"You ever going to tell me what your thing with Beth is?" Glenn broke the silence carrying a handful of firewood in his hands. He hadn't bothered to go inside the house when he finally rode up to the small cabin. Luke and Johnny still hadn't come to meet them, neither of us were entirely sure if they were planning on coming this way. For Johnny, it was a quicker route to his family, but I knew he was worried we would just slow him down. He knew we could keep up, but he didn't know how long it would take for us to move with an extra person, one who wasn't trained the way any of them were trained. Hell, Beth never even fired a gun before.
"There isn't a thing to talk about. She's a friend." I answered rolling my eyes. Of course, every one of them thought something was happening between the two of us. I had never been shy about bringing women back to the house. I didn't bring a woman to my house twice, most the time I didn't even bother to learn their name. Using all of them for the only thing they could offer a man like me. Sex. "Met her about five months ago, some guy slipped something in her drink. The guy I got arrested for assault on. She went to the coffee place by the mechanic shop a lot." Glenn gave a short laugh as we walked to the front door.
"I'd keep her away from Luke. Kid ain't bad, looked at his rap sheet a few weeks after he moved in. I could have got in a lot of trouble. He's had three rape charges on him, all of 'em got dropped so it could have been nothing. Looking at the file, kind of just seemed like those girls were too scared to get up and testify against him. I shook my head once rolling my eyes. Luke had infuriated me since the moment he started living with us. After Merle dipped out, we needed someone to cover his half of the rent payment, none of us could have afforded the place we were living in. Not like rent mattered anymore. We didn't even know whose cabin this was. Back in the city people were going nuts robbing each other. Killing each other right there in the streets.
"Your mom didn't want to leave." Glenn shrugged his shoulders glancing towards the dense forest.
"She wasn't there. Her drawers h cleared out. No way of telling where she went, or if she left last night or three nights ago. If she got a decent head start, she could be anywhere. She mentioned something about going to Washington. Not sure if she went that way or not. I know it's where my dad would have gone. I don't think a city will be any better, especially if they're going to start bombing them." Glenn couldn't do anything to protect his mother, she was the kind of woman that only protected herself. She'd been that way forever; it just took Glenn longer to realize that than it had for anyone else. I only shook my head opening the door seeing Beth sitting on the short loveseat couch. "Glenn can manage to start a fire, come here," I didn't mean to bark orders at her, but I felt like that's all I was doing. Anyone with eyes could tell she was scared, her big blue doe eyes-stained red from the nonstop silent crying she had been doing. She had been trying to keep the tears at bay. Something she was failing with. Beth got to her feet as I reached out grabbing her arm, gently guiding her into the bedroom. "I ain't good with the touchy feely shit, but if you need something to help you sleep, I can have Glenn give you something." Beth only shook her head wiping away at her tears as I walked over to the blue backpack, I packed for her unzipping the biggest pocket.
"No," I answered shaking my head quickly. "You don't have to sleep on the floor. I'll keep my hands to myself." I wanted to sleep on the floor. In no case was Beth old enough to be with a man like me. In no world was I even someone that was worthy of the crush I knew she had on me. I'd caught her practically undressing me with her eyes one night after a few too many vodkas cranberry drinks. I wasn't even sure she'd ever had alcohol that night from her reaction to the three drinks she managed to finish. I'd made it clear to her on more than one occasion we were only friends.
"We'll see," I answered not willing to start any kind of fight with her. Beth was someone heavily weighted for a flight risk rather than a fight risk. She didn't have a mean bone in her body. That made me more nervous than her inexperience with using a gun. What kind of person grows up on a farm and doesn't learn to hunt? "Its cold tonight depends how cold it is tonight. What are these for you told me to make sure I grabbed them." I tossed the pills I grabbed from the top of her medicine shelf. She had been very adamant about the fact that she needed those. I needed to know why.
"I'm anemic. Just means I'm low on iron. It takes me longer to warm up. If I'm too cold my lips will turn bright blue. If I get cut, I bleed way more than anyone else would." I shook my head, handing her a pair of grey sweatpants. "You think the whole world is like this now? The tv back at your place just kind of went dark." I bit down on my bottom lip at Beth's question. She was naive, that much I knew about her. Went to a catholic all girl's high school. She was shocked when she got to college. Her friends back home would have never approved of some of her new friends. Daryl being one of them. I couldn't help but worry how her family would react to a man like Daryl bringing her home. Would they at once tell him and Glenn to leave? There were questions that needed to be asked.
"I think this is the way the world is now. It ain't gonna get any better anytime soon." I answered her honestly. I never lied to Beth; I wasn't about to start now. "Hershel, is he going to kick us to the curb once we get you there?" Beth furrowed her eyebrows together as if she didn't understand the question. It was something she had never even thought of.
"If it becomes a problem, I'll put an end to it. I don't see it being a problem. I should have called Shawn before the service went out let him know what we were doing." I raised my eyebrows. She had told me she had an older sister, Maggie. "Shawn's my brother…. Twin actually. We had a falling out during my senior year of high school. Anytime I come home he makes sure he isn't around. It's just stupid shit we let get in the way." She must have read my confused expression as she clarified the name. "Otis, Patricia, Maggie, and Shawn should all be at the farm. I talked to Hershel about a month ago, he said after what was happening in Paris, he contacted all the family. Told them if they could make it here, they would have a place to hold up until it all passed." I shook my head leaning against the dresser.
"You should change, it's going to be dinner and then sleep. We'll be waking up early in the morning. We all brought our own food; we got a bit of spam if you want any of that." Beth glanced in my direction ass I spoke. She was in a state of shock, unable to convince herself any of this was real, or something other than a bad dream. I had heard her gasp in horror as we drove through the streets, the sounds of people screaming as the flesh was torn from their bones. It didn't take her long to shove her head into the crease of my neck. Her hot breath directly against my skin. That was something that had been hard to ignore. "I'll meet you in the living room. Johnny and Luke should be here sooner rather than later." I explained, giving her a single head nod before I left the small bedroom slowly shutting the door behind me.
"Think Johnny said something about setting up some rabbit traps along here. We can actually have a good breakfast before we see how far we can get during the day. Luke was still trying to talk everyone into heading to a local safe zone. Johnny couldn't give a single shit about any kind of safe zone, he just wanted to get home to his family. I would much rather be in the middle of nowhere while the entire world goes to shit. We all know some big mouth dick is going to try and take charge, and this world… something tells me it's going to become home to a kind of villain no one's ever seen before." Glenn spoke as soon as I stepped onto the small porch cigarette hanging between my mouth.
"If Luke wants to go so bad that's where he should go. I ain't making anyone follow us. I'm taking her home like I promised her I would. Home just happens to be the smartest option I can think of. Out in the middle of nowhere, they already got livestock. We can hold up there, see if this all blows over." I knew this wasn't going to blow over. This was the new reality of the world; it had already gotten too out of hand for anyone to really get in control of what was happening. The further out we would get at this point. The better.
