Minutes to Heaven
Prologue
After a few moments of silence, punctured by her rattling breaths, Mirai helped her up. She wobbled a little and he steadied her, practically holding her up as he led her to the sink. She washed up lethargically and he looked away to give her a sense of privacy. When she finished, he just said to hell with it and scooped her up into his arms, after seeing her heavily leaning against the sink.
He carried her back to his office, grabbing his jacket on the way, and then laid her onto his couch. He draped his jacket over her.
"I'll be back," he told her quietly, when her hand shot out of his jacket to grab his hand.
"Don't go," she croaked out, eyes wide.
He knelt down and squeezed her hand. "No one will find you here. I promise."
She hesitated but ended up nodding, letting go of him. He adjusted his jacket on her one last time and then he left.
Mirai couldn't for the life of him know how to test for pregnancy in the medical ward. The best that he could do right now is to grab a few "at-home" tests from the store. Luckily, there was a store around the corner from his Agency and he walked over in good time. He went straight to the Health aisle, but seeing so many selections, he frowned to himself. He hailed over a worker, who came over curiously.
"Which of these are the most reliable?"
He couldn't trust the most popular or well-known brands on just name itself —that wouldn't mean any of their products were as good as they were 'said' to be.
"Um…pretty sure these two," she said as she pointed them out. "I hear they're sworn by as pretty accurate."
Mirai nodded and grabbed a few of both. Then he pressed on. "What else must I get for a pregnant woman just finding out she's pregnant…might be pregnant?"
Suddenly, the worker was smiling and beaming. "Oh! Get her some flowers and chocolates! And a stuffed animal!"
She led him around the store as he chose each item carefully. After she rung him up, she smiled again and told him, "Congratulations!"
He nodded to her after a pause. He wasn't the father after all. This wasn't a happy occasion either, nor had the infant been a result of a mutual joining. It had been rape. The reminder of that had him stop in the middle of the sidewalk and take a deep breath. Then he steeled himself and walked a little faster to his Agency.
Back inside his building, Mirai carefully set aside the balloons (shades of green, like her hair) and chocolate. He took the stuffed bear and stared in consternation at it, though it was the cutest one he'd found.
Dressed up as All Might of course, the heart it held read 'Congrats & I Love U!' He was just her mentor, one she had a strained, complicated relationship with. This also wasn't a situation to be congratulated on.
Taking scissors, he carefully snipped the connecting threads. He opened a cabinet and tossed it inside, before fixing up the teddy bears' paws and then grabbing all his purchases and headed to his office. Izuku was still on his couch, but she was sitting up and awake.
"Midoriya-kun, here. It may be premature, but have these," he said awkwardly, handing her the chocolates and balloons.
She took them in surprise. "…Thank you," she told him softly.
Mirai's grip on the plastic bag tightened, but…"Here," he handed it over reluctantly.
She put down the chocolates on the table and set the balloons aside before looking into the bag.
A quiet "Oh" escaped her and Mirai inwardly flinched. "Should I —should I do all of them at once?" she asked in a hush.
Mirai faltered. "I'm —I'm not sure. Maybe one at a time, so we won't mess up the results?"
We? Why did he say 'we'?
"Then…then I'll go do it now, I guess," she muttered, cheeks coloring in embarrassment.
"Let me grab you a cup of water first, if it'll help," he said, leaving to the break room to do just that. His hands oddly shook as he collected a cup and filled it with water, but as he headed back to her, he made sure that he looked calm even if he didn't feel calm.
Entering his office, he saw her where he'd left her and he walked over to her with his hand holding out the cup. She accepted it solemnly and stared into it blankly, before she started taking large gulps of it. After she set it down, her hands clenched in her lap before she finally stood up from the couch. She quietly shed his jacket and put it carefully on the couch, before taking the bag and clutching it to her.
"I have a private bathroom that you can use," he said then and went first, showing the way to it. She followed him without a word, disappearing into the bathroom as soon as they reached it.
He didn't know if he should stay there, waiting uselessly at the door. Should he stay for support or leave to give her privacy? He didn't know, especially given that the two of them weren't close by any means. To be honest, it should be Toshinori who should be there right now. He would comfort Midoriya better than Mirai could.
"Do you want me to stay?" he called out through the door. "Or should I leave?"
"Please stay," she replied quietly, even though he was able to hear her at least. "Don't…don't leave me."
He shifted on his feet at her request, but he didn't move from his spot. A few minutes later, she opened the door just a bit and peeked through it. She stared at him before her trembling hand reached through the opening and held out the pregnant test stick. He took it and read the result.
Positive.
He inhaled deeply before he mentally collected himself. "Have you had your period?" he asked her, making her cheeks color.
Midoriya shook her head, hiding her head behind the door as her hair fell forward to hide her face.
"Is it too early for it to come or did you end up missing it? If it's too early, then perhaps the test is a false positive —" even though it's more likely to be a false negative, if she took the test too early, "and we should wait until after you're sure you've missed it —"
"I missed it," she whispered, still hiding her face.
He stopped talking, staring at her. Then he ran a hand down his face and took a deep breath.
"We still have five more tests to run through to make sure," he murmured.
But a part of him already knew the truth. He thought she probably did too.
