A wild quest
Autumn. A season of change and no one is having more changes than Kara Luthor. That's right, Kara is officially a Luthor and the beautiful bracelet she has on her wrist is the constant reminder of the permanent bond she made with Lena. A few weeks ago, they got married. Lena was sure they would remain Danvers, but Kara wanted to become a Luthor so she can show to the world that Luthor name can also mean kindness. The blonde is determined to make Lena feel proud of her last name even if that might take them some time.
Anyway, there are no reasons to worry about that now as beautiful memories of their intimate ceremony, blessed by Rao and their families, come back to life when Kara stares at the piece of jewelry she doesn't remove, not even when she takes a shower. A replay of that special day was in motion in her mind, when she's kicked out of memoryland by the strong kicking of her unborn babies.
"Leeenaaa!"
The girl of steel, bending in pain, calling for help, is another big change in Kara's day-to-day life. The blonde is not used to feeling discomfort. Unmatched in strength, it's rare for her to feel pain at all. And yet, the constant movement of the triplets gets the best of her. Making her feel each day less Super and invincible.
Small but perfectly formed. In a few weeks, the three little ones will be ready to arrive. At 8 pounds each, heavier than any human fetus, these little pups are constantly kicking, showing already their excitement to know the outside world. Their eyes won't open till after birth, but that doesn't mean they're totally clueless as they immediately react to the sweet voice of their dear mother, Lena, who's talking to Kara's belly, in order to calm them down.
"You, three, need to calm down. Mommy needs a break, okay?"
The kicking stops immediately. Both women smile.
"It works like magic, every time, Lee. How do you do it?"
Lena chuckles, she has no idea how she's able to tame them with nothing more than her voice but she's happy to appease Kara's discomfort. God knows she needs that and more. These past months have been hard for the dear blonde, lots of stomach acidity since the triplets started to develop a fabulous full coat of hair in their heads. Unlike Lyra, who has golden curls, these three cubs will be born with subtle black hair, just like Lena.
And, talking about Lyra, where is she? Well, just like the leaves change their color, our little baby girl is also facing some big changes. For starters, she's now more than capable of sleeping a complete night. A very nice news for her tired moms. A complete night of deep sleep ends as soon as the sun shows up. Lyra's an early bird and just like Lena, she's not up to lazing around in bed.
She's far too young and yet, her legs are ready to stand on their own, she can feel it and she feels confident enough to try it. She's getting bolder each day. And, like every day, Lyra gets ready to uncover new discoveries. Today seems to be all about discovering a way to stand up and walk.
She uses the rails of her crib as support to get up. A smile of victory has Lyra in her face when she sees herself standing. Now, she just needs to let go of the rails and walk. Easier said than done. Especially when the ground below her is smooth and puffy. Maybe her mattress is not the best place to start walking, she will soon find it out.
One foot after the other, little Lyra tries to mimic her mommies, especially Lena, who has a stylish walk. Yes, Lyra wants to follow Lena's footsteps, even if she hasn't found the balance to stay up without support. As soon as she releases her tiny hands from the rails, she falls. Face down, butt up. She's not hurt, the smooth mattress was a big help on that but, that doesn't mean she will not try it again. How does Lena make it look so easy? Lyra wonders, and she might have called her with her mind because soon Lena is there, getting into the room and looking amused at the position she finds her.
"Are you okay, sweetie?"
She's alright. This new position is more comfortable than what it looks like. But, it seems that she had enough practice for today, Lyra hums happily when Lena picks her up from the crib. Staying in her mother's arms is always cozy and comfortable. She could stay like this forever, but when Lena makes the mention of food, Lyra's priorities change immediately.
The mention of food brings a big smile to the little girl and Lena chuckles as she sees her little girl, eager to eat, she's definitely Kara's kid. Always up to eat and now, for the first time, she's going to taste something else than her formula. Lyra is finally starting on solid food. That's right, Lyra is settled in her baby chair and for the first time, she's gonna try something else than milk.
Lena makes the last preparations for this 1st meal, and Kara takes advantage of it to talk to their little calf alone. Just like Kara saw in many NatGeo documentaries, it's at this young age that they must show Lyra the basics to survive. And, Kara will make sure to pass down a very important knowledge.
"Lyra, you must pay attention to this. It's very important. This knowledge I'm handing on to you, it's a valuable lesson"
The baby girl looks at her, with big eyes, very curious to see what will be the lesson of today. Lena stops whatever she's doing in the kitchen and pays attention to them, she's curious to see what Kara will confide in. Could it be a Kryptonian knowledge that has been passed down through generations? Well, not exactly…
"Lyra. You're gonna start to eat solids and it's a tricky thing to know what you will like to eat and what you will not. But, here is my advice. Anything that's green, don't eat it!"
"KARA! Do not fill her head with nonsese!"
Lyra chuckles, it's always funny to watch mommy Lena scolding her jeju Kara. She's still giggling when Lena finally approaches with her meal. Lyra is always excited for the new till Lena settles in front of her, a little bowl with something green in it. The texture and the color don't look appealing at all, and the disgusting faces that Kara makes when she looks at the smashed mix don't help to sell it better. Lyra puffs her cheeks, looking unhappy with this 1st meal.
"It's broccoli and chicken, darlings, don't make those faces, it tastes good, I promise"
Lena rolls her eyes when Kara keeps making disgusting faces, and while she cannot change Kara's aberration towards green veggies, she's determined to make sure their kids don't follow the same silly behavior. Her genes must shine through in moments like this, and thankfully, she's able to persuade Lyra to at least taste it.
One spoon of Lena's homemade mash and little Lyra seems very interested to keep tasting this green food; soon, she's even trying to get some of it with her little hands. Half of the bowl is all over the table and her hands, maybe not the best table manners yet but, Lena doesn't mind, Lyra is eating something green and that's more of what she could hope for.
"Is it really that good?"
The blonde pregnant woman wonders as she sees her little one digging into the bowl with her bare hands. So much enthusiasm, it gives Kara the munchies but, she should be careful, she's getting into a dangerous territory here because just like her, Lyra doesn't share food and the dear hero will find it out in a bad way.
"Auch! Lyra! That hurt!"
Kara exclaims as she looks at her bitten finger. She might not have big fangs but her little jaw is strong enough to leave a mark. Little Lyra holds her ground and looks more upset than Kara. Lena chuckles, amused by the scene.
"Lena, it's not funny, she bit me!"
"She doesn't like to share her food, darling, she's just like you"
"I don't mind sharing it with you"
"That's right, I'm the exception, I wonder if…"
Lena looks at the upset baby who's in a defensive mode, ready to attack to bite again if she must. Puffed cheeks, frown eyebrows, ready to scare anyone, far away from her bowl of food, Lyra is far from wanting to share food till her dear mother Lena catches her attention and gives her the sweetest smile as she says…
"Lyra, ahhh…"
Lena opens her mouth, she wants to be fed by Lyra and the baby girl smiles big with such a proposition. With a lot of effort, Lyra is able to fill the spoon with her meal and gets ready to get it into Lena's mouth. Kara looks shocked by the change of heart of the little one.
"It seems I'm also her exception, darling…"
Lena smirks and Kara pouts, upset with the revelation. The reaction gets a big laugh from the raven-haired woman who gets no other choice than to prepare a bowl just for Kara.
Soon, each blonde gets her own bowl full of Lena's green mash and the reason to be upset is forgotten. Lena smiles, watching them eat something green with so much delight, but she makes a mental note that sharing food might become a challenge for days to come, especially once the triplets arrive.
The arrival of the triplets is imminent. Lena soon must face bigger challenges than food sharing. For starters, they need to look for a new and bigger home. Her penthouse looks too little for a pack of four kids. So, the first priority is to secure a new residence for them, and that's why, just after first light, the next day, this Super-Luthor family gets ready to visit what could probably be their new home: the Luthor mansion.
Lena doesn't have good memories in the Luthor's manor house, she feels hesitant to bring her happy family there to live, but she promised Lillian to at least see with her own eyes the place now that the renovation works are almost finished. Lena didn't ask for it, and yet, Lillian went all the way to do something on her behalf without discussing it with her. Anyway, they must get on the road soon or they will be late. If there's something Lillian doesn't like, it's to wait, so...
"C'mon, sweetie, let's get you changed"
Like every time, Lyra is happily engrossed to go out and experience a new quest. She giggles the entire time, even Kara looks excited and, the happy faces of her dear blondes, make Lena even more anxious. She doesn't know what to expect, and it doesn't help Lena's nerves that the ride takes a little longer than estimated, they make several stops each time they pass beside a donut store. Lena never thought there were so many donut stores in the city and more than that, in each one of them, they recognize Kara as their 2nd most loyal customer. The 1st one is of course Supergirl. Just if they knew…
In any case, Lena makes no remark, she doesn't mind spoiling Kara with food, after all, she's carrying a precious cargo. A trio to be more precise. And, at this stage of the pregnancy, every day, Kara's load gets bigger and with it, Lena's stress gets bigger too. Like any lioness, ensuring the survival and safety of their little ones is Lena's top priority and finding the perfect home for them is the key.
Lena is not afraid of moving out of her penthouse, but she's not convinced that the place where she grew up is the best option for them right now. Anyway, they are already here and she promised her mother to check out the place before making a final decision.
Lillian was already waiting for them, at the entrance of the mansion. They made her wait and normally the old Luthor would make a comment about it, punctuality is important. She's ready to remind Lena that till she sees the little girl who's excited to see her.
"Sorry, mother, we're late, we…"
"You're here, it's the only that matters"
Lena is surprised by the lack of remarks, but she's even more surprised to see how charmed her mother is with her child. Watching an endearing Lillian is still a shocking view. But, Lena cannot blame her. One look towards the little baby and anyone could get under her spell too. A hiding superpower? It doesn't matter, this baby has them all wrapped around her finger and no one complains.
The old Luthor was planning to greet the family with nothing more than a head nod, the Luthor's equivalent of a hug, but she must understand she's now part of an affectionate clan. The Super are truly big huggers and Kara & Lyra will continue to remind her that the Luthor's way is now a full display of affection.
"C'mon, Lillian! We're family! Give me a hug!"
Kara says with a happy smile when she gets a quick snuggle from the stiff old Luthor. Lillian doesn't know how to react but, of course, when it's Lyra time to open her little arms, Lillian's soft side comes naturally and hugs the little baby with a tenderness never seen before. This fearsome old woman couldn't be more gentle. A unique closeness starts to build a bond to last a lifetime and it means the world to Lena, especially now that Kara is pregnant with triplets.
With triplets, many risks can rise all along the journey of birth, but between all the possible risks, Lillian will not be one of them. On the contrary, one of the reasons why she's pushing Lena to move into the mansion, it's to make sure the little cubs stay safe & sound.
Protected by the most advanced security system in the world and who knows how many kilometers of empty hectares surrounding the property, the mansion is as safe as it can be, out of reach for many troublemakers. Not even the most crazy paparazzi will dare to risk his life for an exclusive picture. No one who values his own life would dare to put a foot in the property without invitation. Luthor's name is feared the most, and their terrible reputation is for once, used for Lena's benefit.
There's no such thing as a zone with zero risk. Lena knows very well there will always be evils trying to reach them but, it's nice to see how Lillian, from all the people in the world, is more than ready to hunt them down and make sure Lena's family is as safe as possible. Lena's babies are now the center of Lillian's world, and you can see it, in every detail done on the renovation of the mansion, the old Luthor will do everything in her power to keep them safe, something Lena & Kara really appreciate.
"Wow, this place is huge!"
Kara looks amazed by the big space, it's in moments like this when she gets conscious of how wealthy Lena and her family are. She feels a little insecure of what she can bring to the table till she sees how happy Lillian and Lena are with little Lyra in their arms. She brings them joy, so much joy. Just like the one that spreads over Kara's chest when she recognizes Krypton's interior design in some parts of the mansion.
"It's like my home, how…?"
"Well, for once, Lex's knowledge was used for good. I might have also had the help of Superman to get some data confirmed but, I hope I didn't overdo it?"
"No, it's perfect, it's… thank you!"
Lillian gets another hug from Kara, and Lena feels tears in her eyes, touched by how far her mother went to make this a home for them, for Kara. The mansion doesn't feel like an old, cold place anymore. There's a new cozy feeling around that Lena cannot put into words as they make a tour around the place and looking at the pregnant woman, Lena knows Kara is already picturing them living here. Especially when Lillian points out that…
"Like you can see, you've enough rooms for as many kids as you want"
Lena blushes a lot with the comment. They haven't actually planned a precise number of kids but, Kara has made it clear that she wants more, a lot more. Lena is not against it and looking at all the space they might have, the idea of dozens of babies seems more than possible in this big home. Gosh! She will have a big family! Lena blushes with the idea of filling this mansion with kids. But, can she keep so many kids safe? Well…
"I doubt any low key villain will dare to trespass and even if they dare to do it, they will be neutralized even before they can blink an eye"
Lillian says, very proud of the security protocol put in place. It's good, Lena admits it, but she can make it even better. She even starts to say out loud the changes she would like to make on it.
"Does that mean you'll move in?"
Lena doesn't know how to reply to that question. Sure, the place is huge and seems safe but, is it somewhere where her family can live happily? Well, one gaze towards the two Kryptonians who are outside is more than enough to vanish any doubt.
Kara and Lyra are contemplating the big, beautiful yard. Lyra has never seen so much green before and she loves it, it reminds her of Lena's eyes. They take their time to bathe under the powerful sunlight ray that covers the land and when it's time, little Lyra is put down, on the ground so she can enjoy the grassland first hand. The little blonde squeals in delight, looking at this large swath of open yard. She crawls her way around Kara, and she loves the feeling of grass under her tiny hands and tiny legs. Such a wonderful feeling that the little toddler wastes no time to roll over the grass. The happy giggling coming from her, it's more than enough to settle Lena's mind on moving in.
Just like that, Lyra's new habitat is settled and the baby girl takes in the sight and sounds of their future home. A new place can seem dangerous and scary but not for little Lyra. There's an air of expectation in her eyes when the exploration starts. Far from the luxurious penthouse, this scrubby terrain is all now for Lyra, the right place to fulfill her curiosity about the world.
"Darling, do not let her crawl out of our sight…"
"Lena, relax, I've this under control"
That's something yet to prove; the baby girl might be small but at this young age, she's already a formidable force of nature, just like her mothers. Lyra is already hardwired to test out her super skills. The palms of her hands are her super sensors. Through touch and vibration, Lyra can effectively scan her surroundings. She feels a strange vibration coming from the ground, not far from where she stands, she has to know what it is, right? She gets ready to investigate. Her first quest in this new habitat.
She could get in big trouble and big danger, but that doesn't stop her. She crawls her way out mommies' radar, towards the source of the vibrations. The little girl believes she's on her own, she ignores completely that her mother, Kara, is monitoring every crawl from above. Another advantage of living in this isolated place, it's that Kara will not need to hide her super skills. No paparazzi nor intruders at the near distance, the blonde Kryptonian can float around, freely, without risks.
"Would you slow down?
Kara mumbles, now finally standing beside the baby girl who has crawled all her way towards a fountain. It seems that Lyra was feeling the vibration of the water. The child smiles, looking happy with the discovery. A few months old and growing up fast, Lyra has no time to slow down. Kara might look worried about the big distance cover but, that is more of an encouragement for the little calf to keep going. She feels confident to do anything and that's why now, she's trying to climb the edge of the fountain but it's too risky and her jeju decides otherwise. She's not pleased when Kara grabs her and stops her from doing it.
"No climbing… not yet"
Lyra pouts , but her unpleasantness goes away when Kara sits her on her lap and shows her what is inside this big pool of water. Both on the edge of the fountain, Lyra giggles when Kara guides her tiny hands to touch the jets of water.
"You like that, huh?"
Lyra nods and they keep playing around till the blonde mother forces her to stay quiet and listen…
ribbit, ribbit…
What is that sound? Lyra wonders when her ears pick up this strange sound never heard before. Kara smiles, finding cute how her little cub tries to figure it all by herself. It reminds her of Lena when she's working in her lab. She might have Kara's physical features but, she's a mini Lena at 100%. Kara just knows it. And, just like Lena, Lyra lights up when she makes a discovery. Something green and tiny jumps in front of them and just like that Lyra finds the source of this croak.
"It's a frog"
Kara happily gives her all the information she has on frogs. The blonde proves once again how useful it was to watch NatGeo documentaries and with that in mind, she's settled to make Lena acknowledge it, one day. Anyway, for now, it's just her & her calf, bonding as they get ready for a day full of adventures.
"She's becoming a great explorer"
It's what Kara mentions when she joins Lena and Lillian again. Lena smiles looking at the sleeping baby Kara is holding in her arms. It's nap time. A gentle stroke, a caress over her little cheek from Lena, makes Lyra smile under her sleep. She doesn't need to open her eyes to know it's Lena now, who's holding her in her arms.
Unlike us, sight is the last sense this baby relies on. To her, it's all about taste, touch and smell. She has more smell receptor genes than any human. And right now, she's drawn to one particular scent: the smell of Lena. It's only when another smell gets stronger when Lyra feels forced to open her eyes once again.
At first sight, she notices they're back to the penthouse, but the smell is not because of the change of scenario, it comes from something else. Lyra sniffs the air and then, her eyes finally land at the source of the smell that woke her up, Kara, eating what might appear to be an XL portion of BBQ ribs. The blonde mother is happily humming as she devours the exquisite meat in front of her. Bite after bite, it makes Lyra lick her lips as her elephant appetite wakes up. She's lured to get a bite, but Lena has other plans for her, a well-balanced diet.
Lyra puffs her cheeks when she gets another green mash. She looks at her Jeju and points out the delicious meal she wants to try. Lena sighs, making her eat green all the time might become more difficult than what she thought.
As the day dims, Lena and Kara start to talk about the moving arrangements. For Lena, it's out of the question to let Kara fly their things to the mansion. Kara's metabolism is going through big changes now that she's pregnant and the need to rest and not overdo gets imminent. That's why the DEO and the rest of the super friends have been taking care of Supergirl's duties over the last couple of months. Lena appreciates the gesture, it puts her mind at ease, knowing that Kara doesn't have to act as Supergirl while they're expecting.
"We should call Alex, she could help with the heavy lifting, then…"
Kara and her family live by the absolute rule, all for one and one for all. El Mayah, like the blonde says. A big change in Lena's way of living. But she's part of this pack now and being a Super-Luthor means being together, a new concept the dear Luthor has to get used to. Especially when it's about getting help.
Head of a large empire, used to facing ALL by herself, an alpha female like Lena feels out of balance when she needs to rely on someone. But, despite how awkward it might feel, she calls her sister in law and to her surprise, the rest was easier than expected.
Thanks to their family and friends, they move in a blink of an eye and to celebrate it, they make their 1st barbecue in their new home.
"Kara, stop drooling on the steaks! Go away!"
Lena chuckles when Alex pushes her very pregnant sister far from the barbecue grill. Alex was in charge of grilling. Not just because she knows the perfect timing to flip the meat but because she's the only one capable of keeping Kara away from all the meat so everyone can get more than a bite.
This is actually one of the most important lessons of all. How to handle a hungry Kryptonian. Lena takes notes as soon she will have to deal with not two but five hungry Kryptonians. The dear CEO gets nervous thinking about it. Lena doesn't just have to be good. She's got to get everything right every single day. Her family depends on it. But putting such pressure on her shoulders is actually not good for her family. And, she figures that out when her cubs finally arrive.
The birth of the triplets is far from being perfect as Lena wanted it. They didn't have the time to get ready for it as Kara's water broke two weeks before the D-day. Lena panicked the second it happened. Alex wasn't picking up, she was on a DEO's mission where the signal was poor. Lena wasn't ready to deal with all of this now, they weren't ready and Kara saying she wasn't going to make it to the hospital made it all even worse. A birth at home was never foreseen and Lena wasn't sure what to do next. Thankfully, the first person she called next, had the head clear enough to manage it all.
"Lena, get me washcloths and water, now!"
Lillian arrived in record time and started to give orders and make the proper preparations. Lena didn't know what else to do than follow whatever her mother said. It's remarkable how Lillian was able to handle it all together before John arrived with Alex and Eliza.
"I didn't call you…"
"Your mother did"
Lena smiles when she realizes that calling Lillian was, after all, the best course of actions she could make. From that point, everything was like a blur. And, the only thing Lena remembers very well, was when she heard the first cries of her babies.
"You can come in, now, Lena"
Eliza says with a warm smile and the raven-haired woman puts her little Lyra in John's arms just to catch a glimpse of what is waiting for her. Her quest for perfection ends the moment she sees the final result of this chaotic day.
"Congrats, you've three very healthy boys"
Alex says and Lena smiles looking at the 3 little boys with dark hair that are crying as they are not used to being outside their mother's belly. It's only when they hear Lena's voice that they stop crying and open their eyes to see for the first time, their dear mother.
"Hi…"
Lena says hi and the three boys smile at her. And with that bright smile, the real wild and beautiful adventure begins.
NOTE: Merry Xmas and wishing you wonderful & happy celebrations!
