Chapter 12: P.D.A.
Summary: Olivia returns from Seattle after spending some time with her dad with Sloan, Mark's daughter, who meets Jake and Angela for the first time. Meanwhile, Addison worries about Amelia and how she's dealing with her pregnancy.
"How many cups is that this morning?" Addison asked without looking up, knowing Amelia entered her office with a cup of coffee in hand.
"Just one…," Amelia trailed off guiltily.
"Amelia…," Addison warned.
"I can't live without caffeine, okay? It's the only thing that gets me through the day. I'm not your kid that can just take a nap because she's cranky," Amelia said.
"If you're feeling that bad Ames, take some time off. I thought we agreed you'd do that, anyway," Addison offered.
"I don't have a trust fund to fall back on Addie," Amelia joked.
"Yeah, well, you have me. Don't stress yourself out about money, Amelia, I can help you if you need me to," Addison said, standing up to walk over to her.
"Addie, I can't. I can push through it. Just don't judge my caffeine intake," Amelia said.
"Well, if I can't get you to take my money, at least spend some of your time with Michelle. Before she's gone," Addison said softly.
"Or try doing half days for a while. And no surgeries," Addison suggested, wanting to help her sister.
"I don't know," Amelia said quietly while drinking her coffee. She felt horrible most days, but she pushed through it.
"Just think about it, okay?" Addison asked softly.
Amelia nodded, deep in thought. A part of her wanted to accept Addison's offer, but the other said she needed to push through to show herself and everyone else around her that she wasn't weak.
"Either that or one cup a day. For the baby," Addison added jokingly.
"I can't survive on one cup a day; I wouldn't be able to keep my eyes open if I did that," Amelia said, ignoring the fact that Addison used the word baby.
"Then take my offer," Addison said.
"Your doctor would probably recommend the same thing. In fact, as a doctor, I'm recommending you drink no more than one cup of coffee a day for the rest of this pregnancy," Addison said.
"Addie, you might be a doctor, but you're not my doctor," Amelia pointed out.
"Yes, but it's not like you have an OB right now. Plus, I'm one of the best doctors in the country offering you free medical advice, so I'd call myself lucky if I were you," Addison joked, thinking back to that time that Sheldon billed her for all those elevator meetings.
"Sure. If you say so, Addie," Amelia cracked a smile.
"You can always tell Jake all of this, and I'm sure he'd say the same thing," Addison commented.
"He'd only say that because he wants to get in your pants," Amelia joked.
"I think we're long past that stage," Addison joked right back.
"Remember to use protection!" Amelia sang out, leaving the office.
Addison shook her head before she got ready to see a patient. Amelia was definitely something.
Jake made his way into Addison's office for lunch, pausing when he saw her clearly on the phone.
"And guess what, Mommy?" Olivia asked excitedly. He could hear Olivia say on the other end of the call.
Addison looked up, smiling and waving at him while holding up a finger to indicate that she needed a minute.
"What?" Addison asked excitedly.
"Daddy's gonna take me to the aquarium to see the sea lions! We were gonna go see the butterflies, but it's cold out," Olivia explained, full of excitement.
"Wow! That sounds so cool!" Addison exclaimed, matching her daughter's excitement.
Jake took a seat, waiting patiently for the end of the phone call. It was charming to listen to them talk.
"Livvy! Daddy's going to check on a patient real quick before we go to the aquarium. Wanna come or wait here with Alex?" Derek called from the background of the call.
Jake wondered who Alex was, but he wasn't concerned. He knew Addison was on video chat since that was how Olivia preferred to communicate.
"Can Alex do my hair in a French braid?" Olivia asked back.
"Are you seriously making Karev babysit for you?" Addison asked her ex-husband, annoyed.
"I'm not making him do anything. He offered. It's either that or the nurses babysit her while I check on my patient," Derek said.
"Daycare won't take her for just an hour. You know that. They won't take her last minute, either," Derek pointed out, knowing how much she used to babysit Tuck for Dr. Bailey. Tuck was just a little younger than Olivia and they often had playdates in Seattle.
"Besides, if Amy were here, she would've been able to take my patient and I could've had the entire day to spend with Liv," Derek added. Addison rolled her eyes.
"Your sister isn't your servant, Derek. You asked for Halloween weekend. The least you could've done is clear your schedule," Addison said, exasperated.
"I did," Derek retorted.
"Things pop up. You know that. This patient is on his fourth day of post-op. If things go well, I can send him home today. I'll be in and out," Derek sighed.
"Why can't you have a resident clear the patient?" Addison asked.
"Addie, you've worked here," Derek said, exhausted by this fight.
"You know residents can't discharge patients. It's been that way for the last five years," Derek added.
"Why can't they wait until Monday when you're back at work and Liv is home?" Addison asked. She was well aware she was being irrational, but she couldn't help it. She agreed to share custody and send Olivia back and forth because she never wanted to stand in the way of Olivia having a relationship with her dad, but she also knew that Derek was a workaholic.
"Addison," Derek sighed.
"Derek," Addison retorted sarcastically.
"What's gonna happen in the future? Are you going to miss out on your other children's lives by working so much?" Addison asked.
"Lucky for you, Meredith doesn't want kids," Derek responded.
"Well, that must be fun for you," Addison muttered quietly, knowing Derek wanted to have a big family.
"Liv, say bye to your mom and go talk to Alex. I think he ordered pizza for lunch," Derek said, choosing to ignore Addison's comment as he looked down at their daughter.
She looked at Derek for a minute before running off, deciding she didn't want to hear the rest of the conversation. She didn't like it when her mommy and daddy argued about her.
"Bye Mommy!" Olivia yelled as she ran.
"Well, she's off," Derek said, picking up the iPad. Addison shook her head and chuckled.
"Remind her to call me before bedtime. And remember to bring her jacket. And maybe a snack," Addison said.
"You do remember she's my kid too, right?" Derek asked sarcastically.
"Well, even her dad could use some reminding. I'll talk to you later," Addison said.
"Bye," Derek said before hanging up.
Addison looked up from her phone at Jake sitting on her couch and walked over to sit next to him.
"Rough call?" Jake asked.
"Oh, you know. Just checking in with Liv to find out her dad's still working on his day off. Like always," Addison said, brushing it off.
"How is she doing, anyway?" Jake asked.
"Good. Her dad's taking her to the aquarium today," Addison informed him.
"She must be excited about that," Jake commented.
"Yeah. She's always loved animals. I mean, you've seen her with Milo," Addison chuckled.
"But enough about me. How are you?" Addison asked, her eyes practically twinkling as she looked into his.
"Fine; better than fine. The sun's out, morning paperwork filled, and I've got a pretty girl so, I'd say I'm doing pretty good," Jake smiled.
"Aww, I'm pretty," Addison said playfully.
"Do I get to sit with the cool kids?" Addison asked jokingly.
Jake chuckled at how cute his girlfriend was, and instead of saying something, he kissed her. It surprised Addison, but she still took it happily. Especially since they didn't get to finish their earlier makeout session. They stayed in their little bubble, kissing in Addison's office until someone knocked on the door, startling them.
"Uh…Your nine o'clock is here, Addison. And you…probably have patients, too," Dell said awkwardly before leaving again.
"Guess it's time to be grown-ups," Jake commented, standing up and offering Addison a hand to help her up.
"To be continued," Addison said, giving Jake one more quick kiss before leaving her office first.
Jake chuckled, following her out.
On Sunday evening, the couple were getting ready to head their separate ways. Addison to pick up Olivia, and Jake to head home to wait for Angela to get home. Just as they were about to walk out the door, Angela showed up. She was supposed to be at swim practice, but it got canceled at the last minute, so, instead of sending them away, Addison invited both of them to come with her. Plus, she knew Olivia would only be more excited to see Angela at the airport. And she was hopeful that Sloan wouldn't feel like an outsider with another teenager around.
"Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!" Olivia exclaimed once she spotted her mom at the airport. She started charging towards her mom about 20 feet away.
"Liv!" Sloan yelled out angrily. She knew her dad wouldn't be happy if he knew she let the little girl run off at the airport on her own.
"You're not supposed to run off, remember?" Sloan reminded her as she caught up.
"It's okay, Sloan. I've got her," Addison said, squeezing Olivia once she got to her.
"I'm sorry, Mommy," Olivia apologized. Addison nodded toward Sloan, encouraging her daughter to apologize to Sloan.
"I'm sorry, Sloan. I promise I won't do it again," Olivia said after turning around to face her.
"Good," Sloan said, smiling back now that she felt a little more relaxed.
"You brought Angie and Dr. Jake!" Olivia said, moving on from her apology and turning around to face them.
"Hey Liv!" Angela smiled as Olivia hugged her.
"Have fun in Seattle?" Jake asked, scooping Olivia up after she and Angela pulled away from their hug.
"Yeah! We went to the aquarium and everything!" Olivia exclaimed excitedly, completely comfortable in Jake's arms.
"You did? See anything cool?" Jake asked enthusiastically as they all started to walk towards the door.
Olivia nodded before telling him about every animal she could remember from her and Derek's trip to the aquarium. Meanwhile, Addison stayed back with Sloan and Angela as they all walked behind them.
"Sloan, this is Angela, Jake's daughter. Angela, this is Sloan," Addison said, introducing the girls. They both smiled back politely at each other.
"So, I'm guessing that's your boyfriend," Sloan gathered.
"Yeah. Jake," Addison replied.
"Jake. Not Dr. Jake?" Sloan joked, making Angela laugh along.
"I think Liv's the only one who calls him that," Addison laughed.
"You could probably call him that, too," Angela chimed in playfully.
"You're funny. I like you," Sloan commented. Angela blushed slightly, feeling a little like the popular girl had just told her she was cool.
"Well, I'm glad you girls get along already. Sloan's gonna be in town all week if you girls want to do something," Addison suggested.
"Yeah. We'll find something," Sloan replied.
"Hey, is Maya still living next door?" Sloan asked. She and Maya were friends, but they didn't keep in touch as often as maybe they should.
"Yeah. She'll probably be home by the time we get there," Addison said, thinking out loud. She knew Maya wouldn't be home right now because of band practice, but by the time they got there, she would be.
"Cool," Sloan commented as they all piled into the car.
"...and seals, and birds, and a sea amenome," Olivia continued as Jake buckled her into her booster seat. Everyone else chuckled to themselves over Olivia's incorrect pronunciation of sea anemone.
"So, what was your favorite animal?" Jake asked after getting into the driver's seat and buckling his seatbelt.
"Mmmm….I like the otters. And the bird! Daddy said the bird had a mullet," Olivia giggled.
"A mullet? What kind of bird is that?" Addison asked, amused.
"A puffin!" Olivia exclaimed. Everyone laughed.
"Since when does a puffin have a mullet?" Angela asked, trying to picture it in her head.
"It was a special kind," Olivia informed them. Sloan pulled out her phone, curious.
"Hmm..there it is," Sloan said after looking it up.
"A tufted puffin," Angela said.
"See! It's a mullet!" Olivia exclaimed.
"I guess that is kind of a mullet," Sloan laughed before handing the phone to Addison for a closer look. She laughed and gave the phone back to her, making a mental note to show Jake later.
When they got back to Addison's house, the kids all piled out of the car while Jake and Addison stayed back to take Sloan and Olivia's luggage in. Once Jake and Addison were in the house, they saw the girls huddling around Olivia's iPad.
"What are you guys doing?" Addison asked.
"We're looking at the animals at the aquarium. They have pictures on the website," Angela replied. Jake and Addison chuckled.
"Well, you guys have fun then," Addison said.
"You good down here for a bit? I'm gonna take Sloan and Liv's bags upstairs," Addison asked, directing her attention toward Jake.
"You're gonna unpack for Liv, aren't you?" Jake teased. Addison laughed and nodded. She liked certain things a particular way, and that included keeping Olivia's clothes neatly put away.
"You know me well," Addison smiled.
"I'm gonna start dinner," Jake said with a smile, letting Addison know he understood.
After the first month or so of dating, Jake had started leaving things at Addison's place that he'd bought at the grocery store. And every once in a while, he'd make dinner. Sometimes, Olivia would help, stirring the pot or sprinkling salt and pepper for him.
"You don't have to do that," Addison said, looking out at the girls in the living room. Usually, it was just the three or four of them. Today, they had a house full of women for him to cook for. And she knew Amelia was probably upstairs, too.
"It's not a problem," Jake smiled.
"Plus, quesadillas are actually a lot easier than they look," Jake added, whispering playfully. Addison smiled and kissed him quickly before walking away to bring Sloan and Olivia's bags upstairs.
While Jake pulled ingredients out of the fridge, he started prepping the vegetables, chopping the onions and bell peppers. Once he pulled the pan out of the cupboard, Olivia heard it hit the stove and turned around excitedly.
"Oh, I'm sorry, did you wanna help?" Jake asked playfully.
Olivia nodded back before coming to join him. By the time she got to the kitchen, Jake had already pulled her stool closer to the counter. After the first time Olivia helped him cook, he got her a stool especially made for kids so she could better reach the kitchen counter with handles for her to hold onto. Jake had already turned on the stove and heated the oil, so he let Olivia pour the chopped onions into the pan and stir it with a wooden spoon.
"Wow, she really likes your dad," Sloan said quietly to Angela as they watched from afar.
"Yeah. The feeling's mutual," Angela replied.
Meanwhile, Addison put Olivia's clothes in her drawers and went to Amelia's room to check on her. She'd already seen her car out front when they'd gotten home from the airport and figured she was just relaxing in her room. When she opened the door, she found Amelia and Michelle lying in bed, with Michelle's head on the bottom half of the bed.
"Hey, Addie," Amelia said, not even turning to see her. She knew it was her; it always was.
"How'd you know it was me?" Addison asked.
"Because it's always you," Michelle replied, looking up at Addison as her head hung off the bed.
"You know that's terrible posture for your neck, right?" Addison asked.
"Well, I'm dying, so I don't really care about my posture," Michelle quipped.
"I'm also very flexible," Michelle winked.
"There are children in the house. So, watch your language," Addison gave Michelle a small swat, moving toward Amelia.
"Oh, Liv's home? Where is the little bug? She's usually in here screeching by now," Michelle asked.
"She's downstairs with Sloan and Angela. And probably helping Jake with dinner by now," Addison said, sitting beside Amelia, who was still lying in bed.
"Oh, right…That's…McSteamy's kid, right?" Michelle asked, squinting to remember for a second.
"Yes," Addison chuckled. She still couldn't believe the nickname stuck.
Amelia craned her neck to look up at Addison, wondering what was up.
Addison put her hand on Amelia's forehead, checking for a temp, knowing she hadn't been feeling great. Amelia swatted back at her.
"I'm not a child, you know," Amelia said.
"That is very much debatable," Addison replied playfully.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm raising three kids instead of one," Addison added.
"Rude," Michelle replied, completely unserious.
Addison rolled her eyes, getting up after sensing everything was under control here.
"Jake's making dinner if you care to join," Addison said, getting up to leave.
"Anything good?" Michelle asked.
"Depends on if you like quesadillas," Addison winked before leaving the room.
Michelle sat up and looked at Amelia, who was still lying in the same spot in her bed.
"I could eat," Michelle said after a minute.
"Go ahead. You're not a prisoner," Amelia said.
"You're really gonna tell me you're not hungry?" Michelle asked. It wasn't that Amelia wasn't hungry, because she was, she just didn't want to get out of bed. And Michelle knew it.
"Oh, what's that, MJ? You're hungry, too? I know. Too bad your mommy's too lazy to get up," Michelle joked, bringing her ear to Amelia's stomach playfully.
"MJ?" Amelia asked.
"Michelle Junior. Obviously," Michelle winked. Amelia laughed.
"You do know he/she can't hear you yet, right?" Amelia joked.
"How would I know? You're the doctor," Michelle replied.
"Either way, it doesn't take a genius to know you're hungry," Michelle added.
"I'm pregnant. Of course, I'm hungry," Amelia said.
"So, let's go. I want quesadillas," Michelle said.
Amelia groaned, but Michelle offered her hands to help her up. She pulled her up and slung an arm around her shoulder as they walked downstairs.
"Oh, I didn't realize we were getting something from Chef Olivia tonight," Michelle said playfully upon seeing Olivia holding a spatula as she stood on her stool.
"Hi, Mitchie!" Olivia exclaimed excitedly.
"Hey, bug. Dr. Jake," Michelle said, greeting the two. It felt weird that someone else was calling him Dr. Jake other than Olivia, but Jake knew she was just joking.
"Dr. Jake said I could flip them," Olivia said, referring to the quesadilla in the pan.
"Wow," Amelia chuckled as they walked closer to look inside the pan. The smell was intoxicating.
"We're almost done if you guys wanna help set the table," Jake said before turning his attention back to the stove.
The women nodded and started grabbing plates, utensils, and napkins while Addison grabbed food for Milo. Amelia glanced back to see Jake helping Olivia take the quesadilla in the pan out with the spatula and adding it to the stack of already-done quesadillas.
"Alright, Liv. Let's clean you up first," Addison said, helping her down from her stool so she could go to wash her hands. She knew that all that was left to do was cut the quesadillas into slices, and Jake was cautious not to let Olivia get too close when he dealt with knives.
A few minutes later, dinner was served, and everyone sat at the table to eat. Olivia told everyone even more about the aquarium and Addison asked Sloan and Angela about how school was going. As expected, dinner was great, and Olivia was very proud of how good it tasted. Afterward, Addison helped Jake clean up as Sloan and Angela went outside to play with Olivia. While they were out there, Maya came out to join them.
As it started to get dark, Addison called Olivia in to get ready for bed. She tried to protest, but Jake offered to help with story time, so she gave in. The girls stayed outside talking, and Addison trusted that they'd be okay. Plus, Michelle and Amelia were still hanging around the living room so they could supervise if they needed to.
"Hey, it's getting late girls," Jake called outside after he and Addison returned after putting Olivia to bed. The girls nodded and started to move to come back inside.
"Your dad home?" Addison asked, directing her question to Maya.
"Uh…no. I think he has a surgery tonight," Maya replied.
"Can she stay over?" Sloan asked, a little too excitedly. She was good, Addison thought. Sloan might not know her well, but she knew Addison didn't love the idea of Maya being home alone at night. And she used that to her advantage.
"Alright. But no staying up past ten. She still has school tomorrow," Addison said. The girls cheered as they came inside while Addison texted Sam, letting him know Maya would stay with her tonight.
"What about Angela?" Maya asked. Addison and Angela turned around and looked at Jake.
"Sure. You can stay. If Addison says it's okay," Jake said.
"Have fun, girls," Addison said. The girls squealed in delight and went upstairs, making sure to keep quiet so they wouldn't wake up Olivia.
"So, does that mean you're staying, too?" Addison teased, putting her arms around Jake's neck.
"Well, I guess that's only fair for us to get a sleepover, too," Jake said playfully.
"Get a room!" Michelle joked.
"This is still my house," Addison reminded her. Michelle and Amelia laughed.
"Don't stay up too late," Addison added as she and Jake went upstairs.
Once they had the girls settled, the pair headed to bed. Jake usually kept a spare pair of pajamas around at this point, since he was always sleeping over. He took the opportunity to take a shower and convinced Addison to join him. Afterward, Addison dried off and got dressed before getting into bed. When Jake came out of the bathroom, he saw Addison sitting up in bed, texting someone.
"Who are you texting?" Jake asked, sliding into bed with her.
"Mark," Addison said simply as she continued texting.
"You're texting another man while you're in bed with me?" Jake asked, pretending to be insulted. Addison laughed.
"You have another lover I should know about?" Jake teased as he wrapped an arm around her waist. Addison giggled when she looked up to see him smiling back at her.
"No. You're all I need," Addison said before leaning in for a sweet kiss.
"Are you sure?" Jake asked teasingly.
"Yes," Addison laughed, putting her phone on charge.
"I was just letting him know that Sloan is safe and having a sleepover. But now that's over with…," Addison said, leaning in to capture his lips with hers.
He chuckled, pulling her closer to him so they could continue their makeout session.
