful shout as his body shined bright, and the Shadows retreated from such an intense light. The ground started to shake, becoming more intense by the second.
From the king's position, cracks spread along the ground, breaking it apart in huge pieces of land. Grand pillars of light sprung from the broken earth, destroying the Shadows around them.
All across the world, these pillars of light appeared, gradually eliminating the darkness that invaded it. But at the same time, the world was becoming covered in great cracks, and the land was breaking apart...
With his entire being, the king destroyed the forces of darkness. But in the process, his kingdom was broken into many pieces. The one world of light instead became many. These fragmented worlds would gradually be shaped into unique lands of their own, eventually even forgetting the origin of their existence.
And so the light was saved, and the darkness vanquished. However...where there is light, there is darkness. Peace can only last for so long...The question is, what will end it? And who will bring back the light, when darkness takes over once again?

This dream again...Why was it always this dream?
Ray found himself on the top of the city's skyscraper, only he wasn't really in the city. There was nothing but a dark blue void below him, as if it was a hole that would go on forever.
"Jump." Someone said from behind him.
He turned to see him again...a tall man in a black cloak, his face hidden beneath the hood. Ray frowned at him, annoyed by the demand.
"Look, I'm bored with my life, but I don't want to end it like that." He protested. "Why the heck do you want me to jump off a skyscraper?"
"To see if you have a brave heart." The man answered.
Ray sighed in disbelief. "Yep...you're insane. Well, I'm waking up now, so you should g-"
Before he could get out of the dream, the man suddenly pushed him off the edge. Ray screamed as he fell to the void below, and his vision went black.
Darkness was all he could see. Not even wind was whistling in his ears as he continued to fall. Was this what death felt like? It was...frightening.
Then he felt a sudden warmth, and he could see a light below him. His descent slowed as he drew nearer to it, and eventually he saw kind of glass floor. It depicted a white castle, with a golden crown above it.
He landed upright in the center of the floor, and he looked around in confusion.
"This is weird..." He said. "What the heck is this place?"
"This is your Awakening." That man said from behind him.
Ray turned to face him, fists clenched in frustration. What the heck was an Awakening? Did he have to jump off a skyscraper just to land on some glass?
"Are you playing games with me or something?" He questioned. "Because this isn't fun."
"This is no game." The cloaked man said with a shake of his head. "With your Awakening, this galaxy of worlds will have hope."
"Wait, galaxy of worlds? What's that all about?"
"You will see, in due time. For now, arm yourself!"
Ray yelped and stumbled forward as he suddenly felt a stinging pain on his back. He turned to see...some kind of black creature with beady yellow eyes, staring straight at him. Its movements were a bit jerky, and its small claws were outstretched.
It leaped up, swinging at his face. He ducked and ran away, only to face three more of those creatures. They all surrounded him, and he looked around in desperation as he tried to think of something to do about this.
Arm himself...that was what the man said. But where could Ray get a weapon at a time like-
All of a sudden, the creatures were thrown back as a barrier appeared around Ray. Then right in front of him, three pedestals flashed into existence, with a weapon on each of them. A longsword, a shield, and a rod. All with a symbol of a lion in some form.
"Arm yourself, Ray." The man said once again. "Will you be a knight whose sword can cleave through friend and foe alike? A guardian who protects his friends even at the cost of his life? Or a mage whose magic can make miracles happen?"
Ray glanced at the sword. Certainly he could use that sword to cut through those creatures. He didn't want to bother that shield since it was not really a weapon. But the rod...
For a second, his thoughts went to someone he knew. Her teasing smile and her flowing silver hair. Her frilly black dress fluttering around her knees. Gwen...
His eyes narrowed as he became resolved.
"Miracles, huh?" He muttered, stepping toward it. "With magic...I can defeat my foes and protect the one I care about."
He grabbed the rod and took it off the pedestal, which disappeared in a burst of sparkles. The other two followed right after. Behind Ray, the mysterious man chuckled in amusement.
"So, you want to make miracles. You have a long road ahead of you, in that case. Now, prove you have what it takes to make those miracles."
The barrier shattered, and the dark creatures that were waiting behind it leaped at Ray almost immediately. He gasped and ran off, then brandished his rod as they swiftly crawled toward him.
"Back off!" He yelled, swinging it at them.
He struck one, sending it flying back. But the other two melted into the floor and moved to flank him. He tried to circle around, but they followed and leaped out. He yelped as his sides were scratched, sending pain into his body. He fell to one knee, panting a bit.
"Damn..." He groaned. "This sucks..."
"If you have trouble with mere Shadows, then you are not fit to be Awakened." The cloaked man chastised. "Though, what is a mystic without magic...Fine, I will let you borrow a portion of my power."
The man thrust his hand out, and Ray felt a surge of power flow into him. He stood up and looked at himself, then at the lion symbol on the top of his rod. Then he frowned in determination and brandished it at the circling Shadows.
"Fine, I'll show you what I can do!" He declared.
The Shadows sprung out at him, and he dove under as they swung their claws. As they landed, Ray aimed the tip of his rod at them. He felt an unusual energy in his body, ready to be released. But how should he release it...
"Say the spell, Fire!" The mysterious man commanded.
"Fire!" Ray shouted.
He felt his body become heated as the energy came out of his rod, becoming a ball of fire that was shot at the Shadows. It struck them both, bursting upon impact and burning them to a crisp. They became little clouds of smoke, then disappeared entirely.
Ray stared for a moment, then let out a sigh and sat on the floor.
"That's over with..." He said in relief.
The man walked over to him, humming in a thoughtful manner.
"So you do have potential." He mused. "Though you still have a lot to learn before you are ready."
"Ready for what?" Ray asked, raising an eyebrow.
"To go beyond that little world of yours."
The man faded away, and the next thing Ray knew, the glass under him shattered. He fell into the darkness below...and he blacked out.
...
Ray gasped as he awoke, and he quickly sat up and looked around. Then he let out a sigh of relief as he realized he was in his bed, in his room. Morning light filled his room, and he welcomed it after all of the darkness.
"Man, I hate these weird dreams." He muttered, looking at his hand.
Was it a dream though? It had felt so real, even the pain from the scratches. Heck, he still kinda felt it. Skeptical, he held out his hand and tried casting that magic.
"Fire!" He said, trying to channel energy.
He waited a moment...and nothing came out. He shook his head and put the hand on his face, feeling embarrassed now.
"Just another stupid dream..."
He looked at the clock. 7:59...He leaped out of bed, becoming panicked as realized...
"I'm going to be late!" He shouted, running for his closet.
He hastily changed out of his pajamas, then made a quick look in the mirror. His blonde hair was a total case of bedhead, and white jeans with a red shirt and black mini-jacket probably wasn't the best choice of fashion. But he didn't really have time to fix himself up.
He hastily put on his black sneakers, then grabbed his school bag and ran out of the house. He heard his mother shouting at him, but he would deal with her later.
...
Meanwhile, someone else was having a little dream of her own.
One moment, she was looking up at what was once a grand castle, now no more than ruins. Then she was wandering the battleworn halls, seeing the Shadows that patroled them. They paid her no mind, as if they couldn't see her at all.
Then she saw what appeared to be the throne room. Several big holes lined the walls around her. The thone itself was broken, reduced to mere rubble. Behind the remains was...a giant crystal ball, radiating a mysterious, yet familiar energy.
The girl approached the crystal ball, which glowed as if beckoning her to come close. Somehow...she knew this was her destiny, something she had forgotten long ago. Her rightful place was here, in this broken kingdom filled with Shadows. But before she knew it, everything went white as her dream ended there.
