Noble Memories

Donna was fed up.

She was always fed up with her mum, and she supposed she always would be. Her only solace from her was the hill where her grandad star gazed. Wilfred Mott had always been so kind. Much more of a parental figure than her mother anyway. He had fought in World War 2, but never killed anyone. He would always gaze up at the stars when she was younger, talking about aliens.

Isn't that the kind of grandfather some would kill for?

But that was when she was younger. It was as if someone had flicked a switch. One day there was Wilfred, up on the hill, talking about aliens… and the next… he denied their existence. She supposed there must have been a period in between when those two things happened… but when she thought back, she saw nothing, like there had been something there but someone had removed it.

And then there was the matter of the dreams. Dreams in which she saw incredible things, species that should never exist, weird marshmallows floating into the sky, skulls in space suits terrorizing a library, octopus people on a snowy planet, a giant wasp in 1920, a weird beetle on her back, people turning to stone in Pompeii, planets in the sky, even.

But of course, Donna never remembered those dreams. Always forgot about those amazing things and that amazing man in moments before she could tell anyone.

She knew that aliens existed, no matter what Wilf said, thanks to the bloody rhinos on the TV, but she always brushed them off as just something weird to talk about and continued on with her life.

It made it all the more sad that she couldn't for the life of her remember.

As she approached the old telescope, Wilf turned around.

"Donna!"

"Hello, gramps," she replied, tired.

"Don't you talk to your mum like that," he leant closer. "She'll kill you."

She grinned, and sat in silence for a bit.

"Which star are you looking at today?"

"Ah," he laughed, in his element. "Those ones over there look like a hammer."

Donna looked up. "Yes. They do, don't they?"

She relaxed for a bit. As a thought struck her, she wheeled around to look at him.

"Each of those stars in the sky has all those planets whirling around them."

Wilf nodded, taken aback. "Well. I suppose."

"And that means that there are millions of planets out there, doesn't it?"

"Well," he replied, looking uncomfortable, "Yes. I suppose it does."

"So if there are so many planets up there, then surely there's life on them, and-"

"Oh, don't you start!" he said, looking irritated. "I saw all the attacks, but please stop bringing them up!"

"Why?" Donna asked. "Touchy subject?"

"I just don't want to think about it, okay?" he answered.

She stared into his eyes. "Will you ever tell me why?"

He shook his head.

"Donna nodded. "Right."

And she walked back down to the house, leaving Wilfred Mott to think about the Doctor
