Story Start!
It happened.
'There isn't any electricity, and the humvee isn't even starting.' Naruto sighed to himself as he sat in the now useless humvee. Most cars now ran on computers built into them, and Naruto would guess that an EMP was sent out over Japan that knocked out, fried, things that ran on computers. The electricity was gone, which would be more of a problem in winter than it was at the moment.
Well, the electricity was gone, but it could be recovered with the gas generators and some electrical work to get them on the main building. The entire city had gotten way more quiet now that the buzz of electricity was gone, it was an strange silence.
No electricty, no freezer.
That meant soon enough their food that could easily spoil, would spoil, and they would have a drastic drop in food stores. He jumped over the wall and back onto the school grounds, since the humvee was completely useless. Naruto saw Saya was waiting for him with her arms crossed, and she seemed like she had some clue what was going on.
"So, it was an EMP that knocked everything out then." Saya stated as she showed her phone was powered off, and just not working. She checked her phone on a regular basis just to see if she could get a signal to call her home, but when she woke up she tried, and got nothing. She asked the others to check their phones, Saeko didn't have a phone to check. In the end, everyone who had a phone noted that their phones seemed to be busted.
She was the one who knew what it meant.
"Yeah, the humvee is dead. I can look at the cars in the parking lot, to see which ones can be salvaged." Naruto told her, and he went to go and do just what he was saying. While it was true an EMP could knock out everything like phones with ease, many cars were actually build to be able to resist an EMP to some degree. The humvee wasn't built for it, but with any luck Naruto could get what he needed from other cars to fix it.
Saya followed him.
"Electricity is gone too, if you're smart at all you would know that the food we have won't last more than a week or two at most other than the canned goods." Saya stated to Naruto. She was just saying what he already knew at this point. He didn't know if she was trying to help or not, but he forced the hood of one of the cars opened.
'This car is good to drive, but I can't use the parts to fix the humvee... and this car can't fit all of us inside if it needs to.' Naruto just looked at the car, and saw it could comfortably seat 4 people.
Himself, Kohta, Saeko, Rei, Kiriko, Maresato, Alice, Saya, Shizuka, and his fox Kurama. That was 8 people and a fox, there was no way that the tiny car he was looking at would be able to fit all of them inside.
"Power tools and other electronics should be fine to use if we can charge them, but anything with a computer inside will be screwed." Saya continued to explain the situation he already knew to him. He glanced back at her with a raised eyebrow, and she crossed her arms. "You're so stupid, what I'm trying to say is that the school isn't a good place to stay anymore." Saya stated to Naruto.
Naruto sighed.
"The school doesn't have running water, but it has enough clean drinking water for a year. We can always go out and get more canned goods, but without the humvee we can't carry enough back to last more than a few days." Naruto didn't agree with her on the idea that the school was suddenly an unsafe place. With the bus lodged in front of the school's gate, there was not a high chance of zombies pushing their way through the now powerless gate.
"Oh ho." Saya was interested in his response. "... So you CAN explain your reasoning." Saya watched Naruto open another car up.
"What?"
"Shido and his group, he had a point. You don't really explain why you make us do meaningless tasks. Some stuff like laundry, water, and gathering up fabrics and bedding make sense... but you had Shido's group just digging a trench around the school... why?" Saya wanted a proper answer. She wanted to know why Naruto didn't explain that. Some things he had them do just made logical sense that anyone could figure out they were important.
Takashi burying the charred corpses was a morale issue, since seeing a stack of corpses constantly wouldn't be good for anyone's nerves. The trench around the school just didn't make any logical sense.
"I wanted to keep them busy. There wasn't some great purpose to it... I mean, it might stop zombies from getting into the main school building if they broke in." Naruto did have a reason it might help, but the trench wasn't needed for it.
"Busy work." Saya raised her brows.
"Yeah. I couldn't always be here to prevent Shido from brainwashing the dumber people, but I hoped keeping them busy would work at stopping Shido from messing with them. In the couple of days I was gone, he got in their heads... how is Komuro?" Naruto asked Saya, since she was asking him a lot of questions about his logic. She seemed to be prying to try and figure out if he was worthy to remain leader. His leadership being questioned with such a small group didn't bother him though.
"I-"
"I'm fine." Takashi had been listening in. He was sitting on the other side of the cars. "Was the hole I was digging busy work... because I was a dumb person?" Takashi asked Naruto as he stood up. He walked up to Naruto, but stayed a good distance away from him to not be rude either.
Naruto sighed.
"No, it served a purpose. There were a lot of charred zombie bodies, and it isn't good for everyone to see and smell them all the time. I was planning to use the spot they were buried to grow crops... but that was thrown out the window." Naruto didn't see the point in it at this point. They just didn't have the numbers needed to keep up with multiple crops and continue all the other work that needed to be done.
Takashi frowned and looked away, before he looked Naruto in his eyes again.
There was still dislike in them, Takashi didn't like Naruto, but there was an amount of respect there.
'He resents me, but he still wants to try and work with me... I guess the news of his parents made his current situation really sink in for him.' Naruto finished inspecting the car. The car he looked at currently was fried, and while some parts would work, it was just a useless hunk of metal at the moment. "I'm going to try my luck at a nearby dealership, see if I can find a truck that withstood the EMP." Naruto stated, and he knew he was going to be gone for a few hours.
"A truck?"
"Some cars are naturally EMP-proof, with any luck I can find a truck large enough to fit everyone in it and supplies for supply runs. I might be gone for a day or two. If I find a truck, I'm going to go and get supplies from a nearby mall." Naruto stated, before he whistled. He called Kurama right to him, and the fox climbed up his body and got onto his shoulder. "Kurama, go and check the nearby malls. If there are survivors and the malls are well defended, come back to me right away." Naruto gave his order, and the fox was tossed onto the top of the school wall.
Saya stepped in front of Naruto.
"You're going out alone, again?" Saya asked Naruto with her natural frown turned into a more angry face.
"It would just be quicker. I'm faster than anyone here, and stronger. I don't need guns, or weapons, to protect myself."
"I can fight too you know... you can rely on me. I'm a man too." Takashi got closer to Naruto and insisted. Naruto stepped back when Takashi got too close for comfort. He looked at the younger man with a little surprise to see him trying to take a more active role now. "... Sorry... I..."
"Do you want to explain where this enthusiasm is coming from?" Naruto asked.
He was a little curious.
"... I've been acting like a spoiled brat. You've been working hard to protect all of us... and I never really tried to help you. I can't stand you, but..." Takashi was trying to find the right words to explain how he was feeling. "... no... I know it's wrong to dislike you... I'm sorry. You're trying to help... but... we should be trying to help you." Takashi showed a little growth.
He just needed some time to think.
Naruto had tried to find and save his parents, but Naruto had also been trying to find everyone's families and help them. Naruto was only a single man, and he failed to save people because nobody had been there to help him out. He couldn't help but wonder if his parents would have been saved if only he went with Naruto in the first place, to make getting Kiriko convinced easier.
He still disliked Naruto, but he could understand that Naruto also meant him no harm at all.
"You're both so stupid, just kiss and make up already, we have more serious things to talk about... like the very real food situation we're going to face sooner or later." Saya changed the subject and returned it to something that they could all agree was important.
Survival.
"Well, considering we're in Japan, and we aren't exactly great on farmland..." Naruto paused after saying that. His pause and sudden thoughtful look on his face confused both the other teens, who looked at Naruto with concern. He reached up and covered his mouth in thought, before he started to pace around. 'Right... this IS Japan. There are plenty of small little villages that are locked a way from urban areas by mountains and cliffs. Those places might not have been hit at all.
In small villages like that, they didn't have the luxury of relying on modern appliances for the most part, and often they would have their own small farms for crops and animals. It would be a village that was not only mostly unaffected by the zombie plague, but was far enough away from everyone that it might be safe.
"He's deep in thought." Takashi noted.
"I didn't know he was capable of deep thought. HEY! Don't just ignore my question!" Saya kicked Naruto in the shin to get his attention. He turned and faced her, before he smiled and gave her a bear hug. "HEY!" Saya blushed from the sudden hug, but before she could push him off he let go of her.
"I'll be back in a day, maybe two. Now we REALLY need to find a truck." Naruto stated as he began to run towards the wall around the school to hop it.
"HEY!"
"Have everyone gather important stuff that they can pack. Canned food, blankets, and cover those buckets of water with lids!" Naruto shouted out with a great grin. Before anyone could stop him, he was gone.
-The Next Day-
Naruto had found one.
'Awesome, awesome, awesome... after a full night's work, I managed to get this one up and running.' Naruto thought to himself as he looked at his own personal success.
An RV.
It was big enough to fit 4 people with comfort, but 8 people could fit inside of it if need be. It would be uncomfortable, but it would get everyone where they needed to go. He managed to attach a small moving trailer to the back of the RV as well, so it could hold the supplies they would get from the mall they visited. Naruto had been looking for a truck, but with an RV he would manage far greater.
The GPS was fried still, and so were quite a few of the luxuries of the RV itself. The AC system in the back of the RV was also fried. Still, the engine worked just fine and the front started.
"I wonder if I have enough time to take the front bumpers from those trucks, and put them on the RV..." Naruto questioned as he looked at the cage-style bumpers from the trucks. The more protection for the RV the better. Naruto had already stolen the car batteries from MANY of the cars in the lot, and had them in stored away for potential future uses.
You never knew when a car battery would come in handy.
*SMASH*
Like as a weapon.
Naruto smashed a zombie that was approaching him right on the skull with a car battery, and just put it down. Still, they had more uses than just as weapons.
"Time to go check out the mall."
-The Next Day-
"That looks much nicer... a nice, full storage unit." Naruto sighed to himself with satisfaction. He had gotten to the mall, and he had managed to fully look the back of the moving unit with all the canned goods he could get from the mall. He even found winter jackets, though it was still spring and they wouldn't be needed for awhile. What was more was that Naruto had gotten his hands on a ton of bottled water.
Also, there survivors at the mall.
"Are you sure you want to come with me?" A young woman close to his age asked.
"You're the one coming with me though." Naruto deadpanned. The girl was a nervous wreck, though she was a police officer. She didn't carry a gun, and was a newly graduated officer. There were plenty of survivors that she had decided to take care of. For a 19 year old, she was barely taller than 5 feet.
For a girl about his age, she seemed a couple of years younger thanks to her demeanor.
"Oh... once we find a rural village, we'll come back for the others, right?"
"Bitch, we don't want you to come back. You're been useless since you showed up."
"I'll come back and see what I can do." Naruto whispered to the police officer. The group of survivors that she was protecting didn't respect her at all. They respected the other policewoman much more than they did her.
Asami Nakaoka.
"Thank you Asami, I'll look after everyone here... the undead are coming, we better go back in the mall." The superior woman saluted her junior, who saluted back. She followed Naruto into the RV. "Don't worry about coming back, I plan to go and get help personally once everyone is settled down."
"Okay!"
-20 Minutes Later-
'Well... I guess there will be 9 people in the RV now instead of 8.' Naruto was driving, while Asami was sitting next to him silently.
"So... uh..."
"Listen, I hate to say this to you... but I'm the one in charge now. You might be a police officer, but society has collapsed now. Please don't go trying to take command. Still, I'm happy for you to join us Asami." Naruto reached out and grabbed her shoulder instead of shaking her hand. He let go and returned to driving. "When we get to the school, I'm going to have you work together with Kohta... he will give you a gun, you CAN use a gun right?"
"I'm not the most skilled, but I was trained a little." Asami explained her level of skill.
She did not inspire confidence.
"Okay, that works for me. Don't worry, I'm sure that other woman will do just fine in protecting those survivors. As long as they don't panic, they should be fine." Naruto smiled at her, and he helped set her mind at ease. Naruto looked in the side mirror at the mall, and his smile slipped for a moment.
There would be no survivors by the time Naruto came back.
The next time Naruto visited this mall, it would be purely because he wanted supplies from the mall, and no other reason. Just one look at the survivors would tell you that they would get themselves killed in a matter of days.
"Yip."
"Thanks Kurama, you're my little buddy." Naruto's fox licked his cheek and yipped at him. Kurama had tracked the scent of survivors, and that was what led him to the mall in the first place. His trained pet had been one of the most important things related to the survival of others, and the finding of more supplies. "We couldn't do it without you."
At least not easily.
"So, you train animals?" Asami asked Naruto.
"A few. I've trained my fair share of animals. Kurama here is the 9th animal I've trained, and he is the smartest of them all." Naruto complimented his fox. He had trained 8 other types of animals for his own amusement growing up, but Kurama had become more than just a trained pet. Over the years his fox had become a trusted partner that he could rely on. "There are some clothes in the back, change into those... don't go telling anyone you're a police officer." Naruto changed the subject.
Officers were a form of authority, and Naruto didn't want the group to be split between the authority of an officer, and his authority as a leader. He didn't know Asami very well, and didn't know if power would go to her head like Shido. It would just be better for everyone involved if nobody knew what her profession was.
His hands tightened on the steering wheel.
"Okay, honestly, this uniform is kind of stuffy."
'Yeah, and it makes it harder for me to relax too.' Naruto was just not comfortable around police officers in general, seeing as he was a lot of bad run-ins with officers, and corrupt officers, during his younger years. His nerves would be on edge as long as she was in uniform. Asami went to the back to start to change.
...
'She's got small tits. After seeing the school girls, I forgot what small tits looked like... Hinata had pretty huge ones.' Naruto had glanced in the mirror, and he saw Asami in her bra... her very small bra. She looked like she was an A-cup at the most. Naruto looked back at the road though, his small moment of curiousity was over. 'Still, she's cute. She won't have much trouble getting a guy to like her.' Naruto smiled slightly.
"You aren't peeking, right?"
"Nope, I'm not peeking." Naruto confirmed for her, and she looked at the front to see his eyes were on the road. 'Well, I took a peek... but I'm not exactly peeking now.' Naruto thought to himself. He didn't really feel bad about his quick peek.
"You don't even have the urge to peek, right?"
"Oh, the urge is there, but I'm not peeking." Naruto deadpanned at her.
"Good! Good, because peeking is bad... You shouldn't peek." Asami was happy that he found her attractive enough to have the urge to peek. When Naruto had said he wasn't peeking, she had felt like she wasn't attractive enough for a guy to want to peek at her. "My boyfriend broke up with me because I'm not a great officer, it feels nice to feel cute."
"Well, you are cute. Still, I'm sorry, but don't expect me to hit on you. I'm still working over my own... break up."
"Oh, did you and your girlfriend break up before the zombie stuff?" Asami was starting to get dressed.
"No, and she wasn't my girlfriend, she was my fiance. She got bitten, and she asked me to kill her. I'm not really ready to try and start dating again just yet. I dated Hinata since I was 15 and in high school... we were together for 5 years." Naruto had spent a lot of time with Hinata before he put her down, an entire 5 years of dating her. It took a ton of effort for him to convince her father that they belonged together, and he had gotten his blessing to marry her.
"Oh... I'm sorry for your loss." Asami apologized.
"Don't apologize. My Hinata never became a zombie, she got to die a human... she wouldn't have wanted me to see her become a monster. I'm going to keep living on, and keep helping others, in her memory." Naruto flexed his arm, driving with one hand. "Do you have any family, we can stop and see if we can pick them up."
...
"Birds of a feather flock together." Naruto stated when she was silent. It was obvious what that silence meant, and he understood it well enough. He wasn't going to apologize. "Whoops, I peeked." Naruto teased her to lighten up the mood.
"HEY!"
"Whoopsie daisey, when you shouted it made me look at you... better hurry up and get dressed. My fiance had massive boobs, but I think small boobs are cute too."
"EEP! You jerk!"
...
"Heheheh." Asami giggled under her breath when she saw Naruto stucking his tongue out while driving. She wasn't really that mad he peeked, since he clearly did it to lighten the mood, and it worked. She felt a lot less depressed. "... just don't peek again please." Asami was okay with how he lightened the mood, but she still would rather he not peek if he could help it.
She wondered if the other survivors he was taking care of were as nice as he was.
