Courier Six had seen and fought pretty much everything the post-apocalypse had to throw at her. From giant mutants that can rip a person in half with a single strike, to seeing a bloody alien spaceship flying across the sky although the Courier liked to omit the fact she may or may not have been under the influence of alcohol at the time). Despite all the horrors she'd faced until now, despite being shot twice in the head and surviving, nothing could've prepared her on how to deal with a hyperactive kid that literally fell from the sky. And boy, is she a handful.
Six frowned at the child that stood before her that had (somehow) randomly sneaked up on her. Roughly five feet tall, black (or is it red?) hair with a peculiar hairstyle, but an even more extraordinarily stupid looking outfit. A single piece dress above knee level black dress with finishings in red, thin dark leggings and tall boots that looked more uncomfortable than useful. Yet, the most unnerving thing to Six was the fact this kid just wouldn't stop smiling ear to ear at Six. Of course Six didn't let her emotions be shown, the old riot helmet she wore prevented things such as her own emotions from being known to others.
A minute of pure silence went by as Six and this mystery girl stared at each other, the former sitting by a on a boulder just above a makeshift camp, with Maria aiming at the latter who was standing at about five feet from her. "Sooooooo…Who the hell are you?" Six asked, her voice being slightly more robotic sounding due to the helmet's voice filter.
"OH, HI! I'm Ruby and you look just sooooo coooool! YoumustbeareallystrongHuntressifyou-'' This…Ruby began to rant, much to the dismay of Six.
"Calm yer horses kid." Six spoke with a sigh, raising her free palm to get the kid to shut up and holstering her pistol, Maria, with the other.
"Sorry! Sorry! I just really like Huntsmen so seeing once up close is just so…AWESOME!" Six could see the kid's urge to jump at her which made her slightly uneasy.
The Courier cocked her head. "The fuck is a Huntsmen? Don't you mean hunter?"
Ruby's look of excitement was quickly replaced by one of pure confusion. "Uh no? Like Huntsmen?" She put more emphasis on the word this time. "As in the people that hunt and defeat the Grimm?" Six just stared at her. "...Those big black scary monsters that attack Humanity?"
Six stared at the kid for a solid couple of seconds before speaking once more. "Kid…Are you on drugs? Did someone make a type of psychomentats I'm not aware of?"
"What?! No! Wha-Why would you even ask that?! I'm thirteen! Why would I do drugs?!" To Six, Ruby seemed genuinely taken aback by the question.
Six shrugged before staring off to the endless wasteland. "I mean it's not that uncommon. One of the many tragedies of the Wasteland."
"The what?" Now it was Ruby's turn to ask seemingly dumb questions. To which the Courier responded with a flabbergasted look, even though Ruby couldn't see it.
"The Wasteland?" Ruby gave the woman a confused look "As in the giant stretch of death, sand and empty ruins you see before you?" Ruby tilted her head "The byproduct of the Great War that destroyed Earth? Ring any bells?"
Ruby's eyes went wide upon hearing those words, a sudden realization dawning on her. N-No, t-that can't be right. That's sci-fi movie stuff right? "H-Hum weird question" She let out a chuckle, trying to play off her state of near-panic, which Six caught on to. "What's the name of this planet?"
Courier six eyed the young teenager, the red lenses from her old customized riot gear helmet piercing her weird silver eyes. It was such a dumb question to ask, yet Six could see it was a genuine question. "Earth."
Ruby felt her legs lose strength as the world around her seemed to slow down. No. Nononono this couldn't be happening. She couldn't be in another world! That's sci-fi and fantasy stuff more movies! Ruby's head felt as she noticed she was plummeting to the ground. But she wasn't worried about hitting the hard rocky floor. Only a single question repeated endlessly over and over in her mind. "What the hell happened?"
THUD
Ruby knew she was one of the best fighters in Signal, even despite her age she could beat a lot of the older students in school orchestrated duels. Of course, she couldn't beat Yang, but her sister was among the top of Signal, so it only made sense she couldn't beat her half-sister. If Ruby was on the top twenty, Yang would be on the top ten or so.
Of course, none of this would've been possible without help of her Uncle Qrow whom she idolizes as one of the coolest Huntsman there was. So, to no one's surprise, when Ruby wanted to get stronger she would, most of the time, resort to asking Qrow for help.
Qrow suggested that Ruby would have hands-on experience when it came to being a Huntress. So he offered to go with her and venture out to the forest to hunt some Grimm, which would be a thing they'd do every other week. Some would call Qrow irresponsible, but he knew better than to just leave Ruby alone, hence why he always took her to sites with minimal weak Grimm activity and kept an ever watchful eye over her. However, Ruby is…Ruby, and someone can only keep a bird caged for so long.
So that brings us to this morning, where Ruby quietly woke up before everyone and ventured alone into the forest for her training session. Should she have left a note? Well..maybe. But according to herself "Dad would flip if he found out I went alone this time." Besides, this would be a quick thing! Just a couple hours of killing Grimm before coming back!
Two hours passed and Ruby had yet to find a single Grimm. How come she hadn't found anything yet?! "For a 'forest teeming with Grimm' this seemed like a very empty place." The teen groaned and marched on. Another hour went by and her frustration and doubt we're starting to seep in. Thoughts like 'Where were all the Grimm?!' and 'Maybe I shouldn't have come alone' filled her mind. "I should've waited for Uncle Qrow…"
Ruby's frustration finally reached its limit when she took Crescent Rose from her back, the weapon transforming into its scythe form before she turns and strikes at a nearby tall tree, cleanly bisecting the trunk with a single strike and making the tree fall with a loud thud. Ruby groaned and sheathed Crescent Rose before she turned on her heel and made to leave.
A loud howl from deep in the woods would stop Ruby in her tracks. A smirk rose on her lips as she could recognize the howls of Beowolves anywhere and sure enough, three of the Grimm appeared from the depths of the woods. She once again drew Crescent Rose and steeled herself, she might get that training after all.
The beowolves ran towards her with one lunging at the young student from Signal, she sidestepped the Grimm and with a swift upward movement she slashed the Grimm's head off. One down, three to go. Another one brought his claw down on Ruby with the other ready to bite her head off from the opposing side. Not having time to dodge it by normal means, Ruby used her semblance "Petal Burst" and all but flew away from the beasts, getting a good distance between the two.
With the distance she had mounted between herself and the Grimm, she stabbed Crescent Rose's blade on the ground and made use of its sniper configuration, pressing its trigger and firing upon the Grimm. The beasts didn't falter as they rushed the teen, not caring about the stream of bullet fire being unleashed on them. Ruby steeled herself and took a deep breath before squeezing the trigger one more time, the bullet found its mark right between one of the beowolves eyes, killing it instantly. Two down, one to go.
As the last beowulf got within melee range, it swung down his claws on Ruby, but she quickly put Crescent Rose's blade between herself and the Grimm, and successfully parrying its attack. Ruby slashed with her scythe at the Grimm but it ducked under it and used the opening to strike Ruby. However it's attack would prove to not hit, as Ruby pressed the trigger on Crescent Rose and the scythe shot back up, hitting the beowulf's jaw with its blunt end. Ruby would not allow it to recompose itself and it was high time to end the fight anyway, and with a final swing of her scythe, she embedded the blade on the Grimm's back, finally killing it.
Ruby took a few deep breaths and wiped the sweat off her forehead. "That took more energy than I expected. But hell yeah was that cool!" Her victory was cut short as more howls could be heard in the distance and more Grimm appeared on the treeline.
"Okaaaay. Should probably go home." Ruby nervously laughed as the still growing amount of Grimm were definitely way too many for her to handle. She sheathed Crescent Rose, turned around and began running away as fast as she could. She could use her semblance, but it was draining to do so and Ruby reckoned she only had about two or three uses of it for short distances and one for a longer distance of travel.
Ruby ran as fast as she could as the small horde of Grimm remained hot on her pursuit. She was confident she could ditch them…probably. The number of trees started to diminish with each second Ruby kept running, her mind filling up with hope as that could only mean she was close to a settlement!
"Wait, wasn't I near the coast?"
Ruby suddenly came to a halt, sliding a bit on the dirt due to the cheer speed she had accumulated, as to not fall off a cliff she had reached and to her spiky death below.
Ruby frowned. "Crap…that's…not good." The ever louder footsteps and howls of the encroaching horde of Grimm quickly called her back to reality as she took position at the edge of the cliff with Crescent Rose in hand and finger on the trigger. "Okay Ruby you got this. Just like Uncle Crow said. Keep calm and don't panic." She took a deep breath and steadied her aim. As soon as Grimm started appearing in the treeline, shots rang out from Crescent Rose's barrel.
Ruby's aim was…decent. Some shots hit while others didn't. Still, those that did hit proved to be fatal for the Grimm, with Ruby being able to defeat about five beowolves before the horde got to her. Despite the odds being very much against her, Ruby was not deterred. Switching to her weapon's scythe mode, Ruby lunged at the incoming Grimm, decapitating a beowulf and shooting another in the stomach, though this did not kill the latter.
This went on for a full minute of dodging, deflecting and attacking. For a Huntress in training, Ruby held on for much longer than anyone could anticipate. Yet, for every blow she struck, she'd leave openings which were exploited by the Grimm. She could feel her aura running on its reserves. Brothers she was tired. So tired. But she had to power through this, she had to get back home. To dad, to Yang, to Uncle Qrow. She had to-
Ruby felt a surge of pain coming from her side. She had been too busy parrying the attack of an ursa to see a boarbatusk ram her side and sent her flying,...over the edge of the cliff.
The world seemed to slow down to Ruby as she descended to the spiky rocky coastal floor. She closed her eyes, thoughts of her dad, Yang and Qrow filled her mind. She was going to die. All because she just couldn't wait for someone to go with her.
Well ain't that a kick in the head?
Ruby jolted awake, her breaths still ragged and heavy as blurry vision started to regain focus. From what she could tell she was in the same place and it was night. She turned her head up to look at the starry night sky, she was mesmerized by the thousands of stars and constellations unknown to her. But, what made her truly wide-eyed, was the fact the moon here was intact, not shattered like the one in Remnant. She felt a warm sensation on her side and the crackling of flames. Tending to the fire of the campsite was that mysterious (not a) huntress. The woman turned her head to Ruby, her helmet's red glowing lenses sent shivers down Ruby's spine.
"You're finally awake." She spoke in a neutral tone. "You were a bit beat up but nothing major. Just disinfected your wounds and bandaged the worst ones." She turned back to the fire and fed it another handful of sticks.
"T-Thank you." Ruby stammered "I uh-" A hungry loud growl from her stomach interrupted her speech, making her blush out of embarrassment.
"Hungry?" The woman asked, receiving a timid nod from the girl. "Well, you're in luck. There were some geckos around." The woman retrieved a stick with a piece of grilled meat and handed it to Ruby who slowly took it and stared at it. "Don't worry, it's not poisoned." The woman reassured her.
"N-Nono I-" Ruby quickly shook her head "It's just-...You said it was gecko? Like…the tiny little lizards?"
The woman stared at her for what it felt like hours to Ruby, the expressionless helmet only adding to her uneasiness. "You're not from around here are you?" Ruby nodded. "Yeah I figured as much. Ruby right?"
"Y-Yeah. R-Ruby Rose." She felt herself shrink and become a miniscule ant compared to the mysterious and imposing woman she was sitting next to.
"Well Ruby, I've had a really shitty week. Meaning, I'm not in the mood for bullshit. So, I want you to tell me who you are, where you come from and what you are doing here." The woman's tone was not an angry one, but also far from friendly. A cold neutrality that could end up swinging either side depending on Ruby's answers.
"I-I…Well, you know my name, Ruby Rose. I'm from Patch, an island off the coast of Vale, and I study at Signal Academy…I don't know what I'm doing here because frankly, I don't know how I got here." She chuckled nervously.
The woman was once again quiet, probably processing the information Ruby had just disclosed. "Why did you ask for the planet's name?"
"I…You're not gonna believe me." She looked down at the piece of gecko meat she had yet to eat.
The woman chuckled. "Believe me kid, at this point I'll believe anything is possible."
"O-Okay…I asked because…my planet's name is Remnant…" She closed her eyes and braced for the worst. After all, telling a person you're an alien has to sound deranged.
The woman stared at her for a good minute. "Huh. Well Christ on a stick! That's...new. I" The woman seemed to be contemplating this reveal. "You certainly are not from here…But a different planet? But then again you didn't know what the Wasteland is. Or what a gecko is for that manner. But a different planet?"
"I-I know it's hard to believe. I can hardly believe it myself that I'm somewhere else but…That's the truth."
"Do you have uh…Like a spaceship orrrrr?"
"Nono I just-...I remember being thrown off a cliff and then I was here…That makes it sound less believable doesn't it?" Ruby cringed at that thought
"Well yeah. But you seem genuine about it. So I guess I'll have to take it." She shrugged. "For now at least."
"What do you mean 'for now'?" Ruby scooted away from the woman.
"Kid, you just told me you're a person from another world that got magically transported here. We're in a land of liars, murders and rapists. Ya can't believe everything you're told. So yes, I'm holding back my trust on this. You should eat by the way. You looked starved and exhausted." The woman let out a tired sigh and muttered something under her breath Ruby couldn't quite catch.
Ruby in turn stared at the piece of gecko meat one more and hesitantly took a small bite. "Tastes…normal enough". She thought to herself, but she didn't really care for the flavor as she was indeed starving.
Ruby ate in silence, devouring every spec of meat on that stick. The two remained in silence for a couple minutes, with the crackling of flames and the wind being the only sources of noise. Ruby glanced at her every now and then but would quickly go back to staring at the desert.
"What?" The woman asked.
"S-Sorry?"
"You obviously want to ask something so just ask."
Ruby stayed silent for a couple seconds. "Are you a robot?"
The woman turned her head to Ruby so fast she'd thought the woman would have snapped it. "What?"
"S-Sorry it's just you haven't removed your helmet a-a-and your armor's basically covering your entire body a-a-a-and-" She continued rambling trying to explain her thoughts but the woman shushed her up.
Another minute of awkward silence went by before the woman sighed once again. "Ah fuck it." Her hands reached to her helmet. It made a quiet sound and unlocked something before the woman actually removed it. Under the frightening helmet was the face of a scarred woman, probably in her early to mid forties by Ruby's estimate. She had messy neck-long straight(ish) dark orange (or was it a very light brown? Ruby couldn't tell) hair, with a bang slightly bigger on her right side. Though her two more eye drawing features were her golden colored eyes and…two large bullet wound scars. One on the top left of her forehead and the other just under her right eye. Ruby widened her eyes once she noticed them.
"There. Happy?" Ruby nodded her head slowly. "You can call me Courier 6 by the way. Or Courier. Or Six if you're feeling friendly." Ruby tried holding a snicker but failed. "What?"
"It's just. Six is not a name. It's a number." Ruby recomposed herself.
"Well it's my name. Good 'ol Courier 6." Six sighed, once again drawing her gaze to the crackling fire. "Any other questions?"
"...why do you have those scars on your face?" Deep down Ruby already knew the answer but she still felt compelled to ask.
"I got shot in the head." Six answered nonchalantly, leaving Ruby speechless and staring at her. "At least I got the bastard that did it." A smirk grew on her lips. "I got him good." Ruby could only imagine what that meant but she decided to not think about it.
"Right, my turn to ask questions again." Six turned to Ruby with a curious look. "What's that?" She pointed at Crescent Rose, which was displayed on the ground next to Ruby. "You had that on your back. I saw it had a trigger so I assumed it was a gun of some sorts. But I've never seen a model like that before."
"That's because I made it." Answered proudly. Six only raised an eyebrow. "I had help from my uncle of course but in the end, I was the one who made Crescent Rose. That's my weapon's name by the way."
"Huh. Interesting. What caliber does it fire?"
"Oh it fires 50cal." Ruby beamed. Someone was finally interested in her weapon!
Six gawked at her. "You're telling me, that that fragile looking thing, fires 50cal?" Six looked genuinely surprised.
"Yes! It was hard to make and I had to redo the barrel a bunch of times but at the end I made it work." Ruby beamed with pride. She always liked when people were taken aback by Crescent Rose.
"I see…" Six grew quiet again.
Ruby was growing to hate these silent moments. In the past hour or so, she'd been the most she'd been all month! "Sooooo what about your weapons? You have some pretty cool looking guns. What're their names? What do they fire?" Ruby was all fired up for this. She loved talking about guns so this was a topic she could keep up for a while.
Six sighed and proceeded to show Ruby her rather extensive arsenal. From a 9mm pistol called "Maria", to a big sniper rifle Six called an anti-material rifle, to a myriad different kinds of grenades and a small selection of knives. All of which enthralled Ruby (minus the knives) for being so different from the guns back in Remnant (that she knew of).
"Alright I think that's enough Ruby." Six said putting away the last of the grenades, which made Ruby visibly sad. "Get some sleep. We're waking up early tomorrow."
"We?" Ruby tilted her head. "You're letting me come with you?" She had to hide the enthusiasm behind her eyes.
"Until we reach Vegas. My conscience doesn't exactly let me leave a kid all alone in the desert. But once we reach Vegas I'm handing you over to the Followers. They should know what to do with you."
"The Followers? Who are they? They sound creepy, like a cult." Ruby was slightly distressed Six would just hand her away especially to a group of people with such a creepy name.
"Nono, nothing like that." Six shook her head. "The Followers of the Apocalypse-...Okay maybe the name doesn't exactly do them justice, but they are good people. They are basically doctors that travel the wastes and offer their help to those who need it."
"Oh…" Ruby was confused. Why would a group of nice people choose such a creepy name? One more thing to not think about she supposed.
"Okay now seriously, go to sleep." Six didn't raise her voice but it left no room for argument.
"How? There's no bed or sleeping bag?" How was she supposed to sleep? Six certainly wasn't…she wasn't suggesting that right?
"Listen princess, out here you're not going to have those luxuries. So just find a comfortable position on the floor and sleep." Six was a bit harsher with her words, even if she didn't raise her voice. Ruby in turn, felt herself feel small again, but did as told. "I'll keep watch for the night."
Ruby spent a good five minutes finding the most comfortable position she could find and took off her cloak to serve as a pillow. Her mind recapped the events that had transpired that day. She was really in another world. A world that appeared much more dangerous than Remnant if Six was telling her the truth. "Goodnight Six."
Six hummed in response.
Slowly but surely, Ruby felt her exhaustion once again catch up to her and soon enough she had drifted asleep.

WELCOME BICTHES AND BROS AND NON-BINARY HOES! Jeez, I haven't written in a while. AND BEFORE YOU SAY IT, I know I haven't finished any of my other fics…And I don't really plan on it. But this one I promise I'll finish. AT LEAST Volume 1. I'm taking a gamble and joining the RWBY fandom even though many people told me to not do so. But idrc. If people start being assholes then I'll deal with it :D
I'm gonna let you know, I'm still in the process of watching all of RWBY, so I don't know all the lore yet. So if I make any mistakes please do correct me IN A CONSTRUCTIVE WAY. Dw about New Vegas though I know Fallout's lore (I'm totally not obsessed with the franchise)
Schedule wise, I'll try to post a chapter once a week. But with Uni and shit it might be longer intervals. If that's the case I'll try to make chapters longer.
Anyhow, I hope you've liked this first chapter and see y'all (hopefully) next week.
