Midnight Mess

People's voices clamored loudly, making it impossible for Andrea to sleep no matter how hard she tried. It did not help that she could have sworn the loudest one was Elizabeth Bennet. Looking at the clock, she groaned...it was midnight. What on earth was going on? Getting out of bed, she put on a lavender house coat and stumbled down the stairs, thinking, 'I am too old for this. Surely there is a better time for people to come calling.' What met her eyes at the bottom shocked her.

Yes, Elizabeth was talking aloud, but only because she was attempting to quiet everyone down, including Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Reynolds. 'I really need to talk to my doctor about switching my medication,' thought Andrea. Shaking her head when Elizabeth tried yet again to get people to close their mouths, Andrea finally bellowed herself.

"That's enough! It's midnight!" Turning to Elizabeth, Andrea demanded to know what was going on. "Everyone being here cannot be my fault. I have not written anything concerning them."

"No, but someone by the name of Tauna has, and my father and sister, Mary, seem to be of the opinion that we could get answers from you," Elizabeth responded.

"What has she done now?" Andrea groaned, knowing what kind of moods her sister could get into.

"Besides threatening to put my father back into a tutu...whatever that is," Elizabeth's exasperation could easily be heard. "She has men riding around in horseless carriages near my mother's home, and they have strange lights flashing on their tops..." Mrs. Bennet's daughter glanced over at her mother, who was - yet again - needing her smelling salts. "And they are calling each other Pete and Jim."

"And some man wearing a strange uniform is hanging around our home," Mr. Darcy spoke up from where he stood in the kitchen's threshold. "The dark-headed gentleman is apparently named Mac, and he was telling the other gentleman, I believe he called him Officer Wells, to get his act together or else he would be fired."

"You think that is bad," complained Lady Catherine. "I have men hiding behind my carriages, shooting at men on horseback, and calling to each other to see if they are all right."

"What are their names?" Andrea groaned again.

"Heath and Nick."

"What about us?" Mr. Collins piped up. "We had four men banging on our door, along with a man wearing a star that said sheriff. They claimed their name was Cartwright and demanded to know if I knew the whereabouts of a man called **Don Antonio Luga. That was bad enough, but they came when we were sleeping, and their English was horrible."

"My poor housekeeper is arguing with someone named Alice, who keeps asking where Mrs. Brady is," pined Jane.

"I have heard enough," Andrea said. She turned and went to her computer to fix things, thinking Tauna had gotten a bee in her bonnet and messed around with one of her old stories, only to find a password had been placed over that section of the computer. Frustrated, she got up and walked to the bottom of the stairs. "TAUNA PETIT-STRAWN, get your hide down here...NOW!"

Tauna, who had been having a late night, appeared at the top of the stairs, wondering what was up. She had a sneaking suspicion as soon as she saw Andrea's scowling face. "Where's the emergency?"

"You have been messing with my computer files, that is what," Andrea glared. "You put the stories under lock and key, so to speak. YOU take that password off and delete that messed up story you have going on Pride and Prejudice; it is more messed up than any of mine!"

"And if I don't?"

"Then Adam 12 is fair game to me; particularly Sergeant MacDonald, Officer Malloy, and Officer Reed."

"You wouldn't dare."

"Try me." Andrea folded her arms, her glare firmly in place. Soon enough, Mr. and Mrs. Darcy - along with the others - were happily returning to their homes, and Andrea was relieved to go back to bed in peace.
