Marigoldpaw internally mocked Tanglepaw as the gray-and-brown she-cat was trying to creep up on her, but she weaved back and forth, keeping Tanglepaw in view and confused the whole time. When she sprang, Marigoldpaw slipped under the older apprentice's outstretched paws and hit her back legs to roll her onto the ground again.

"Very good Marigoldpaw!" Flintfang, Marigoldpaw's mentor, called out to the orange she-cat apprentice as she stepped away from Tanglepaw who she had just bowled over.

The younger apprentices and their mentors were training with some of the older ones, for experience as they were told. Marigoldpaw had just bowled Tanglepaw over; she got up, spitting out pine nettles, and meowed, "How and when did you learn that?! Show me again."

"I guess you're the one that's eaten mud, Tanglepaw." Brokenpaw mockingly called out.

Murmurs of amusement arose at the young tom's mockery. "You did say that. Own up to it." Tanglepaw's mentor, Wolfstep, advised his apprentice.

Tanglepaw grumbled but relented. "It was a nice trick I'll admit, but where did you learn it."

"Yes. Where did Marigoldpaw learn such a move. I've never seen it before, was it you who invented it, Flintfang?" Nightpelt rasped, turning to the gray warrior.

Flintfang shook his head at the question. "No. This is all Marigoldpaw's doing. She came up with the move herself."

"Well it's certainly effective." Wolfstep complimented, seeming intrigued.

"It was amazing!" Brokenpaw meowed. "You'll have to teach me that one!"

Marigoldpaw licked her chest, trying to keep it flat as it began to rise in embarrassment. She didn't honestly know where most of these moves that she used had come from. It was like her body moved on it's own, adapting to the situation and carrying out the most effective maneuver to win. Well she knew that it came from her past life, but where and how exactly she learned them were still vague and distant and she couldn't recall.

"Yeah! Me too!" Deerpaw excitedly exclaimed, getting a glare from Brokenpaw.

"I'm sure Marigoldpaw will be willing to teach you all at the next training session." Flintfang calmly said, dismissing the apprentice's complaints. "I believe this is where our training session is going to conclude for the day."

Meows of protest were silenced by their mentors and they were all ushered off back to camp.

"I can't believe I lost to an apprentice that's moons younger than me!" Tanglepaw whined, taking the lead with her brother beside her.

"Not to mention she's half your size." Deerpaw snickered, yelping as his sister batted him over the ears.

Marigoldpaw rolled her eyes from where she was trailing after them from behind. Those two could be thick as thieves or as snappy as foxes towards one another. It was great that they weren't turning those types of attention towards either her or Brokenpaw anymore.

"Hey, Marigoldpaw, look! It's marigold!" Marigoldpaw stopped and turned back and tried to stifle a murmur of amusement as she saw Brokenpaw hold a yellow-bright orange flower that was bigger than his entire head clamped between his jaws. The bright pretty petals clashed with his grizzly appearance but it was endearing all the same.

Marigoldpaw turned back to come stand in front of her best friend and took a deep inhale of the strong and sweet scent that was coming from the marigold flower.

"Iz hear'd it'z good for stop infection or somethinz." Brokenpaw murmured out around the stem, appearing embarrassed for seeming to know such important information.

Marigoldpaw perked up at that information. "We should take it to Yellowfang then."

"But it's for you." Brokenpaw objected, setting the flower down for a moment to stare at the tiny apprentice.

"If it's for me then I can do what I want with it." Marigoldpaw lightly teased, bumping shoulders with the sullen dark brown tabby apprentice. "I really do like the thought, Brokenpaw. But there are better uses for it."

Brokenpaw sighed and then rolled his orange eyes as he picked the marigold flower back up. The two apprentices headed off once more to camp, but took a detour first to visit their cranky medicine cat first.

Marigoldpaw wasn't as concerned with seeing Yellowfang again now that this time they brought a useful offering to curve her temperament some. Bringing marigold to a medicine cat should be seen as a peace offering, right?

To say that Yellowfang was happy to see them would be a lie. But curiosity was gleaming in her orange eyes and she wasn't turning them away as they entered her den where she had been advising Runningpaw on memorizing herbs and their uses.

"What do you both want?" Yellowfang grumbled as she eyed the two apprentices, lingering on Brokenpaw.

"We found some marigold and brought it to you! Marigoldpaw told the flattened face medicine cat shyly, ducking her head as Yellowfang turned to scrutinize her.

"And why would you wanna do that?" Yellowfang questioned.

"Because we were being nice." Brokenpaw angrily exclaimed as he spat out the marigold flower. "Well, Marigoldpaw wanted to be nice but if you want to be ungrateful --"

"I didn't say I wasn't ungrateful," Yellowfang hastily interrupted the apprentice before he could really begin ranting. "It's just that none of you have ever done this before."

"Well maybe if you were a little nicer than we'd do it more often." Brokenpaw retorted, going silent as Marigoldpaw swatted her tail over his nose.

"We just thought you could use it to help others." Marigoldpaw told Yellowfang, simplifying their actions.

Yellowfang looked considerate before turning a sharp eye to Runningpaw who tensed under the medicine cat's intense gaze. "Runningpaw, tell me what we use marigold for, you should remember this, it's one of the first things I taught you."

"I- it's used for stopping infection and bleeding for minor wounds an- and used for inflammation of stiff joints." Runningpaw managed to rattle out, blinking rapidly as he sniffled.

Yellowfang nodded, seeming pleased. "Thank you," Yellowfang meowed, turning towards Brokenpaw and Marigoldpaw. "It's very useful to us and we'll be sure to use it."

"You better." Brokenpaw grumbled as he turned to leave. "Come on Marigoldpaw, you can teach me that fighting move from earlier."

Marigoldpaw murmured in amusement, rolling her jade green eyes as she began to follow after her best friend.

"Marigoldpaw," the flame-pelted apprentice turned at the call of her name and saw Yellowfang watching her. "You and Brokenpaw are good friends, aren't you?"

Marigoldpaw blinked and for a moment something like dread was on Yellowfang's face before it was impassive again. "We're best friends." Was Marigoldpaw's response before waving her tail in goodbye to the medicine cat.

Fun Facts

The fighting move that Marigoldpaw came up with was actually the same one Brightheart had invented. Marigoldpaw just subconsciously remembered it.

I see Marigoldpaw having a sort of Sandpaw and Dustpaw type relationship with Tangle and Deer that will somewhat change overtime.

If I remember correctly, Yellowfang did try to teach Brokenkit about herbs at some point in the books.

If someone made some fanart with Brokenpaw holding a giant marigold flower in his jaws that would be so sweet!!!

Poor Yellowfang, knowing so much but can only do so little.
