Story Start!
It was his duty.
'Group of Undead, 340 meters South, South-East of the school... 3 Undead at the School Gates, attracted to the sound of Busujima showing Komuro how to better use his bat.' Kohta looked out over as much of the city as he could see from the top of the school building with his snifer rifle. He didn't take any shots at all, since no shots needed to be taken. He didn't have the ammo to take out every zombie in the city, and he hadn't been ordered to shoot.
He was glad that Naruto took over.
He got guns, and now he got to put his years of hobbying and training to good use. Naruto treated him with respect, and ordered him to do his part in his own way. He felt at peace, and he looked down at the school grounds and saw everyone who he was helping to protect. He wasn't down there doing hard physical work like Takashi was, and he wasn't keeping everyone fed and clean like Maresato was either.
He was bird up above them, watching over them.
He felt like a soldier following orders, and it gave him purpose. He wasn't just the fat, short, otaku that he had been at school that got bullied. He had a commander, and he was a soldier. He was respected, and could easily kill.
"Captain is back..." Kohta realized when he saw an RV pull up to the side of the school, and it was big enough that it could fit everyone. Naruto got out of the RV through the sun roof, before he jumped over the wall. Kohta saw a girl a few years older than him get out of the RV as well, and she jumped the wall.
Naruto caught her, because she couldn't land on her feet properly.
'I'm going to do whatever I can to follow him.' Kohta was going to guess that Naruto had got the RV, because they weren't going to be staying at the school. He would assume that was why a lot of their supplies had been brought to the front of the school, and why Saeko had been taking buckets of water with lids to the gate as well. He blinked when Naruto made "eye contact" with him, and waved for him to abandon his post.
Kohta started to gather up all of his guns.
-Hours Later-
"Okay, the 4 of us will push... Shizuka, drive." Naruto had his hands on the bus that was blocking the school gate. Kohta and Takashi were side by side with him as well, and Maresato had joined them even though he wasn't told to.
They needed to get the RV in the school, and to do that they needed to unblock the gate... which was blocked by a bus that would not start. Naruto managed to shift it into neutral, and he broke the front windows so that he could tie some chains from the bus to one of the working cars. The most they could do at this point was hope that with a car pulling the bus, and 4 of them pushing it, that they could get the bus moved.
"Shouldn't we help?" Rei whispered to Saeko.
"Once the bus is moved, we're going to have to open the gate as quickly as possible so that the new woman can drive the RV into the front yard." Saeko knew it was going to take multiple people to open the gates, just like it would take multiple people pushing the bus.
"Rrrrr." Naruto groaned in effort with the other guys.
The bus was moving very slowly, and once it was moved out of the way the girls rushed behind them to open the gates. It was slow, but once it was open the RV was driven right into the school yard. With the RV in the walls, the gate was closed back up to give everyone time to catch their breath before they would load it.
"Won't... all this noise attract them?"
"Yeah, zombies will come and investigate the sound. Those gates are hard to move though, by the way the zombies can open them, Kurama will start drawing them away." Naruto was going to have Kurama go out and make a lot of noise once they were ready to leave, to draw away any possible zombies that would show up from the noise they just made.
Takashi looked at Naruto, before looking away when they made eye contact. Instead he looked at the new woman Asami as she left the RV with a happy smile.
"So, what is the plan?" Saya asked Naruto.
"We're loading up and heading out. By the way Saya, I went by the Takagi mansion... your home was overrun with zombies, but I saw your parents escaping alive." Naruto mentioned that to her. He couldn't rescue them, but he had seen them alive. A woman that looked similar to Saya and an older man with her. He had some good news for her that took priority over telling her his plans. "Forgot to mention it before..."
"Whatever, you should have said so sooner, but it's fine. I don't think my parents are going to die that easily." Saya forgot what she had been asking when she got that news.
Everyone caught their breath.
They worked for about 20 minutes.
"Hey... this isn't big enough for the 9 of us to all fit inside." Rei brought up the point. There were only 2 beds, 2 seats up front, and a small living area where people could sit down and eat. There really wasn't enough room for everyone to stay without rubbing bodies with one another.
"Shizuka and me are going to stay in the driver and passenger's seat, since we're the oldest and hopefully best drivers... oh... can you drive Maresato?" Naruto asked the older man, who waved his hand and shook his head. The older man was still extremely exhausted from pushing the bus with all of his might.
"No, have a license but never had a car, always take the bus to work."
"Yeah, that's pretty normal." Naruto stated, since Japan was pretty huge on public transportation. 90% of adults had licenses, but only a fraction of them had actual experience driving on the road. Shizuka had her own car, and Naruto had years of experience (both illegal and legal) driving motorcycles and cars alike. Naruto looked at Asami, he let her drive the RV into the school, but he didn't know her experience level.
"I can drive, but I'm not super good at it."
"Guys... come on... why is it the only people here who are good drivers... are the ones who are mix-breeds?" Naruto pointed to himself and Shizuka. The only blond haired people in the group.
"I can drive a motorcycle." Kiriko didn't agree with his joke.
"Can you drive a car?"
"Nope."
"Point proven, well, I guess if us blonds are dumb, at least we can drive. Okay everyone, we might as well take all the clothes and bedding." Naruto got to work just bring stuff into the RV again. He just tossed the clothes to the floor, since the inside of the RV didn't need to be clean or anything. Naruto glanced and saw a few, very small number, of zombies had gathered at the front gate. They were reaching inside through the bars, but were in a small enough number to not even budge the gate at all.
"Hey, I'm a teacher, I'm not dumb."
"Okay, us blonds are airheads." Naruto changed the wording when Shizuka took offense. He actually got laughs out of some people when he joked around. It would seem the presense of the RV and the idea of leaving the school had brought out a lighter mood in everyone overall. 'Right... I didn't really let anyone leave... this school wasn't a safe place... it was closer to a prison.' Naruto sighed to himself.
He was still learning.
In trying to keep everyone safe, he didn't let them go out where it was dangerous. He made them stay at the school, and mostly in the main building of the school. He had kept them alive, but he was now seeing their smiling faces. While they were alive before, they were jailed and confined. Some people like Saeko, and Rei surprisingly, took to being confined in the school rather well so long as they were safe.
Others like Takashi and Saya took poorly to feeling confined to school.
"Naruto-chan-"
"Alice, be a little more respectful." Maresato got onto his daughter for calling somebody older than her with such a casual name. Naruto just waved it off since it didn't bother him. Alice was bringing books along with her, and just wanted to know if she was allowed to take them. Naruto had to think about it.
"... Sure, you can bring them." Naruto rubbed the top of her head.
'He seems... a little more relaxed... that's good.' Rei sighed when she noticed that there was still tension in the air between Naruto and Takashi. Takashi didn't seem like he was in quite the same bad mood as before, but there was still an awkward air between them. It was a tension that felt like there was resentment under the surface. 'Maybe I should give him a 3rd chance to man up after all.' Rei looked at Takashi with an unsure look.
Part of her wanted to give up on him and move on, but the part of her that did still love Takashi couldn't quite let her just give up. She looked over at Naruto, and she saw him showing kindness to a child. The Naruto before was hard to approach, but he was super manly... and now he was still super manly, but it seemed much easier to approach. Takashi was kind of hard to approach, and he still wasn't man'ing up just yet.
It was hard for her.
Naruto was the better man.
Yet, her heart didn't want to give up on Takashi yet.
"Naruto, I've got a question... do we have an actual destination?" Saeko was going to follow Naruto no matter what his answer was. Her question did alert some people to the issue, and they looked to Naruto.
"... We do, we have several possible places. Saeko, I figured we could start off by stopping by the dojo your father lives, see if he is still there." Naruto mentioned the first place he wanted to go.
Her grip on her sword tightened.
"Oh... thank you." Saeko didn't know what to say. She looked at Naruto more shyly, her cheeks were red. "... and then what?" Saeko became more serious again when she realized the others were staring at her.
"Well, road trip to find a small village that hasn't been hit too hard. The countryside is our best bet, and... well these are dead bodies. If we survive long enough, the zombie problem should take care of itself." Naruto could see the zombies just decomposing. "I'm not going to get anyone's hopes up. Maybe the zombies will decompose, maybe they won't anytime soon. Still, a small village is our best bet." Naruto nodded his head again.
He was satisfied with the answer he gave.
"So... we have no destination?"
"No, we have MANY possible destinations. It's hard to pick one. We'll go to the places Ine and Shirakawa that had between 1,000 and 2,000 people in them. Super small towns Soni and Kawakami... and Oshika... there are PLENTY of places to choose from." Naruto wanted to pick the smaller towns simply because even if they did become infested, it would be a lot easier for them to take care of the problem and make the town a place to live.
Better to have a ton of places you could go, rather than just a single place you were planning to go.
-10 Minutes Later-
It was a little cramped.
Saya and Rei were both forced to sit on the floor, Alice, her father, and Kohta were all on one of the beds together. Kiriko was sitting at the kitchen table with Saeko and Takashi, and Asami was just awkwardly on the floor near the back of the RV. Naruto was driving, and Shizuka was in the passenger seat next to him.
"Naruto, we're on the sidewalk, it's against the law to drive on the sidewalk." Shizuka told Naruto.
"Shizuka, I will have you sit back there and Asami can join me up here if you keep telling me how to drive. There are cars parked in the middle of the road, we are taking the sidewalk when we have to." Naruto was starting to get annoyed.
"You might hit-"
"Asami, come replace Shizuka, Shizuka, go and sit in the back." Naruto's statement got some laughs from the back as Shizuka and Asami switched places.
"We are almost there?"
"It is a 3 hour drive, add 2 hours because of the weird traffic. We have been driving, for 12 minutes now. If you guys are bored, play a game to pass the time."
"Naruto."
"Asami, don't you dare... don't you dare passenger seat drive on me too." Naruto deadpanned when Asami started to try and get his attention.
"But you missed the turn."
"Asami, go sit in the back... the passenger seat belongs to Kurama now." Naruto deadpanned as he sent Asami to go sit in the back with everyone else. Asami got back up and moved to sit in the back with everyone else again, and Kurama jumped from Naruto's shoulder, right onto the passenger seat and made himself comfy. Naruto circled around and made the turn that he had missed.
Asami just went back to her corner.
...
"99 bottles of beer-"
The RV stopped, and Naruto got out of his seat and walked right up to Kiriko as she started to sing. Before anyone else could join in.
*Flick*
"Ah, my nipples!" Kiriko had gotten both of her nipples flicked right through her jumpsuit. "If you don't like singing, just say so." Kiriko had a mock tear in her eye while rubbing her nipples. Naruto sighed.
"Do you want me to kiss them to make them better?" Naruto asked the woman in a deadpan tone. "Okay... now listen up. If you want to play a game or sing a song, make it something that won't distract me while we're driving... okay... okay... okay?" Naruto asked everyone.
He really needed to concentrate on driving when the roads were this difficult.
