Chapter 26 – Crow vs Kiryu the Rematch
Dusk sets in. After a morning devoid of significant activity, all of the people of Crash Town come together. The dueling hour approaches.
The Ramon group rides into the scene with the wind blowing against their backs. Entering the other side are the Malcolm group, their red scarves billowing forward in the wind. The mortician arrives ready to haul off the next victim.
Ramon removes his helmet, saying, "Hey Malcolm, no thanks for the macho man you gave me yesterday. He was a goner. You better have someone better tonight."
Angered, Malcolm shouts, "Oh, you won't be saying that anymore tonight! My champion is sending your shinigami to the mountains!"
"Let's see him then. You're up, Kiryu!" Kiryu comes out, ready to duel.
"Hey champ, come on out!" Leaving the flower shop is Crow. He's brushing his hands while looking around. Some crows watch from above, squawking.
"Yo, Kiryu. Ready for this?"
"Don't be upset if you become a slave all of your life," says Kiryu, his expression dead as water.
"You were okay with killing me, so why not?" Crow grips his fists.
Ramon looks uneasy. "Do… do you know each other?"
"So what if I do? It's not like I would lose on purpose," Kiryu tells him.
They prepare to draw. The mood becomes tense. Soon, the sun touches the earth, and the duel time begins.
Crow Hogan: 4000
Kiryu Kyousuke: 4000
Both draw their pistols, turn them into duel disks, and draw five. In sync with one another.
Nodding, Kiryu says, "Fast as always, Crow."
"Only in duels," he jokes back. Malcolm looks confused. He can't tell who was first or not.
"I'll start." He draws for his turn and immediately places a facedown. "I'll set one card and summon Black-Feather Mistral the Silver Shield in defense mode!"
Crow's defender owl appears in front of him. As a set card forms behind it, the card quickly disappears. "Now, let's see you draw."
"It's my turn," Kiryu says densely before drawing. "I will discard Infernity Archer to special summon Dark Grepher."
Kiryu's monster appears on the field, a familiar warrior Crow has seen before. "I'll then activate his effect; discarding one DARK Monster to send one more DARK monster from my deck to the grave."
As Kiryu piles his graveyard, he then takes one more from his hand and plays it. "I play This Creepy Little Punk."
From the setting sun, a monster can be seen coming to the battlefield, overshadowed by the light. "This card allows me to special summon Infernity Archer."
Infernity Archer appears, the bow is drawn and ready for use. With that, he takes the other two cards in his hand and sets them, giving him a hand of zero. Free to use his effects, Kiryu declares, "Battle. Infernity Archer will attack directly now that I have no cards in hand."
The archer pulls on its string, before firing at Crow. The arrow pierces his shoulder.
Crow: 2000
"Turn over." As his turn concludes, the Ramon gang cheers.
Crow holds his arm with a scowl. 'He knew about Mistral and just went over it.' He draws his card, before looking it over. 'But, I have a plan for him too.' "I activate Simoon the Poison Wind's effect; by banishing one Black-Feather in my hand, I can place one Black Whirlwind faceup onto the field and normal summon it."
Within a gale of poisonous winds appears the purple-winged birdman Simoon.
Simoon: 1600/2000 (6)
"And, due to Black Whirlwind, I can add Kalut the Moon Shadow to my hand." Crow pulls a card and adds it to his hand. "But that's not all I'm going to do; I'll release my two monsters to summon Abrolhos the Megaquake."
The essence of both of his birds disappears to become one with a new monster, a strong Black-Feather with a double mace. Its brown wings flap as it lands with a thud.
Abrolhos: 2600/1800 (7)
He pulls another Black-Feather from his deck thanks to Black Whirlwind, revealing it as Breeze the Zephyr. "When Breeze is added to my hand, I can special summon it!"
A beautiful orange and yellow bird Black-Feather appears next to Abrolhos with her wings spread.
Breeze: 1100/300 (3)
"But wait, there's more! Trap card, open! Black Return!" As Crow's trap opens up, a blue whirlwind swirls around Archer. "When a Black-Feather is special summoned, I can return that monster you control to your hand and gain life points equal to its attack."
Infernity Archer growls as the hurricane blows it away.
Crow: 4000
"Damn it!" Ramon says when he sees that has shut off Kiryu's Handless Combo.
"Now for the rest. Abrolhos' effect; by reducing its attack power by 1000, it returns all your Magic and Trap cards to your hand!" The owl Black-Feather owls before smashing the ground, sending all of Kiryu's cards to his hand.
Seeing that, Kiryu smirks. "Not bad. But, now your monster can't defeat mine."
"You wanna bet?! Abrolhos, attack Dark Grepher!" Abrolhos flaps his wings before flying forward. He discards the card he recently added, Kalut, and watches as his monster smashes Dark Grepher to pieces. Its pieces repair and return to the card. "And any monster he destroys is returned to your hand."
Kiryu adds the card back to his hand as another card sets itself. "You're learning."
Kiryu: 2300
"Next, Breeze will attack directly!" Breeze attacks by releasing feathers in the wind.
Kiryu: 1200
The Malcolm gang cheers for their star duelist. Ramon, however, isn't impressed. "Oi, Kiryu! You better not be losing on purpose! Remember what'll happen if you do!"
Crow faces the guy's boss as he shouts, and notices him holding a device. Seeing it, the shorter duelist realizes why Kiryu is doing this. 'That explains a bit.'
"Crow, do not let that discourage you. You cannot betray the duel either." The reaper gives his stare, eyes showing a smaller bit of light better than before.
'Yeah, because you know me so well…' Crow takes one of his two cards left over and sets it. The poisonous whirlwind dissipates, causing Black Whirlwind to go to the grave and Crow's life to reduce to 3000.
"Draw!" Kiryu says, his voice having a little more warmth to it. "It won't be so easy to put me down. Dark Grepher's effect." Archer goes into the graveyard as Dark Grepher returns to the field. Kiryu then sets those two cards before revealing his last one. "Infernity Paranoia."
Dark Grepher's right-hand turns blood red before he slowly fades away. "Paranoia will release Dark Grepher and special summon an Infernity from my deck, and I choose Daemon."
In return for Grepher, he brings forth Infernity Daemon. "While he cannot activate his effect, I have other uses for him. Because I have This Creepy Little Punk to use."
His earlier reset facedown flips up, revealing itself as the magic card he used prior. "Whoa, hold up! I thought you already used that!"
"Whenever an Infernity is destroyed by battle or leaves the field because of you, I can reset this card. And, I'll bring forth the Infernity Beetle I sent off Dark Grepher's effect."
A small black beetle appears in the field, flapping its wings.
Beetle: 1200/0 (2) Tuner
"I will release Beetle to special summon two more." The bug splits into two and becomes two identical beetles.
"Two tuners?"
"I had a feeling this won't go as planned, so we're ending this now. I'll tune my level 2 Tuner Infernity Beetle with my level 4 Daemon." The first beetle turns into two different Synchro Rings, both of which pass through the demon.
As the light of Synchro washes the field, it is revealed that a new form of Infernity Daemon has descended. This purple and black demon with crimson highlights all over its body groans as it adjusts its golden wristbands. "Synchro Summon – Infernity Hell Daemon."
Hell Daemon: 2200/1600 (6)
"You have a new one?"
"Hell Daemon, attack Breeze. Hell Gravity Drive!" The demon raises its arms, causing a blazing hand of hellfire to emerge from a transmutation circle. It grapples Breeze and destroys her.
Crow: 800
"Hell Daemon delivers twice the amount of damage you receive while my hand is at zero." Kiryu points forward before pointing over at his monster. "And next, I will tune my Hell Daemon with my second beetle."
Two rings replace the bug before they pass by the demon. "The dead and the living… the moment they meet at zero, the demonic dragon will be released from the cage of eternity. Synchro Summon – come forth…" Kiryu stretches his arms out at his best monster appears from the black smoke. The hideous monster solidifies as it turns all of its many eyes on Crow. "Infernity Death Dragon."
"That thing again…" Crow says, remembering how he lost thanks to that card.
"It was nice, Crow. But this is where we part again. I'm sure you're familiar with Infernity Death Dragon's effect."
"I am. Which is why you won't be using it." Crow's trap opens up, revealing it as Black Feather Anchor. Abrolhos disappears. "Without a battle phase, you can't attack. And without a monster, you can't use that effect."
Kiryu smirks at that. "Not bad. I'll end my turn."
"Hmm…" Crow looks at his hand before he draws. And like that, all of the pieces to defeat Kiryu fall into place. "I summon the Black-Feather Tornado the Reverse Wind!"
A purple Black Feather appears on the field with a flap of the arms, wielding a sword on his side.
Tornado: 1000/1200 (4)
"Tornado allows me to special summon a Black-Feather from my graveyard. Come back, Mistrail!" His metal tuner returns to the field. "And, I special summon Blast the Black Spear!"
Blast appears to the field, a humanoid Black-Feather with a spear.
Blast: 1700/800 (4)
"A level 6 Synchro?"
Crow laughs. "Don't think I'm gonna be as predictable as you. I got something special for you! I'm tuning my level 4 Blast with my level 4 Tornado and my level 2 Tuner Mistrail"!
His monster turns into two rings before passing by the two monsters. "Darkened gales will summon the storm that tears open the eyes to heaven! - Synchro Summon!" Black gales breeze through the area as Crow's monster manifests; it's Armored Wing with some extra oomph, with a wingspread far larger than before and white-purple extending from its scalp. Its orange mask shines in the twilight while the left arm forms the cannon Crow used yesterday. Its right hand holds a large, forked sword. "Black-Feather Full Armored Wing!"
FAW: 3000/3000 (10)
"Looks like our champ has a big monster of his own!" Malcolm says with joy as Full Armored Wing appears.
"This is…" Kiryu looks at it in surprise.
"Yusei, Jack, and I are up against some dark folks," says Crow as he clenches his hands. "Synchro Killers they call 'em. So I started looking for something to fight against them. Full Armored Wing was my pick since he's still gone."
Kiryu wordlessly presses a button. "I'll activate this card; Infernity Break." Kiryu's trap opens up, and all of a sudden, Black-Feather Anchor is destroyed. "Now, how will you handle this?"
"I guess you were ready for me too. Turn end."
With his turn starting, Kiryu draws before looking at how to play this out. 'If this is an upgrade to his Armored Wing, Death Blast may not work. But, let's see how…' "I'll summon Infernity Reloader."
A monster with a demon head attached to a revolver pointed both ways appears now. It turns blue showing its defense mode.
Reloader: 900/0 (1)
Infernity Death Dragon's effect."
The dragon inhales deeply before firing a black smog upon the master wingsman. It simply slashes through the smoke. Unseen by Kiryu, something has flung through and stuck itself inside Death Dragon's chest. "Sorry, but Full Armored Wing is immune to card effects."
"I had a feeling. Reloader's effect; I will draw one card and reveal it." Kiryu draws his card as the double revolver spins its barrel. "If it's a monster, you take damage equal to its attack. Otherwise, I take 500."
"That'd be incredibly lucky if you drew a level 4."
"You'd think so," Kiryu reveals Infernity Dwarf, "but not enough."
The revolver fires two bullets, both rounds hitting Crow in the chest.
Crow: 400
"I'll end my turn with that."
Crow looks down at Kiryu's facedown. He can wait until the end of his turn, but he can't risk it. And if that Magic card returns to the field, he'll special summon Archer. Luckily, his monster has an amazing ability that has affected both of Kiryu's monsters.
He draws his card, and says, "Full Armored Wing's effect; I can steal control of any monster you have with a Wedge Counter."
"Wedge counter?" Ramon asks looking at the monsters on the field. "None of them have any wedge counters?"
"Yes, they do. Your dragon got one after it activated its effect!" Full Armored Wing points at the dragon, commanding it to its master's side. Seeing it, Ramon's group looks in fear. "And now, Death Dragon will destroy your Reloader!"
The dragon inhales before firing a smog upon the gun. As Kiryu's effect is turned on him, the fiend is destroyed and Kiryu takes the full force of his effect.
"Kiryu, after losing to you before, I held a severe grudge… no, that's wrong. I've had it out for you secretly ever since you turned on that kid. And I wanted to make you pay for that… and even now, I can't forgive you." Crow watches as a storm collects around Full Armored Wing's blade. Feathers swirl within as it does. A bit more light forms in Kiryu's eyes. "But, there are still some people who want you back alive. People here who want you alive. People you should live for! And I'm going to save you for them.
"Full Armored Wing, direct attack! Black Maelstrom!" To Ramon's fear, the feathered swordsman flies in and slashes Kiryu. The attack sends him back a bit.
Kiryu: 0000
"No! He lost!" Ramon kicks the ground in anger as Malcolm cheers.
Crow approaches Kiryu, saying, "Looks like I win."
Down on a knee, Kiryu scuffs. "I guess so. You've gotten stronger, Crow."
"Smarter too." Just as the carriage comes to take them in, the crows above cry out and flock to the area. Barbara approaches with her bouquet of white roses, but is suddenly attacked by the murderer—everyone ducks and covers, including the two kids who came to watch.
"Go! Now!" Kiryu and Crow move in and grab hold of Barbara, causing her to drop her roses. It's revealed to be hiding an electric shotgun.
"Where are they?!" Malcolm looks around, cowering in fear of the birds.
Far off in the distance, a man watches the chaos unfold. He folds his arms in anger. "Damn… looks like he pulled a fast one on us."
Elsewhere…
Far from prying eyes in the setting sun poking down at the mountains, Crow and Kiryu can be found hiding behind a building. They still hold Barbara by her arms before releasing her.
"What is this about?!" Barbara shouts, her earlier gentle persona long faded away. "What the hell is wrong with you? You save your friend and assault me now? Is that how you do things?"
Crow steps in front of her with an angry expression, completely ignoring her words. He simply asks, "How did you know about Yusei and Kiryu?"
His question takes her off guard. She can't answer properly. "I had a little chat with Kiryu before nighttime since there was nothing else to do in this damn town."
Flashback…
"Crow?! What are you doing here?" Kiryu asks in shock seeing the smallest member of Team Satisfaction.
"I know," Crow says with a scowl. "After how bad things ended for us, I wonder why I came sometimes too."
Kiryu scuffs, his attention still away into the void. "You shouldn't be here. This isn't a place you would like."
"No, it ain't," he replies, a little bit of anger in his voice. "I saw your little showdown, and I didn't like it. How can you be okay with sending people to work in mines? That's just slavery."
"It's not my fault they can't satisfy my urges."
"Satisfy your what?"
Kiryu crosses his arms. "For the longest, I've been seeking a means of death befitting me. I don't deserve to live anyway."
"What are you talking about? Didn't you use to be the most ambitious man of the three of us?"
"Oh, I remember those days… and what happened after." Kiryu's eyes lower harder as he recalls. "I was so angry at the world that I wanted it to burn, just like you said. But, when that came back at me, I was tormented and bludgeoned for the longest time. All until death caught me."
His words unease Crow. He asks, "What do you mean 'like I said?' Kiryu, what do you remember?"
He pauses. "Everything."
The man then turns to face Crow. "At first, they were dreams of me calling upon darkness. But a while ago, all of the memories came back. I was the Dark Signer that killed you and tried to kill Yusei."
Crow gasps. Not just from learning he remembers, but the fact that Kiryu looks deeply distraught about it. "I died and came back a monster, hating and betraying all of you from a simple misunderstanding."
'He remembered…' Crow then thinks back, remembering something Luca and Yusei mentioned about dealing with Demak. As well, Jack and Carly have become closer. Did that have anything to do with this?
"Dueling was everything to me. It was all I had left. And now, I hate it. Dueling doesn't satisfy me anymore, or maybe it never had…" He places a hand on his pistol. "But I couldn't throw it away. So I came here."
Kiryu takes in the wind. "If I'm going to die, I might as well go out in a duel. And what better place than a town ruled by dueling? I figure eventually I would meet a duelist who would take me out… will he be you?"
"That's wrong, Kiryu," Crow tells him. "Honestly, I wouldn't mind if you left. I still haven't forgiven you. And now that you remember, I feel so much better being honest about it. But just because I don't doesn't mean others don't too."
"You mean Yusei?"
"Well, that Barbara chick did send a letter to Yusei-"
"Barbara?"
End Flashback…
"Kiryu, you never told anyone about Yusei, right?" Crow asks the reaper, eyes not leaving Barbara for an instant.
"Why would I? If I told anyone, then he'd come rushing over here somehow." Kiryu sighs at how much of a good friend Yusei is for him to realize that so easily.
"So let's hear it; how did you know about Yusei? Why did you try to summon him here?" Barbara huffs before looking away.
Knowing she's been caught, she speaks, "Alright, fine… when Kiryu came into town, most of Malcolm's best men were sent to the mountains. We were unable to take it back, and Lotten was in the mountains training. Even if he came back, Kiryu was too strong and we couldn't risk losing Malcolm's brother. So, I came up with the idea of getting rid of Kiryu by hunting for the one person who did. I was looking around when this weirdo with a sword who heard about our plight gave us information about Yusei Fudo."
"Weirdo with a sword?" Crow does not recognize anyone with that description.
"You were planning to get rid of me and Yusei too, weren't you?" asks Kiryu with that same scowl eternally plastered on his face.
"Obviously," she replies, eyes still on Crow. "How did you know?"
"Oh, that's easy to explain." He smiles with pride. "I'm not an idiot."
"You sure about that?" Kiryu can't help but say that.
"You don't walk around with markers like these and still fall for sweet girl routines like that. I could smell your darkness the moment I met you."
She gains a little bit of a grin. "Are you sure that's what you smelled?"
"Don't distract!"
"Whatever you try, it won't work." She glances at the setting sun almost depleted. "If the rest of the plan continued, Lotten would have taken over the town by now. Let's see you get out of here now, Crow!"
The Bullet laughs. "You wanna put money on that?"
Planning to call him out on his overconfidence, she asks, "How do you plan on escaping an entire town of bounty hunters coming after you?"
"Who says I'm leaving?" Taken back, Babs wants to know what he means like that. "Kiryu, what did I always do back then?"
"Infiltration and… beaconing the rest of us…" Kiryu quickly picks up what he's after.
Crow turns to Kiryu. "What do you say, Kiryu? Want to wipe out one more map?"
Lightz: Hello folks. It's not Christmas, but I'm almost finished with the Crashtown Arc. All I ask is until either Christmas or Kwanzaa. I have been working for too long at my job; I think it's time I moved onto a writing career. Anyway, the next chapter will have Kiryu and Crow duel Lotten.
