Decades Later…

The morning began to phase out in Brisbane, Queensland as a helicopter flew towards the city while the day transitioned to the afternoon showing a bright sun and beautiful blue skies, as both humans and bipedal dogs went on with their weekly routine. For the most part it was the same as yesterday, workers of different industries and careers were leaving from their lunch breaks, teenagers and adults were leaving or going into the local stores and shopping malls, buildings were being constructed thanks to construction workers, and lastly parents were taking their kids to either school or the park to play.

But, out of all the places in Brisbane that were busy on this beautiful day, one orphanage was pretty close to being on par. "Next!" The caretaker of the orphanage yelled out to the kids as one proceeded to walk over to her. They were all waiting patiently in line for their turn, However one of the kids that was third in line standed out, looking out of place compared to the others.

He himself looked to be a human with white skin, black bald fade hairstyle, purple and black sneakers, blue jeans, a gray t-shirt with a cool looking astronaut design on it, and finally he wore a blue jacket that was unzipped showing the design on the shirt. "Next!" The caretaker yelled again, He was in line waiting for his turn, listening to some music on his wireless earbuds while playing a game on his smartphone called Street Fighter: Duel as he was in the middle of a battle being unaware of the caretaker, calling for him. "Next!!" The caretaker yelled once again. "Oh shoot" he sprung up in realization that it was his turn to go talk and so he quickly paused his game while taking off his ear buds as he stepped forward.

"I'm here, I'm here" He said to the caretaker who responded by giving him a serious look on her face. "Hopefully I'm not late or anything… I might have forgotten to pay attention to the line" He added, only to receive the same response from her, as she then looked down at the paper. "Name and last name?" The caretaker asked but the kid was distracted by playing the game on his phone only to stop when hearing her voice. "Oh! Wait I didn't catch that, what did you ask again?" The kid asked her. *Sigh* "Name? and Last name?" The caretaker asked once again.

"Oh yeah!… I'm sorry, the name's Shane… Shane McKinley" Shane told her his name as she wrote it down on the paper. "Age?" The caretaker asks. "Sixteen years old, Madame," Shane told her nicely. "Ok, your native origin?" The caretaker asked him. "Umm… it's Vancouver, British Columbia… it's up north if you're familiar with that area" Shane responded to the question as her eyes widened while writing it down in surprise. "Canada huh? a long way from home, I see. How did you end up in Australia?" The caretaker asked in wonder. "It's… complicated, in fact I assume it's probably not appropriate to talk about it in front of all of you" Shane wondered.

"I understand, how about we just forget I asked that and move forward ok?" The caretaker suggested as he gave a slight nod. "So anyways, what is your date of birth-" The caretaker asked but stopped after both She and Shane saw a female Shiba Inu walk over to them. "There you are child, I have been looking for you since I heard you have arrived" She explains looking at Shane. "Rosemary? what's going on?" The caretaker asked, raising an eyebrow. "Oh nothing… you don't need to worry about him, I'll handle it, just focus on the others alright?" She responded. "You got it, you can move on now" The caretaker told Shane. "She's right, come on now Mr. McKinley" Rosemary says while walking off giving a hand gesture to Shane, telling him to follow to which he did so leaving the receptionist with the other kids in line.

Seconds later, Shane and Rosemary were silently walking down a large hallway inside the orphanage as Shane Looked around to see on each side were multiple colored doors, all having different names that were written on a whiteboard attached to the door. "My apologies for the confusion earlier, I just now remembered you were showing up today, thankfully I was on the phone with the police station which you could say reminded me" Rosemary broke the silence as Shane turned to face her. "So was I supposed to do that or…" Shane wondered.

"Oh nah, you're only staying here until we can get a hold of your parental guardians, unfortunately they aren't exactly aware of your current situation, but hopefully they'll answer back as soon as possible" Rosemary told him. "Yeah… hopefully" Shane responded back in a low voice. "Seems like you're still shaken up by the ordeal, is everything alright?" Rosemary asked him as she stopped walking. "Not really, I just… can't get it out of my head, all it wants to do is keep reminding me like it's teasing me… even though I just want to forget… I don't understand" Shane explained before continuing to look around the hallway, However his eyes suddenly went white as the area then changed, projecting something else with his mind.

A week earlier

Shane sat in the middle of a bus, resting his head back while listening to music with one earbud on his right ear as the bus passed by different places around Brisbane up until a few seconds later it made its way into a bus stop where it proceeded to stopped and the bus driver opened the door while looking back at the passengers. "Shane McKinley?!" The bus driver called out. Shane slowly opened his eyes before taking off his earbuds to which he looked up from his seat and saw the bus driver, wondering what was going on.

"What?" Shane responds. "We're at your stop, kid. You can go now" The bus driver told him. "Oh really! Hold on" Shane said, standing up and grabbing the backpack next to him as he made his way to the front of the bus before stepping outside being greeted with the sight of a bright sun and blue skies that combined with a dash of a small breeze that felt nice to Shane compared to how the inside felt on the bus. "Ah fresh air, you love to see it" Shane comments feeling the breeze dash flow pass himself. After waiting a couple seconds the bus driver proceeded to close the doors before slowly driving off as Shane watched drive away. "Thank you!" Shane thanked while waving his hand, but it didn't last long as he then stopped and went back to look at his phone.

"Ok so where do I go now" Shane asked himself before turning on his phone and pulling up the GPS app and typing in the address to where he needed to go as an automated voice suddenly began to play. "Start heading left, ten minutes left before reaching Stafford" the automated voice announced to him. "Alright… best get a move on then" Shane said before following the directions to the assigned location.

Ten minutes passed as he continued to follow, being close to his destination; however, before he knew it, he immediately halted as his phone started buzzing. "You have reached your destination!" The GPS announced before he turned to see a white house in front of him. The house itself was all white except for the top and bottom, having a bit of green around the edges and the roof. The outside interior looked nice and delicate, consisting of stairs leading to the front door, a flower garden around the stairs on both sides, and finally a white fence which was around the outskirts of the home. Shane then noticed while looking around a mailbox next to the fence door with the name McKinley on it, making it known to him that he was at the right house.

"Yep I'm finally here… thank goodness" Shane said to himself as he opened the fence door and stepped inside heading towards the stairs and going up them being face to face with the door which he promptly knocked on. "Grandma! Grandpa! It's Shane! I finally arrived!" Shane yelled trying to get their attention but to no avail as no one seemed to respond, not even opening the door. "Huh, maybe they didn't hear me," Shane said before proceeding to knock on the door again. "Grandma?! Grandpa?! It's me, Shane McKinley, are you two there?" Shane asked only to once again receive no response from anybody, making him confused.

"That's odd, mom said they were here, but why is neither of them answering?" Shane wonders as he then grabs the door knob on the door trying to open the door only for it to be locked. "It's locked, makes sense" Shane comments. *Snap* "Oh yeah, there's a back door" Shane said after snapping his finger as he proceeded to walk down the stairs and head around the house to see the back door as he then tried to open it to receive no result, as it too was locked as well. "Of course," Shane said, not surprised. Shane then noticed to the left a window was open, however looking closer he saw it was smashed like something was thrown at it causing it to shatter which added a bit of concern to the kid's mind.

"That window… Why is it broken? This isn't right somethings wrong" He said before taking a step back, only to then hear the sound of metal causing him to look down to see what it was only to see he stepped on the mat in front of the door. He immediately lifted the mat up to find one of the emergency keys they had which made his instincts kick in as he used it on the back door and slowly stepped inside. Within the household he made his way into a small hallway moving to the left into the kitchen, there he saw the area was relatively normal with the only thing out of place was the dishes that were left unclean and unattended in the sink as water started overflowing into the floor.

Shane went over to it and shut it off before slowly making his way to the other room, there he saw he was now in the living room unlike the kitchen the area was messy, the coffee table and lamps were smashed and tipped over on the floor, both the cushions and pillows from the couch including the photos and paintings that were on the wall were also on the floor with the paintings being smashed. And finally the TV still in its original spot appeared, completely smashed as well while Shane looked in horror. "What in the world happened in here…" Shane thought but quickly snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a sound coming from upstairs. "Grandma!… Grandpa!" Shane yelled as without hesitation, he quickly ran up the stairs all while everything faded back to white.

Back to present day

"I understand what you're going through right now Shane, losing loved ones is a tough thing for a lot of people including dogs like me" Rosemary said while Shane looks through a window staring at the sky, She then proceeds to put her hand on his shoulder and get down. on his level, looking face to face with him. "But even though these times are tough, that doesn't mean you shouldn't let yourself down, what happened wasn't your fault and I promise you that we're going to get you through this and help you return home… ok?" Rosemary said in a soft voice. Shane thought for a moment about what she said only to then come to an understanding as he then nodded to her before telling her. "Ok… thank you" Shane responds back.

"Well anyways… I think we should get going, come on now… let me show you where you're staying at" Rosemary says before walking off down the hallway as Shane did the same following behind her to go check out where he'll be staying at…. For Now.
