The smell of gunpowder and burning bodies poisoned the air around me, it was over the damn war was over.
It had taken everything that we had to force the ninjas onto the negotiating table and more than once we thought that the outcome would have been obvious.
It was only Earth's technological advantage that helped us put up a fight, hell it had been Earth's experience with war that allowed us to push the enemy back despite their superpowers.
One would think that having mangas full of information about the world would have given us the advantage, but there is a complete difference between knowing how to do something and doing it.
Earth had used everything to force the enemy back and to do that we had to ignore the rules of war, so we unleashed everything from chemical weapons, nuclear bombs, and even nanobots that targeted specific gene patterns.
All of that and we barely managed to win.
Even after we managed to capture one of those giant monsters, whose screams of pain and hate echo through the laboratory where the scientists are dissecting it to learn what makes it tick.
In the future people might say that we are cheating by taking spells and fighting styles from all of the fictional universes that were made over the years.
Unfortunately for those naive fools, the only reason that they will even be able to say that is because they will never be on the receiving end of one of the ninja's attacks.
We lost too much in this war.
"It's finally over." I say to myself before I turn and look at the blond kid with spiky hair who looks away when our eyes meet.
Everything about this world is wrong, normally child soldiers are kids that don't have any other choice, but the kids in this world are more than happy to throw their lives away.
Not only that but normal people aren't born here, it doesn't matter if the people running around are trained soldiers or not, everything here has superpowers, the difference between them is that there are those who know how to use their powers and those who don't.
If there was a feeling that anyone could describe how the following year felt to all of us, it would be a clouded numbness.
Sure our bodies were there, we all held onto our guns as tightly as we could while the borders were being put into place. We listened as the politicians yelled at one another and nearly started another war.
We listened to the fireworks that were shot into the sky and as the people cheered because the war was over.
Sure the videos of those days showed that we were there, but the truth was we weren't because our minds and souls were still fighting the war, so we didn't know that it was over.
And by the time we realized it was over, everyone else had moved on with their lives.
Our reward was a piece of land, a bunch of money, and a pat on the back, with a piece of paper that said that no averment in, emperor or company could take it for us.
Sure we told the governments and companies that we wanted all of those things if they wanted us to fight, but they weren't worth what we lost during the war.
...Change...
The world had changed not because there had been another war but because of how the war had been fought, it had taken all of the Hidden Villages to force the people of Earth to their knees.
Yet despite their joined strength the people of Earth had managed to fight them to a standstill, their people were weak, as even the weakest amongst genin could break them beneath their feet.
The war should have ended quickly, but the combination of advanced technology along with the different spells that those people brought to the battlefield made whatever advantage the hidden villages had become meaningless.
Now whatever plans anyone had for the future were gone as the maps of the world needed to be changed, so that everyone knew who ruled those parts of the world.
The elders could be heard through the mansion as they yelled at one another, one of the things that the earth had demanded was reparations or the attack that had started the war and everything else that was destroyed.
Hinata held onto Hanabi, she was doing everything that she could to hold her tears back, but the truth was that both of them had been promised to one of the soldiers who had fought and survived fighting several of her clan's ninjas.
Her father and grandfather argued that they should just give that man a pair of girls from lower families, while others said that they could just give the man a pair of orphans and get it over with.
How would he know the difference?
This conversation was happening in all of the noble houses as one of the insults that the rulers of the Earth had done to them, was forcing the hidden villages to give up their sons and daughters to their soldiers that came from the lower classes.
Everything fell silent and Hinata listened to the footsteps coming closer, she tightened her arms around her sister and looked into her father's eyes when he opened the door.
"Hinata," her father says to her with a voice that she has never heard from him before.
'I tried to stop them from ending you away, but even with my position couldn't because they could use it to start another war." he says as he walks closer to her and hugs her and Hanabi.
"You'll have to be strong from now on, your sister will join you when she is older, so you won't be alone for long." he says to her before the maids begin to enter the room and pull Hanabi away.
