Ram always view Subaru as an enigma , when he first woke up and grabbed her hands , finding him disgusting , a random person waking up and sprouting random stuff about being friends , a pervert who cried in Emilia's lap on the 2nd day of his work , a man who was terrible at housework and was very loud.

But…he was..kind , he was the one who figured out about the curse and saved the villagers and children by himself , taking on the lead of the pack until Roswaal came and saved him, for people he rarely knew , he threw his life for them. It was also him that allowed her and the villagers to bond , it was thanks to him that she could freely interact with the villagers and familiarize herself with the people there….if not for him , she wouldn't care , she wouldn't know how…tender interacting with the villagers could be.

When Emilia came back depress without Subaru , only saying that she let Subaru go , she let out a sigh , Emilia was someone she didn't care for much before…but due to Subaru interaction with her daily , she saw sides of her she didn't know about , how clumsy she was , how airheaded , how….naive and nice she was , without knowing about it , she grew to care about Emilia , as much as it disgust her , it was thanks to him , now he was gone , she could tell how much he meant to Emilia , perhaps he was someone who , for Emilia was her many first , the first person to care for her , the first person to be her friend , the first person to actively praise her. Ram could only furrow her brown in frustration.

When He came back with an army , telling her that the whale white was slain , she could only raise an eyebrow , this man who was abandoned by Emilia , had nothing to his name , had nothing to give , was able to gather an army who followed him willingly , she had no idea what he had done but she really couldn't believe it , she along with the villagers went to the Sanctuary first to find shelter and protection.

When Subaru came back with Emilia , she was…surprised , Emilia looked really happy , looked more confident , even more so when Emilia actively made a connection with the villagers holded up inside the church , she assumed Subaru tried to do something or told Emilia something , afterall , Subaru is the one person who from the start , always thought of Emilia first.

"It's the result of her thinking things through on her own , you shouldn't assume all of her decisions come from someone else"

Subaru softly rebuke her

She was surprised as well , even it looks like Subaru changed for the better. She didn't know what happened but she was…glad as well. After all the time spent with him , she did truly look at him like a true friend , though she would never admit it , she was glad he was back.

During the night , she heard Roswaal talk about his achievements , him creating a 3 way alliance , slaying the whale , slaying the archbishop of sloth , all these things Subaru doesn't look like he cared for . Ram was..impressed , while he did save the village on his own , she did not expect this level of achievement from him , in fact she didn't expect much from him at all.

But it was all true , she didn't know what to think of him , but what..shock her the most was his outrage , and him asking if it was ok Rem was sacrificed. Ram obviously had no idea who Rem was , she called her a stranger and….she noticed something..something she never thought to see from Subaru , the face of despair and hurt . Who this rem was…obviously meant something to him and she had no idea how someone got so close to him in the short amount of time. But it wasn't a problem , she didn't know her so she couldn't care less about this Rem.

But…When after the Sanctuary problem finished and she recovered , Subaru showed Rem to her, her heart went into shock , it was a blue-haired young girl with the same hairstyle as her….the same facial feature of hers.

But she didn't have a sister , she had always been the solo surviving oni from her clan. When she asked Subaru who was her , his eyes ... .his eyes that were always sharp , softened , full of sadness told her..this was her sister , her [name] and [memories] was eaten by gluttony. His voice, it sounded nothing like she heard from him before , he was loud , noisy and full of energy. But this voice…it was just , soft , tender , quiet , everything she didnt expect from him , he left the room , telling her to take her time.

She sat at…Rem's bed side , her sister, She could feel the oni blood running through her , she..touched Rem's face , coldness , like death , only she was breathing..she was alive

And no one remembered her except for Subaru. A chill went up her spine , was this the reason why she couldn't handle the mansion alone..? Was it because she always had Rem beside her ? did all the memories of her sister just…disappear into thin air ? nothing was left , not even her room that Subaru said was hers. She wouldn't even know she had a sister , she wouldn't even know anything was missing from her life if not for Subaru. She went out of the room to see Subaru waiting outside , leaning on the room arms crossed.

"...i know its alot to take in but if you want to know about her , i can tell u about her"

"Barusu what are yo"

"Sorry Ram it's just..can i go in ? i…i want to spend time with her"

Ram kept quiet. She studied his face , full of regret , full of sadness , and other emotions mixed in. She wanted to be snarky and call him a "pervert" but there was a time and a place for everything and seeing him in this state was something she never wanted to see.

"...Don't do anything weird to her Barusu"

Even though she didn't want to , it came out naturally, she cursed herself slightly and hope she didn't hurt him, But to her surprise , Subaru just smiled weakly

"..Thanks nee-sama , that is something you would tell me whenever i was with Rem alone"

Saying that , he went in, Ram was left baffled…though she did get a hint , Ram was protective of her sister , but she would be right ? She would be a protective and excellent sister. Yet…she still forgot Rem , her sister.

Though Subaru did say everyone forgot about her , what about him ? Why didn't he forget about her ? What was his relationship with her ? Was this regret just because he couldn't save her ? all these questions would be for a better day , where Subaru would feel better. She knew that questioning him now wouldn't be a good idea , so she went back to room to sleep and looked to the next day.

The Days pass on , and everything seem to be to normal , or at least what was considered the new normal , Garf was here thanks to Subaru , Emilia not sure what Subaru had done , was full of confidence , full of life , learning her best to become a ruler , Beatrice was now interacting with everyone after her contract with Subaru, she was helping out , she was having fun with Subaru everyday , Fredrecia and petra were doing their jobs having a massive amount of paperwork to settle with and constantly getting made fun of by everyone and Rem…her sister , was sleeping peaceful.

Ram never thought that the mansion would be this noisy…this full of life , while she did like the quiet mansion before Subaru came. She preferred this mansion. Her new life was something she did not expect to ever experience, but she liked it , bonding with everyone slowly , getting to know the villagers , her having fun everyday , full of life and not the silent stable old life she had and it was all thanks to Subaru.

She would not admit it in mouth , but…she appreciated him , she also could tell he was relying on her as well, him calling her "Nee-sama" was a way of showing it and it also was something that bugged her for various of reasons , but she knew why now , it was because he was imitating Rem's way of calling her from all the stories he told her , how he wasn't the only one to save the villagers by himself , how she helped him with the white whale. While she can see that he wasn't saying everything , she could tell Rem and Subaru probably got along well just by the sheer amount of stories he was telling. But….in a lot of these stories it seems like…Rem was attracted to Subaru, she wasn't sure if he was bluffing or exaggerating when saying all of these.

"Disgusting. Barusu making my sister look like she likes you , are you sure you aren't lusting after my sister instead ? Pervert"

"I ain't lying ! She really was like that !"

"Tsk Barusu , lusting after my sister even after chasing Emilia-sama , truly a beast"

Conversations like that continue daily , him telling stories , her insulting him and him denying it.

But she appreciated it , she was getting to know her sister again ... .even though it was from this unreliable narrative man. She also noticed that his eyes would spark whenever he was speaking about her, truly setting it in that he truly enjoyed being with Rem.

However there was something she didn't expect , after a few nights , she decided to take a small around the mansion for no particular reason , She saw Rem's room door open , maybe someone forgot to close it , so she went wanted to close it , but as soon as she got closer , she heard someone talking , the moment it got closer , the voice became cleared, it was Subaru.

She wanted to go into the room and ask why was he alone in her room so late into the night until…she heard his voice

"...I..i promise i will get you back…Rem….no matter what…please wait for me…i..i"

This….voice..this…tone..it was similar to the first time Subaru brought Ram to Rem , a voice of weakness , regret but…it sounded worst , she could hear tears choking. She took a peek inside and her eyes widened.

Inside was Subaru holding onto Rem's hand , rubbing it gently with his thumb , his face looked so…weak..so defeated , tears dripping from his ears , looking tenderly towards Rem. This….This was a moment Ram would never forget. The cheerful , boisterous , upbeat man was now looking so down , so afraid , so..down. She never wanted Subaru to look like this , or to be more precise , never wanted to see him like this. She silently walked away , deciding not to interrupt. Maybe it would only be a one time thing ? After all , he would always look happy when he talked about Rem to her.

Something probably changed within her , she started paying more attention to Subaru for various reasons, in the morning she noticed him going to the garden , cutting plants and then going to Rem's room to change the flower pot. But it was changed recently, right ? just a few days ago if she remembered correctly. Then the next day came , and he did it again , and the day after that , she realized he was doing this everyday , most likely ever since Rem was in this mansion.

She also took notice that whenever the topic of Rem came up , he did indeed sound happy but she also saw , he would have a moment of weakness , one that you cannot see unless you paid attention to Subaru when he spoke.

Noticing this , she realized Beatrice and Emilia never once asked Subaru about Rem in public. Did they realize this a long time ago ? Was this the reason whenever Subaru spoke about Rem in public , both of them would be close to him just in case anything went wrong ? a tinge of regret bore into Ram's heart , was simply asking about Rem painful for Subaru ? Were they that close to the point of remembering Rem hurt Subaru ?

The more she knew…the more she didn't know , what was the real relationship between Rem and Subaru ? close friends didn't seem like it…if anything it seems that Subaru had feelings for Rem from what she could tell…but Subaru is in love with Emilia right ? Was he really lusting after Rem as well ? She didn't know the exact details and she wanted to know, but asking Subaru felt…wrong for now , so she decided to keep the questions within her for now.

She also noticed..that Rem's room was occupied by Subaru , every night , at the same time. After the first time she noticed , she would purposefully take a walk every night , to check up on Rem and every single night without fail , he would be inside the room , most of the time , the door was closed. She put her ear on the door and heard what was spoken inside.

'H- i should put it in my dairy ,"

"-em , you know ? Emilia-tan was really doing her best with her new magic today !"

"-To was busy with work as per usual"

Everything she heard, every little stuff that happened in the day was being relayed to Rem , some were exaggerated however the intent was there. It was to make Rem feel less lonely , even though she couldn't hear , couldn't reply , couldn't wake up. It does not matter to Subaru , he just wanted to be by her side.

Ram always wanted to ask Subaru about his relationship with Rem , but it was always so difficult , and it got worse as the days went by , but there was a definite truth in how much he really loves Rem. It has been 4 months since Rem was inside the mansion and not a single day goes by without Subaru changing her flower , her water and telling her stories.

On a single day of the week , Subaru fell ill , so he couldn't work , he had a high fever and was told to rest by everyone , he begrudgingly accepted it , night came and Ram daily walked started. Even though she knew Subaru would be resting , at this point it became a habit for her , so she walked. When she got to Rem's room , she heard whimpering.

"Rem…i miss you…please...wake up….i can't be the strong Subaru without you around…."

She furrowed her eye-brown , again it was Subaru , even though he was sick he was still here ? she walked into the room , not caring if he knew but when she opened the door , she saw him asleep , presumably sleep talking and holding onto Rem's hand while Beatrice was beside holding the other hand of Subaru.

"...finally you enter Ram"

"Beatrice-sama…you knew ?"

"...it's hard to not notice if this is what you do everyday i suppose , but that isn't the point now ,in fact"

"..Beatrice-sama..what ?"

"What is he doing here , I suppose ? Well, Subaru…in extreme exhaustion woke up and came here , i don't think he knew what he was doing , i believe…with how high his fever is , his nightmare got worse than usual , i suppose he just wants comfort from someone he really wants. In fact"

Beatrice mumbled , obviously not happy with Subaru being here.

Ram raise an eye-brown

"Nightmare…? Worse than usual ?"

"Correct , Subaru always suffers from nightmares in fact , he usually calms down when i hold his hands , however it seems that combine with fever , it is something my hand cannot settle but it seems Rem hand can work for him , i suppose"

Obviously unhappy with her not being able to help Subaru , Beatrice had a frown upon her face , there was some jealousy when she looked at how Subaru was peacefully sleeping when he had Rem's hand in his.

"...but why does Barusu have nightmares so often ?"

"..i do not know, in fact , however most of his dreams…or nightmares always have specific person he always calls out in pain, i suppose"

"Rem ?"

"Correct…I suppose, it's him not saving Rem that is always haunting him , whenever he talks to me about Rem , he always has this pain. even though i told him its ok to not talk about her , he feigns strength and carries on talking to her anyway , good grief , what a troublesome contractor , in fact"

"Beatrice-sama…has Barusu talked to you and his relationship with Rem ?"

Beatrice narrowed her eyes , Ram could tell she was contemplating on answering this question , Ram knew this was a somewhat sensitive topic to ask , she wanted to ask the person in question himself…but seeing him like this..she wasn't sure she wanted to ask him , so she asked the person who probably knew the answer , Emilia was a choice but considering Subaru personality , she doubt Subaru would tell Emilia about Rem much considering how he really did not like appearing weak in front of her and always wanted to show off his "Coolness" much to Ram amusement in how much he fails at it.

Beatrice was the next best choice , she did not expect that Subaru and Beatrice would ever form a contract , but here they were , so close and always together that the old Beatrice that would flung Subaru outside or call him a lowly man seemed like a fake Beatrice now.

Silence filled the air as Beatrice was looking at Ram with narrowed eyes , Ram only returned her look with anticipation and it seems Ram won as Beatrice sighed

"Good grief , in fact. Don't tell Subaru i told you anything, i suppose"

"Please do not worry Beatrice-sama , Barusu will never find out anything from me , i will just make fun of him more without him knowing anything"

"...I rather you not disturb my contractor with what i tell you , i suppose"

"It's a joke , Beatrice-sama"

She sighed.

"..From what Subaru told me , Rem is….number 2 in his heart i suppose , she was the one to push him forward when he was at his lowest..he said that the whale , the fight with geu- , Sloth would not happen if not for Rem holding him and pushing him , in fact"

"..number 2 ? So he really is lusting after Rem ? how disgraceful"

"That's..not wrong, i suppose , but the way u phrase it is terrible , in fact"

"...Barusu..number 2 is my…sister…and did he say anything about Rem ?"

"Rem…told Subaru that she loved him , even though she knew that he loved only Emilia at that point in time when she told him I suppose. But..Subaru fell in love with her the moment she helped him get back up on his feet , good grief, i suppose"

Subaru was dense…extremely dense. Subaru was dense to other people feelings for him , Ram could see that it was very obvious that Petra was in love with Subaru , and it wasn't a crush , it was a maiden truly in love, and Subaru didnt even notice , no , if anything she feels that Subaru wouldnt get it unless it was thrown in his face like what Beatrice if he said that Rem loved him…it really did mean she confessed to him.

She sighed.

"...is it rare for Barusu to have this peaceful sleep ?"

"...the only times where he has this peaceful sleep with interruption is when he is exhausted beyond belief or i have hold his hand before he sleeps, i suppose"

Ram just looked at Subaru , who was sleeping peacefully , deciding to not interrupt anything else. She bowed to Beatrice and excused herself out.

"Ram…..sorry…Rem…sorry…Ram.."

She froze, turned around and saw him still sleeping , he was narrowed her eyes while Beatrice smiled at her bitterly

Truly a fool…a kind hearted fool

The thoughts she had , she would never voice out or tell anyone , his dream of apologizing to her because of her sister..of not saving her, even though it wasn't his fault , truly a fool.

The next day , Subaru recovered and everything went back to normal , him going to Rem's room to talk to her , Ram going on her walk at night , this was the new normality that Ram was used to.

Then one day , Subaru had to accompany Emilia on a trip as her knight , to which he happily accepted, as expected of him , following them was Otto , Garf and Beatrice , leaving just the maids in the mansion.

It felt like the old days again , where it was..silent and peaceful , Ram did enjoy it..but she soon missed the noisy group of people that were here, well it did mean she get to spend more time with Roswaal, and…Rem.

In place of Subaru , she changed the flower and water daily, and the nights where Subaru would talk to her , was soon replaced by Ram. She felt awkward at first , unlike Subaru , she had no memories of her , everything she knew about her was told by Subaru. Talking to a person who would never reply felt pointless to her at first , but she tried anyway. As she talked more..she felt more comfortable , there was this sense…of fulfillment that was slowly coming as she talked to Rem more. She could feel the link between her and Rem , her…Synesthesia.

She was getting angrier , who gave Gluttony the right to steal the bond between her and Rem ? their sisterly bond that Subaru told her that he saw frequently. At that moment, she accepted Rem as her sister and swore vengeance for Rem , who was asleep.

Days gone by and she continued the night talk in place of Subaru , who was not back yet , each time she talked to Rem , she felt more and more comfortable , she felt like she truly did love Rem , the emptiness she felt , which she didn't know she had , was filled up with feelings of love towards Rem. She knew that..before she lost her memories she truly did love Rem and most likely treated Rem as important , or even more important than Roswaal who she loved , it was a bizarre thought , but..she just knew from the bottom of her heart.

When Subaru returned , the first thing that Ram notice he did was to enter Rem's room to tell her he is back and to told her he would be back at night to talk again, While Ram wasn't happy that her time with Rem was interrupted , she knew she could enter anytime and talk to Rem and Subaru wouldn't mind , he couldn't say anything, afterall , she was Rem's sister after all right ? She was allowed to stop any person from going near her sister after all. But she was gracious , she would allow Subaru to interact with Rem , as much as she didnt want to admit it , Subaru truly cherished Rem from the bottom of his heart , the way he held her hand , the softness of his voice , the wheelchair he would brought and customized with his money , not accepting any help from others , saying "it's my job to do this for Rem" , his tendency to leave gifts in her room..even though there wasn't a point,.

And as he said , he did enter her room at night, but he didnt close the door , he talked to her telling everything that happened during his trip with the rest. Ram stood outside the room , silently watching this , well , just for today , she would leave the 2 be , but as she walked , she heard.

"Rem..i will bring you and Ram back together again , your hero promise you this , so please wait for me longer to save"

Ram turned around and look inside the room , the half-elf Knight was smiling happily , unlike the other times , he wasnt talking to her with sadness , but with pride and determination.

Something must have happened during his trip , for him to talk to her like that for the first time.

It was a look that fit Subaru more than one of sadness and Ram could only smile slightly, one that she would never show to anyone else.

Perhaps it was because she missed the daily talk Subaru would tell Rem. Perhaps she missed the noisy environment she became accustomed to . Perhaps it was the change of heart that Subaru suddenly had. Perhaps…Perhaps because she became softer to Subaru. But at that moment , she was looking at Subaru tenderly , like how a older Sister would be happy that her younger brother grow , Perhaps she truly taken a liking to being called "Nee-sama" by Subaru , even though she would refute it. Her feelings might change tomorrow or it might change again later , who knows ? But she swore on the bottom of her heart again , if she could , she would murder gluttony for the sake of her Sleeping Sister , and the Half-elf knight who cherished her beyond belief. For their sake and for hers.
