This is the conclusion of what MasakoX has posted so far, and then I get into my own territory. One question I have here, is how old is doctor Briefs supposed to be, seeing as Bulma and Tights are not born yet. I'll take Masakox's word for it.
Gohan was used to a quiet life on Mt. Paozu. Gohan was a skilled martial artist who was starting to get up in years. He certainly was no longer in the prime of his youth, no sir. Gohan was in his late forties nearing fifty. Some ladies might be interested in silver foxes, but most ladies knew he was of the age to be a grandfather. He never found that special someone, he could not be so lucky. Yes, he achieved his childhood dream of being a master martial artist, but his slightly older dream of settling down and having a family seemed impossible at this point.
He lived the hermit's lifestyle, taking residence in a small hut on the mountain, mainly living off the land. During his trips hunting and gathering, he could not help but ponder to himself what life would have been like with a small child to care for.
One day on such a trip, Gohan found something peculiar in the mountain forest. The animals seemed disturbed and anxious, and when Gohan decided to take a closer look at the commotion, what he found perplexed him, as he had never seen anything like it before in his life. At first, he thought it was a meteorite that caused the crater, but upon closer inspection he found this wasn't the case. No, the spherical object which made a huge impact into the ground was made of metal. When Gohan approached the window, he saw that inside was a little girl, sleeping.
How odd, thought Gohan, how could a young girl sleep through a crash like this? Gohan jumped back when the object suddenly opened up with a hiss. The little girl then opened her eyes, rubbing the sleep out of them, waking up to the world around her. She looked at the man before her, staring at him for a moment. Neither of them knew how much this encounter would change both of their lives. At first the little girl retreated a little back into her cushioned seat, regarding Gohan warily. She was nervous, true, but she didn't position herself as a scared little girl. Sitting crouched on the toes of her feet, back arched forward, she looked like a monkey ready to strike at a moment's notice, even more so due to the fact she apparently had a monkey's tail.
She certainly was odd, but Gohan figured everyone was a little odd.
"Well, well," Gohan chuckled. "How did you wind up here little one?" the girl growled a bit in response, like a scared animal. Gohan took another step back, putting his hands up in a sign of peace. As the girl regarded him more, she saw he had a gentle look in his eyes.
"You must be scared and hungry," said Gohan. "Here, I have some apples, go on," he said, and gently placed the fruit by the open entrance of the craft. The girl was still wary, for as far as she knew, this could be a trap. Of course, she had been sleeping a long time, so she was quite hungry. She was still trying to process everything that had happened to her, but in the meantime, she took the fruit and bit into it. It was quite tasty, not harmful at all, quite sweet.
"Do you like it?" asked Gohan. The little girl answered him by scarfing down the rest of the apple voraciously; she then nodded with a beaming grin. Gohan had earned her trust, and she seemed to be quite a happy child, if not a bit hungry.
"Excellent," he said. He believed introductions were in order. "My name is Gohan, what's yours?"
"Gine," she said shyly. She may have been happy for the food, but overall this was still a strange new man in a strange new world, despite him not being a threat.
"That's your name?" said Gohan.
"Yes," said Gine. Another oddity, thought Gohan, as Gine was an unusual name. Gohan had no idea what she was doing in the pod, or where she came from or what happened to her parents. He thought it was more polite not to ask. The girl obviously went through a lot. Something bad must have happened to Gine's life before here, and what child wants to be reminded of that? It may come up later, but for now, Gine needed time to adjust.
Gohan spent some time calming Gine down as she was a ball of nervous energy. Eventually he garnered enough of her trust to get her to exit the pod and walk towards him. Gine looked rather human, despite the tail. It didn't faze him; everything is a bit odd in the world, with animal people and dinosaurs being a thing.
Gohan decided to bring Gine to his house in the mountains, figuring the girl would need a place to stay, at least for a little while. Maybe a few days to get her to warm up to the idea of telling him about her parents and where she came from; he wasn't sure who her parents were, or where Gine could return to, but he knew if he was her mother or father he'd be missing her terribly, worried sick out of his mind.
Gine started to get used this old man's company, trying to wrap her head about what happened and how she ended up where she was. She knew she was a Saiyan, but would she dare tell this kind old man that; what if he knew about Saiyans and their world conquering ways, what if he'd hate her? She knew she was abandoned by her mother for being weak and she lost her father when she was really young; this old man was not trying to get her to prove her worth, he just was…providing for her. It was like she used to provide for the scavengers, but more so, because he was not in the same situation as her. She remembered Bardock…
That's when it came back to her: the pods, the planet, she was in one when a bright light came, she took off, and she fell asleep. She saw Ki guns fire before, the light that came upon the planet was similar to those, and it was destroying everything. Her pack…her mother…Bardock…were they even still alive? It was a lot for Gine to wrap her head around in one night, that everyone she knew before was most likely dead and she was now living on another planet; Gine certainly had trouble sleeping that night. At least the food was good here.
The third day she was with Gohan she suddenly exclaimed to him, "My parents are gone!"
Gohan was surprised. Yes, he had implied concern about her parents with, "Are your parents worried about you?" one night. Gine had said nothing then, she just continued to eat. At the same time though, Gine didn't sound depressed; it sounded like she was stating a fact.
"You've been wondering about them," said Gine. "They've been gone for years."
"Oh, I see," said Gohan. "Do you have any other family?"
Gine shook her head; none that she knew of. She could've called her pack her family, but at times they were more a team striving towards a similar goal. Even if they were, they're most likely dead.
Gohan pondered to himself; despite not being in his prime anymore he could still take care of himself well with no other distractions. This little creature needed someone to help her, she needed to be taken care of, just until she learned to adapt to life in this land.
"Tell you what, if you have nowhere else to stay, you can live here with me, Gine. Would you like that?"
Gine wasn't sure; this man could still be a threat deep down. He didn't seem to know about Saiyans, as he didn't react to her tail at all; but what if he knew about her people's history? Worse, what if it was her mother all over again, where she wasn't good enough for him and he kicked her out? Then again, he's been trustworthy so far, and she really needed a place to stay; she really didn't want to wander again. She wanted a sense of stability in the chaos that her life had now become. She reluctantly found herself nodding, but then she smiled. She really wanted this, and hoped that she could now have it.
She was thus adopted by Gohan. After that moment she became a much happier child. In only a few months she was calling Gohan "Grandpa" and "Gramps," she came to see him as her actual grandfather, never knowing any of her own. The feeling was mutual, despite meeting not too long ago, Gohan had felt that he had known and loved Gine her entire life. As for her age, Gine didn't really know thanks to being abandoned. Gohan guessed she was six or seven years old, since Gine wasn't mourning her parents anymore he guessed seven.
Gine became a lot more talkative and curious, of course she never mentioned anything prior to before she met her Grandpa, as she hoped to leave that life behind, close that sad chapter of her life and open a new happier one. Instead she wanted to learn everything she could about her new home world. Gohan did his best to teach her. He admired how she was so happy with everything she could learn.
He also learned that Gine was capable of some incredible feats, such as a knack for learning martial arts. Gine was at first hesitant to learn how to fight. Gohan could tell she was a gentle child, but he was determined to at least teach her a few moves so she wasn't completely helpless on her own. Despite her hesitance, she took to it like a duck to water. Marital arts came naturally to her. Seeing her grandfather do new moves she hadn't seen before, her curious mind grew eager to learn them, and soon she was able to learn marital arts just by watching her gramps. Gine was obviously a very smart child.
Gohan decided to formally homeschool her, instead of just answering her whenever she had a question. She could learn things a lot faster this way. He taught her how to read, write and do arithmetic, buying some basic math books from a nearby town. Gine soon figured out what her actual age was.
One night, things took a drastic turn for Gine's peaceful life. She had a terrible nightmare, feeling Saiyan bloodlust pounding in her head and heart, hearing the crashing of trees, the scared chittering of the animals, the terrified yelling of her grandfather, and the image of a full moon. Gine had never seen a full moon before, not before that night where she had her nightmare. You see, it happens every eight years on Vegetea, but Gine was not allowed outside yet being an infant, and even so it was still a cloudy night. For some reason it was giving her a terrifying and quite vivid nightmare. After hours of tossing and turning, she woke up to find herself covered in blankets, with Grandpa Gohan next to her bed. He was both scared and injured.
"Grampy, I had such a terrible dream! What happened?" She looked at his face, trying to calm down.
"Gine, we…were attacked by a monster…but it's alright…it's gone."
It wasn't a great explanation, but Gramps was able to lull her back to sleep eventually. After that night, Gohan got better curtains for the windows. He also warned Gine, never to look at the full moon, or else the monster would appear again. Gine didn't question it, how was she supposed to know how monsters worked. Gine's tail was apparently lost in the attack, but Gine was confident it would grow back. She had seen this happen to a scavenger once; it came back in about a year. Sure enough, it did.
Gohan was lucky to survive that night. Gine had wandered outside and he found her staring at the full moon. When he tried to get her attention he found her eyes were glowing red, and she then transformed into a terrifying great ape which would do nothing but attempt to destroy everything in its path. He had once grabbed Gine's tail before in a joking manner to keep her from running off, and that was when he found out it caused her great pain. So he had grabbed her by the tail and refused to let go; eventually the thing was pried off in the great ape's attempt to get free and Gine returned to normal.
Gohan knew the monster wasn't Gine, and he realized Gine didn't know about this part of herself. What happened to Gine to get her cursed like this? He felt conflicted though, he could easily just remove her tail every time it grew back, but he couldn't for two reasons. The first was if he did he'd have to explain why and that meant explaining she could turn into a rampaging monster; this would make Gine hate herself or be terrified of herself. The second reason was that the tail helped determine Gine's strength, without it she was slightly weaker, and with it she was considerably stronger. He didn't want to put Gine at a disadvantage just to keep everyone else safe.
Another mysterious thing about living with Gohan was the four-stared orb that sat on the mantle place. Gine wondered how it was so important; it just sat there gathering dust. Her Grandpa Gohan would tell her stories about that orb. Legends say that there are more of them out them, each with a number of stars inside them. Legends also say the orbs have magic powers, yet he wasn't sure how to access said powers (which she told Gine when she immediately tried to get it to work). Gohan told Gine it was his sacred duty to guard this orb from nasty, selfish people who would use it for evil. Gine was not entirely sure what the difference between people was, she only really had a few people to go off of, mostly her grandfather for reference. She could not imagine what a nasty or selfish wish could even be. Of course, her limited knowledge on other people was about to change.
One day, when Gine was eleven years old, a weird middle aged man suddenly appeared. Gine and her grandfather were gathering firewood when the man had appeared. He had waited outside for the residents to return home.
"Excuse me," said the man when they returned. "I know this might sound weird to you, but I'm looking for objects called Dragon Balls."
Gohan looked for the man in a mistrustful manner. Dragon balls…that was one of the names the orbs had according to legend. Could this be a selfish person hoping for a wish?
"Why are you pursuing these objects?"
"Oh where are my manners," said the man. "My name is Brief and I'm a scientist. To be honest, I've always wanted to research these mythical objects you know. Apparently they can grant wishes, if you believe in that sort of thing." Gine blinked twice.
"Grant wishes? Grandpa you never told me they could grant-oh," said Gine watching herself.
"It's alright little one," said Gohan. "Dr. Briefs was it?" The scientist nodded. "Do you really want to learn the secrets of the Dragon balls?"
"Oh I would love to! You see, I'm quite a successful scientist myself, and there are very few things I- wait, what are you doing?!" Gohan was in a battle ready stance.
"Well, if you want our dragon ball, you're going to have to earn it."
Emperor Glacier was looking over his battle map, looking quite decrepit, unsatisfied with the state of his empire. Neither of his sons were ready to take his place, Ice showed some promise but he was more focused on the military side of things, Cold however…
"You wanted to see me father," said Cold upon his slow entry to the observation deck.
"I was looking through some of your territories. Why are some of your planets not fully annexed into the empire?" Cold stood proud and explained.
"I use them to their fullest so we can profit from them, make use of their existence; sell them to refugees or businesses. I don't see the need of fully controlling the populace myself, that would be inefficient when I could easily, much more easily, control their economy."
"And what, act like a travelling salesman? Haven't I taught you nothing, boy? You do not DEAL with lesser people! You do not give them a platform to feel that they are in any way equal to you! And this is precisely…even after all these year…you're still not ready! At this rate, I'll die in this very chair!" Cold would not let this slide, not this time.
"If you are so determined to keep the throne from me, why not just give the throne to Ice and be done with it, if he's so perfect in your eyes!?" The emperor glared at his side, but said nothing. He wanted to silence him for his impertinence, but at least he had some effect on his progeny.
"So," Glacier chuckled. "You decided to develop a spine. Alright, alright, how was your meeting with Vegeta the third?" Glacier was acting like the previous spat never happened.
"Our Saiyan invasion force are pretty scattered, but they still bring home the bacon. According to the last estimates, we-I mean you,- will be in possession of three new planets in the coming week."
"See, I told you that reduction would work miracles; and Prince Vegeta is way easier to control than his parents." There was a bit of triumph in how Glacier worded that sentence.
"We could have had many more planets under us without that reduction of yours," said Cold.
"True, true, yes true, but it was also holding back a possible rebellion, then they would all have to be slaughtered. Do you have any idea how many resources we would have to use to crush something as ridiculous as an uprising?"
"I'm pretty sure you're an expert on that, father," jabbed Cold.
"Watch your clever mouth, Cold! I've allowed your mewling to slide once today, but don't try your luck." Cold bowed slightly, visibly irritated. "One day, either you or Ice will thank me for everything I taught you about ruling your empire. Transactions are not how we do things son, we do not give anything, we take everything, and you need to be fully aware of that."
Cold wasn't listening, as he was getting really tired of that old point of view, and he desperately hoped that one day that breathing mask of Glacier's would malfunction, with or without his help.
Brief was absolutely stunned.
"I'm…sorry, I'm not a warrior. I cannot fi-watch the glasses!" Dr. Briefs was trying to avoid Gohan's attacks.
"Then how do you plan to protect the Dragon balls from evil people; those who would seek to take them and use them for selfish wishes?!"
"I just want to gather them for scientific resear-oof!"
"These objects can be very dangerous. If they get into the wrong hands, what will you do then?"
Brief looked at him puzzled.
"Wrong hands? Listen, I don't know what you mean. The superstitions are clearly not real…are they?" Gohan scoffed, and prepared another attack.
"Gramps!" cried Gine. She couldn't take it, why attack a helpless man? He taught her martial arts so she would not be helpless, not to hurt those that were. "Stop! Please, he's scared."
"Oh ho," said Gohan slyly. "I know little one, I meant to scare him. If I could do that, just think about all the other evil people out there; they could easily take the Dragon ball from him. Besides, there's no way he knows how to find the other ones."
"Oh I have one with me already," said Dr. Briefs. He reluctantly reached his hand into his hand bag and pulled out the two-star Dragon ball for Gine and Gohan to see.
"Is this…it really is," said Gohan surprised.
"I found it as a young man, on the first date with who is now my wife. We thought it was a giant pearl at first when it washed up on the beach, but no. It took me many years to find out who it was. Finding the rest will be easy, for I built a device that will help me find them lickitty split, based on their energy signature."
"You did what?" asked Gohan.
"I built a radar," said Dr. Briefs. "It shows where the others are." Grandpa Gohan blanched.
"You could just track them…with your blasted technology?"
"Is that a problem?" Gohan sighed.
"Listen, you are completely unprepared for such a journey. It's only you and your van, do you know how dangerous it would be to find the other dragon balls?"
Gine sensed adventure, and it stirred her Saiyan spirit. She looked between the two men, and poked her grandpa.
"Maybe we can help him?"
"Gine," he said to her with concern for her big heart, about to tell her that young girls shouldn't go off on dangerous journeys.
"Think about it Grandpa, he obviously means no harm with the Dragon Balls. If he does, we can stop him. Besides we're not going to be able to stop him from searching for them anyway. This way we can make sure he doesn't get hurt and no one steals them from him."
Gohan pondered her words and looked at her tail. Maybe…the Dragon balls could be their solution, freeing Gine of her curse. She'd be able to look at the full moon without turning into a monster.
"Alright," said Gohan. "I'll give you my Dragon ball, on the condition that we accompany you as your bodyguards."
"Of course, of course," said Dr. Briefs. "The more the merrier, of course pardon me but…an old man and a small girl, how could you possibly…"
He was interrupted with the sight of Gine lifting up his van, curious as to what it was.
"You were saying something," said Gohan, smiling at Gine. "As you can see, we're more capable than we appear to be." Dr. Briefs was speechless for a moment, but regained his composure.
"Umm…welcome aboard then, it will be nice not to travel alone."
Thus started the journey of Gine, and the quest to find the mythical wish-granting Dragon Balls.
Ta-Da! Here I am hoping that Dr. Briefs isn't too old so them being alive in Super makes sense. Again, taking his word for it. Now to do this episode by episode, well the next will be two episodes as we already went a little into episode one. You get the idea, enough content to fill up as much as I've written for each chapter so far. Until then...stay tuned!
