Quinn sighed as she studied the situation carefully. Her mother looked frazzled, her grandmother was talking to Santana, which probably wasn't good. Her grandfather was attempting to look like he hadn't egged Charlie on. She turns her head to look at Rachel's parents who looked horrified, before she noticed that Santana's parents were making a beeline towards Santana. She sighed, and ran a hand through her faded red hair before forcing a smile onto her face.
She wasn't sure why she was always in charge of cleaning up Charlie's messes but it seemed that was her duty as the older twin. The first order of business was to comfort Rachel's parents and then work on soothing her mother's mood. Then dealing with Santana and her family. She shoots her grandfather a disappointed look, and watches him immediately look away. "Mr. and Dr. Berry, I know that you have no powers and you're probably worried about Rachel's safety, but Charlie and I adore Rachel. Rachel stood up to a bully on our first day, she rushed to our defense. She was the only one who did that, and despite the fact that as you can see Charlie and I can take care of ourselves. She didn't know that, and did the right thing. Plus, she gave Charlie food when she was starving, she is our friend and—we don't have that many," Quinn admitted easily.
"And you can promise us her safety?" Leroy asked.
"Daddy!" Rachel interjects. "They've been nothing but nice to me since day one, and they've protected me from getting slushied. I haven't needed to use my emergency clothes since I met them."
"There's a difference between a slushy and that," Hiram pointed out to his daughter.
"Are you asking if Rachel's safe from us?" Quinn's brow raised at the question, it was insulting. "Given our families history of producing level fives, Charlie and I have undergone testing and training since the time we could crawl. We probably have better control of our powers than anyone else at McKinley, and if Charlie had actually wanted to hurt Santana—it would have taken a concerted effort from me and my grandmother to stop her. Rachel is safe, I give you my word that if anyone threatens her we will act."
Judy finally decided to intercede, "I understand how you feel. I'm only a level one myself, I'm barely considered to be an AI, but my children have never hurt me. At least not with their powers, Quinn liked biting people when she was a toddler."
"Mom," Quinn hissed.
"I'm trying to help," Judy said, with a smile as she flicked her eyes towards Rachel who giggles at Quinn's expense. She turns back to Hiram and Leroy, "It's been difficult, since I separated from my husband. I understand that Charlie's display of power surprised you, and quite possibly scared you, I know it certainly scares me sometimes. But, she's not been herself lately. She's been moodier since my soon to be ex-husband and I announced that we were separating. We did force her to choose, and I did drag her away from the few friends she had and her various girlfriends. But she wants to be a hero, and once she starts to feel like herself I know she'll be back to normal."
"Charlie's version of normal anyway," Quinn muttered and flashed a smile when her mother shot her a glare. "Anyway, if you'll excuse us. We only came up to talk to Gramps," Quinn said, taking Rachel's hand and pulling her towards her grandfather. "Gramps!"
"Lucy!" Lawrence said with a huge smile on his face. His eyes glance down to notice that Quinn was still holding hands with Rachel and smiles at her. "Is this your girlfriend?"
"Lucy?" Rachel asks, turning to look at Quinn.
"Lucy Quinn Fabray, I've gone by middle name for as long as I can remember. He's the only one that still calls me Lucy," Quinn explains, as she lets go of Rachel's hand and focuses on the massive grin on her grandfather's face and narrows her eyes at him. "Charlie already asked Rachel out and broke up with her in the span of ten minutes. That's not why we came to talk to you. Rachel wants to go to Summit."
"That's not true, I just want to go to one of the better hero academies! It doesn't have to be at Summit. I know Summit doesn't take any one lower than a level 3. I'm currently a level 2 and Quinn has informed me that you used to teach students about their abilities, and helped them refine them. I was hoping that perhaps you could help me maybe raise my level?" Rachel asked, studying the large man who suddenly leaned forward till he was in her space. She can feel a critical eye on her, and she straightens up.
"Gramps—" Quinn says with a warning tone.
"She's tiny Lucy."
"You're freakishly tall, as is grandma." Quinn reminded him, with an exasperated roll of her eyes.
Lawrence lets out a loud boisterous laugh, which attracts the attention of his wife and the Lopez's. "How old are you Rachel?"
"Fifteen," Rachel answers and watches as he leans back.
"Well, that's good. Means you'll heal faster—"
Quinn immediately shook her head, "Gramps. She's my friend."
At this Lawrences smile faded a bit as he looked at his granddaughter. It was the first time that she had ever asked him for this type of help. "Lucy, you're asking me to help her increase her level. That's not going to be easy, it takes skill and determination. You can't make this decision for her, she has to make it for herself."
Rachel blinked when she realized that Lawrence was focusing on her, and she nods. "I'm willing to be anything to be the best that I can be."
Lawrence raised a bushy eyebrow, and leaned forward. "What are your powers? It's not like I can work miracles, sometimes people are just destined to be a low level, and there is nothing wrong with that. I couldn't help Judy raise her level. Her abilities started off rather weak."
"Thanks Dad," Judy rolled her eyes. "My sister is also a level 5, whatever my mother had skipped me and went to all my children," Judy explains to Hiram and Leroy.
Rachel hesitated for a minute, she could feel Santana glaring at her as she was helped to a chair. "I can sing," she manages to get out. "Song manipulation," she clarifies.
Lawrence blinked, "Show me."
"Right now?" Rachel asked and when Lawrence nodded she hesitates once more and looks at Santana who shoots her a dark glare, but suddenly Quinn is in her line of sight.
"It's only fair, you've seen both what Charlie and I can do," Quinn said, shooting Rachel an encouraging smile. "I want to hear you sing Songbird."
Rachel flushed a bit and looked at her fathers who gave her a thumbs up. It wasn't as if she didn't have several song's prepared.
Don't tell me not to live
Just sit and putter
Life's candy and the sun's
A ball of butter
Don't bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade
The moment that Rachel hit the first note, the air changed as everyone hyper focused on her. There was almost a hypnotic sound that drew everyone who heard it, and Lawrence immediately began to bounce, his old joints suddenly feeling younger.
Artemis July looked down at the bruises that she had received earlier from sparring with Charlie and watched as they slowly began to fade.
The song continues until there's a loud bang that startles Rachel and she looks up to see a metal tray filled with snacks smacking against the closed glass sliding door. Judy groaned and immediately marched over to the tray and grabbed it tugging on it, and pulling it back to the table. She flushes and sighs. "I'm sorry Rachel, your voice was beautiful. I haven't felt at peace in such a long time and I just—feel so much better. You have a talent Rachel."
"Still only a level 2," Santana muttered. When her parents send her a sharp look, she rolls her eyes. "I can sing too, it's not a good power. She's got no combat ability."
Rachel flushed, "My voice brings people joy—"
"Again, I can sing too. A lot of nil's can sing really well. What are you going to do when a bad guy robs a bank or something? Sing them to sleep. All they'll need to do is put some cotton in their ears, or have on some headphones Rachel. Face it your powers are—"
"At least a level 3," Lawrence interrupts tilting his head. "Sound manipulation is one of the stronger AI abilities." He looks at his wife. "They're going to claim that Charlie and Lucy are Level 6 at this rate. Maybe I should go down on Monday and see how they're conducting these tests. Every AI ability needs to be tested differently. Your song—your voice, made me feel twenty years younger. I could run a marathon now."
"Please don't dad," Judy said immediately. "You'll hurt yourself."
"Bah, keep singing and I'll feel like a young man again." Lawrence shoots a look at his wife.
"Gross," Quinn rolled her eyes.
"How the hell is she a level 3?" Santana snapped getting up.
"Mija." Miguel snapped at her.
Lawrence held up his hand, "It seems Ohio cares more about combat abilities then they do about support abilities. Your abilities seem to be able to increase the body's natural regenerative abilities. I feel younger. Years younger, I'm sure that if you tried it on someone injured you'd be able to at least help. Being a hero isn't just about stopping bad guys. In an earthquake, or a tsunami, your abilities could help save hundreds. And I don't believe that your abilities don't have any combat potential. Depending on how hard you work. I can maybe. Maybe get you up to a level four."
Quinn grinned at Rachel who looked shocked. "See. He knows his stuff, if you're a level four you can take the exam for Summit, and there's a good chance that you'll get in."
"Mr—"
"Lawrence. Call me Lawrence," Lawrence interrupts.
"Lawrence, I would be grateful if you impart your wisdom. I plan to be an excellent student, and work as hard as it takes," Rachel said immediately. She had thought that she would be forced to go to a smaller insignificant hero academy, but if she could actually attend Summit—it would be a dream come true.
"Hold on Rachel, we don't know how much this is going to cost," Leroy said immediately putting a stop to the events. He wasn't quite sure what was going on, but a man was promising to make his daughter more powerful and while the July's seemed like lovely people it seemed too good to be true.
"Daddy, he used to be a teacher at Summit," Rachel hissed at her father.
Miguel and Maribel immediately turned to look at the big man who laughed. It was clear this family was filled with power, and influence that could help their daughter achieve their dreams. A letter of recommendation from him would help Santana get into Summit.
"I'm retired, and as you can tell we have more than enough money. Artemis was a level five after all, and I taught at Summit for years. Truthfully, this would be doing me a favor. I get to mold young minds again. Charlie and Lucy learned all they could from me years ago. Well mostly, they've gone above and beyond with their abilities." Lawrence laughed. "I just need to ask permission—"
"Yes." Artemis said as she poured herself another glass of wine. "I love you. You know that, but I believe you need a hobby dear."
"Mom—" Judy groaned. "Rachel, are you certain this is what you want? I love my father, and yes at this moment he seems like he's rather easy going. But he's strict, tough and impossible to deal with half the time. He failed quite a few students back at Summit."
Rachel nodded eagerly, "I want to learn, please can I?" Rachel looked at her fathers, her eyes wide and big and immediately they averted their gaze.
"Rachel, you should ask as many questions as you can before you jump into something. It could be a very hard process from the sounds of it, and you have to think about your grades," Hiram finally managed to get out. He hated to be the bad guy in this situation.
Lawrence held up his hand, "Before I agree to anything, I need to head down and see how they are testing the students, and I'll take a look at their hero course at the school. Once I see what the situation is I'll make up my mind."
"The hero course at McKinley is only for level fours," Santana said standing up and approaching Lawrence. "If Rachel is a level 3, then what can you do for me?"
Lawrence glanced at his wife for a moment, and it was evident that they were having a silent conversation for a moment. "Nothing. If you want to get better, sparring with Lucy and Charlie will raise your abilities and your combat potential. However, I think that you should look at another profession. At the very least Santana, I wouldn't just attempt to get into Summit. You should definitely have several back up schools."
Santana's jaw dropped and she could feel her parents stiffen behind her.. "Why?"
"Pyrokinetics are incredibly common Santana, and quite frankly your abilities, while impressive, are considerably weaker than where they should be to be considered a level 4. Even if that wasn't the case, Summit has made a concerted effort to find the complete package. Heroes that can be support and have high combat abilities. Your abilities are not what they're looking for at this time. K2 might be the best choice for you." Lawrence explained easily, before turning to Rachel and her parents. "I do understand your concern, and once I have a plan in place for your daughter I will go over it with you and I'll explain the why."
Judy sighed and glanced over at the tray of cookies that was attempting to float away again and grabbed it and put it back down. "Enough talk about powers and AI's, the food is practically done and we should probably grab something before Charlie tries to get clever." Judy shuddered and looked at all the food.
