In an unassuming in an equally unassuming neighbourhood, a boy sits in front of a computer. For a while the boy have been staring at the screen, on it shows a video of an interview. To the boy, this is the umpteenth time he has watched it, but continue to watch it anyway. The reason is simply because of the moon being interviewed in the video.
The man in question, is Kayaba Akihiko.
And the boy, Kirigaya Kazuto, is interested in the man. The man who rocked the world a few years ago, the man who did the impossible. The ability to read a human soul.
It was all the news could talk about. Kazuto have watched every single video that talks about the man. Videos of studies, discussion, even interviews of the man. One particular video struck a chord in him when he first watches it. It is the one he has it pulled up on the screen right now, he hits play again.
Interview:
"It's an honour to have you here Mr. Kayaba" the interview started off.
Kayaba sat in his chair, his greying hair was slicked back and his clothes look to be well taken care off instead of the usual messiness that would not be known by the viewer unless they had watched other videos pertaining to the man. Even though he had made more effort to better present himself, his body was still jittery with nerves from talking to many people. "It's an honour to be here as well" he replied.
"Well," the interviewer said "I'm sure everybody watching can still recognise this man"
There was some chuckling in the background. Evidently, most if not all of the workers and helpers have seen the lack of care Kayaba has to his person. The interviewer, by being a bit of a showman, pointed at Kayaba with flare.
"This man here, had made an amazing advancement to the field of science. Something many scientists have said to be impossible" a pause "The ability to see souls"
The man smiled awkwardly at the theatrics, very much unused to such dramatics in his life. The interviewer kept his smile through it all "I'm sure you can tell us more about this 'soul reader'" he prompted.
Kayaba cleared his throat and seemingly along with his jitters as well, and when he spoke, the sudden conviction and confidence in his voice captured everyone's attention.
"One important thing I want to clarify. This technology I have created, it doesn't allow you to see souls. It only allows me to pick up on the presence of the soul and what is inside of it. Kind of like a language translator, this reader can recognise the language of the souls and allow me to understand them"
"Whoa…" the interviewer was amazed "It's very different from what I have imagined"
Kayaba nodded "It would be more apt to call it the soul translator"
The interview continued on after the introduction with the interviewer asking many questions and Kayaba answering as best and as clearly as he could. There were some that Kayaba felt like he had to refrain from speaking or gave a vague answer, but the interviewer didn't mind. Eventually the end of the interview is near and as they were wrapping up, Kayaba was asked what he would like to do in the future with the new technology.
The man was quiet and for some time his face was pensive, deliberating whether or not he should answer. "I have a vision, one that I hope to one day make a reality"
End of Interview
The video ends and the boy, Kazuto pulls the headphones away. He thinks about the video he has just watched, his fingers drumming absentminded on the headphones on his lap. It is such a wonder how a 11 years old kid can sit still and watch hours of a video that other kids around his age would find boring. To most that would be true, however, as long as the topic of the video has their interest, they would watch until the next day if possible.
For Kazuto, his interest is not only about the soul translator but also the man who invented it as well. The video was a few months old and he's revisiting it because, Kayaba has done it again. A breakthrough in technology, and, that same breakthrough is gifted by the man himself to him. Chosen to be the first to try out the new technology that's currently stored in a shelf in his room.
"Onii-chan! Food's ready" a voice yells. Then, knocking at his door.
Kazuto gets up from his chair and opens the door to his room, his sister, Kirgaya Suguha stands at the door. He notices that her hair is slightly wet, evidently, she has just come out of the shower. Since it's afternoon, then, she must have been doing kendo just then.
"Come onii-chan. I saw okaa-san made your favourite on the way up" she says while grabbing his hand and pulling at it.
He smiles at her "Okay, thank you Sugu"
He and Sugu go downstair and are greeted to the sight of their mother preparing lunch. Without much fanfare, both of them help their mother by setting up the table. Soon, all three of them are sitting in their chair with their food in front of them.
"Thank you for the meal!"
After a few bites, Kazuto comes across a problem. One that is mildly alarming as he stares at his food and continues to do so, never taking another bite. Even when both his mother and sister are close to finishing their food he never stops staring at his.
"What's wrong, dear" his mother asks him. She has noticed that her son stopped easting his food a while ago. It is understandable that she is a curious and a little bit worried that there may have been something wrong.
Kazuto sighs and plays with his food "I'm… not hungry"
Admittedly, he feels unfulfilled. A terrible feeling, it has been growing ever since he watched the news about Kayaba. The technological advancement, the world seemingly progressing without stop and him feeling like catching up. What makes it worse is that he lives a very unimpressive life. No one would look at a kid who's only talent is being good at games. They see people like Kayaba, the ones who are smart and contribute to society. What do they care about people like him. What would his grandfather think of him?
He stands up from the table, excusing himself to run to his room, leaving his meal unfinished.
Kirigaya Kazuto was a boy that grew up with his parents and sister. His grandfather was also present for most of his childhood life. He used to love the old man, until he showed interest in kendo. It was just a moment, when he spotted his grandfather practising it in his dojo. All it took was a mention of wanting to practise kendo that everything's changed. His grandfather was very strict in teaching him, to the old man, it was a way of life whilst to the boy not even reaching the double digits, it was a passing interest. His row with his grandfather had gotten so bad that one day, he declared his desire to stop practising it.
Kazuto sometime wonders if he should have stayed, then his selfishness wouldn't have distanced himself with the rest of his family. His sister practises kendo in his stead, and in every competition she participated, she brings fame and honour to herself and her family. The neighbourhood knows about the prodigal daughter of the Kirigaya family, no one know of the boy who hides away in his room playing games.
He wipes his eyes, too much emotion. He grabs the headgear that was a gift from Kayaba and joins in the world far from reality, to run away from a responsibility he has yet to know.
Slow update. I have exam in January
