Me and Jacques entered the city after a two-hour walk, my curiosity growing even further. Supposedly this is the city of Mauville in the Hoenn region, and it's half water and half land. Pierre told me that this is historically due to a battle between the legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre.
This was really one of the first times I'd been outside, even excluding my trip to New York. I didn't have time to fully enjoy the sky and the nature surrounding me due to the recent chaotic events.
The town we entered was bustling with life, multiple people walking throughout the asphalt roads and conversing with one another in fluent Japanese. Luckily, I understand the language, which is my native tongue, making communication very easy.
"I think I can walk the rest of the way, thank you, Jacques. I hopped off his shoulder.
"Are you sure? I don't think you have any money, and your ankle looks terrible."
"I'll find a way, the hospital seems to be just a few steps away, so I can walk there." I said, Jacques sighed and gave a forced nod, a small smile plastered upon his face.
"I have a feeling we'll meet again, Kiyotaka. I plan to battle you one of these days when you get a Pokémon." Jacques waved me goodbye. I limped my way over to the hospital with nothing on-hand, hoping they would take humans as patients.
I entered through the automatic doors, a sudden gust of wind blew my brown curtains back, cooling my heated forehead.
"Thanks again, Nurse Joy! Let's go, Quintley." A beautiful, enthusiastic, white-haired girl around my age walked past me with a blue frog hopping behind her. She gave me a quick smile and left.
"Nurse Joy?" I raised my tone, startling the pink-haired nurse who was focused on the white monitor.
"Oh hello! Come on in." Nurse Joy signaled me over, her enthusiastic tone matching the tone of the girl before.
"What seems to be the problem? I don't see a pokeball with y- Oh my goodness!" Nurse Joy rushed over to me, looking at my extremely swollen ankle.
"What happened?" She examined my ankle as I rolled up my gown, her touch around my ankle sending shocks of pain up my leg.
"I tripped." Nurse Joy looked up at me and examined me thoroughly. Her kind nature immediately directed her attention to my wound rather than my appearance. The entire gown was soaked in honey and mud.
"That doesn't seem to be the case, let me show you around." She ushered me down a hallway, leading me into a sterile white room, where I felt somewhat at home.
"Sit." She motioned over to a white counter, taking my shoe off as I sat down as she had instructed. "It seems this isn't a broken ankle." 'Huh?'
"What do you mean?" I'm almost 100% sure I heard a snap, and my bone felt like it was separated.
"It's a beedrill sting, the larger ones can dislocate ankles if positioned right. I'll fix you up..?"
"Ayanokouji Kiyotaka."
"I'll make sure to heal it, Mr. Ayanokouji. You look a little young; are your parents with you?" Nurse Joy asked with a look of concern.
"I am an orphan, Ms. Joy." She looked a little down-ridden as I said that, and she continued her work without asking any other questions.
Multiple unknown medicines were taken, injecting a syringe with an mysterious liquid inside it into my bloodstream, making me a little uncomfortable.
"You seem to be a bit confused. Aren't you a curious one?" She smiled a bit, wrapping my ankle with a bandage. The pain subsided almost immediately.
I nodded, unsure of what she was trying to prove.
"Alright, you're all better now. You should be able to go in an hour." I raised my eyebrow; an hour? Usually a wound like this would take a couple of months to fully heal.
"Are you unfamiliar with this medicine? It's a herbal medicine grown in the grasslands of Littleroot town. It's a liquid form of it and is an efficient medication for humans." Said nurse Joy
Ah, it seems this world has more healing capabilities than my previous world. I want to learn more about the medications. I have a plan.
"Do you have any where to go, Ayanokouji?" The nurse suddenly remembered my orphan status, seeming a bit concerned about my independence.
"No, ma'am. I'm currently homeless." I said.
"Hmm, I could use an extra hand at the hospital.." She murmured to herself.
"How about learning about medicine under me? You can sleep here and assist me with my work, and you'll get a minimum wage. Sounds good?" I nodded. This was a perfect opportunity to set myself up in the city.
It's been 2 months since I've worked for Nurse Joy. I've researched every single type of Pokémon, their weaknesses, strengths, types, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I am the most knowledgeable person in the world, but I'm close.
Nurse Joy has been providing me with books, which have allowed me to further expand my knowledge of this foreign world and its policies. The steady income I've been receiving has finally reached the amount needed to become a legal trainer.
Today is the day I will quit my job and venture into the wild. White Room training has conditioned me to the harsh forest conditions, even though I've used simulations in a white room.
I have already stocked up on supplies and said goodbye to nurse Joy and the other hospital employees. My adventure starts now, at the age of 15.
I've already paid for my legal fees to catch Pokémon and adventure through the world, only leaving me to enter the forest and search for Pokémon.
The plan was to catch two Pokémon and level them up before I entered the first gym, which was the rock-type gym where I had to defeat the leader to earn a badge.
I forgot to have mentioned that I received a Pokémon from nurse Joy as a pardoning gift, It was a small blue penguin, it was a Piplup. After being pressured by Nurse Joy, I decided to give him a proper name. Napoleon.
We were in a clearing surrounded by the forest. His short body was stumbling all over the ground as he kept losing balance.
"Keep your fins out, don't hug your body while walking." Napoleon isn't a very competent nor intelligent creature, yet. We were currently going over walking drills.
"Sqarp!" Napoleon fell on his stomach for the seventh time, clearly not taking my advice seriously. He was a newborn; if I could walk at his age, so could he.
"Here, let me guide you." I tried to hold his fins out and make him walk straight forward, which resulted in him squirting water out of his beak at me and soaking my face. He soon fell over due to the recoil.
"Sqaarp!" He said as I sighed, picking him up once again.
"Listen, I could leave you here to be savagely mauled by a predator and I wouldn't care. Make yourself useful to me, or that will be your fate. Do you want that?" Napoleon looked at me with a relatively concerned face, surprisingly understanding me somewhat despite the language barrier.
"Sqarp.." He had a gloomy look as he tried walking with his fins out, tripping over without even trying.
"Hey! Be a little more considerate of your Pokémon!" The white-haired girl from earlier emerged from the trees, with a disappointed look on her face due to my actions.
Was she just stalking me the entire time? Seriously? The best course of action is to deescalate the situation, she could possibly overreact and bring this to the officials.
"He isn't following my instructions. I'm being extremely lenient right now by not punishing him." I said, trying to reason with the woman who was interrupting our training.
"So? Do you have no shame?" Her blue frog hopped behind her, and she stood in front of me, blocking my access to Napoleon.
"Could you please not interrupt our training session? He is currently practicing his walking."
"He's a newborn! A penguin too! You shouldn't expect him to be immediately developed enough to walk properly."
"What am I supposed to do? Should I carry him? How will he fend for himself in a battle?"
"You're expecting too much from the poor thing. Look, he's even crying." She motioned to Napoleon, unexpectedly, he had water coming out of his eyes in a cartoonish manner.
"A Piplup at its age should be able to walk, I've done a lot of research on this matter."
"Maybe he's different? I could report this to the locals as Pokémon abuse!" She pointed at me, accusing me of abuse.
"I haven't laid my hand on him yet, excluding me guiding his fins." I retorted, she most likely witnessed me holding his fins out as well.
"You're lucky I won't report you, don't let me see this type of behavior again." She walked away, submerging into the bushes loudly. Quite the annoying person.
"Crying didn't help my case much." Napoleon looked at me with a mischievous expression, as if his tears had come to an immediate halt.
I audibly sighed, returning Napoleon to his ball without warning. Pokémon were very troubling, especially this one. I need a more intelligent comrade for Napoleon to learn from.
That of course, being another Pokémon. There was really only grass and bug types in this area, leaving me very limited to my options. I could possibly fish as well.
I should probably just walk around first and scan the area, maybe find a decent one. This may be a poor choice, but it's not like I'll suddenly stumble upon a good Pokémon.
I was exploring the wilderness, taking notes on the surroundings and incorporating them into my mental map. It was a very serene and peaceful environment, the bright sun stinging my eyes, which were still sensitive to the sunlight.
It's been around 30 minutes since I've ventured further into the forest, but nothing much has been noted until my recent discovery.
I entered a man-made clearing filled with unnatural concrete coating the surface of the ground. There was a small brick structure in the middle, giving off a mysterious aura. It supposedly was something people shouldn't do in the books I read, but I decided to enter the brick building.
I opened the wooden door; the hallway echoed with the sound of the door scraping as I entered. The floor was wet, and it seemed like there was no light. I turned on the flashlight that Nurse Joy had given me.
When I flashed it on, I was met with a relatively short corridor with two doors on each side. There was supposedly a lot of riddles about entering one door or another, but in this structure there were only two options.
I decided to enter the wooden one first. The horrendous stench that filled my nose made me want to vomit if I hadn't been conditioned to these types of circumstances.
I pushed through the door as it creaked. The entrance creaked a little more eerily. The room was also abnormally cold, but this sudden shock snapped me back to my senses and I continued forward.
The room was dark and small, a very small light flickered in the corner. I could also make out a rocking chair that was somewhat close to the light. What kind of room is this? I'm not very familiar with rooms in general, except for the Pokémon center and the White Room.
I shone my flashlight at the area, and I got a very big surprise. There was a rotting corpse with an earthworm coming out of its missing eye socket. The body was wearing civilian-like clothing, and the skin was almost entirely gone, leaving only muscle and bone.
There was also a gun on the floor next to the person, considering that this was probably a suicide. This is quite a strange place to commit suicide, I wonder what drove them to such a pitiful state.
I walked towards the body and examined it, checking the pockets and inspecting its clothing. I also picked up the bloodied gun from the ground. It was only accessible by the military, which led to my confusion.
There was nothing else to note of, so I decided to make my exit and check the other door. That was until the rocking chair went flying across the room and flew the body onto me.
I dropped my flashlight as a woman wailed in every direction. The body was on top of me as I tried to push it off, thanks to my training, I was able to push it off quite easily.
Suddenly cackling could be heard throughout the room, replacing the woman who was wailing. It seems to be a paranormal Pokémon; this could be the reason the person took their life.
Suddenly eyes appeared in the dark, and the creature responsible for this kept laughing maniacally. It was quite a poor situation to be in, but I kept my mind calm.
I picked up my flashlight again and shone it on the ghost. It revealed a white creature that appeared to be transparent. Its mouth was open, and its separate hands were starting to make a clawing motion.
It was a Haunter, and an unusually white one at that. The Ghost lunged at me through the air, so I dodged to the left and assumed a Krav Maga stance. Apparently, I can't physically hit it, but I might be able to catch it.
I needed to subdue the creature somehow. Usually your Pokémon would fight the battle for you until the opponent is weakened, yet Napoleon is too incompetent to fully use his powers yet.
The Haunter started to lunge again at me once more, his tongue starting to drip acid as I dodged once more, his cackling stopped as he seemed to be angered by my frequent dodging. This kept repeating as I ran through millions of simulations to see how I'll catch the ghost.
"Quintley, use bubble!" A familiar voice echoed throughout the facility as a sphere like blast of water hit the Haunter in the face. The Haunter was put is a slight daze so I took the opportunity.
I lunged and reached the ghost in less thank a second, I wrapped my hands around its solid form of a hand and threw it on the ground, surprisingly knocking the creature out.
I threw my regular poke-ball at the Haunter, catching it immediately due to its lack of conscious. I pulled out my Pokédex and checked the status of the Haunter, his health was 20% and he was supposedly an entire white Pokémon.
Now I had to direct my focus back to the other problem.
"You're welcome." The same white haired woman sighed, the frog next to her seemed to be oddly ecstatic.
"Thanks..?" I figured she would be stalking me , but I didn't expect that she would intervene in this fight. Supposedly Haunters are extremely intimidating beings for regular people.
"Is it a he or a she?" She asked unexpectedly, trying to inquire more about my new Pokémon.
I checked the Pokédex once more, noting that he is a male. "He." I responded, she seemed to give a nod.
"What's your name?"
"Acting all chummy now? Weren't you just taking advantage of my kindness?" She responded with a disappointing look, attempting to gaslight me into pity.
"My names Ayanokouji Kiyotaka, you may call me Kiyotaka." I decided to ignore her remark, trying to gain more information.
"Alright Pokémon abuser, my names Anya. This is Quintley, what are you Pokémons names?"
"The penguin is Napoleon, and the Haunter is.. Machiavelli." Bit of a realistic name, the creature really resembles the lack of empathy for other humans and creatures.
"Those are some.. weird names." Anya muttered. That is only natural since she has only knowledge regarding the this planet.
"Well, thanks for the help." I decided to try to end this encounter which has turned awkward.
"Yeah, I'll see you sometime, Kiyotaka." Anya left the building, most likely she didn't notice the rotting that was upright on the wall to the left of her.
