Minutes to Heaven
Part IV
Something kept nudging his shoulder. But Mirai was too warm and comfortable to move, to properly wake up. If he could just ignore it and settle back into a deep sleep…
"Sir…Mirai-san, wake up. Wake up, Mirai-san."
That voice…Blearily opening his eyes, he uneasily realized he'd fallen asleep in Midori —in Izuku's room. Sometime in the night he'd moved and laid his body across her bed. He'd also somehow found himself loosely wrapped around her and held his breath, hoping that this hadn't set her back or alarmed her in any way.
"Mirai-san, please wake up. You should leave before everyone else wakes up and notices you here."
He removed himself from her carefully, silently berating himself. "I apologize, Izuku. I hadn't meant to fall asleep here, nor…nor touch you so inappropriately."
She sat up and faced him, giving him a small smile. "It's fine, I'm okay. It's not your fault I randomly called you in the middle of the early morning to ask you to get me something; I'm sorry, you must've been sleeping."
Mirai shook his head, reaching around her for his glasses that had been set on her bedside table (she must've taken it off of him and put it there sometime after he fell asleep).
"No, I said I would help you or get you anything, whenever and wherever. I still stand by it, so please continue to call on me," he insisted firmly.
"Okay, thank you," she bit her lip as she fidgeted with her hands. "And I wasn't bothered. By you know…you accidentally holding onto me. It…it didn't bother me."
He swayed a little uncertainly. "Oh, I-I see. That's-that's good. I mean, I'm relieved to hear that," he tried to not fumble his words.
Izuku reached at his t-shirt and tugged. "It's still early enough that you can leave without being noticed. In fact, you could just head to Toshinori's and just rest there for a bit, pretend you'd been visiting him and stayed the night there. That way, we could head to the Agency after my morning and start the day there. I could let Mirio-sempai know you're here too."
He adjusted his glasses. "Ah, yes, that's rather ideal. To be honest though, I don't know where he is staying."
"I'll take you there," she got off the bed first and then took his hand after he got off next.
They snuck out of the 1-A Dorms and traveled on foot to the staff housing, where Izuku quietly led him to the top floor and the first door there. She knocked firmly and waited. After a few moments, the door opened to find Toshinori on the other side.
"Delivery~" Izuku teased, smiling brightly, and it was so bright and beautiful that it made Mirai stare and his breath to catch.
It had also been so long since she'd smiled sweetly and acted cheerful and normal, that it made something in him ache and feel sad.
He also admitted to a bit of jealousy —she would be this happy and smiling again in Toshinori's presence. But he understood; those two were close and had a bond that was unshakable.
Mirai was just…there for the moment.
"Izuku —ah, Mirai too! What are you two doing here and together?" Toshinori looked between them in confusion and hesitancy.
"I had a really bad craving in the middle of the night…" Izuku confessed, looking highly embarrassed. She gave Mirai a small smile then though. "Sir went and got it for me."
"Did he? Thank you, Mirai. That was very helpful of you," Toshinori smiled softly. "I'm glad you're being taken cared of, Midoriya-kun. And Mirai, I appreciate your diligence."
"Anyway, Sir accidentally fell asleep and I thought I might as well wake him up and bring him here before any of the others woke up and found him passed out in the dormitory. Mind hosting him for a bit while I get ready for the day? I'll pick him up with Mirio-sempai afterwards," Izuku tugged Mirai forward and towards Toshinori, and it was just then that he belatedly realized they'd still been holding hands.
"We'll see you again later," Toshinori grinned and waved, 'accepting' Mirai and bringing him inside.
Izuku waved back and then she was lightly jogging away, likely to head back and get ready like she'd said.
Toshinori glanced at his old friend, who looked dazed from not just the proceedings but probably still not fully awake.
Mirai had never been much of a morning person until someone shoved a cup of coffee at him.
"Come in, come in," he told the other, leading him in and towards his couch in the living room.
He headed towards his kitchenette and started the coffee, grabbing two mugs. He poured the dark liquid into both mugs, putting some creamer and sugar in his. Taking them in hand, he headed back to Mirai, who was starting to lightly doze off again. He debated letting the other man sleep, but it was about time for him to be awake anyway, and he was less likely to be upset about the lack of sleep than to be late for 'work'.
"Here," he said, holding out the mug and watching Mirai blink awake. "Black, right?"
"Mmm," Mirai just mumbled, accepting it and blowing lightly. He started to drink it and wake up more. "Thank you, Toshinori."
Toshinori started to sip at his own coffee as he went over what he'd just learned.
"So…you drove an hour away from Tokyo to here, just to get Midoriya-kun something she was craving? What time was this anyway?"
Mirai rubbed his eyes, his glasses pushed up. "Oh, it was…1:15 in the morning, I believe," he muttered, causing Toshinori's eyebrows to fly up. "But that's fine. I told her she was free to call for whatever she needed, cravings included. Even if it was really late. Besides, she was craving onigiri and I wanted to make sure she's been eating —she doesn't seem to be eating a lot and with her condition…"
"Yes, I'm glad you're looking out for her so well," though it was worrying that she didn't seem to be eating, "I just didn't expect you to be so dedicated or be so diligent towards her."
Mirai was quiet for a while, which made him curious and wary.
"Did she tell you about our first meeting? The day she came to ask to have her work study with me?"
"Not in so many words," Toshinori hmmed, lightly swirling his coffee idly. "But she normally tells me everything. That she didn't say much about it said a lot to me without anything being said. Especially since she was so excited about not just landing a work study, but that it was with you —someone I knew she admired and really wanted to work with."
Remorse and guilt briefly flittered across his former Sidekick's face, before melancholy colored it completely.
"I was not…the most welcoming towards her," Mirai confessed. "I had had it in my mind that you had chosen the wrong person to succeed you and to host One For All. That you had just impulsively chosen someone to give your Quirk to; some random girl you'd met and who had momentarily 'dazzled' you with some heroic nostalgia or something, and that you had picked her on a whim, as you were wont to do most times as I'd remembered."
A flash of irritation and yet tired understanding went through him, as he did remember the past and his old behavior that Mirai had tended to have to deal with back then. It hadn't lent to any credibility to Toshinori, and yet Mirai also shouldn't have judged Izuku before having met her and also not have withheld a fair judgment.
But it seems they were both regretting the past now.
"I hadn't been the kindest to her," Mirai murmured. "But I was never cruel and I never mistreated her. Except now, even that is not good enough and I am doing my best to make sure she is taken cared of and knows that I do, actually, care for her wellbeing."
Toshinori gave a soft smile at his friend and hoped that Mirai would know that Izuku knows all of that already.
Mirai still felt exhausted but knew that he had to keep up appearances. Still, he said nothing to Mirio's curious gaze at his casual clothes, knowing that his protégé had never seen him dressed so relaxed before. In fact, not even his Sidekicks had —prior to now, he had always dressed business attire to everything. Ironically enough, the newest member of his team was the first and before then, had been the only person to see him at his most relaxed and casualness, aside from Toshinori (which had been a very long time ago).
Then again, given the circumstances, maybe it wasn't so surprising that Izuku had seen him in his most vulnerable state, when he'd seen her at hers.
"Good morning, Mirio-kun," he greeted his student. "I will be driving you and Midoriya-kun to the Agency today."
"That's awesome, Sir! That's very kind of you," Mirio smiled brightly. He gave a thumbs up. "Beats trying to catch the train!"
Izuku gave a brief smile, staying quiet as had been her usual state these days, but she did seem less tired and the eternal misery she seemed to recently be always in was waning away. A huge improvement —it made him outwardly smile, which seemed to shock Mirio and startle Izuku. Understandable, given though he appreciated and valued smiles and laughter, he himself wasn't prone to smiling and laughing often and definitely not obviously to others. He'd only just very recently begun to smile more openly around Izuku…
"We should get going to beat traff —"
"A moment, please Sir Nighteye!"
Mirai paused, mentally steeling himself before he turned away from his students to face Nedzu, the Principal of UA standing nearby. He glanced towards the two and nodded to the entrance.
"Go on, you two. Midoriya-kun, lead Mirio-kun to my car. It'll be parked in the same spot," he instructed them before he turned back to the Principal. "What can I do for you, Principal Nedzu?"
The chimera smiled widely but Mirai stayed wary. "Don't be troubled, Sir Nighteye. I merely came to talk quickly to you about last night."
He tensed up, remembering that Nedzu had somehow known about his late night visit and had let him in unquestioningly, which also implied that he knew about Izuku's pregnancy.
"I understand and have come to know that Midoriya-chan is having a really hard time recently and that she needs…extra care. Perhaps it would be easier on the two of you, if last night is to become a reoccurring event, that she should stay at your Agency for now. I would've suggested you staying at UA momentarily, but given Midoriya-chan's reticence to not let anyone know, it would be easier to keep things quiet at your Agency then. That is…if you will agree to temporarily taking her in?"
Of course he would.
Mirai stared at Nedzu with a severe look on his face, frown deepening. "That is more than acceptable. If she agrees to it, then I am more than willing to take her in immediately."
"Excellent!" Nedzu clapped his paws together. "Then I shall entrust Midoriya-chan to you; perhaps you'll find it now more easier to take care of her needs and whatever she might request of you, Sir Nighteye."
Well…he wasn't wrong. Izuku wouldn't have to wait too long on him and could inform him of whatever she needed faster, and he would be able to help her out quicker this way.
"I'll have Yagi collect some of her clothes to bring over later," Nedzu ended with. "Take well care of her."
That was a given. Not that Mirai would, after promising her, neglect her care at all, even without being told to do so. He'd sworn to her he would help and he would, whatever it is.
Izuku led the way to where Mirai had parked before, remembering it easily. However, unlike before, Sir's car was parked crookedly and like he'd been in a hurry…or half asleep. Maybe even both, considering last night. Thinking of it made her cheeks grow warm.
"Wow, it's really strange seeing Sir dressed so casually like that," Mirio mused aloud. "I've never seen him dressed down. And here so early too!"
Realizing how strange it'd look for her to know where Mirai had parked and that she wasn't acting as taken aback on Mirai's appearance like Mirio (she had already seen him as is the night before), she knew she should reply with something to cover that.
"He was probably here to see All Might; maybe they talked and caught up with each other last night, and it became too late. Sir probably stayed over then and decided he'd drive us since he was already here."
"That…that is correct," she suddenly heard Mirai's voice from behind them and Mirio and she turned to face the taller man. "Good deduction, Midoriya-kun. Get inside, you two. Mirio-kun, no blasting k-pop."
Mirio briefly looked disappointed before he perked back up again. "You know, Sir. You can be informal with Izuku-kun too! You don't have to be all 'Midoriya-kun' this and 'Midoriya-kun' that!"
That made Izuku falter. On one hand, she had understood before that Mirio and Mirai had known each other longer and had a closer, more familiar bond than Sir had had with her. On the other hand, she could see how Mirio would think the difference in address might look biased and maybe make her feel odd about being made to feel that —
"If she does not mind and would allow it," Mirai said, bringing her abruptly out of her thoughts from the surprise. "Are you comfortable with the change…Izukkun?"
Oh! He didn't just call on her more familiarly, he'd even turned her name into an endearment!
Wide-eyed and taken aback, she stared at the patiently waiting Mirai while Mirio complimented and talked eagerly about the new, cute address.
"Aahh, that's super cute, Sir! Why didn't I think of it? It fits my kohai so well!"
She decided that it was fine in the end after all and gave a small nod, caught off guard again to see Mirai briefly smile in reply.
What was going on in that man's head?
Perhaps that had been a bit overboard, but Mirai had just been glad to see her almost back to normal recently and hadn't been able to help himself. But that she went along with it was even better.
"Then, Mirio-kun, Izukkun, let's head out now," he said, heading to the driver's side already. He briefly eyed Izuku, making sure she was safely seated and buckled before he started the car and began to drive off.
On the way to the Agency, he spotted the convenience store that was just around the block from his building. Deciding on a quick stop, he parked nearby and gestured to the store.
"We can take a quick look and buy some snacks for the break room," he said, glancing discreetly at Izuku. She ducked her head. "Please choose whatever you like."
"What a treat, Sir," Mirio grinned, excited. He gently but excitedly patted Izuku's shoulder, careful of her after her recent behavior. "Let's go, Izuku-kun! Sir's paying, so choose whatever you want," he winked at her.
She gave a feeble smile, but that it was sincere at all made Mirai relax. As Mirio traipsed closer into the store, she was slower to go off on her own, glancing around hesitantly.
"You should look around," he hovered closer to her. "See if there is anything that whets your appetite."
Izuku looked up at him wide-eyed. "You already got me my onigiri. You don't…you don't have to get me anything else."
"Don't be ridiculous," he murmured, already ushering her along an aisle. While walking her around, he remembered what she'd told him last night and began snatching up said snacks she'd mentioned. "You are eating for two and cravings are common. I understand you will have different things you'd want to eat."
She was fidgeting but sighed as she gave in and started to look around more seriously. He watched her closely. Seeing her slowly gathering a pile in her arms, he allowed a small smile to himself before he reached over to take her things and put them in the basket he held.
He missed Mirio's curious eyes following them the entire time.
"Awww, I wanted to go pick snacks," Bubble Girl pouted.
Mirio chuckled at her reaction, enjoying the muffin that he had gotten earlier. "Sir was driving us and it was on the way. Maybe he decided on a whim, when he saw the store."
He saw Izuku heading out the door with a stack of files and it was only moments before Sir appeared near her, said a few things, and then was taking most of the files from her as Izuku led the way out of the room.
This kind of thing had been happening a lot.
"Is it me or is Sir always hovering around poor Deku-chan?" Bubble Girl noticed as well. She tutted several times and shook her head. "He needs to give her breathing room and trust she can do the work. Honestly! He was never this overbearing with me or you, Mirio-kun. It's like he thinks she'll mess up everything or do something wrong all the time."
Mirio hummed, agreeing with most of that. Only…he didn't really think that was the reason why Nighteye was constantly sticking close to Izuku, especially recently. That's even more prominent when he took in account of Izuku's recent withdrawn behavior and Sir's jacket's ability to somehow abate whatever was troubling her. It even seemed more like he was concerned and trying to help her.
Maybe…maybe Sir had found out what was bothering Izuku and why he was more inclined to stick close and constantly help on everything?
